Wii Sports is the biggest-selling retail game of all time. Sure, the fact it was bundled with many Wii systems outside of Japan made that a reality, but it's still an extraordinary statistic.
It's a title with an interesting history, too, especially in its integral role in helping the concept of Mii characters take shape. Other games related to Wii Sports also have intriguing little facts to consider, including another example of how an executive-level bit of over-promising forced the development team of Wii Sports Resort to include Golf.
Did You Know Gaming tackles Wii Sports and related games in its video below, and it's certainly worth a watch for learning more about an integral part of Nintendo history. There's no mention of Wii Sports Club on Wii U because, well, there's not much of interest to say about that...

Ahhhhhh
So many memories of teaching my grandmother how to play fake golf
I don't care what the haters say - Wii Sports was one of the most engaging multiplayer games I'd played in a long time! Sure, the waggle was hit and miss, in terms of accuracy, but it was still incredibly immersive and great fun with a few friends or relatives in the mix.
Of course, to date, no one has ever beat me in Wii Tennis, which might be why I love the game so much Anyway, it will be interesting to see how (and to what extent) the NX utilizes Miis this time around.
I just watched this video last night.
You know, Wuhu Island may not have been as heavily utilized as Shigeru Miyamoto may have originally intended, but to be fair, it has been an important location in several series outside of Wii Sports: Pilotwings, Wii Fit, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros. all come to mind, and there may be more I'm not thinking of.
I wonder how much more Miyamoto had in mind, and whether we'll ever see the island live up to it's full potential, or even become prominent again?
I suppose it may end up becoming as unique to the Wii generation as the Wii Remote itself.
Edit: I had a feeling I was missing something, so I looked it up and realized that there was indeed a Wuhu Island track in Mario Kart 7. I've never played it, so I wouldn't know.
I wish Nintendo would of updated their Miis since Wii with new noses, eyes, etc. Because it end up being really limited compared to similar characters on other consoles.
@InvisiBulbasaur
There were actually two Wuhu Island courses in Mario Kart 7 to represent Miis, both quite enjoyable.
I loved Wii sports, but does anyone else reall hate the design of the miis? They're just so... bland.
@MarinoKadame I agree. I think it's a shame that Mii character creation hasn't evolved much in the last ten years (wow that makes me feel old), and moving forward with Miitomo and especially NX, I'd really like to see more options.
There's really no reason why they can't keep adding new "parts" to each system's Mii Maker while retaining the classic and simplistic feel of the original Mii characters.
@swordx Haha, I had a feeling someone would point that out before I edited my comment.
You're right! I've never played MK7 so I wouldn't know, but I am still a bit surprised a Wuhu Island track wasn't remixed in Mario Kart 8!
Maybe in Mario Kart 9.
@InvisiBulbasaur The fact that we can't actually change the miis shirt design is really dumb.
Miis are BORING.
I'd call the success of this game/franchise as a pivotal success story in the popularity of the Wii. With hindsight, I wonder if Nintendo land should have been bundled for free with every Wii u and if it would have made much difference if they did!?!
Either way, imo, the nx lauch should come with some kind of hardware utilizing free game....
Maka Wuhu and Wuhu Loop are great Mariokart tracks.
Wii Sports Resort would be one of my top ten games for anyone who is thinking about getting a Wii (or getting Wii games for their Wii U) to pick up. Also playing a lot of that had me ready for Skyward Sword, so I got the controls in no time.
@NinjaWaddleDee Gasp Bad! xD
Joking Wise, i thought Wii Sports was a good game.
although, i could see why some people don't find the Miis, that interesting, and why some people do. they star on their own game, and from joining Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart.
@Captain_Gonru Yup, and that is exactly one of the reasons why I still play the GameCube version instead of the extremely fickle Wii version.
@MysteryAozz I could also why some people don't find the Miis that interesting and of course everybody has a right to their own option...
@MysteryAozz Haha yeah I guess you're right. A bit more customization though is all they really need.
Not having a proper new Wii Sports game for Wii U is telling of Nintendo's confusion. They just lost the plot completely this generation.
Several gave said it already, but Miis are too limited. They need more customizability. Maybe not Sims level of customization, but it would be nice to have more control over the rest of the body, not just the face (while still keeping it family friendly). I'd also like to see better detail on Miis, since Miis were low detail 10 years ago. (Oh, and I haven't tried the Wii U's feature for taking your picture and making a Mii of it, but on the 3DS it was laughably bad. Nintendo should fix that on the NX.)
One of the mii's I made.
I'm still disappointed that the Wii series of games didn't really pan out at all for the WiiU. Although Wii Fit U is still really good imo, it's just apparently the same thing again for the third time. But I never had a Wii Fit game before.
So much hatred toward Miis in the comments...
@dizzy_boy THAT can be alot of different things.
@Mahe How is Wii Sports Club not a new proper Wii Sports game? It's pretty new, it's by Nintendo and is a sequel to the Wii Sports franchise. What am I missing here?
@syrilram It's a remake of the first one, and a crappy one at that. The original has it beat 40 - 0.
You're delusional if you think the first one was better than the new game. The new one has motion plus controls, online matches, better graphics, miiverse integration, and more game modes. What does Wii Sports have that Wii Sports Club doesn't?
