We're rather grateful that our web editor automatically adds the accented 'é' in Pokémon, as we've been writing about the franchise a lot today. That's partly because there was a substantial information drop for Pokémon Sun and Moon, in particular, along with some other Pocket Monster-related articles. In any case, we wish you a happy Pokémon day here on Pokémon Life.
Today's announcements for Sun and Moon were certainly intriguing, though, with new 'mon being joined by information on new moves, details on the game's structure and even a look at some quirky merchandise.
As always we thought we'd gather the information from the official website in one place for you to gawk at, including the latest trailer.
Enjoy!

Z-Moves
Introducing Z-Moves
A new element has been introduced into the Pokémon battles in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon: Z-Moves. Z-Moves are moves of great power that can only be used once per battle. When the Trainer and Pokémon's wishes resonate with each other, and both release their full power together—the result is the explosive force of a Z-Move! All Pokémon can use Z-Moves to perform mightily in battle!
Intense Battles with Z-Moves
There are two conditions for performing Z-Moves: a Pokémon must learn a move of the same type as a Z-Crystal, and it must be holding the corresponding Z-Crystal.
When you see these moves in action in the game, each overwhelmingly powerful move will be on full display, filling the entire screen!
Poké Ride
The land, the sea, the sky—with the power of Pokémon, you can go anywhere!
One aspect of the culture in the Alola region is something known as Poké Ride, in which certain Pokémon help people get to places they wouldn't be able to reach by using human strength alone. These Pokémon don't join your team, but you can call on them anytime to receive their help. This practice is typical of the way of life in Alola, where humans and Pokémon are so closely bound together.
The Rite of the Island Challenge
One aspect of the unique culture that has developed in the Alola region is the island challenge, an adventurous rite that involves traveling through each of the four islands. This event helps young people grow into fine Pokémon Trainers. As the main character of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, you yourself are destined to attempt this island challenge.
Island Challenge Trials
To complete the island challenge, young trial-goers must overcome the trials in store on each of the four islands. These trials are not limited to battling with Pokémon. They take a variety of forms, such as finding items or completing tests of knowledge. You will not be able to accomplish them with ordinary methods!
Totem Pokémon
At the end of each trial, a mighty Pokémon known as a Totem Pokémon will be waiting. A Totem Pokémon is much larger than others of its species, and its body is enveloped in a special aura.
Sophisticated Combos in SOS Battles
When Totem Pokémon battle, they summon ally Pokémon to join them. With the support of these allies, the Totem Pokémon become even more powerful. And it seems that Pokémon other than Totem Pokémon sometimes call on allies to aid them.
Grand Trials
The final trial on each island is called the grand trial. It is a Pokémon battle against the kahuna who leads that island. If a trial-goer succeeds in clearing this grand trial, he or she will be publicly recognized as having cleared all of the island's trials and can move on to the next island.
Pokémon
Sandshrew have historically lived in desert areas. But the frequent eruptions of nearby volcanoes drove the Sandshrew to abandon the desert and migrate to snowy mountains, where they took on this form.
Sandshrew's body changed to adapt to the harsh environment of the snowy mountains. The Alolan Sandshrew has a shell of ice covering its skin, which is like hard steel. It excels defensively, but it lacks flexibility and can't curl its body into a ball like a Ground-type Sandshrew can.
Its heavy weight makes the Alolan Sandshrew slower than a normal Sandshrew, but the claws on its hands and feet allow it to move across ice without slipping. When it wants to move quickly, it uses its stomach to slide across the ice like a curling rock.
This evolves into...
The Alolan Sandshrew of the snowy mountains evolve into Alolan Sandslash with spiny backs that are covered in ice. Thanks to their icy coating, these spines are large and sharp. Alolan Sandslash hide themselves in the snow when strong enemies appear, leaving only their needles exposed and ready for business.
The weight of the ice that covers its body makes these Alolan Sandslash heavier than normal Sandslash, and this causes them to be slower. Yet in snow fields and on ice, they move by creating a path with their claws, and so they're able to move with swiftness.
The sprays of snow kicked up by Alolan Sandslash's movements are so beautiful that many photographers head for the snowy peaks to capture the moment. However, Sandslash live deep in the mountains, and there is great danger of becoming stranded, so it's forbidden to climb the mountains without permission.
