It seems like there's a mod for just about anything in Minecraft. The extremely open ended and modular nature of the core game leaves the door wide open for just about any type of game to be created within it, from platformers to shooters to racers. Granted, there's usually an absurd amount of complicated infrastructure going on in the background, but this just makes it all the more fascinating when one considers that somebody, somewhere, took the time to plan and design everything. Nowhere is this more evident than in a recent mod that just surfaced: a surprisingly accurate version of Splatoon.
First of all, let's not forget that Splatoon has been out for barely a week, but a small group of fans have wasted no time in sharing their passion for Nintendo's new shooter. A Youtuber named Sethbling just posted the video and it makes for quite a fascinating watch. Players have the option of using the Splattershot, Splat Charger, or Splat Roller, which are really just repurposed versions of the egg, bow, or stick, respectively. The game can be played in both first and third person and all the same rules from the original game apply. The goal is still to cover as much ground as possible and you still recharge ink in your own turf, have the option to turn into a squid, and can swim up walls. Here's the video:
What do you think? Does it do a good job of emulating Splatoon? What are some of your favorite Minecraft mods? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

And yet no minecraft for Wii U...
@duddy But we do have Splatoon!
It's a nice demo for those who have Minecraft and not the real Splatoon.
This proves that PC has the technology to do so much,but Nintendo has the ideas to keep reinventing the wheel. Splatoon is probably the first truly original idea in gaming since... well Minecraft.
It looks really fun but the charm of splatoon is that every little spot of ink counts plus its more charming.
I wouldn't be surprised if Splatoon clones start to pop up in a year or two.
Most Minecraft mods are rather lifeless copies, and this one fares no better. It doesn't look fun, and it doesn't look good. But it will probably suffice as a time waster if you're REALLY bored.
I wonder how much longer these types of mods will continue until Microsoft is forced to deal with these mods that infringe on copyrights as blatantly as most Minecraft mods do. I imagine it'll be another SC2 arcade situation.
always amazing to me how they do these things in Minecraft. Cool!
Nice, for a mod it looks very impressive
How long till Nintendo takes down this video and/or Mod for copyright infringement??
It doesn't look anywhere near as fun as the real Splatoon, but I guess that's the limitations of Minecraft. Feels like a poor man's version.
its not a mod its vanilla minecraft...
It still impresses me what people can do with such a simple game, well done.
Also do you think Nintendo will try to shut this down, or at least the name?
I had a go and its really meh
Not to be a jerk, but while Splatoon has only been out a week it was shown off a year ago at E3 and looks and plays now pretty much as it looks like it would then.
Im waiting for the Minecraft mod of Lego Worlds. (My kid bought it yesterday and has played a lot already - oh when will the good June weather come? - but hes back at Minecraft for the mods.)
Think Ill have him give this one a go just to see.
To everybody in a twist about 'copyright' - this is not a mod. This was created in vanilla (unmodded) Minecraft using command blocks and redstone.
Vid looks good, dont understand all the hate above. Sure its not as good, its a Minecraft mod, Splatoon is a $60 game in the US, Minecraft is $27 and does a whole lot more than just this. When somebody starts charging $60 for this mod then Ill complain too.
@rjejr - It's not that it's bad, it's that a lot of the Nintendo fans here are angry that Minecraft isn't on Wii U, and so they do the only thing they know to do when they cant get something; pretend it's bad and that they didn't want it in the first place.
I think I'd rather play the free Minecraft map (not even a mod, even less hassle! ) than pay £40 for the game that locks Day 1 DLC behind toys, personally.
@capnstubing - It's a free map. Microsoft wouldn't be able to do anything about it, because once its out there people can get it so easily.
Guys, it's not a mod, it was done in vanilla minecraft
Never understood the love for minecraft. I tried it on PC and was entertained for an hour but lost interest after.
i must get minecraft as well as splatoon now
It's impressive but it looks like it has no soul XD
@capnstubing I was wondering if Super Soaker will go after nintendo. If the game becomes massively popular into the mainstream, I think there is a good chance of it.
It's not a mod! It's all done within tools given by vanilla minecraft! =P
...makes for an easier to understand title though...
@Geonjaha Wait what? Instead of not just buying the amiibos (like a person that just dislike day 1 DLC would) you don't buy either? Splatoon is still a fun as hell game without the amiibos. Anyway, this really looks like a good Minecraft map.
