With around a month to go until release Nintendo is stepping up its efforts with Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, one of the Wii U's key Holiday releases. Following its brief appearance at E3 the title has been playable at a few expos and gaming events, and the latest trailer now shows us a slightly expanded cast.
In terms of new characters shown off we have Waluigi, Boo and Daisy. Boo was particularly popular - or not, depending on individual preferences - in the original Nintendo 64 title courtesy of his outrageous trick shots.
It's a pretty short video but you can see it below. Let us know what you think, and keep an eye out for a preview from us later this month.

I hope there will be a lot more presented in a direct.
Not really feeling it yet personally....
@NintyMan the only thing that would get me to buy another Mario Tennis would be the inclusion of non-Nintendo characters.
Needs more actual game info other than characters.
@Parkour_LMan - "in a direct"
Thats funny, the first thing I thought was - "Well, this gets us that much closer to there not being another ND." I don' think there's all that much left to talk about for this game that couldn't be done in a Treehouse Live. Same for XCX. Live is cool, everybody likes Live. And you can't top Muppets, so why bother producing an ND?
@NintyMan "quite a few new characters in this game, perhaps even from outside Mario games."
Skins that you can unlock w/ their amiibo.
Nice to see NoA Tweet about a Youtube video. Actually it's nice to see them make a Tweet w/o there being a bruhaha about it. Use that social media Ninty.
Motion controls? If I remember correctly, they demoed it with traditional controls. They better not forget about MotionPlus!
@rjejr King K Rool using an upcoming Smash amiibo? Please Nintendo?
So far, nothing's come close to the N64 and GBC versions for me. Probably nostalgia, but later games haven't really offered anything that new to excite me.
Speaking of the roster though, I know Camelot were fairly daring with the N64 version in terms of reintroducing some older faces and bringing in Waluigi, and they all became mainstays after that. I wonder if they'll ever do the same again. I've always thought Pauline and Stanley would make a decent pairing ala Mario/Luigi, Peach/Daisy etc.
@NintyMan So that GameInformer article states that there is no motion controls.
Mario Power Tennis was amazing. 3DS was meh. This doesn't look much better than the 3DS version.
Nobody has mentioned this, but I'm guessing the weird rainbow hit they do near the end of the trailer is going to be a new ability called the ultra smash...
Still looking forward to this game. I played Power Tennis and VB Mario's Tennis, so I'm decently versed in the Mario Tennis style of gameplay.
@IceClimbers Maybe they can make Super Mario Sluggers NX as a launch title. Make your team by buying amiibo. Well not the entire team, that has to be in the game, just the extra guys like him.
It's cool to see some returning characters, especially Boo, but this title is seriously missing in substinance. I hope the game's only new feature is not the Mega Mushroom. It seems really gimmicky and forced to me, but I do believe the idea has potential. I would be all for more power-ups and such though. That can really change up the court: for example, the Ice Flower causes the ball to release a trail of snow that creates ice on the court once fallen, making it slippery for your opponents.
Also, Waluigi confirmed before Wario? Looks like he's moving up in life.
One of my anticipated games since I've never played a Mario Tennis before. My kid and I will love this.
WAHHHH!!!!
That's me officially excited mostly because of Waluigi.
@Captain_Toad You just want Shulk in it, don't ya?
no rosalina no buy
@rjejr That'd be awesome. A new Mario Strikers game would be awesome too. Needs Waluigi's taunt though.
@SMW That's what I was thinking. This is a much tougher sell to me without them. One of the very few games I demand them for. * Fingers crossed *
Edit: just read your 2nd post confirming no motion controls. This game better get 9's from everybody to sway me
Motion controls ruined Mario Tennis.
@Discostew You know me all too well.
I'm getting this game day one, even if it may not be the most innovative game in the series. But I love tennis, and Mario Tennis is always great fun, at least when there's no OP customisation going on like in the 3DS version. Miis ruined the entire experience there if you ask me.
He has arrived...