It is said that Vulpix came to the Alola region together with humans, but the Fox Pokémon moved to the snowy mountain peaks to avoid the normal habitats of other Pokémon, and thus it ended up taking on this form.
These Alolan Vulpix live on high mountains that remain covered in snow year-round. They live in small packs of two to five individuals, helping one another survive.
Alolan Vulpix can freeze anything solid by expelling breath at a temperature of −58 degrees Fahrenheit (−50° C) from its mouth. It doesn't fare well in the heat, but when the temperature gets too high, it produces ice from its tail to lower the surrounding temperature.
This evolves into...
Alolan Ninetales live on a snowy peak that is revered in the Alola region as a holy mountain. They are treated as sacred emissaries, and people meet them with awe and fear. This Pokémon's personality is extremely gentle, and at times it has helped humans who seem to be in distress. However, it shows no mercy at all to anyone or anything that dares to damage its territory!
The Alolan Ninetales is able to produce ice crystals from the fur that covers its body. It can use these ice crystals to block attacks, or it can form balls of ice with them, which it fires like bullets at opponents. The power of these ice missiles is great enough to pulverize rock!
The environment of the Alola region, where strong sunlight pours down all year round, brought about this change in Exeggutor's form. The people of Alola boast that the Alolan Exeggutor is the true form of Exeggutor.
Unlike other Exeggutor, the Alolan Exeggutor has a fourth head—on its tail! This fourth head controls the tail independently and can take on opponents to the rear that can't be reached by the main heads' attacks.
This Pokémon excels at whipping its long neck like a lash to attack with its hard heads. But that neck can sometimes become a weakness...
Oricorio changes its form by sipping the nectar of certain flowers. Since it has four different forms—the same as the number of islands in Alola—it would seem that different Oricorio live on each of the islands.
The Sensu Style Oricorio is quiet and collected. By means of its dance, it gathers the spirits drifting about in an area and borrows their power to fight. People who migrated from Kanto feel a great liking for this Pokémon because its dance reminds them of their homeland.
Oricorio has the new Dancer Ability that no other Pokémon has had before. If another Pokémon in the field uses a dancing move, then Oricorio will be able to use the same move immediately afterward, thanks to its Dancer Ability.
Revelation Dance is a move that only Oricorio can learn, and its type changes based on Oricorio's current style.
The Baile Style Oricorio is very passionate, and power fills its body when it dances. It sends downy fluff flying during its intense dances. By igniting this fluff, it can unleash a fiery dance attack.
The Pa'u Style Oricorio acts at its own pace, which sometimes makes it difficult to deal with. It sharpens its spirited moves through dance, which increases its psychic power. It's said that this dance expresses its gratitude to the guardian deity Pokémon.
The Pom-Pom Style Oricorio is very friendly toward people, and it uses dancing to encourage Trainers who are feeling glum. When it dances, its feathers are charged with static electricity. It can attack with these charged feathers, and sometimes it unleashes a powerful electric shock.
Mudbray could once be found all over the world, but it was overhunted and ended up on the verge of extinction. It's said that the Alola region is the only place in the world where Mudbray can still be found in the wild.
Mudbray boasts superhuman strength—a surprise, considering its small body. Mudbray can carry loads up to 50 times its own weight on its back or dragging behind it.
Mudbray loves playing in the mud. It's easy to live in harmony with this Pokémon, as long as you provide an environment where it can play in the mud. If it can't frolic in the mire, however, Mudbray will become stressed and may stop listening to orders.
This evolves into...
Mudsdale is known for its powerful body as well as its emotional fortitude, which keeps it from being agitated by anything. It never cries out, no matter what kind of trouble it's in, and it defeats its opponents with a single powerful blow. Its legs are coated in protective mud, and the weight of this coating increases the force of its kicks. One kick, and a car is a pile of scrap!
Mudsdale's running speed is not too swift, but it has excellent power and stamina. It can carry on for three days and three nights despite dragging loads of over 10 tons!
When Mudsdale gallops in earnest, the power of each hoof-clop can dig out huge holes, even in asphalt. Mudsdale is forbidden to run on some of Alola's public roads.
Mudsdale can have the new Stamina Ability, an Ability that no other Pokémon has had before. With the Stamina Ability, this Pokémon's Defense goes up by 1 when it's hit by an attack.
