Minecraft: Wii U Edition proved to be a download success when it arrived on the eShop late last year, albeit Nintendo gamers have had to wait for some key updates, while the Nintendo-exclusive content announced with the launch is still a mystery. Nevertheless, developer 4J Studios is still improving the Wii U version, and has released a new patch to step it up another gear.
It's a notable update as it adds Achievements, Wii Classic Controller Support, a Story Mode skin pack and more besides. The full changelog is below.
- Added Story Mode skin pack.
- Added achievements.
- Added support for Wii Classic Controllers.
- Added new "Minecart Sounds" option to Audio Settings.
- Added Huge Mushroom Blocks to the Creative and Superflat menus.
- Improved sprint control.
- Fix for issue where the Ender Dragon would be immune to attacks.
- Fix for Slimes not spawning in certain Swamps and Slime Chunks.
- Fix for Potion of Swiftness, Potion of Slowness and Speed bonus of Beacon having no effect on the player.
- Fix for teleporting a player while they are sleeping in a Bed not working properly.
- Fix for some chunks in the Overworld not generating for clients of a multiplayer game.
- Fix for issue where Experience Orbs could not be obtained by some trades with Villagers.
- Fix for Thorns enchantment not affecting players.
- Fix for MCCE #747 - TNT cannon not working.
- Fix for MCCE #659 - Doors have a weird texture on top when open (And other sides).
- Fix for MCCE #1854 - Grass positioning is perfect.
- Fix for MCCE #1826 - White tulip description incorrect.
- Fix for MCCE #1756 - Witch Hut Bounding Box Too Small.
- Fix for MCCE #1260 - Submerged Witch Huts.
- Fix for MCCE #483 - Camera jitter and player unable to move when looking at chest you are standing on.
- Fix for MCCE #863 - The map does not work as it should (unless "View Hand" is turned on).
- Fix for MCCE #1757 - Slimes spawning in witch huts.
- Fix for MCCE #1739 - No icon in item frame map.
- Fix for MCCE #1803 - Item frames vanishing in very strange draw distance.
It appears to be a decent update, all told. If you're in the Wii U Minecraft crew check it out and let us know what you think.
With thanks to Ryan Millar for the heads up.

I decided not to get Minecraft on Wii U, mainly because of the world size. I already have the PS3 version and when I get a PS4, I can just upgrade it for a fraction of the price. Perhaps I'll wait for an NX version.
I have Minecraft on PC, Windows 10, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Amazon Fire, iOS and Android.
Do I really need it on Wii U? Not really, but there is away they can get me to buy it. Can you guess what it is?
@freaksloan Would it be the GamePad Inventory Management if and when it ever gets implemented?
Still waiting for retail... Crickets chirp
"Minecraft Wii U update!"
Gasp!
"No GamePad Items Management"
nvm
Story mode skins yet no episode 2 on Wii U yet?! It's been 3 months since they released Story Mode on Wii U, have they forgotten about it?
I own this on Wii U, Vita and PS4. But man, they just don't understand the Nintendo fanbase AT ALL.
Games like this need gamepad integration. Huge missed opportunity. Still worth buying, of course, but disappointing nonetheless.
Nice to see they got achievements in the game finally. I may be tempted to buy this when a retail version launches.
It hasn't updated yet...
I hope they fix the freezing issue. It's the only game on my wii u that freezes almost 2x a week. I don't think it has froze 2x since I got it aside from that.
Wii Classic Controller integration? What about Wii U Pro Controller Integration? Or has that already been implemented, I don't have then Wii U version?
classic controller support makes this a little more tempting since id be able to do 4 player at home (i have two classics and only one pro controller). the world size part is still what holds me back tho :3
They didn't remove Herobrine?! D:
Has anyone gotten the update yet?
someone already update?
@happylittlepigs wiiu pro controller
It works on first day
@Dannynes It's updating now
Good to know they added Classic Controller support. I could've saved myself the money on a Wii U Pro... but it's whatever I guess. I can use it on stuff like Pokken now which it's amazing on.
@3dsgeek333 Hi! Nice to see you again, 3dsgeek!
Yes! Achievements! I also can't wait to try this with my Yoshi Fight Pad controller!
Is this an achievements system like Microsoft and Sony have where you can see achievements outside the game? Doesn't look like it, and can't see it coming to the Wii U at this point, but one can dream.
@JohnnyC My Nintendo will have it. I wonder if this is in preparation of linking a My Nintendo Account to the Wii U.
@foodmetaphors World size is same as other consoles isn't it?
@MadAdam81 same size as on ps3/360 which is tiny. ps4/xbone world size is 36x bigger and pc/mobile are of course infinite
@Peace-Boy - The world size is the same. It was initially smaller because it was an update behind.
@senshu I watched a comparison video, the size is the same as the PS3/360 versions. PS4/Xbox One versions are way bigger than the others.
Yes, upon initial release. The Wii U version is now just as updated as the others, one of which was to increase the world size.
@Donutman - Mine started doing this and it turned out the air vents were clogged with dust. Been a lot better since cleaning those, not one freeze. YMMV, for what it's worth, but this game does tax the CPU and will run it little hotter than most games.
@happylittlepigs - Yes, that's already possible.
I REALLY hope this fixes whatever bug was causing my world to glitch and respawn me with nothing but a map every couple days. It's happened 3 times now. The thumbnail still looks like where I left off, but when I select it, it's a fresh start, all I've built is gone.
I'm grateful they added Classic Controller support — now I don't need to buy any more accessories just for this game. If any devs are reading this, thanks heaps.
I wondered if anyone noticed that achievements were not on Wii U until now...
@happylittlepigs yup it does have pro controller integration. This is a cool feature for me. I won't have to lug the useless gamepad with the stand in dirt block image. I patiently wait for the full gamepad support. Besides on my phone, this is the only other Minecraft I own. It is a blast playing with my oldest son.
@foodmetaphors true; knowing there is a huge unexplored world out there would be nice. But for playing with my youngest being only 6. This works out. He never leaves our "settled" area without his map or compass. Either way, I know he really won't get too crazy lost out there.
