After last week's revolutionary news of a third-party franchise breaking its way into the world of amiibo, some more details on the Shovel Knight figure have surfaced via Yacht Club Games.
In an interview with Destructoid at PAX Prime 2015, studio head Sean Velasco stated that Yacht Club is responsible for all development decisions regarding the amiibo, and that Nintendo is only licensing its technology and is not involved with producing the figure:
We're basically licensing the amiibo technology from Nintendo, and they've been overseeing it every step of the way, from the design, to how the amiibo functions in the game, to making sure that it was all just perfect in every way. But we're the ones that are dealing with the manufacturing and distribution, we're the ones that are talking with the toy and sculpture people. Even things like the packaging.
He also goes on to state that the figure will be manufactured in the same factory that produces figures for Disney Infinity - a direct competitor of the amiibo range.

The more I think about it the more I realize that Amiibo's (at least now) are a kick at developers to bring games over to 3DS and Wii U. Here you have a product that has an established base that wants these products, you make a decent game and it does well, you can make a third party Amiibo, effectively allowing the dev to dip again with the product they made.
Well I'm glad that nintendo is not handleing it. Hopefully, Yacht club can handle this better since it's only one figure.
looks good
I wonder if there will be Steam World Highest Amiibo now? As they seamed interested in the Idea in a Interview

I Defiantly Want one of these Shovel Knight Amiibo though even if i don't have the Game Just yet lol..
Wonder if they'll be able to manufacture enough Shovel Knight amiibo to have plenty in stock? If it were solely up to Nintendo, you'd probably only be able to get one by spending your entire life's savings via the black market just for a used one. Or who knows, given Yacht Club Games' lack of experience in the toys-to-life market, this could be the rarest of all.
Interesting. This has actually made me lose hope of getting my hands on one as I doubt that Yacht Club Games would have sufficient resources to appease everyone with this amiibo.
But then they are issuing a massive multi-platform physical release of their flagship (only?) title, so I don't know. All the best to them though.
Jeez. There's been a restock in the past two months. Look it up from Amazon Spain and Germany. They have most of the rare ones. I'm sure some US retailers too. Either you're just here to complain or you're not making a little effort to get one. Use the internet to search for these restocks instead using it to complain.
The amiibo situation isn't like the first 6 months of 2015 anymore. At least here in Europe. I actually cancelled my upcoming preorders and will just buy them in stores and pick those without imperfections.
Regarding Shovel Knight, I wonder if they could meet the initial demand since this is a multiplatform figure. I expect some shortage at launch.
@Not_Soos Both GAME and Amazon are taking Shovel Knight amiibo pre-orders, and it's apparently a top seller on Amazon.
These pre-order figures will most likely be taken into account when manufacturing an initial batch.
Although Yacht Club Games' are inexperienced in this field, they have the support of Nintendo and the same manufacturing plant as Disney Infinity, they are capable devs working with capable companies.
"He also goes on to state that the figure will be manufactured in the same factory that produces figures for Disney Infinity - a direct competitor of the amiibo range."
As if that concerns Nintendo. Nintendo just seem to care that quality is maintained to make sure their amiibo brand isn't tarnished by a substandard product. Yacht club have to pay the manufacturer so it's only fair that they select the manufacturer that suits their needs/budget.
All the same It's interesting that an Indie dev became the first to license amiibo tech. Perhaps if Nintendo's banner men hadn't betrayed them during the playstation era there would be amiibo based on square, capcom or konami franchises being the first third party amiibo. Ah well.
License the technology? From the look of it, and knowing it's produced in the same factory as the DI toys, I wonder if these will be hand painted or just be manufactured with different color matetials? Are the DI toys hand painted? Some of the first Gen like the Pirates looked really good but Hulk and Venom look solid.
Oh well, guess will see what the stock situation is.
Neat. Surprised Nintendo would give out so much control.
Okay! Let's just hope that Yacht Club can keep a good amount of stock.
Interesting that a smaller (indie?) dev like Yatch Club is doing this. I personally think games with an NFC component have massive untapped potential way beyond what amiibo currently offers.
My concern as before, is that there are now a confusing array of amiibo's and matrix of compatibility with various games. I understand the collectors aspect of it, but for people like me who didn't grow up with Nintendo and who aren't collectors, amiibo's just come across as over complicated.
I'd rather that there were fewer amiibo's (like 10 or something) but that each one worked with every Nintendo game and some 3rd party games, and did something more interesting than just unlocking extra skins
Interesting. I wonder how this will pan out with other indie Amiibo then. On the one hand if any indie dev can license out the Amiibo tech then that opens it out a lot more, but on the flip side if the devs are responsible for manufacturing and distribution that's a rather expensive obstacle for most. I suppose that makes sense though from Nintendo's perspective, it gives all devs the freedom to play with it but at the same time restricts it to those who are genuinely serious about doing it properly.
I fully expect Amiibo stretch goals on kickstarters of the future now
Personally, I am expecting shortages. A small indie company having the resources to meet demands... This will be something I'll need to see before I can believe. Nintendo can't even meet it but they probably do that purposely.
@Splatburst "I actually cancelled my upcoming preorders and will just buy them in stores and pick those without imperfections."
I've been doing that since the very beginning and I've gotten every single amiibo I want just by walking in a store.
Even though I like the default blue best, I'm so used to seeing him in that red armor from the game this almost looks wrong now.
Definitely getting this if I can. Co op is always welcome in my house. The Splatoon developers should learn from these guys. Local multiplayer is my personal favorite kind of mode
Hopefully it won't sell out too quickly... What's the word on pre-orders in America?
Well, not trying to throw shade or anything, but the figurine looks a lot like disney infinity ones, and like skylanders (compared to amiibos) the amount of details is like 10-99.. they all have about 5 diferent colors, and the most detailed parts are the eyes in most cases... take the splatoon amiibo.. they have the ink container in the back, even the tshirt has writing on the back.. u can barely see it really, but its there, the shoe laces... all those little details.. people complain about stock, it sucks really.. but if u compare all the "toys to life" figurines, I can see why it takes longer to produce amiibos..(thats only one reason), Im not saying the only one...
@Not_Soos they are working with the same company who makes the Disney infinity line so lack of experience isn't a factor
@ikki5 I think the physical copy's of the game are going to be a bigger issue. 4 platforms in multiple regions. You can send an amiibo anywhere
Disney Infinity figures are generally easy to find. Maybe this won't be so bad after all.
Still don't know why I would want any of these. Just like the second screen, they've so far failed to make an even halfway decent case for Amiboo. They're just collector's figures with some minor in-game trinkets. But hey, collect away.
Will be Best Buy Exclusive, lol
Oh boy. Another crappy Happy Meal toy hiding equally crappy paywall DLC that stupid and easily led people want for some bizarrely stupid reason.
great.
forgive me if my withhold my enthusiasm.

