Earlier this week we shared the exciting news around the major Super Smash Bros. update, due on both the Wii U and 3DS versions. Set for 31st July (which it is at the time of writing in Europe and Japan, for example) it's now gone live in both versions of the game.
It's a fairly meaty update, taking over five minutes to download on our Wii U with a fast connection and taking up a hefty 3383 blocks on our UK 3DS (it seems to be smaller for some). The Wii U detected the update automatically when we loaded the game, though with the 3DS version we had to prompt it by trying to access the in-game DLC store.
As previously reported, this update adds Tourneys and YouTube uploads to the Wii U version of the game. Both versions have new DLC, meanwhile, with the following available:
- Samus's Armour Mii Outfit - $0.75 / £0.69 single, $1.15 / £1.09 for both
- Lloyd Set Mii Outfit - $0.75 / £0.69 single, $1.15 / £1.09 for both
- Black Knight Mii Outfit - $0.75 / £0.69 single, $1.15 / £1.09 for both
- Chrom Mii Outfit - $0.75 / £0.69 single, $1.15 / £1.09 for both
- Flying Man Mii Outfit - $0.75 / £0.69 single, $1.15 / £1.09 for both
- King K. Rool Mii Outfit - $0.75 / £0.69 single, $1.15 / £1.09 for both
- Bear Suit Mii Outfit - $0.75 / £0.69 single, $1.15 / £1.09 for both
- Hoodie Mii Outfit - $0.75 / £0.69 single, $1.15 / £1.09 for both
- Hyrule Castle (64) Stage - $1.99 / £1.79 single, $2.99 / £2.69 for both
- Peach's Castle (64) Stage - $1.99 / £1.79 single, $2.99 / £2.69 for both
- Mii Fighter Costume Bundle - $6 / £5.52 single, $9.20 / £8.72 for both
- Bundle Collection 3 (all outfits plus both stages) - $9.98 / £9.10 single, $15.18 / £14.10 for both
In addition we received a K.K. Slider Mii outfit as a freebie in our copies.
Of course, YouTube uploads and Tourneys are a hot attraction. Our initial attempts to access the Tourneys were met by a network maintenance message, though as the update's just recently gone live (at the time of writing) some patience is advised. We're planning to setup and run some community Tourneys on Nintendo Life as soon as we've been able to check out the available options and features in the mode.
Let us know how you get on with the update!

Yeah, it's out here in America as well.
I want that Flying Man costume! But I don't use any of the Mii Fighters... what do?!
Was hoping for the new character to be announced from the smash ballot! But none the less this is very welcomed! Glad to see it being supported. Who is everyone voting for? My vote went to Skull Kid
Getting everything on both versions.
No Dr Mario stage....i cri evrtim
Yep, thanks all, took out the 'UK' bit at the end. Planning to do some awesome community Tourney stuff this weekend once it kicks in, so stay tuned
@Undead_terror For all we know, it just isn't in this pack and will come later...hopefully...
Edit: Nevermind...nevermind.

Ohhhhhhhhh snaaaaaaaap! quickly umplugged Wii U
The replays will be fine, right? Just making sure. I hope so.
Dang. I had the mindset that the update would come tomorrow in NA. It's a great thing I got an eShop card less than two hours ago. Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to NL tournaments! Sounds like a lot of fun to play against other members.
Get ready for an overloaded server on the eShop and long wait times.
Screw the Mii Fighter costumes, I want alternate costumes for the regular cast. Why the Miis are getting all the attention in this department is beyond me.
That said though, I'm excited for the other features this update brings! Tourney Mode is finally back.
@ThomasBW84 OOOOOOOOOOO I'm definitely joining the tournament. I should work on my falcon online since his grab feels weird online...
What's the price per stage? I can't go on now. Also how about the price of the bundle?
Looking forward to the various buffs and nerfs. There's definitely some as people are reporting that replays are broken. And some guy said that Fox's ''infinite'' two-hit jab is gone.
Also, wow, I really wasn't expecting a Mii costume for Lloyd. I doubt I'll get it, but it makes me happy. Now I'm not totally sure anymore if his becoming a playable character for Smash is impossible.
Wait, is K.K Slider available to everyone for free? Even on the 3DS?
Prepare for my highly chaotic tourney. lol
Ok all, I've added prices and an awesome trailer. It's after 3am here, I'm going to bed!
(Refresh the page if you can't see the update)
@TheGreatLord Prices added
downloading...
What an awesome update! This will keep the game fresh and fun to play over the next several weeks of summer.
Geez, I have some DLC to catch up on!
Are there local tournaments?
