Fast Racing NEO is one of the hottest titles in the Wii U 'Nindies' section at EGX, which is currently taking place at the NEC in Birmingham in the UK. It's the largest expo of its kind in the country, and the Shin'en Multimedia title is getting plenty of attention.
We've spent plenty of time with Martin Sauter, the Art Director on the project, to talk about the title and to also go hands on with the game. We'll be sharing a full interview feature and videos very soon, but we did get into details on a new Hero Mode coming to the title. It's going to be an unlockable available after some progress in the speed classes in the campaign, and is designed to offer a substantial challenge. Sauter told us the following.
- It's designed to pose a big challenge for experienced players
- A key mechanic is switched up with the boost energy meter also functioning as a shield mode
- Must finish first in the race to unlock the next
The boost gauge, which in normal modes simply charges for that extra charge of speed, will be tied to the craft's shield. Though this title very much has its own identity, Sauter acknowledged the similarity to F-Zero. He said the difficulty means that progressing all the way through will suit "F-Zero-starved players", saying the mode is "pretty close to F-Zero".
Are you excited about this mode? Let us know, and keep your eyes peeled for much more on the game here on Nintendo Life.

Anything F-Zero-Like is good. Can´t wait for these title. Can we have a release date already???
This is great news for us F Zero fans! I can't wait to get my hands on this game.
I hope everyone buys this so Nintendo can finally realize people want another F-Zero.
I wasn't a big fan of Fast Racing League, but I'm looking forward to this game.
Ok this new Hero-mode does indeed sound like F-Zero. I'm excited for the whole game, but this mode surely is a nice addition!
@rferrari24: I haven't played Fast Racing League, but at least the developer said in an interview that they started from scratch for Fast Racing Neo. It seemed as if he wanted to distinguish the new title from the old one. I hope this means it turns out to be a better game than its predecessor.
Yes please, give it to me now!
Ah man, my dreams are coming true before my very eyes
I WANT THIS GAME. NOW
I'm happy this guy acknowledges us thirsty F-Zero fans. Not a fan of the whole must get in first to progress thing, but it makes sense and anything that's more F-Zero is very welcome!
@shani
Awesome. The game looks great and I'm sure the developers have learned a lot from the previous game. I got stuck in Fast Racing League because all the CPU players had cars with higher top speed.
Everytime there is news about the game I'm getting more excited. And with Shin'ens track record I was alread sold form the get go.
I really hope for them that the game is going to be a sucess and they gain more recognition. They well deserve it.
I haven't played much F-Zero (I've only played the original on the WiiU VC and the GBA one on the 3DS) but I will definitely play this.
@Captain_Gonru Yeah I'ld like to know that, too.
Although, judging from this interview, it has to be soon:
http://www.nintendo.co.uk/News/2015/September/Nintendo-eShop-developer-discussion-FAST-Racing-Neo-with-Shin-en-1052333.html
Because the intro text says "With its release fast approaching".
Enough hype. Now you're just trolling us with all this awesomeness
I'm not excited for this mode—I'M EXCITED FOR THE WHOLE GAME!
Every WiiU owner MUST support this game!! those guys are even challenging Nintendo in their own console!! I mean... LOOK AT THOSE GRAPHICS!!
@shigulicious
I agree! It's just plain cruel at this point!
😬
Must buy this day one.
A Definite day one purchase at the Wii U eShop!
A Definite day one purchase at the Wii U eShop!
Looks great. Hope the best for them. And still waiting Nanostray 3
This looks amazing. Can't wait.
With the quality of this and Shin'en's past work, with the developer's Nintendo exclusivity, and with how much Nintendo is promoting this thing, I can't understand why Nintendo hasn't just given them the license to make this an F-Zero game. They wouldn't lose any money on it or have to waste time making an F-Zero "no one wants" because they can't think of anything "new for the series."
Everybody wins.
Looks... generic. Like an HD Wipeout. I'm happy that you lot are happy though. I think they noticed all the F-Zero related buzz and thought they'd shoehorn a similar mode in for the press.
for the love of all gaming give this game to me now, i just want to rub myself in it for god sake
Forget F-Zero. It reminds me of Star Wars: Episode I: Racer. Bring it on!
@Moon Now that you mention it it really does look like an HD Wipeout than F-Zero, but not in a bad way though.
Boost meter as Shield as well? Let me know when I need to rush out to buy a Captain Falcon amiibo.
@Chaoz
Can't really see the comparison. Wipeout is much slower than this with way narrower tracks. It was essentially a futuristic Mario Kart, rather than a high speed racer.
This may not have quite as much speed as an FZero game or have tracks that are as crazy as GX, but this closer to FZero than Wipeout.
Its probably 15 bucks on eShop, but i would pay 30 for a retail version.
Now just add a crafts' editor and it's done!
Looks like a lot of Extreme G influence as well, which is a great thing imo
Will this game come to Wii U or to the NX?
EDIT: sorry for the stupid question. Now I see it mentions Wii U. Very nice.
The Wii predecessor was too difficult for me. I wish all courses would be unlocked from the beginning for multiplayer.Otherwise incredible game!
These guys make stunning looking games. Should get them on sprucing up Star Fox
this guys deserve all the best, they always deliver and they just make great freaking games! I still play nano assault neo regurlaly on my Wii U, this will be the same,
even though I also think, why not just give them the licenses to make a great F-Zero game, even a StarFox 3d shooter type of game, every gen for nintendo consoles, at this point, just let them make they're own games, they always show great support for Nintendo and deliver GREAT looking and playing experiences, they did the same with Fast racing on the original wii, no point in crying that it should be F.zero, looking very forward to buying this one!
Complete with an incredibly cheesy character theme end credits song, I hope.
@XCWarrior : me too!! Let's hope it plays as well!
R-E-L-E-A-S-E D-A-T-E ?!?!?
I really hope this game lives up to the hype. It certainly looks the part and the devs are talking the talk, but essentially it's just trading on the populatity of F-Zero at this point.
Fingers crossed for some good review scores.
Can hardly wait to play this, sounds better each time there's an update!
And judging from the released footage, you can switch phase without using an energy orb, which together with some way to narrow tracks and those iced turns, was my only gripe with Fast Racing League on the Wii.
I'm beginning to think that this game is just a myth- or it will be released on the NX in 2017.......
Cannot wait for this game it looks fantastic
Looks really cool and will definitely be purchasing day one, but if faces some stiff competition over Christmas anyone seen trackmania turbo on xbone/ps4.....Awesome.
I played the game at EGX on Friday. Such a wonderful experience even in the easy modes, certainly a day one purchase for me. The boost and orb mechanic is a great addition. Graphics are awesome, as is the music and of course gameplay.
@AndyCarolan Hey Andy, thanks for your kind words.
Is there a confirmed price for this title?
