We don't yet know what's next for Donkey Kong and his many relations, but we can certainly celebrate the mascot's diverse history to date. From transforming the fortunes of Nintendo's video game business with the self-titled arcade cabinet, to dazzling in the Rare and then recent Retro Studios days, with plenty of games in between, it's a franchise loved by many.
Fans of DK and co. may like the latest video from The Game Theorists, in that case, as it provides a brief history of the IP to date. It's a fun watch, throwing in album art from release dates and touching upon some of the quirky weirdness that the franchise has seen in its illustrious history.
Check it out below and let us know what you think.

I just want to say dkc is overated. :[
I think DK might just be my favorite Nintendo franchise (sorry, Zelda and EarthBound/Mother). Well, the DKC franchise at least. Always nice to see stuff like this.
DKC is awesome!
Wait...the cartoon only gets a mention!? But...it has memes! And has coconut cream pies!
@TripleGamer3K And I just want to tell you that you are completely wrong.
@night Well, I do like to respect people's opinions, buuuut... amen to that, brother.
@TripleGamer3K yeah, cause challenging gameplay, great atmosphere, wonderful music and great level design is all the recipe for overrated games
Too bad Donkey Kong is played out by now
@Ananymoose All Donkey Kong games are the complete opposite of that lol
@ZurrrrBlattTron haha, that's the best joke I've heard in a long tine
I'm not a big fan of Donkey Kong but Tropical Freeze blew me away. Incredible game. Incredibly overlooked.
Man, I sure love the DKC series. In all honesty, I like it a little better than the 2D Mario games. Tropical Freeze is one of the best platformers of all time.
i like the DK games more than any of the Mario-games, but i guess that's just me...
@TripleGamer3K
Let me explain you why the Donkey Kong Country series is so loved. It has a gameplay particularity that makes it very unique: the roll.
Rolling allow you to increase your speed and the amplitude of your jump. And the animation of the roll can be cancelled by a jump at any moment anywhere, even if you don't touch the ground.
Of course the game has other qualities such as the beautiful soundtracks and sets but this gameplay mechanic, which is basically a risk and reward system, is what make the DKC a unique series loved by platformers veterans. Because it give them the freedom to play in a very challenging manner.
Pixels
ew, Game Theory.
Donkey Kong is one of my absolute favorite characters to beat up in Super Smash Bros Wii U BY FAR. That is one of the most important things I'll remember about him, besides the amazing Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong 64 that is.
The speaker in the video was incorrect about the 28th of November in the year 1994 being the date of the initial release of the first Donkey Kong game; it was actually on the 21st of that month for that year.
The original DK arcade is still my favorite game of all time.
@bitleman Except for the fact that his jump is a variation of his roll, Sonic did that first, so it's not unique.
I can understand why people like the series, but I personally find the DKC games to be too difficult, and I don't think the characters react quickly enough to ideally handle tricky platforming with the same precision that Mario and Sonic do. As for the original arcade games, Jumpman is even more sluggish than DK in DKC, and DK Jr. can't jump from the vines and ridiculously can't fall more than a foot without dying.