Very nice update!!! Wish we were getting Tourneys on the 3DS, but considering that the game will (probably) explode if anything else is added to the game, I can understand....just means I need to fire up my Wii U and play some good old fashioned tourneys!
@TheGreatLord Each stage costs £1.79 or £2.69 for Wii u and 3ds.
Don't care for Mii costumes at all, but I'm all for new (past) stages.
sob sob. Poor K Rool. Wait! FLYING MAN? That one could be pretty awesome with the right mii.
Yeah!
Looking forward to those NLife tourneys... I'm not that good like GOOD, though! Cut me some slack!
Getting that Chrom outfit and the Hyrule Castle stage with the last of my eShop cash! Woohoo!
When people were talking about Lloyd being in, I thought they were talking about the EarthBound Beginnings Lloyd. but I have no idea who this Lloyd is.
Just played my first tournament there and got royally pumped in the 2nd round by Wario from Denmark.
Was messing around w/ NF and after turning of fmy Wii U the HDD was going strong for abt another 15 minutes. Seein gas how it was after 10 I figured i tmight be this. I'm too tired tonight to find out though, well see in th emorning.
This is cool! I just wish there were local tournaments.
Am I the only one who doesn't care for K Rool?
However it would still be nice to see the entire DK roster become playable, including some of the villains from each game (not sure about Returns though, although TF had some great villains).
YouTube replays are only a max of 3 minutes. Thanks for nothing.
@sWiTcHeRoO I pretty much feel the same. Really the only matches you can post to YouTube are ones you manipulate to be under 3 minutes. Most great Smash matches are over three minutes. To me, the YouTube feature should have a 10 minute limit, and a highlight reel option. Why is the YouTube feature more basic in Smash than in Mario Kart?
I guess we aren't getting a new dlc fighter this time, but who knows maybe they'll side it in til the end of the direct.
How do you spectate a regular tourney? Also, Nintendo being Nintendo. Cant create bracket tourneys, have to join pre made ones. Also, cant create 1v1 tourneys. Either that or i justdont see how
Once again im going in ~
Look for me Gameday_J
not using smash again tell I can at least get some of the DLC pack 2...
Just got the stages and the Black Knight costume. I only really like the Mii costumes if they're a convincing recreation of the character. King K. Rool is my favourite, but the goofy Mii face just kills it for me.
Good to see more DLC content for 3DS games nowadays.
Awesome. I'm looking forward to buying those stages and smashing you all in some Tournyes
There's local tourneys, right?
Samus' power suit is a redundant choice for a costume. Why not a GF Trooper suit instead?
Too creative I know.
@MasterBombad
Would have been especially advisable in light of Federation Force.
Well. I'll definitely be back on playing these next few days. Add me if you want to Smash.
@SeepMan Lloyd is from the much beloved Tales of Symphonia. Lots of people really love that game! Tried it myself and couldn't get too into it, but I understand.
@Yosher I've always said one of the biggest improvements this game could easily implement is adding in some really great alt. costumes for regular Fighters. So many missed opportunities. I'd pay like $10-15 for a bundle of 1 or 2 new alts for each fighter.
Wow already getting into stupid lobbies where kids are trying to double team me and its a ffa, i can see people are gonna be cheating in the privately started tourneys. I wish you could see the matches that you didnt take place in, then i promise youll end up seeing some bs take place.
Black Knight costume you say?! I may just go for that...
$12: 16 Great Mario Kart Stages, and 6 characters
$10: A bunch costumes with no gameplay value and two old levels...
Am I the only one who's confused? No? Everyone will buy this Capcom-style DLC with glee? Arlight then...
@Gameday You can save the replay IIRC. Other people can also see the replay of the others in the same tourney?
@R_Champ 16 great stages? Im sorry, Ice Ice Outpost was not great, Mostly people only buy the stages because they actually provide more gameplay value.
Not exactly one for the mii costumes but to all you who enjoy them have fun! I'm personally just getting the stages only for the gameplay and fun!
@R_Champ You are not the only one. The only DLC i got was Mewtwo.
@MyLegGuy I can only find the Tournament option under the online section. Unless I overlooked it, I'd say its online only unfortunately
@R_Champ
The stages should be free with the update.
Bad Nintendo...
Id like to point out that Mewtwo, Roy, Lucas, and Ryu are now listed in a 'character bundle #1' item on the eshop. This could imply that 4 more characters are on the way for a second bundle.
KK costume is a weird random freebie but okay!
They're going a bit overboard with Mii costumes, it's a bit frustrating when Miis are only three playable characters out of an entire roster of character which could have special alternate outfits.
