Though we're still waiting for it to launch here in the West, Japan has already received the pleasure of experiencing Fire Emblem Fates, the latest in Nintendo's punishing SRPG series. In order to boost the release's popularity (and doubtless to make some lovely merchandising profit), Nintendo also launched a trading card game alongside the recent 3DS release. Though it may be a fairly unexceptional card game, it nonetheless offers fans a chance to collect cards featuring some excellent art of their favorite Fire Emblem characters.
There are currently two series of cards available for purchase, with series 3 launching on 10th December and series 4 launching on 17th March. Series 3 will feature cards from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem Fates: Invisible Kingdom (evidently the neutral third story path). Perhaps more interestingly, though, is that series 4 will be heavily featuring cards from the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, which apparently launches before the end of 2015 in Japan. Here's the list of cards:
- Chrom and Itsuki Aoi (Genei Ibun Roku #FE)
- Shiida and Oribe Tsubasa (Genei Ibun Roku #FE)
- Cain and Akagi Toma (Genei Ibun Roku #FE)
- Virion and Yumizuru Eleonora (Genei Ibun Roku #FE)
- Oribe Tsubasa (Genei Ibun Roku #FE, promotional card from the Genei Ibun Roku #FE Fortissimo Editions)
- Hardin and Malliesia (Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem)
- Cynthia and Donnell (Fire Emblem Awakening)
Given how the series is more popular in Japan and has more releases there, it seems unlikely that Nintendo will launch a Western equivalent of Fire Emblem 0 when Fates launches here next year, but perhaps we'll be surprised.
What do you think? Would you like Nintendo to release Fire Emblem 0 in the West? Which of the upcoming Fire Emblem games are you most looking forward to? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Fire emblem... 0? Oh okay it's fire emblem cipher.
These cards have been out for at least a year now. I would buy some, but they're like 30 bucks for a pack of 10 random cards online. Sigh Tharja will forever allude me...
The more I read about the upcoming Fire Emblem game(s?), the more confused I am.
@stipey I'm with you. I think Fates is going to be pretty much just a better version of Awakening, but I haven't the slightest clue what to expect from that crossover. I'm keeping an open mind, but I'm not too hopeful for that one. It looks more Shin Megami Tensei than Fire Emblem and I'm not really a fan of that franchise.
@MitchVogel It doesn't look very much like Shin Megami Tensei to me either, and I am a fan of that series, ha.
Even with Fates, I'm still confused though. From what we can tell, the UK version is only coming in one edition, but we don't know if that means we have to pay for the other storyline as DLC, and then there's the neutral third storyline but how on earth do you acquire that?! The whole thing has just been poorly communicated so far by Nintendo. It's weird.
I'm just hoping we get Hardin in both his cavalier/paladin and emperor form. Honestly, Hardin was more memorable as a villain, but he was still amazing as the duke who destroyed Aurelius' slave trade and Macedon's rule over his home.
Ok for those of you unable to understand whats going on with the game and how to get the 3 storylines I'm here to help you out. First off, the Nohr storyline is MUCH more akin to classic FE. It's nothing like Awakening except for the look, it has a much more sinister and serious tone than Hoshido (Invivsible Kingdom takes the cake though). Depending on the method used to purchase the game(s) you'll have a few options.
-Physical route - should you buy the physical copy of the game you can purchase the other route for $15 as a digital copy as well as the third route Invisible Kingdom (IK)
-Digital Route- If you dont buy the two games at the same time you wont be given the choice like I was given with the special edition cartridge (all 3 on one cart it's amazing and I hope it gets released in the west prob not though) Instead you'll be forced to side (it treats you as if you yourself sided with whoever you bought) with whatever kingdom you first bought aka you buy Nohr, At the end of Ch6 you side with Nohr automagically. If you buy both digitally however you get to choose at that moment whom you side with Same with the UK release if it's on one cart (which doesnt make any sense to me I think that's just a place holder but I could be wrong)
And also to Uzuki as of right now you can purchase 15 packs for 50 bucks and import it with 2 day shipping on amazon. 20 bucks for a starter of 50 cards already to go as well. I highly recommend it, it's an amazing TCG ta ta for now guys
@stipey @MitchVogel
I'm a fan of both and I see plenty of references to both sides. Hell, many of you guys wouldn't know without fan subs but Istuki is litterally Marth growing up in modern Tokyo. I mean, Tsubasa being a childhood friend and gets Shiida as a mirage? (which have as much willpower as a SMT demon btw)That's no coincidence.
@SamirMalik
That totally makes sense. I suppose for me, the alienation is coming from the fact that despite references to both series, SMT x FE actually doesn't share many mechanics from the previous games. I guess it is closer to SMT's battles, but as a whole the game just seems super-removed from both series.
(Having said that, the Persona vibes in the art style are strong!)