Minior are formed in the stratosphere and live by absorbing the detritus around them. When they've consumed a large quantity of particles, their bodies become heavy, and they fall toward the planet's surface. Minior has a hard and heavy outer shell with a core inside it. The Meteor Pokémon seems to be made in such a way that if its shell breaks, it becomes lighter and can deal out quick attacks.
When its shell breaks, the core in its center is revealed. You won't know what color will appear until this happens!
Minior has the new Shields Down Ability, which no other Pokémon has had before. With the Shields Down Ability, it will have excellent defensive capabilities as long as its shell is intact. It will also be protected from status conditions. But when its HP drops below half, its shell will break, and it will change to a form better suited to attacking.
Minior's core will change color depending on the particular color of the debris it has absorbed. Its pastel coloration has a cute look, so this Pokémon is often used as a design motif for clothing and accessories.
Gumshoos's method of targeting prey is the exact opposite of Yungoos's strategy. While Yungoos prowls around, Gumshoos stakes out its prey's usual routes and waits patiently for it to come by.
Gumshoos has a tenacious personality, which is why it targets one prey for so long without wavering. But when the sun goes down, it runs low on stamina, falling asleep right on the spot. Gumshoos can withstand a great deal of hunger. It's able to stay perfectly still while waiting for its prey, keeping watch without eating a thing.
Fomantis is nocturnal, and it performs photosynthesis while it sleeps during the day by spreading out its leaves in all directions. Because of the danger of staying in the same location two days in a row, Fomantis begins its search for the next day's spot as soon as the sun sets.
For Fomantis, photosynthesis is not just a source of energy—it is a necessity to achieve the strength and brilliant coloration of its evolved form. Photosynthesis is precious to Fomantis, and it will fiercely attack those who get in the way of that process.
Fomantis excel at long-range attacks like Razor Leaf and Solar Beam. Solar Beam is indeed a powerful move, but since it uses up the energy that the Pokémon has stored through photosynthesis, Fomantis rarely uses it.
This evolves into...
Lurantis draws opponents near to itself with its flowerlike appearance and aroma—and then it takes them down. It's said to be the most gorgeous of all Grass-type Pokémon, due to its brilliant coloration and elegant moves. Lurantis's appearance is maintained through detailed grooming. It will trust a Trainer who does a good job of caring for it, but it will apparently have a difficult time growing closer to a lazy Trainer.
Lurantis can learn Solar Blade, a move that releases a blade-shaped beam to mince up its foes. The blade is so sharp it is said it can slice a rock in half! Solar Blade is a move that no Pokémon has been able to learn before. With Solar Blade, Lurantis absorbs energy from the sun on the first move and then unleashes a powerful attack on the second turn. Lurantis is the Totem Pokémon of Lush Jungle, the site of an Akala Island trial. It will overwhelm trial-goers with the powerful combos it unleashes with the Pokémon allies it calls.

So excited about this!
This is going to sell, and sell well. The kids will lap up the wristband, and it's infinitely more recognisable that Yokai Watch in that sense. Go will do wonders as well, no doubt; I can see there being an unlockable/special content for 3DS owners.
"Pokémon help people get to places they wouldn't be able to reach by using human strength alone. "
If I'm not mistaken wasn't there both a boat and plane in the past trailers?
I really like the new Pokemon (including Alolan forms) and the Poke Ride feature! Furthermore, the Island Trials look to replace Gym Battles, which I'm not too happy about since I feel like it shakes up the formula TOO MUCH, but they do seem pretty cool. However, the Z-Moves don't particularly excite me. They, along with Mega Evolution, make me feel like Game Freak is replacing the "spirit" of Pokemon from the older games with unnecessary new features, which is a huge bummer for me.
Exeggutor looks weirdly awesome.
@Xaessya My guess is that this "poke ride" mechanic will partially/fully replace HMs. I'm digging the whole Alola form, reinvigorating old favourites (like mega evolution). What's more is that it makes sense.
I think ill catch a vulpix in this game. Wonder if arbok will also be one of the pokemon to get a different look. The pokedex does mention that its pattern changes depending on where its found.
Edit: Also why is the new alolan exeggutor part dragon type? o.0
Can't wait for this. I think it has the potential to even be the best-selling one of the franchise considering all the recent attention
So if the Pokemon has to be holding a special item to use the Z-Move, it means Mega Evolutions can't use Z-Moves, as well as other Pokemon that need to be holding a specific item to function properly competitively.
