Within the last hour Nintendo & DeNA gave a presentation to media in Japan announcing their "Business and Capital Alliance".
Whilst the live stream of the briefing did have translation, Nintendo have now published the presentation, in English, on their website.
Thank you for attending this briefing at such short notice. I am Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo. Together with Mr. Isao Moriyasu, president of DeNA Co., Ltd., I would like to explain the business and capital alliance of the two companies that each company announced earlier today.
We recommend that if you're interested in this announcement, or concerned, to give the presentation a good read. We will be working through it ourselves and will post some follow up articles throughout the day.

Viewing the briefing/announcement live was really exciting and what nintendo said made alot of sense, i have actually high hopes for this, nintendo has learned alot from there past mistakes and im confindent they will do good with this, there new platform i think will probably be there next handheld or some specific device focusing on more mobile gaming, im quite not sure, but im sure Wii U's cycle is long from over and they said there passion grew even more for deticated video game consoles and software for those deticated consoles. Wich is very positive ^^
So is it a good thing for Nintendo to make smart devices games? Also, can someone explains the NX game platform for me?
I think Anyone skeptical should read that whole presentation! I now have full faith that Nintendo and DeNA can produce quality multiplat content!
@Azooooz From what I read, it's not a smartphone or PC-esque platform, Iwata uses it as an argument that Nintendo isn't leaving the console sector. That makes me think it isn't QOL either, I just assume it's something Very Nintendo!
So there is a new console in 2016/2017 if i understand this? Or something like a vr related hardware addon for the wiiu? Do you think they gone announce something this E3? Or next year?
After reading the translated presentation, I now feel a bit optimistic about this collaboration. If this will help Nintendo to attract hundreds of millions of people, or at least hundreds of thousands, then why not?
@rippertnl
They will show more info on the next console next year which if we look at history means it will launch earliest at 2017 and consoles usually launch during holiday season or before that. So probably 2017 holidays or early 2018 at earliest. Could even be 2018 holidays.
I would personally think that they will not announce anything at E3 regarding this. They will however push their new mobile division hard, that's gonna be certain.
Hopefully it's all about the games
I like how this thread has the people actually reading the announcements and being excited and optimistic instead of the other thread where people are all "NOOOO, DOOOOMED, 3RD PARTY" -esque
At first I was sceptical but after reading the whole thing I'm very excited. I think this membership system could be what we've been asking for for years and the NX... Like what? Iwata just tells everyone a totally new dedicated gaming platform is coming. Nintendo Cross? Maybe this will finally be the joining of the home console and the handheld? Amiibo interaction with phones? Get hype.
Nintendo please make a dedicated cell device.
@DinoFett
Who would buy it? Not even Microsoft is able to enter that market. Nintendo could never do it.
@ryanator008
Because I did it when nintendo was new and the atari and comodore fans I knew said the same thing. Why would you buy it?
After reading this my fears have been squashed and I now think this is a brilliant move.
It's a very good statement, IMO.
It goes some way to putting into simple language how complex the business is and does demonstrate how often overly-simplistic opinions are tossed around on threads such as these by people who haven't got the slightest clue.
The massive emphasis put on IP is reassuring. Nintendo doesn't want to exploit 30 years of IP via cheap, throwaway games; Nintendo is seeking to strengthen its IP always, focusing on quality but using the proliferation of devices to increase public awareness of those IPs.
Who's up for a game of Angry Smash Bros.?
@ryanator008 Producing a mobile device that isn't cellphone enabled/compatible in the 2010s is daft. I suspect the DS line of hardware will be the last Nintendo mobile device that doesn't integrate telephony. If the 3DS did phone calls I'd have bought one years ago.
Anyone freaking out in the other articles should read this. It is quite sexy.
Having read all the other articles and now the full transcript I'm actually really excited about this. My 3 main reasons being:
1. Cross device purchases for nintendo games. I can imagine the new membership scheme allowing us to buy the next new mario game on Wii U and using our NNID then download a version on the N3DS and or your smartphone and tablet. How about downloading the next big 3DS game and then being allowed to link both my kids 2DS to the same NNID so they can also download the game at no extra cost.
2. Amiibo functionality on your phone. Most high end smartphones have an NFC chip right? So that means I can scan in my Amiibo collection and then when I'm out and about they interact with other people's phones/scanned amiibo. Which leads me to ....
3. Streetpass / spotpass on your phone. Imagine having your NNID and your Mii set up on your phone, exchanging Streetpass hits and doing Streetpass quest, puzzle quest and the like all on your mobile with the chance to sync up to your 3DS or Wii U or NX if you wish. It could be a way too give you a gamertag ( for want of a better term) to view and exchange with other nintendo NX users, logging and exchanging trophies/achievements/stamps and posting to Miiverse with your daily interactions etc!
Just a few thoughts I had about how this whole partnership could pan out and that's what is really exciting, there's so many opportunities for Nintendo to succeed.
I'll have to give it a skim, or full read.
