IRONFALL Invasion, the free-to-play 3DS eShop exclusive from VD-DEV, has achieved an impressive number of downloads since its launch in February. It's been announced that the indie-effort has been downloaded more than 300,000 times worldwide so far; the initial download is free and gives limited access to the single-player and online multiplayer options, with three one-off payment options to unlock more.
When we spoke to the developer around the time of its launch, it was emphasized that gamer feedback on the third-person shooter would be gathered, with a patch to tweak and improve the experience already being in the works. It's now been confirmed that, with comments on Miiverse and Twitter contributing, that first major patch is available now on the 3DS eShop.
The changelog is below, including how it affects those playing the free version and others that have bought more content.
New features for all IRONFALL Invasion players:
- In the Controls menu of the game's settings, the "Aim Sensitivity" and "Camera Sensitivity" sliders have been expanded with more increments to allow for finer tuning according to the player's preference.
- In Multiplayer: in the "free-for-all" game mode, players who leave a game before the end have their score reset.
- In Multiplayer: the range of the "shock gun" item has been increased.
- In Multiplayer: the damage and bullet statistics of the "grenade launcher", "explosive rifle" and "shotgun" items have been adjusted accordingly to reflect balance issues noticed in user comments.
- In Multiplayer: the respawn algorithm has been improved.
- During a sprint, it is now easier to turn left and right.
- The U-turn command (pressing back twice) has been improved to decrease involuntary U-turns; it is now necessary to press back twice in a faster way than before.
New features for players having purchased IRONFALL Invasion content:
- In Multiplayer: when joining a quick online match, it is possible for players to filter out the "Tanks (Demo)" map from their quick online match search, to allow for more variety in the automatic selection of arenas.
- In Multiplayer: players will now remain invincible for 4 seconds when they respawn.
- In Multiplayer: players will now also receive credits if they finish in second place.
- It is now possible to take cover while sprinting.
- There is now an additional lock-on on the vertical (Y) axis in aim mode.
There are plenty of tweaks there, and it'll be interesting to see how players react to the changes, and how well the game will do in the coming months.
Have you tried IRONFALL Invasion yet, or are you yet to pick it up?

No.
I plan on getting the game's multiplayer soon and expect it to be a good time. The demo for the campaign was pretty mediocre, but the game's a decent shooter and it's one hell of a technical achievement.
Decent game for sure, nothing mind blowing, but not bad.
Between the overload of first party titles, shovelware, and JRPG's, this was a breath of fresh air.
Yeah, I dl'ed it and played it or day and haven't touched it since. Love fps but this one was just not for me. It reminded me of everything I hated about the genre.
The game is fun, but it's really hard to play right-hand controls when I'm a lefty so I haven't bought it yet. [Also I don't have a Circle Pad Pro or a New 3DS so I have to stick with that control scheme]
It's time to give this a try. It's had an interesting appearance that puts it above many eshop titles especially because that genre isn't flooded on the eshop. My 13 year old and his friends will enjoy it.
I'm LOVING this game so far. Glad to see they actually listened to the community and improved the game based on it. I thought it played great before, now it must be way better. Haters gon' hate, but I've played Iron Fall more than Killzone on my PS Vita.
Ill pick it up now and see if it's worth investing more into
It's a decent game. I bought the Campaign segment. While it doesn't do anything particularly different, it's nice to have this genre finally appear on the 3DS.
if you dont have the new 3ds or the circle pad pro and you are left handed this game sucks. they need a better control scheme
I was having a few issues with the C-Stick, but I've discovered that I was actually using it wrong; it's ideal to have your entire thumb over the stick. They hollowed out that notch for a reason. If you don't, the camera is more likely to move at an angle.
As for the game itself, seemed OK. I deleted the demo, but I might give it a 2nd shot sometime. More aiming/ camera sensitivity options are very welcome.
It's pretty cool, but I'm waiting to see if they release on the JP eShop. If they do, I'll buy both parts of the game for play on my New 3DS.
@audiobrainiac Killzone Mercenary felt 100 times better than this game control wise and is what developers should be taking notes on when making fps games for handhelds, this game felt clunky and poor in comparison.
Amazing... If only the Mario Kart 8 team cared as much about fixing issues with their game.. Item balancing among other things...
@Jazzer94
I agree, Killzone is quite an amazing FPS game for a handheld and I'm happy to have it. But my 3DS feels way better to hold to me and I have an easier time using the Circle pad and c-stick than the dual analog sticks on Vita. "Clunky and poor" is scoffing just a little, don't ya think? I know opinions will vary, but I happen to have the same fun with either game. Perhaps I just like this game's style and the console better.
Hopefully the U-Turn feature is actually working well now! About half my deaths are from trying to back up, and the game decided I was trying to U-Turn.
I would much prefer it to be button-mapped though. For example, pressing down + Sprint would probably be the best way to avoid these accidental spins.
the game is good, but i wish they did better job of moving around because using the 3ds to turn around kinda get annoying however the Circle Pad Pro may help that issue.
It's a decent game. Three guys made this game which is pretty awesome
I actually had quite a bit of fun with the single player demo (though if I get this it'll be after I get a New 3DS XL because I didn't like the stylus aiming and not having an option for ABXY button aiming). The voice acting kind of ticked me off though (e.g. "Jim...take cover...they're here..." No enthusiasm).
Its just a regular old game. When i downloaded it, my biggest gripe was the terrible sound design. It seemed like an unimportant afterthought to the devs. So grating and tinny, that i couldnt do it. Its basically Gears 3. You know, the not very good one. I will agree with others, it is a great technical feat, but the overall package comes off as passable at best.
I played this game once, and it was absolutely terrible. The control scheme is wonky and unresponsive, especially if you don't have a C-stick or Circle Pad Pro. Don't even try to use the touch screen controls. They don't work at all.
@robotron2084, the control scheme without the circle pad pro or c-stick is controlling the camera with the stylus and movement is done with the the circle pad. so if you write with your left hand its unplayable and there are no other control options that i have found. essentially yes it is pikmin 3, but pikmin 3(at least the demo) has other control options.
This is old news. I already downloaded the update last week. And I not even needed it.
My friends and I are always looking for online multiplayer games now that we all live in different states. This one is pretty decent. Though I admit, most of its merits are because of how technically impressive it is, and not the gameplay itself.
Like any multiplayer FPS, we still get that frantic rush trying to get that one last kill with 10 seconds on the clock, we still exclaim when we get a head shot from across the stage, and we still get nervous being chased around the various maps.
The improvements made were definitely warranted and I'm glad to see that the devs care enough to make changes based on feedback. This isn't a perfect game by far, but VD-Dev made so much out of so little that its well worth any money you put into it to support them.
Oh ya I forgot I downloaded this game. I was going to play it but then Code name STEAM stole the thunder. I'll update and probably try it out if no other game(s) distracts me.