@Geonjaha That's the concern isn't it. Blizzard faced consistent copyright BS, whether it was justified or otherwise, because of custom maps. That's why they replaced them with the SC2 Arcade, easier to police and such. Even if the game is done with the vanilla version of Minecraft and distributed for free it is still treading on a Nintendo registered trademark. That puts Microsoft at risk and companies typically don't like to leave their neck exposed, but really it's not like I have an investment one way or the other. Just found the topic interesting as it mirrors SC days and I wonder what this means for Minecraft's future let alone MC2. If such a game will ever exist.
@Blastcorp64 Since they're not stamped with the Super Soaker logo anywhere I think they'll be fine.
@FeedingTheWheel Same
@Geonjaha It's not that their spiteful at Minecraft, it's rather that Minecraft can't effectively capture the feel, charisma, and style of the real Splatoon. Splatoon's style and entire atmosphere are one of its main selling points, and Minecraft lacks the ability to mimic that. So its understandable that people would say it's bad in comparison to the original.
To be fair, Splatoon's Amiibo dlc is very minuscule and really has no effect on the game or players.
Excellent work, I'm surprised at how well he was able to capture the essence of the gameplay in Splatoon. It's not a mod though, it's made using vanilla Minecraft.
@MrGawain roblox game says hi.
@Kaze_Memaryu Unfortunately for Nintendo, that's good enough for most people.
@Geonjaha "...it's that a lot of the Nintendo fans here are angry that Minecraft isn't on Wii U, and so they do the only thing they know to do when they cant get something; pretend it's bad and that they didn't want it in the first place."
That's what Sony and MS fans do whenever a new Zelda or Mario game comes out. Troll the crap out of it then when the subject of a third-party Nintendo comes up, they all perk up. It's called sour grapes, and it's a pretty normal function of a person's ego, and it isn't just Nintendo fans. If someone can't have something easily, they act like it isn't very good and justify it any way they can.
@Collinhall Nintendo cares not for laws, Nintendo rules with an iron fist. If Nintendo can squeeze any royalties out of anything they will xD
@IronMan28 You sir, deserve a cookie
@IronMan28 - Yup. It's true for many other companies as well. It just ends up being more pronounced for bigger titles, and with Minecraft only being absent on Nintendo consoles, we unfortunately see it whenever it's mentioned here.
@Chaoz - I won't be buying any Amiibo's, but I'm also not going to buy any game that takes content away from launch to sell as toy-DLC. I dont want to support that practice. I'm looking forward to playing Yoshi's Wooly World though, and the Amiibo functionality there is fully cosmetic iirc. As long as they stick to cosmetic stuff it wont be an issue to me. If they dont, I choose to vote with my wallet; there are always more games to be played anyway.
I love how creative and talented people are. These mods are boring as hell though. It's like asking "Do you love Splatoon, CoD Zombies, and Fallout? Great! Now how would you like them with terrible, blocky, unfitting graphics, horrifically bad controls, dumbed-down gameplay, none of the original atmorspehre, weapons that hardly represent their original counter-parts...." To which I always have to say, no thank you, I actually have the original (good) versions.
Minecraft sucks, all I wanted to say
A poor man's Splatoon...
Impressive work. I'll stick to the actual Splatoon but hats off them for building this
@Geonjaha But honestly, you're not really supporting if you're not going to buy the amiibos. Splatoon sales doesn't include the amiibo sales. Just wait till a price drop comes and buy the game as it is. Splatoon is still good at it own right and you shouldn't brush it off for it's day 1 DLC amiibos. (not like the amiibo missions would be any fun, the single player is probably more fun with the splattershot)
...Eh. I think I'll just stick with the real deal.
I personally have never found any interest in Minecraft but I don't dislike it. I do dislike the idea of exact replication of other games without permission of the original company. I have never really favored with Nintendo as I try to remain unbiased, but I do think it is kind of unfair that their original game is being completely mimicked, which could in turn lead to the original losing business.
I wonder if Nintendo can take legal action as it would seem reasonable that they could, but I am by no means an expert with legal affairs. I would be very happy if someone could inform me whether or not it is possible.
@Geonjaha
Every Nintendo game will have content set aside for toys going forward, not just Splatoon. Fact, Splatoon gives the least amount of Amiibo content of any game to date. If you're going to complain about games that have amiibo content there are far better choices than Splatoon. But.... that's what Amiibo are supposed to do. Can't unlock content if there's no content to unlock.
