With Terraria on the 3DS, Minecraft on Wii U and Terraria coming to Wii U soon, there's arguably never been a better time to be a Nintendo block-builder.
Looking at the first direct capture from the Wii U game alongside some 3DS footage, Dean Scott - Producer on Terraria at 505 Games - described the challenge of developing the game on Nintendo platforms. "It's been a long road to a 3DS version. It seemed for a time there was too much to condense into the 3DS. Now it's out there and the reception has been overwhelmingly positive."
He expanded on what features are included in the game. "The dividing lines aren't as clear here. We took the 1.2 mobile version and then added mine carts and fishing and then obviously we overhauled the UI for two screens. We also pulled in other bits from 1.3 like quick stacking to chests and slimes dropping more stuff."
Comparing what was possible on the New 3DS, Scott expanded further. "On the New 3DS it is 60 FPS while on the original 3DS it's 30 FPS. We could have gone further on the New 3DS but because multiplayer needs to work with different versions of the game we needed the world sizes and content to be the same. We are committed to updating the 3DS version post-launch with more content from the PC coming early next year. We are also looking into larger world sizes on the New 3DS."
Comparing the 3DS development to the upcoming Wii U version, Scott talked about the studios involved. "The 3DS version was handled by the same studio that did the mobile version, Code Glue. The Wii U version was handled by Engine Software, they took the console version and looked to adapt it to Wii U."
When asked about Minecraft, a title which Terraria has been compared to, Scott addressed it in a roundabout way. "We've made the most of having two screens with touch to build on GamePad or map or inventory. We've made the effort to make that game make sense on Wii U." This comment is clearly directed at the Wii U port of Minecraft, which makes little use of the second screen.
Despite the little dig, Scott is pleased to see Minecraft on the Wii U, and feels there's more than enough room on the system for the two titles. "I'm actually pretty positive about Minecraft," he says. "Anything that can help reinvigorate the Wii U platform can only benefit us. I know there's a bit of rivalry between the Minecraft and Terraria communities but I think we can happily co-exist on the Wii U."

Excited for the Wiiu version. Yup yup
I would argue this is all because of the success of Super Mario Maker (and to a lesser extent sales of Disney Infinity)
I still want this at some point but I already have far too much to play. Maybe in a sale I'll take the plunge as it does look interesting.
I never really "got" Terraria. I like Minecraft but couldn't get into Terraria. Curious to see how this does on Nintendo consoles.
@tysonfury I think you're right, along with the apparent success the console had on Black Friday. It looks like the consumer base has finally risen enough to be considered profitable.
I've been into the 3DS Terraria and Wii U Minecraft a lot lately, completely neglecting my other games. It really is a great time to be a Nintend block creator.
Not sure why Minecraft has never piqued my interest but Terraria seems more up my alley.
Ahm... what is that? I can hardly read the numbers in the item bar on the top of the Wii U screen! It's way too small. I hope they fix that before Terraria gets a release on Wii U.

Is something wrong with this sentence or is it just me? D:
I just realized that SMM is the block builder for people that don't "get" block builders. Minecraft and its ilk make NO sense to me (has nothing to do with my age...I've got a coworker that is 51 and you will have to pry Minecraft from her cold, dead hands) but I'll spend hours making levels in SMM. I will be trying dragon quest builders when it hits ps4 though. It is good to see that so many playstyles are getting their own games.
@IxnayontheCK The same here. I love Minecraft but I never really got into Terraria. I am gong to buy both the 3DS and Wii U versions to play with my kids and support 505 Games. Although I don't really know how much I'll play them beyond local multi.
Terraria was better in mobile high end devices and mid end range devices was about 80 fps without drop, the game was absolutely neat for some reason, and hey no rivalry i don't like "Enemy Things" terraria and minecraft it's same as old blocks dudes... because minecraft the first release on wii u so the "Builds Beta version is on working on it not only wii u on mobile too" just looking in the depth of graphics i think minecraft was better.... in my mind though
Shame no release date, but reassuring about the gamepad, and I really can't wait to get this - it's dirt cheap on the other systems though, so over £20 and it won't be day one sadly.
Is there an ETA on the Terraria review?
And I'm just sitting here liking Don't Starve more than both of them combined.
"With Terraria on the 3DS, Minecraft on Wii U and Terraria coming to Wii U soon, there's arguably never been a better for to be a Nintendo block-builder."
Uh. Maybe wanna run that sentence by us again?
I love Terraria but the 3DS version is in dire need of updates.
They need to add online and bigger world sizes... And to allow more than 3 worlds.
And saving your game takes ages, longer than any other game I've seen. It can take 3-4 minutes sometimes, which is a big problem as you only get tiny worlds. So to make up for it you switch between the 3, but my god does it take forever. Don't accidentally open the wrong world cos that might take 4 minutes to close.
The 'some 1.3 content' doesn't work like it should... Its like they programmed it in an evening.
Great game, rushed to market for Christmas, needs updates
There should've been 3d on the 3ds. I really like the 3d effect on 2d games like cave story shovel knight and 1001 spikes. I hope they include the 3d effect in the future
Minecraft and Terraria are both exceptional games, there's no reason for any petty rivalry.
@Ryu_Niiyama I'm with you there on Minecraft. I simply do not relate. I am curious about Terraria tho- on the Wii U. This will supposedly be the definitive version.....
I now have Terraria on PC and 3DS. Soon Wii U. Soon.
Ima grab the physical Wii U version, unless they were to offer a crossbuy promo of some sort. Wouldn't even need to be buy once for both versions- even a "buy one get other for $5" would be enough for me.
Terraria is clearly the better game of the 2 but you do have to dig into it to see it.
You'll nevr hear this from this site of course. You can see the huge bias here and thats the reason that still to this day they havent posted a review of terraria but minecrafts review was posted the day BEFORE the title launched