This also means to use Gigavolt Havoc, the Pikachu in the trailer can't also be holding a Light Ball.
It seems in these "Trail Battles" the opponent has an unfair advantage that isn't just RNG manipulation Ponyta manure, which is something I have suggested "bosses" in Pokemon games should have had for a long time to make them more of a challenge.
@DarkKirby My guess is that's a balancing technique to prevent certain Pokemon from becoming OP with their Z-moves and/or putting them in really bad situations, either in game or competitively. For the former, letting Pikachu hold a Light Ball and access the Z-move means you'd have an easy to acquire early game Pokemon that's as strong as standard Mewtwo that can wreck havoc on your opponents strongest Pokemon so long as it can move first, which would make the main campaign really easy. Certain Megas could also theoretically abuse them in competitive play in the same sense. For the latter, having Z-moves would really hurt Pokemon that rely on choice items since they'd be forced to switch immeadiately after since they couldn't use their Z-move again. Though now that I think about it, this means Mega Rayquaza is gonna be even more broken this Gen since it'll be the only Mega with access to a Z-move.
Haven't finished a Pokémon game since platinum. Found the Pokémon designs in black and white unappealing. Story was was a huge step forward from what I experienced of it but the game just didn't hold my attention. Played X but couldn't get over the whole "group of friends instead of a rival" and found that it was just super easy. Sure these games aren't meant to be hard by any means but at least make the gym leaders a challenge. These new games really have my attention with the island trials. If the represent a bigger challenge, I'm all for buying into them.
Edit: I've been playing the games since Ruby/Sapphire (which are my favorites based purely on them being my first) so I may just be getting series fatigue.
the best was oricorio and alolan exeggutor
@ASonic3582 The trailer made it sound like the trainer has to be holding the same type of crystal too, so if that's the case, the trainer would only be able to use one type of Z-Power attack per battle.
The new Pokemom announced look great and I'm really excited to see new versions of old Pokemon. I absolutely need that Alolan Ninetails.
The new features seem cool as well. Riding Pokemon sounds improved form X and Y, and I think the island challenge is a neat new addition. Hopefully this means they shaking up the formula a bit.
Please oh please let there be even more alola forms! I NEED MORE OF THAT AWESOMENESS!!!!!
I was already excited for these games. These developments just upped it. I saw someone on Facebook claim that creating region variants of older Pokemon reeked of laziness and that it messed with everything Pokemon was about. It screamed of someone who would have complained regardless of what Nintendo. Personally, I think its a brilliant idea and deepens the concept of evolution that has been a hallmark (some would say it's most popular mechanic, evolving your monsters) of the series since day one. Albeit, this is an entirely new way (or not really as we have had variants in the past) of approaching it.
@LegendOfPokemon Thing is, it appears that Z-Moves (like Mega Evolutions) are optional. If it were forced upon you to complete the game, I can understand the argument. I don't think it hurts or affects the spirit of the core game
Great, now Trump is a Pokemon
Damn they messed up some of my gen 1 brethren. I will let it slide since gen 1 is in the spotlight right now with pokemon go. We win baby!
Minior is adorable, but I really hope it evolves
Definitely getting Icy Ninetails. That thing is very majestic.
Seeing him ride the pokemon makes me lament about how much I want Monster Hunter Stories
@Zanark I heard an explanation on YouTube by Gaijin Goomba as being the fact that Exeggutor may have Dragon Fruit on it as they have been flourishing in Hawaii, so it would be dragon type from that perhaps?
I think this Alolan form Pokemon idea is awesome! I've always liked Sandshrew, and this ice-type Ninetails is something I am definitely getting behind and using in game. It may not necessarily be the same as a brand new Pokemon, but these new forms look beautiful and it makes Pokemon seem more realistic in their adaptive natures.
Were is oricorio (gangnam style)?
Hopefully there are more new pokemon to be revealed later, not a huge fan of just having a large contingent of old pokemon getting new forms. It seems lazy.
I'm not ashamed to admit I will be buying the Z power toy thing......
I love this new version of Sandslash! It's been my favorite Pokémon since Gen 1, so I'm glad it's finally getting some love.
This feels so right...almost every concern that I have before is gone, and I'm excited for capture Vulpix again (dex filled since Platinum), for new poke, for the new regions and new moves.