@R_Champ Remixing songs to be added to them highly requested stages ain't free.
NintendoLife don't keep up their Tourneys so I'll pass.
Slightly related, but with the last set of DLC released I bought Ryu and Lucas, but because my 3DS didn't have enough space on it for the update, let alone the DLC, I only got the Wii U version thinking that when I later had the money to get a larger SD card (in fact I eventually got a New 3DS XL and a 16GB micro SD card) I'd be able to upgrade for the remainder of the bundle price. But now when I go on my 3DS I can either pay for the 3DS version on it's own, or the full bundle price. I assumed because of having a linked Nintendo Network account on both systems, it would see that I already bought the WiiU version and offer me the bundle price for the remainder. Kind of like the eshop does for Virtual Console titles I already have on the Wii. Anyone know any way around this? Should I try contacting Nintendo??
I updated my PC to Windows 10, and it's free! Why do I have to pay for all these extras?
I'll glady bite everything exept the Mii costumes.
@Hachiko The Wii U screen has 6 more slots left before the screen is full up.
The update and purchase process continues to be unbelievably archaic:
Fired up Smash on 3DS. No update mentioned, so knowing the trick, I go to an online match. Warning message that I need to update before going online. Takes me to the Smash section of the eShop where I can opt to download the update. Downloads and takes me back to the game where I can now go back through the menus to the eShop again to buy the 3DS/Wii U bundle. 3DS stuff starts downloading, leaving me to go find the Wii U code by myself buried deep in my account receipts in the eShop menus at the very bottom of the receipt. Doesn't tell me how to find that mind you, I'm just magically supposed to know.
Meanwhile, fire up Smash on the Wii U. No mention of an update. Go online. Tells me an update is available but this time, unlike the 3DS, I have to quit the game and restart it to update rather than going to the eShop, which I dutifully do. Back through the menus to the eShop Smash section, but no code entry screen. For that I have to know to go back to the eShop home screen and enter it there. Once downloaded I have to quit the game yet again and restart.
It's 2015, right?
Between DLC and amiibo, Smash has quickly become far too expensive. But it's because it's one game they can get away with it.
Unfortunately there's no offline tourney mode, which is what my friends and I wanted, like in brawl. This was practically pointless to us.
@Shinnos Don't worry about calling Nintendo! Check the digital receipt you received for purchasing DLC on WiiU for both games, the code for the 3DS content is printed at the bottom.
I refuse to play this game ever again until Nintendo can prove to me that it can go one match w/o severe lag happening.
I like the 3 minute limit. Hyrule castle is a god send for 3ds. I love the 3ds version, and not there is a decent sized stage I enjoy. I am happy!
@Surlent But I only purchased the Wii U characters at the time, because I mistakenly thought I could pay the remainder of the bundle price later to get the 3ds versions.
I will JOIN those Nintendolife tourneys of yours!
Also Lloooooooooooyd costume! 8D
Haven't gotten any of it yet, but I'll be getting the two stages, and maybe the K Rool and Flying Man costumes.
I always love battling in new stages, so I'll buy the N64 ones. Tourneys are also very enjoyable.
Pretty cool additions for sure! Odd there is no local tournaments though. I play local all the time. Online not so much.
Already had some fun with what there is this morning.

The amiibo should unlock the corresponding Mii fighter outfit like they do in MK8. Just another little perk of owning the amiibo
Too bad the smash bros updates are so large for the 3DS. Takes up so much storage...had to delete it Loved it tho.
@R_Champ I'm not confused, the "free" update is actually just advertising for all the stuff that isn't free. YouTube video w/ 3 minute limits, no offline tourneys, no online 1 v 1 tourneys, but plenty of stuff to pay for.
Edit: AFTER the update there were 4 pages of DLC on the Wii U eShop.
Next time anybody favorably compares Nintendo to any other company milking DLC "SSB" is the only reply neccassary. I wonder how long before we can spend more on DLC than the actual game? And people say free-to-start is a rip-off, at least it isn't $60 to start.
I'm glad Nintendo is making money and supporting the game, it's the holier than though attitude of some of its fans that irks me. Business is business. Free update, why not spend $10 on DLC while you're getting it.
@Nintendian Win 10 isn't free, you have to trade your soul for it, they read all your email, open up your WiFi password to everyone, copy all your documents and data mine them for advertising info. Google Win 10 privacy, you'll be surprised what Microsoft is taking from you, basically everything.
Oh, if you meant that as a joke, try or /sarcasm at the end next time.
@rjejr I like your comment.
