Nintendo's library of characters is the envy of the gaming world, with a history that stretches all the way back to the dawn of the industry. While many might assume that the company's first mascot is Mario, there have been several other individuals who can lay claim to being the Japanese firm's leading character. Donkey Kong is arguably Nintendo's first success in the gaming arena, and we've had Mr. Game & Watch, too.
However, the hero of Sheriff pre-dates both Mario and Kong, and - according to YouTuber Daniel "Slopes" Ibbertson - should be considered Nintendo's first real mascot. Sheriff starred in one of Nintendo's first arcade titles and would later be resurrected in the Super Smash Bros. series - that's some serious longevity.
You can see more about the history of this character by watching the excellent video below.

A massive thanks as usual for sharing the video NintendoLife
You know it'd be kinda neat if Nintendo rebooted Sheriff. There is a real lack of cowboy games out there.
Although couldn't we technically say Dillion's Rolling Western is a reboot? Don't you keep enemies out of your territory in that game? (I never actually played it)
That would've been awesome if he was in Wild Guns for the SNES. That game was awesome, but CRAZY hard!!
Looking at him... it COULD be an early mario! #MindBlown
@djslope ....fun watch n great t-shirt(s)..think Mario was the new sheriff in town..
@SH007ME you are the 1st to notice the shirt(s) lol
@Spin It is basically a tower defense game where you are preventing the enemies from stealing the animals in your town. Unlike most tower defense games where you have little input other than tower placement in this game you can control Dillon to directly attack enemies, and you will have to because the towers alone aren't enough to stop the Grock invasion. The short answer to your question is yes you do defend your territory but there is more to the game than that, and I highly recommend you play it since it is one of my favorite games on the 3DS.
That game actually looks pretty cool! I don't usually play games from before the NES era but that game looks like fun.
Let's not forget his resurrection in Wario Ware Inc. Not only as a microgame, but there is an actual unlockable full version. But, of course, since it is a Wario game, he slapped his face on that version xD
Crazy fun and addictive game
I learned something
dont like it.nice idea for a video but i dont know...its pretty bad
Lol why didn't we talk about the Sheriff during when Smash came out
Huh. Never even heard of the Sheriff.
@djslope: Props for an informative video.
@Trinexx Huge thanks mate glad you enjoyed it
@Spin
I think the entire gaming community wants another Red Dead Redemption first.
This was a funny and very informative video! I laughed out loud a few times. And now I want to play Wario Ware. Well done!
Now where's our Amiigo Cowboy?!
I thought Sheriff was an Exidy arcade game, and Nintendo was the Japanese publisher?
(Exidy was more famous for making "Death Race". One of the first video games to be considered "too violent" in 1976. And then a decade later, they made another violent game, a light-gun shooter called Chiller where you bloodily murder innocent people, several years before Mortal Kombat.)
Thanks, didn't know I already had Sheriff on my 3DS.
I didnt found who this was. until Smash Bros 4. but i never knew he was a mascot, (tbh i thought he was a third party Character)
but pretty cool otherwise.
It still is funny seeing the nintendo logo on atari games and also two cassette music tapes I have. Didn't understand why and for what reason they went into the music genre for, but I guess that's something that I'll never figure out. The artists aren't even around anymore, and I don't think they even made a big impact...it just happened to be a few imports at the time. Anyone else know about the music of nintendo's side from the early 80's?????