Day one DLC is only a bad thing when they're selling $90 worth of content on the digital storefront the day the game releases- games like Takes of Hearts R on Vita (over $100 of day one DLC), Evolve (so much I can't even remember the numeric value), The Last of Us, Forza Horizon 2... basically most of the games on PlayStation and Xbox. That's bad "day one DLC". Amiibo are not even in that league. And it's not DLC, it's content developed and set aside for those who purchase Amiibo, which is their entire purpose of existence. Letting you play a pre-existing mission with a pre-existing weapon, just a different weapon that default, and unlocking one little outfit of armor, hardly constitutes the barrage of accusations of " day one DLC" as if you could go on the eShop right now and buy 10 different map packs for $10 a piece.
If this is the worst example people can give of Nintendo doing day one DLC, then I think we're in a very good place with the Wii U
Oh, and this is awesome btw. I love Splatoon- it's one of the freshest (pardon the pun) games I've played in many years and one of the funnest too. It brings me great joy to see Splatoon being latched onto by gaming culture. It certainly deserves it.
@BinaryFragger - Thank you. Too often I get the feeling that everyone here is just used to it and doesn't realise how biased they're being.
@JaxonH - The fallacy that just because it isn't the worst offender in the industry I should ignore it is not one I choose to follow. Locking any content that affects the game behind a paywall on day 1 for a full priced £40 retail game is not a practice I will be supporting. If Nintendo does continue this trend of locking more and more non-cosmetic content behind a paywall on day 1 then I won't be buying it. I choose to support games that don't include this practice, and stand by that principle - as I said before, I'm sure splatoon is a great game, but that's not the point of a boycott, and there will always be more games I can buy instead, from Nintendo or from other companies that don't cut up their game on launch just to support their toy sales.
I understand that Amiibo are supposed to unlock content in games, but as soon as that content stops being cosmetic and starts affecting the game, it gets no support from me. I have a bad feeling that this WILL get worse as time goes on, and I'm hoping this doesn't end up being the reason I stop playing Nintendo games.
@Geonjaha I really don't see the Splatoon amiibos having any affect on the game at all. At most, each unlocks a single costume along with one weapon, and even the weapons the weapons themselves aren't special. Even the challenges are just re-runs of the same ones you had done before, so your not really missing out on anything.
Heres my logic, the amiibos are entirely unnecessary and are there if you want them, they don't provide anyone an unfair advantage, they don't take advantage of those who don't have an amiibo, and the only real disappointment is that you can't have their costume without the amiibo. I understand that you dislike the idea, but I really don't the amiibos have any negative on the game at all. Nintendo tends to be fair about their downloadable content.
@Geonjaha
I'm genuinely baffled that anyone could accuse a grand total of "3 outfits for 3 amiibos", all of which have random skills that any other gear in the game will have, noncosmetic.
It's not that there are worse offenders, this one isn't an offender at all. People who have been saying this about Splatoon obviously don't know what they're talking about. They heard rumor down the grapevine that there are special single player missions that unlocked and the fact of the matter is it was a horse crap lie. There are no missions. You just replay the same ones you already have! You unlock COSMETIC armor that has no better chance of having good skills than any other gear in the game. So....
But even if the game did have more than cosmetic content, who cares? As long as it wasn't removed from the game and was developed in addition to, and everything they've done so far has been developed in addition to, then there is no gripe. Nothing to be upset about or protest.
A lot of these arguments against amiibo content seems so forced and artificially manufactured. If you know the content was not removed from the game then why still act like it's some sort of outrage.
The only reason "day one DLC" got a bad name in the first place is because it was being removed from the game and it was significant content, VERY significant. This is not DLC. It's a completely separate thing entirely. It's content developed's separately for amiibo owners.
I don't know I guess go protest to your hearts content. If 3 total pieces of gear across the span of three amiibo, gear that has the same random skills as every other gear in the game that you can get, if that is an outrage or an offense to you, then you were destined to find some other reason to hate this game anyways
You seem to be taking this very personally. Me not purchasing a game /=/ outrage. Despite what you choose to believe, I don't look for reasons to hate games, that wouldn't be doing me any favours.
You also don't seem to understand the problem that I and many others have with this kind of content. It's not that it wasn't developed seperately, it's that for a retail game that is at full price (£40/$60) you should be getting ALL the content that is available at launch. If I wanted to have all this game had to offer I'd have to pay considerably extra just to buy some rare toys. Content that affects the game is another issue, especially in a multiplayer game.
I explain this because you don't seem to understand my stance on the matter. Now if what you say is true, and this content is in fact all fully cosmetic, then I have no problem with the game, but I hope you now understand why I oppose the concept. If not, then that's fine, each consumer makes their own choice about where they draw the line.
