This weekend - from 3rd to 5th April - the Anaheim Convention Center in California will be taken over by WonderCon, an expo that celebrates films, TV, comics and video games. It's an extravaganza of noise, excitement and cosplay, and Nintendo of America has announced its plans for its own booth and events at the expo.
There'll be a variety of events and competitions, such as a social media campaign in which attendees can try and win Splatoon prizes. One of the most fun announcement relates to amiibo, as attendees are invited to take along their trained-up Super Smash Bros. amiibo to enter virtual battles. Winners will win figures, with those in first place scooping a Gold Mario amiibo; this toy is due individually in stores this weekend, but will likely be hard to find. The amiibo contests - for which 32 spots are first-come-first-serve from an hour before each tournament - will run at the following times (all local time):
- Friday, April 3 - 2pm
- Friday, April 3 - 5pm
- Saturday, April 4 - 11am
- Saturday, April 4 - 4pm
- Sunday, April 5 - 11:30am
- Sunday, April 5 - 3:30pm
While Capcom's Monster Hunter-themed caravan will be at the show, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate director Kaname Fujioka and series executive producer Ryozo Tsujimoto will also be hosting a developer's panel - that's on Sunday 5th April at 1:30pm in Room 300DE of the venue.
Finally, the following games will be playable at the Nintendo booth:
- Splatoon
- Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
- Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition
- Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
Let us know what you think of this line-up and whether you're planning to head to WonderCon this week.

Grrr, I live in Georgia. Oh well. To all my fellow gamers in Cali, HAVE FUN!!!
If nintendo wakes up they could've made a fortune on the gold amiibo mario. Instead eBay scum will line their own pockets.
Win a Gold Mario Amiibo?
Sounds too good to be true.
This must be an April Fools joke.
Yes! I can finally try Splatoon!
If I show up early enough.
I wonder how many people will put their amiibo on the SSB tournament Gamepad only to find it now contains naught but Mario Party 10 data?
Good to see Splatoon, even w/o a date it's still looking good for May, but Mario Maker and Yoshi's WW not being playable is a bit of a concern. 8 more hours I guess.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I counted 5 3DS games and 1 Wii U.
ahem, 4 3DS games, 1 NEW 3DS XL game, 1 Wii U game. So Wii U is getting as much love as the NEW 3DS XL. That's not good.
It's okay, I already have a Gold Mario.
This makes going to Wondercon even more exciting! This convention (which is owned by Comic-Cons how Comic-Co used to be about 10 years ago. It gets bigger every year
I want that mario!