@DarthNocturnal
It's still pretty lame in the US too. Target is the only store ive seen to get re stocks and it was only their exclusives. Amazon gets some but they sell out quickly and only over priced ones are left. There's still a bunch I've been looking for and haven't been able to get.
@FreakFerrett The splatoon amiibo have a crazy amount of detail (they all do really), it is pretty cool.
Neat, hopefully more devs will do this
@night apparently you have never held a McDonald's toy or an amiibo
@night immature dude
I really hope 3rd parties jump on this. This could be similar to the exclusive AC mission on sony consoles. Honestly at this point the question is why should i buy this game on your particular brand of box as opposed to another? I think amiibo (and hardware in line with the others so the devs can keep being lazy) could be a possible answer to that question.
I imagine this will make it incredibly rare then. Good luck getting one.
That's cool. It's so weird seeing a indie studio raising up the rank to the point they are handling amiibo. I don't think even Capcom, Namco Bandai, or Sega handled it to that extent with their amiibo characters. Way to stand out and get recognized in the indie world.
Hopefully the average joe and clueless internet wouldn't view it as Nintendo's doing and management regardless of the info at hand.
@Dpishere @MetalFace the whole point of them handling it themselves and working with the Disney infinity manufacturers is so you will have no problems getting it. Otherwise they would have gone through Nintendo. Why don't you get that
@Splatburst The funny part about that is last friday, certain users complain about the amiibo storage and the limited Splatoon 3-pack, while at the same time target was having a restock online of the hard to find ones (including the Splatoon 3-pack), their store exclusives, and preorders of the 9/11 release.
Some just love to complain instead of just play.
@manu0 Me and my friends only buy Amiibos in stores so we can pick out the most deformed ones.
I don't care much for shovel knight but this gives me hope for a Yooka Laylee amiibo.