I'm getting the feeling that there is no significant single player modes. Hope I'm wrong.
Anybody else miss the Special Shots like in Mario Power Tennis?
Still not interested in the slightest, it's such a disappointment for the Wii U's Christmas games nothing really new and appealing at all ....😪
This tells me there's no direct this week.
I like how Waluigi takes off his hat, lol he's never done that before?
No hype. Zero hype. Skipping this.
@NintendoFan64 WAHH!
If this has online, I might get it. I don't even like tennis that much!
@HyrulianOfHyrule So you have no interest in Xenoblade Chronicles X I assume.
@MasterWario I don't know, but that surprised me as well!
@ShadowLuigi2 Yes.
@Mario_maniac Yeah Donkey Kong Jr., that was crazy. I'm sure they'll toss in Rosalina.
At long last, Waluigi is back in his natural element.
The Wii U is hence force the Waa Uigi.
@maukenboost
I never played the original and never knew the game or Shulk till Super Smash Bros. Nobody really knew it tbh. But I'm still deciding if I want to play it on the 3ds.
Hope miis won't ruin online like mario tennis open
Just like what everyone else has said, we definitely need more information than repetitive game play footage and a few new characters (who were already expected to be in the game). I've always been a Mario Tennis fan, so I still have high hoped for this title. It's just going to take more to make me buy this game than mega mushrooms.
I'm pretty much a Mario Tennis person. I have a lot of memories playing this with my mom.
With that said, oddly enough, I'm still not certain about buying this. Mario Tennis Open didn't really interest me as much as previous ones; I played it for a month or two 'till I totally stopped. I want to see more about this game besides new characters and the same gameplay. The Mega Mushrooms aren't very appealing to me as well, so I'd like to see something else.
@IceClimbers Yes! I've been waiting forever for another Mario Strikers! I wish they'd make a new one already.
I still dunno if I want this game. I mean, I was hoping the Chance Shots would be done and gone, but sadly, I guess they're here to stay. The only thing I can hope for is the option to turn them off, but that's seemingly unlikely.
@ShadowLuigi2 I do. It's one of the reasons Power Tennis is my favorite in the series.
Mega Mushrooms are getting tedious.
I can't imagine them trying to sell this for more than $40. I still refuse to buy a Mario Tennis game that doesn't have a single player mode like the old GB games.
@maukenboost
I was planing to get this holiday season with a triforce heroes 3ds so yea pretty excited for the 3ds library this year.
Is the world upside down? Ton of people talking of Waluigi and noone is rejoicing in Daisy apperence? ;_;
No worry Daisy, I'm still here for you! So glad to see you back in a game ^O^
(Althought is again a Mario spin-off, when Nintendo will dare to let you do more? WHEN?!?!).
@LUIGITORNADO
I think it will be a 40 € game in Europe. Maybe less.
@BakaKnight
Maybe we can have a Daisy and Waluigi SMB line amiibo now? DK, Rosalina, Toadette and Spike too! Come on Nintendo!
Needs more characters. I hope they are a generous amount.
Also, they need to show the single player modes.
This game just looks so archaic
Nope, not feeling This Game, Not at all!
i really want to like this, i really do, but the characters and same courts of different colors does not consider a buy for me. im sorry Nintendo, this just doesn't/ heck even the Amiibo Festival looks more interesting then this. (and that's saying something)
Mario tennis should be fun but hopefully its gota good story, challenge modes and online play modes too give the game more depth and just bare bones.
I hope this plays like Wii Sports Club tennis and actually has people to play against online.
It's nice to see a little more of this game, even though we didn't get much out of this short trailer. The game looks great graphically, and it's nice to see some of the courts being shown off.
I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of the mega mushroom mechanic yet, it doesn't seem nearly as interesting as the power shot mechanic in Mario Power Tennis. It was also a little disappointing that we didn't get any newcomers revealed... or Shy Guy... really waiting on Shy Guy to pop up.