The only thing that I still want is a hard mode, or a game a bit harder than Black.
@JpGamerGuy90 They've revealed 31 new Pokemon so far. That's a lot more than the amount of old Pokemon with Alola forms so far.
@Fbigabig
Yeah, it would be cool to see the Crystal Onix become canon.
so far i am only concerned about a few things.
1) can we get the original forms of these new pokemon forms
2) are they gunna do it for alot of pokemon
3) are they gunna reveal more islands
Pokemon game still looks crappy on 3DS, The Pokemon Company should use another developer instead of Gamefreak. Yokai Watch looks so much better than this game.
@adam9431 Same here! I have to have it and of course all of my kids
@edgedino
1. While we don't know if we can find the old forms of Pokemon in the wild in Alola (pure speculation sugessts that probably not given the text describing the new forms was them adapting to the Alola climate) we'll at least be able to transfer them from gen 6 and vc gen 1 (since all new forms so far are gen 1 pokemon)
2. No idea how many, my guess is they'll pick a few popular Pokemon like Ninetails, a few Pokemon that fit the tropical theme of Alola like Exeggutor, and a few out of the blue ones like Sandshrew to give new forms.
3. Who knows? So far we've mainly been shown one island and a lot of Pokemon, if they decide to showcase the others we'll find out soon enough.
I'm pleasantly surprised by this new regionally-adapted mechanic (Why wasn't this in E3? That would have fit in great with their return-to-the-classics theme they had running). It certainly takes the Shellos/Gastrodon/Basculin/etc concept much farther. I would love to see more of these...plus it does not completely overwrite previous games, since people will still have to pick up previous gen games to receive the originals presumably.
As for the new Pokemon, it's nice to see some really cool new mechanics in their abilities, but hopefully their stats will complement them. I'm always worried that Pokemon-based gimmicks will go the way of Castform and lack the stats to make it a viable option.
Not really a fan of Z-moves though. Gimmicks like Mega Evolutions are always something I'm torn over. They may be cool, but the power creep can be an annoyance that could force you into using it to survive competitively, rather than having as an optional alternative to other mechanics. I hope the limitation of 1-use keeps it in check, and that they have some limitations to keep Pokemon like M. Rayquaza from getting its hands on this. Though I do find it somewhat strange that Mega Evolution has not been discussed at all in this Gen yet...
Well, the more I read about these Island Trials, the more it sounds to me as if Gyms won't return. But as long as I can run around on the same piece of grass for hours and train my little critters, not that big of a loss. This raises the question, though, what grand challenge lies for us at the end of the main story. The Elite Four?
Also, as much as I like what they do with the Alola forms, I do hope you can somehow get their Normal look into the game somehow. Maybe by transfering from a previous generation?
Finally, I do find it curious that we haven't seen new Mega Evolutions yet. Not gonna lie, I'd rather have new Megas than some Z Moves.
@ASonic3582 i meant as in like a secret hidden island not part of the 4 that has like a battle frontier or tower on it though if they do i really hope this time they allow online to work together on 2v2.
I really like the new Pokemon introduced in this batch! I love the idea of region variations for older Pokemon, and I hope the inevitable Gen 4 and 5 remakes have their own region specific Pokemon too!
I like that we're getting new forms of older Pokémon based on the region or island they're from. It makes so much sense and is much better than introducing too many new ones.
@gerebris Only if he decides to use his brain, although I doubt it
@Gorlokk I certainly hope the Gen Vs get some more love; Zoroark getting an upgrade, maybe it could learn transform. Then again that could be wishful thinking.
I wonder what shiny alola forms will look like
If they don't break mega ray quads then in any competitions with it legal it will be op>9000
Rauquaza not Ray quads stupid autocorrect! (Face palm)
First Monster Hunter got their own "elite four". Now Pokemon have their own "variants". Synergy~~~
This is looking very nice indeed, and the Z moves obviously remind me of Dragon Ball!
But, Game Freak, after this can you please make a bloody home console RPG with traits of MMOs... please?
By our powers combined....
I remember when @Gauchorino stated after the first two minute trailer was revealed that this game looked like nothing more than a cheap cash grab with no new features. Couldn't have been more wrong! That is why they say not to judge a book by its cover.
already have my bracelet z toy thing preordered
:S
oh my gosh i need that alolan sandshew!