@Level99Studios
Thanks for helping with that. It's still a bit strange that it seems (although unconfirmed afaik) that the US will have physical releases of two FE:Fates paths and the UK, only one. Just seems that there's a lot of general uncertainty that needs to be cleared up by a scarily-silent Nintendo. Most folks are not as clued up as you are!
Cards. No. This is just one step away from Amiibo cards. The one's that here in the UK anyway, are arip off. Originally advertised at £3.49 for a pack of three cards are now £4.99 for a pack of three.
I don't play Animal Crossing so I am not affected by this, but I do play Fire Emblem, but if I can't play the game without add ons I won't play it at all.
Nintendo is in danger of reverting back to being a playing card/toy complany who produce a few games.
@stipey Well there is the weapon triangle and supports being layered on SMT's weakness and battle system. We have yet to see more due to the language barrier.
It doesn't seem very alienating if you ask me. the best thing to do is to understand that there taking the source material but viewing it from a different angle. Like Ganondorf in Smash. the focus was not on how he moves as a character but how he is as a character when implementing his play style. that's why he's all about prediction and strategy first and formost.
@FierceRagnar The mechanics, personalities of our humans and creators speak otherwise
@stipey Nintendo will be considering how much they can squeeze out of the UK gamers before packaging the game.
AC Amiibo cards from Amazon in the UK are £4.95 for 3 cards. From Amazon US $5.99 (£4) for 6 cards.
Even allowing for our vat being higher than US tax, we are still paying more towards Nintendo's losses than the US.
Are there any cards in this new TC who are using older characters (with the original chara-designer style)?
(I remember back in the SFC era, another TCG was out in Japan)
I would love if the cards were released here. Thought about importing them a few months back but, meh. I can't read Japanese.
And I'm super hyped for both Fates and SMT x FE. That crossover is looking REALLY good, hope we get that Fortissimo Edition too...
I want everything! Fates! Genei! 0! 25th aniversary art book! EVERYTHING!
I want both
@zool Uh, they're just trading cards. They don't add anything to the game.
@LztheQuack yet! Who knows what codes are lurking with-in the game.
"The latest in Nintendo's punishing SRPG series"
Except now you can't die, And your weapons don't break, and all the type advantages are changed.
I'm still pissed off at this game.
@zool Actually, there are codes for some DLC characters in Fire Emblem Fates, such as Minerva, Marth, and Masked "Marth" (Lucina with her mask on).
I can't help but worry just how poorly NoA is going to market Fates. Seriously, most of the time, I don't see them do it right and when they do it right, its for important games like Super Mario Maker.
As for FE, I'll buy Fates no matter what fate its in!
@stipey @SamirMalik Coming from a member of Serene's Forest who has paid some attention to the SMT fandom, the alienation comes from the fact that the game will feature exclusively Akaneia characters (meaining 3/4s of the series is ignored entirely), and the very bright colors and peppy idol theme is significantly more akin to Persona than anything that's come out mainline SMT.
Doesn't help that the first trailer showed artwork of characters all across the Fire Emblem series and the SMTI-III + Strange Journey protagonists. People had only that to go on for two years.
If you want to see some of the actual card art, here: http://nintendoeverything.com/genei-ibun-roku-fe-confirmed-for-fire-emblem-0s-fifth-series-of-cards/
@J-Manix98 As am I. Have you seen the new weapons triangle? It looks like they threw every weapon into a blender and used whatever came out. I'm going to have to rewrite all my battle strategies around this. How frustrating.
@Soren
Dude, I know its obnoxious. You can tell the developers really buckled under the pressure of the begginers, and people who just want to play for character shipping. I hope they bring back the triangle in future titles. Anyhoo, I'm probably gonna get this game used.
Phoenix Mode though? Was that REALLY necessary?? Ugh!
Amiibo FE card please, Nintendo?
@J-Manix98 "You can tell the developers really buckled under the pressure of the begginers, and people who just want to play for character shipping."
Yeah, I hate developers who prefer more money over quality games. It's so obvious who they're pandering to it hurts.
"Phoenix Mode though? Was that REALLY necessary?? Ugh!"
But, but, what about all the people who want to "experience the epic story" without going through all the "difficult and intense" battles?
Um, it's called Fire Emblem Cipher?
Also, as much as I appreciate the #FE cards, could we get some cards from anything other than FE1, 13, and 14 first? It's like IS forgot everything besides those games in the series existed.
@J-Manix98 @Soren Yes you can die. Just because a super easy mode was added doesn't make the normal modes nonexistant. So why complain? especially since Pheonix mode doesn't even effect the main modes at all does not even reducing the quality of the experience you prefer. And just because weapons don't break doesn't mean the game is going to be any less challenging. Also, the triangle is still there. Just modified again. Why is this any surprise? FE does this commonly. Anyways, instead on one weapon in each of the 3 areas there are now two weapons.
rather than talking down on people because of their preference even though their preference will not affect your experience why don't you guys actually remember what happened in older games and just play.