Still looking forward to this game, although I'm really wishing for more info on it to pop up soon.
@Viagro
"This game just looks so archaic"
how to take screenshots
@rjejr Going by the final box art (that Amazon UK has up) it does NOT have an amiibo logo on it so it looks like that won't be happening.
Oh right, this exists, I forgot
I love Mario Tennis
I love Waluigi
Will buy
New Play Control Mario Power Tennis was absolute garbage with the horrible motion controls. I am glad the main control style is traditional for this game. Mario Power Tennis for the Gamecube is the best one follwed by the N64 one, but here's hoping this one turns out to be the best!
I'll buy the game, just not at launch.
$49.99 in the U.S. seems a bit expensive for a simple Mario Tennis game. I was expecting it to be $39.99 like Toad Treasure Tracker...
...i expect the game to have a big selection of Mario characters...it looks nice but im still not convinced to buy it...when my family gets together we play Game and Wario or Nintendo Land...i hope they show more of this game as we near the release date but for now im good
@LunaticPandora "it does NOT have an amiibo logo on it so it looks like that won't be happening."
Neither does Captain Toad Treasure Tracker:
or Mario Kart 8:
or Super Smash Bros for Wii U:
or Splatoon:
@rjejr I actually prefer the Directs of the Treehouse events but maybe that's just me.
I'm not really excited about this game and I highly doubt that my family will pick this up. In my opinion, the only good Mario sport series is golf. The baseball series is okay and I don't like the strikers series at all. I'll stick with Kart racing!
@dkxcalibur "I actually prefer the Directs of the Treehouse events but maybe that's just me."
Well ND are always going to be better than THL b/c yo never know what you are going to get in an ND - new games, new toys, price cuts, Muppets, fruit, anything. THL is almost always focused on 1 game so you know what you are getting.
I think for this 1 game though a Live Treehouse event would suffice. It's Mario Tennis, not Super Mario Galaxy 3.
I also think over the years NDs have a lot of built in suspense, like Christmas, we've been trained to get excited whenever 1 is announced, like Pavlov's dogs. If they did away w/ ND and started promoting the Treehouse people would start getting excited about those. I can't imagine anybody gets excited over those pre-recorded "Nintendo Minutes" either.

Waluigi is the number one!
However, if this game has no online-mode then I won't buy it. Online is a must for a multiplayer game like this. It's 2015.
From what I've seen, the game looks incredibly barren and the Mega Mushroom mode looks like garbage. Oh, and where's Mario Golf Wii U?
Comes out next month and Nintendo still hasn't released much info about the game. Come on Nintendo....
@JaxonH huh? archaic? 'very old or old-fashioned'?
@Viagro
Everything is "archaic" nowadays it seems. It's the single most abused word in gaming next to "gimmick".
I think it's time we find a new word to smack around and abuse to hell's end.
*** I was just pokin fun at how quick people are to throw that word around for everything nowadays. Don't take me too seriously- just a lighthearted jab
@JaxonH Haha - sorry I don't recall anyone using it (but I don't go on forums etc. much). The new Mario Tennis definitely appears, at least to me, a very uninspiring game. This conversation is making me want to get the GBC game out of the cupboard though, so something good has come from my moan
@Viagro
Ya, it's about what you'd expect for a Mario Tennis game.
Personally though, I'm just happy seeing staple franchises playable on an HD system. Nintendo waited so long to make the jump, we have yet to play a Mario Tennis in HD.
Next generation this probably won't fly. Once HD has already been done, they're probably gonna have to spice it up a little.
But for now, I'm content just seeing these games playable in HD for the first time. After all, the best looking Mario Tennis game I've played was on the Wii, which isn't saying much.
I do wish they'd implemented motion controls as an option though.... [sigh...] oh well
@Mario_maniac I'd love to see Stanley the Bugman make a grand return as well!
Nintendo, please, please, PLEASE make Daisy and Waluigi Amiibos to go with this title and Mario Party!!!