Damn this DLC is obscenely expensive. The DLC released thus far has nearly surpassed the cost of the base game and for what? 4 new fighters, a few new stages and Mii costumes that almost nobody will use. And let's not talk about the added cost of some 50 or so amiibo...
@sillygostly Or you could just pay 75 cents for the item you actually want on one system.
@Varathius I had 110 games on my 3DS and barely had 1/3 of the memory card full. What on earth are you using?!
I'm not buying any of it.
The N64 stages should be free, and I'm tired of Mii costumes. I don't even use Mii in Smash.
Character alts would be a whole lot better.
Getting the stages cause I love new stages :
The tournament mode truly does leave much to be desired. Basically tourney mode should be "Regular Tourneys" created by users. It's not that the other modes are horrible but without the ability to create Regular bracket based elimination tournaments this update is always going to be remembered for what you can't do. I don't know what goes on in those dev meetings. "Nah, people don't want to create regular tourneys. They'd rather wait 30 minutes for a Nintendo made tourney to start"
I've been buying the complete packs, though I have yet to really utilize the Mii costumes. This bundle, though, I'm super excited to finally be able to play the original Hyrule Castle again! That stage was great back on N64. To a lesser degree Peach's Castle, but I still had some good times on that stage. Take my $ Nintendo.
On a brighter note, when I turned on my Wii U this morning I saw 2 pop-up screens, Data downloaded, and Data installed. Started up the game and no reboots or reinstalls, it just worked. There are a couple of extra screens for the KK Slider gear but thats fine, letting me know stuff I got for free. Much better andeasier than I had anticipated, no trouble at all.
I am in the US w/ auto on so YMMV. My kids haven't updated their 3DS versions yet but those always seem to be a little more work, but Im sure they'll manage.
Really wish they handled DLC like Mario Kart 8. Pack the last two DLC packages into one $12 upgrade.
Looks like I'll be sticking with the base game lolz
@ShanaUnite @R_Champ I'm with both of you. I downloaded Mewtwo DLC only because I got it free from Club Nintendo.
Does anyone know if the automatic update can be turned off for Smash on wii u? Everytime I want to play the game it starts to download the update and I don't want it! (and the last one neither) I'm running out of space on my hard drive and I never play Smash online anyway. I keep having to cancel the download. I don't want to have to turn off my internet every time I want to play Smash.
Well now I've got to update again! I will say I love more stages though, and the Lloyd costume makes me happy. We will probably never get him as a truly playable character (and if we did, people would complain about another sword user), but a lot of the Mii moves are similar to moves from Tales of Symphonia!
@crzysortagamer But watch out for the music
Too many people are whiny, I got all the DLC on both versions and even had to pay extra because of the tax here...but you don't see mii complaining...
I like the tourney theme
@ThomasBW84 you forgot that the replay video should not exceeding 3 minutes to be able to post the replay on youtube
link:http://www.smashbros.com/en-uk/howto/entry14.html
@EmmatheBest yes the KK.Slider costume is also free on the 3DS version
@R_Champ I think you're right. They were off to a great start with their foray into DLC, but this is milking it so bad. I can't justify paying more for DLC than I did the game itself. (There's around £40 of DLC)
I'll be waiting and hoping for a DLC sale, but considering it's Nintendo, I won't hold my breath.
@Shinnos Reading comprehension fail
I get your problem now, that kinda sucks.
I'd make more of an effort to buy these... if they had a left-handed option. Right now, i'm just not interested. :/
Great! Costumes for hardly used characters. And also great for de confirming the characters we want to be playable as seperate characters...Greeeat -.-
How much Mo takes the update on Wii U ?
I'm on holidays with my wii u and no internet connection except the 3g on my phone, so it does matter A LOT
@Mikes All my replays are gone???
Update data is stacked anyway, on top of the main program. If Nintendo tried, they could run old replays with only the applicable update data active. For instance, the Mario Kart 7 & 8 patches didn't kill ghost data. Even my Maka Wuhu MK7 Ghost still worked. But they rather screw over their loyal fans and not be bothered by making replays backwards compatible or even giving users the chance to record them prior to applying the update.
@StarDust4Ever Sadly, yes. I lost every single one of mine. There were so many, too, and I forgot about auto-update. I wasn't even expecting any balance patches this time. I really wish they would have an option like that.
@Gridatttack I think its just the last match played not all the matches over all. Either way this is what im talking about mostly. The Mario guy Seems to know the Rosa player. Notice how he does minimum damage or has limited contact with him the whole round.
Then on top of that another match again with two obvious friends playing as Jig.
14:07 Mario and Rosa / 21:12 The Two Jigs
I do not understand how updating can anyone help ? 😅