@Fudgenuggets So far, I remember seeing Marth and allies, Ike, Lyn, Chrom and allies and Kamui and allies. The game is building. Just have some patience
@SamirMalik
Hey its nothing personal, we're just laughing at the fact that they saw a "Phoenix Mode" necessary at all! I mean, if you are playing FE on Phoenix Mode, you might as well just play a dating simulater at this point. I mean, the battles are completely pointless at this point, in order for it to make any actual sense, you would have to literally suck SO bad, that you manage to get completely swept in one turn on easy Mode! Casual mode made a lot of sense, and I can totally respect not wanting to deal with perma death, but immortality?
And weapons breaking was one of the hardest aspect of Lunatic mode in Awakening, if you didn't budget you weapon uses wisely, the game was literally impossible to beat early on. Not anymore! Weapons breaking was a huge part of the strategy in the early levels of Lunatic, but now that challenge is gone.
And I was merely misinformed on the triangle thing, I looked it up and its not as big a deal. But it does add multiple weaknesses to weapons, which again, is making things easier then they need to be.
And then gay marriage seemed unnecasarry IMO, but whatever. Again they did it for shippers.
All in all, though yes I do realize that I do not have to use any features I'm unhappy with (except weapon uses) but we were just making fun of the stupidity of Phoenix mode.
Have a good one.
That's not "Random", it's legitimate Nintnedo news.
@J-Manix98 That was the whole point of Pheonix mode. There was even an interview about it. It's for people who struggled with the game, even on newcomer. As much as I think it's ridiculous that people couldn't get past newcomer, it gives I.S. a good enough reason to add it.
Lunatic mode wasn't even a fair fight. You can go on and on about strategy but in the end you were at the mercy of the RNG. Not your wits. And you can hold 5 of the same weapon anyways so it's not like it mattered.
And speaking of weapons, older games had weapons that REVERSED the triangle. And tomes even had their own triangle. And you know what? The games remained challenging but fair through out the whole play time. So that means the new triangle system isn't going to make the game any easier especially since now your opponent can do everything you do unlike Awakening. It's a fair fight now.
Also, only your own character can romance those characters. As odd as I think it is, let me remind you that it's still a RPG. Role Playing Game.
@CrazedCavalier That's the thing. It's not exclusively about the main SMT games. It's using SMT as a whole. Hell, one set of characters in the original trailer was from a spin off that spawned Persona. "SMT if...". But even with that said, the first trailer was nothing more than a comfirmation of the colaboration 1 month after it started. (The games shown were SMT, II, Nocturne, if..., and IV)
Also, Persona only had one Idol character. Devil Survivor Overclocked had two and even featured music as a way that demons were summoned out of hacked 3DS systems. Devil Survivor Break Record also had one or two. Even with that said, the lyrics of the first song was anything but peppy.
As for Fire Emblem, that region is where most players were first introduced to the series, me included via Shadow Dragon. So making it a starting point for what could potentially become its own subseries in the Fire Emblem franchise is not a bad way to start.
> Would you like Nintendo to release Fire Emblem 0 in the West?
Hell Yes!
> Which of the upcoming Fire Emblem games are you most looking forward to?
Vestaria Saga. Though technically not a Fire Emblem game, it is directed by series creator Shouzou Kaga, features work from other retired IS veterans, and mechanically/strategically/story wise it's what I've come to know and love. It's like comfor food. And best of all, it's free, in 2 parts (each of which 60 hours long) and features 5 hour levels!
@SamirMalik
It took a great deal of thought to arrange certain units so that nobody got slaughtered on chapter 2 (I was stuck for days on that level) , and was very rewarding once completed.
Without weapons breaking, all I would have had to do is send Chrom and Fredrick out in the middle with an "indestructible Silver lance". And sweep everyone. But it was designed in such a way that if you had been over using your S lance up to this point (which is VERY easy to do), it made chapter 2 EXTREMELY difficult, if not impossible. And in order to not over use the S lance, you had to move your units ways that would take extra valuable turns to trade all the Iron/bronze weapons to Fredrick, which, if you weren't thinking ahead, was VERY hard to do effectively in chapter 2. Not to mention, that early on, everyone but Fred+Chrom is pathetic, and stands no chance if caught off gaurd on their own. So you have to worry about that too!
Weapon uses are extremely important in high level play, especially if you are a completionist and don't want any units to die.
And yes, I am very aware of Weapon triangle variations, and tbh this one really isn't that bad. Not a huge fan of double weaknesses, but they are balanced by double advantages so its really fine.
