Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty finally arrived on Wii U recently, which is an excellent re-imagining of the classic Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Now it seems that developer Oddworld Inhabitants is planning to repeat the trick for its next release.
It's announced Oddworld: Soulstorm for a planned 2017 arrival; based on the official website it does sound like another reimagining, this time of the original follow-up Oddworld: Exoddus. The narrative below certainly reads like this is a variation on that title.
Witness Abe's horrifying conflict with a terrifying new machination.
A fresh narrative - a complete story retake inspired by our original tale.
A big visual and cinematic leap aiming to break new ground for Oddworld.
Intelligent new mechanics, twisted new devices enabling highly explosive deviousness.
A dark parable that tells an epic tale of a volatile society pushed to its limits.
Of course, with the release so far away the studio is unwilling to commit to platforms, though we asked anyway and got sent the following statement.
We're delighted with the response to Oddworld: Soulstorm today, and look forward to sharing more of the project. In terms of specifics regarding release, we aren't announcing any platforms at this time.
Considering how determined the company was to release New 'n' Tasty on Nintendo hardware, we can only hope that the upcoming NX system will be sufficiently viable for the studio to consider when working on the release for next year.

Sweet babies.
Here's to an NX version, assuming it's a higher spec surely, it will iron out those niggling Wii U frame rate issues.
In saying that, on a positive note, it hasn't spoilt my enjoyment of New N' Tasty
Oddworld isn't already dark and twisted? People getting ground into food and drink, people committing suicide on screen and the main character getting pulverised both through normal play and a bad ending aren't dark and twisted?
Should be fun
Oddworld: Soulstorm? Sounds spooky.
Still waiting for Stranger's Wraith...
Is Stranger's Wrath even in production still for the Wii U?
Abe's Exoddus was everything Oddyssee was, except more. Weirder, funnier, scarier, more surprising and more messed up. Not to mention the memorable characters, the homing explosive fart mechanic (you read that right), the Shrykull... the list goes on and on. SoulStorm alludes to the drink of the same name, but I'm not going to spoil anything about it: either play Exoddus, or wait for this remake to hit our good ol' Wii Us.
Anyone else misread oddworld as SteamWorld for a moment?
My hype skyrocketed before violently crashing back into the dirt.
I think oddworld looks like a great series but it just doesn't interest me for whatever reason.
Ah, yes. Oddworld. The only reason I was even aware of this series back in the day was its stealing the thunder of Neverhood/Skullmonkeys.
I suck at Oddworld games, but I love the lore and characters so the series turns up a lot on my YouTube 'let's play' playlists. I hope this does as well as New n' Tasty so we get a new 'Abe' game. I like Munch, but Abe was my favorite protagonist of the Oddworld games.
Coming to NX I hope.
Can't wait to get this on my Xbox One! New 'n' Tasty's been great, I hope this hits as many platforms as possible at launch.
@Vincent294 remake was better on ps4.this one will be to.I also got the Wii u version just to show support.but PlayStation is where abe belongs anyway.since the 90s.he was PlayStation.
@Slim1999
Actually only the first two were, Munch's Oddysee and Strangers Wrath were both Xbox Original exclusives.
MS bought the exclusivity rights and then failed to spend any advertising on them, especially Stranger's Wrath, which Oddworld Inhabitants were very upset about and was the start of their demise.
It just about killed the company, according to the Oddworld book I've read anyhow.
Still absolutely stoked another Oddworld game is coming, my favourite franchise.
@MarinaKat
Yes, The Art of Oddworld. It isn't just the Art though as it has info about how Abe originally had four fingers but they changed it to three.
It also has info about each of the games and their characters, characters that were scrapped, the original concept art and lots of info about the games, great read, especially if like me, you love the Art and lore of the franchise.
I could be mistaken about the MS handling of the exclusivity being in the book, but I know they definitely weren't happy about it and came out and publicly stated that MS were more interested in throwing money at Halo and their own IP's and left Stranger's Wrath with little to no advertising at the time.
It's been a while since I read it but the fact remains, they were MS exclusives, unlike the previous two.
Now I want to re read it, any excuse will do.
Like everyone is saying, that game was already awesome with dark humor. Looking forward to this new one!
@MarinaKat
No worries, there is more art than reading, but the reading is great for Oddworld fans.
Thanks for the heads up on the Mega Man book, might have to look into it.
Nice and all, especially for us Nintendo gamers who missed out on those games (assuming this one also comes to Wii u, or NX. May take a long time though), but what about NEW games?! They had rumored new games for ages, like the shepherd-one. Yes, I want all the old games on my Nintendo devices, but they should also move the series forward!!