And as far as Phoenix Mode goes, as a FE veteran, you must admit that it is stupid as crap. Idc how "fair" it is, and I 100% realize that I am in no way required to utilize it, but that doesn't make it any less stupid. I mean, there is literally no point to playing the game if you play Phoenix Mode. You could literally just skip your turn and not move a single unit the whole battle and still win. This is made that much more possible with unlimited Weapon uses!
Again, I understand I do not have to use it, but I cannot help but make fun of how stupid it is.
@J-Manix98 I'm a veteran as well. And no. It isn't stupid. The cause and effect that led to it's existance is stupid but not the thing itself. Pheonix mode will mostly be played by those who enjoy the story and characters. Problem?
Still going on about "high level play"? I said it before and I'll say it again, Lunatic isn't high level strategy. Lunatic is being at the mercy of a dice roll generator. It won't matter how you place your units, the hit rate is all dependant on IRL luck. Nothing more. Nothing less. Awakening is considered to be the most unbalance Fire Emblem in the series so far for a reason.
@SamirMalik
Yes, it is stupid. Paying $40. For a game, that you have zero intention of ACTULLY playing, just to "experience the story" is really dumb. The story is okay, bit that is only half if not, a third of the game! You can buy great fictional book for 5-10 dollars!
And no, Lunatic is NOT all down to randoms generators. The ONLY thing random about it is enemy criticals. Other than that, the enemies all attack you in according to where you move your units. Which is why it is NOT all up to "Dice Rolls",
So gripe all you want about how "unbalanced" it is.
It sounds to me, like someone had a hard time with the game and gave up in frustration, and instead of admitting that, is deciding to just call it "Unbalanced"... But don't worry, there's always Phoenix Mode for ya'!
And by the way, if you have the EXPonential Growth map unlocked, the game is only truly "Lunatic" for the first few levels. Once you gain access to level grinding things get easier.
I am done here.
@J-Manix98 Paying €40 for a game and enjoying it how you like? The world is ending...(facepalm) there are so many story driven games out there and games that offer a way to only experience the story. if anything that's bringing it to another audience who simply does not like Strategy RPGs but they find the story and characters of Fire Emblem intriguing.
The random number generator ruined it. they get ten times more criticals and you barely get one. nowhere. Add that on top of the fact that the miss rate on your own units is also really high. and yes I know about that adapting to positioning. it's been a part of Fire Emblem for a long time. It's a chess type AI. Nothing new and consistently used. But layer that on top of what I just said about RNG and it doesn't become a challenge. it becomes a chore at a casino.
you really want to talk to me about the game being balance? during the latter half of the story I was able to beat everyone by exclusively using Robin and Chrom paired up. you can not argue with that by saying the game is balanced. And saying "But don't worry, there's always Phoenix Mode for ya'!" in response to me saying it's unbalanced really goes to show just how well you understand balancing.
and pay to win...yay..... older Fire Emblem games almost never relied on grinding. You level up once and move on. and if you did not level up your characters earlier when going from chapter to chapter that was mostly your fault. Not the game's.
@SamirMalik
Look dude, I'm not saying that the game is perfect. Okay? It has its flaws. I can totally agree that during the later portions of the game, your characters get really OP. But IMO, that's the fun part about Awakening. I Love the older FE games, and don't consider Awakening to be anything "better". It's just different, and I like it. getting to that godly power level is just something that has never been in an FE game before, and its fun! The DLC that was made available, REALLY leveled the playing field once your units got to those levels anyway, so it gave you something else to work at post game, and it required ALL of your units to be that level, not just Robin+Chrom.
And ummm... A chore at a casino? Don't you think that's a bit extreme?
Okay I get it, crit rate is slightly increased on enemy units.... That's the point of Lunatic. Making it harder, not just by adding more units, but by making those units more powerful/annoying!
I mean, in early game Lunatic, if you don't plan your moves right you will get killed regardless In 2 hits... So what do you do if someone crits you? You reset! That's how everyone plays FE, and always has. I mean, crit has been around since game 1 and has always been a threat, you could be winning and before you know it you are dead because of a crit. Nothing new, they just raised that chance a little bit in Lunatic. Hardly a "chore at a casino"!
But enough about awakening. You've made your point, and are entitled to your opinion, and I to mine.
But, "Paying €40 for a game and enjoying it how you like? The world is ending...(facepalm)". I never said anything like that. I don't give a monky fart how you spend your money, I was just saying that I think it's stupid, because story is only half or less of the game, and if you are playing through the game, dreading the battles (either because they are too hard, or too boring) then you would probably be happier with a a good TV show, or a book.
But, Please don't bad mouth Awakening for being " unbalanced" and then go on to defend Phoenix Mode and Nerfed difficulty to come in Fates. Lunatic Mode is just as much an option as Phoenix Mode is!
Let's just agree to disagree. I hope you have a great day!
