After a dominant début for Dragon Quest Heroes in its first week on PS3 and PS4 in Japan, the latest Media Create results bring a new 3DS release into the reckoning, even if it can't seize top-spot; hardware, meanwhile, remains steady for another week.
New in the software charts is Etrian Mystery Dungeon, the crossover RPG from Atlus that incorporates elements from both named franchises - its début is solid, albeit not enough to claim number one status. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D is still doing reasonably well, though the long-delayed localisation of LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins has only had a modest start. The results are below, with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PS3] Dragon Quest Heroes (Square Enix, 02/26/15) – 67,514 (392,960)
- [3DS] Etrian Mystery Dungeon (Atlus, 03/05/15) – 65,226 (New)
- [PS4] Dragon Quest Heroes (Square Enix, 02/26/15) – 35,425 (304,729)
- [3DS] The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D (Nintendo, 02/14/15) – 23,764 (365,761)
- [3DS] New Prince of Tennis: Go to the Top (FuRyu, 03/05/15) – 22,568 (New)
- [PSV] God Eater 2: Rage Burst (Bandai Namco, 02/19/15) – 17,710 (289,539)
- [PS4] Evolve (2K Games, 03/05/15) – 16,851 (New)
- [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Shinuchi (Level-5, 12/14/14) – 14,278 (2,528,184)
- [3DS] LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins (Nintendo, 03/05/15) – 13,284 (New)
- [3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire (Pokemon, 11/21/14) – 11,297 (2,549,155)
- [3DS] Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo, 09/13/14) – 7,431 (2,173,243)
- [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Capcom, 10/11/14) – 6,673 (2,492,332)
- [PS3] Dragon Ball Xenoverse (Bandai Namco, 01/29/15) – 5,787 (86,874)
- [PS3] River City Super Sports Challenge: All-Star Special (Arc System Works, 03/05/15) – 5,473 (New)
- [Wii U] Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo, 05/29/14) – 5,342 (931,332)
- [PSV] Diabolik Lovers: Dark Fate (Idea Factory, 02/26/15) – 4,902 (12,164)
- [Wii U] Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Nintendo, 12/06/14) – 4,829 (602,560)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo, 11/08/12) – 4,671 (3,933,006)
- [3DS] Doraemon Shin Nobita no Daimakyo: Peko to 5-nin no Tankentai (FuRyu, 03/05/15) – 4,663 (New)
- [PS4] God Eater 2: Rage Burst (Bandai Namco, 02/19/15) – 3,654 (48,883)
In the hardware stakes Sony's PS4 sales have declined after last week's major boost, but still keep it ahead of the New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL) - Nintendo's larger portable is back up to second place despite a drop, while combining the whole 3DS 'family' would see it just take the top spot. The Wii U saw a modest increase, for its part; results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 33,753 (46,139)
- New 3DS LL – 21,402 (22,620)
- PlayStation Vita – 19,757 (23,619)
- New 3DS – 7,661 (8,515)
- PlayStation 3 – 7,645 (8,926)
- Wii U – 7,379 (6,606)
- 3DS – 2,566 (2,795)
- 3DS LL – 2,321 (2,666)
- PlayStation Vita TV – 621 (838)
- Xbox One – 445 (703)
Overall these are reasonable results for Nintendo and Atlus, though plenty of bigger battles await throughout the rest of 2015.

It really took long for Japan to get Lego City 3DS.
For what it's worth, I think Famitsu had EMD at 1st with about 70k, so the battle for first was very close. Either way, that's an improvement over both the last Etrian Odyssey game and the last Mystery Dungeon game.
Nice to see Majora's Mask still chugging along. Mario Kart 8 looks like it will crawl past a million some time this year too.
Massive drop for Dragon Quest Heroes, but pretty standard for Musou games. I'm impressed at the solid hold for PS4 hardware despite the big drop in software.
3DS still has top spot if you don't split it into categories.
@JaxonH - But why are 4,000 people PER WEEK still buying the old 3DS models? I can imagine some people not knowing, like an older relative purchasing a gift, and a few more wanting a particular limited edition model like MH4, but 4k per week, this week and last, still seems like a lot.
The 2 older models combined equal 2/3 (4,887 vs 7,661) of the new 3DS w/ the faceplates. Can't sell faceplates for the old models, eh?
@rjejr
I imagine price is why. Original models are probably retailing around $100 (or rather, the yen equivalent of $100, so 1080 yen?). Retailers probably are running deals to clear stock, and I imagine for some it's hard to pass up a 3DS for less than the cost of 2 console games.
@rjejr Cheapskates buying gifts maybe?
That Xbone sales tho
@JaxonH like 12,000 yen. That sucker's value is is sinking
Good for the fans, but i'm really not a fan of 3DS. The way I see it it looks like ps one graphics. We're not in 1996 anymore. They are way behind even for handhelds! My opinion
@Alucard83 Nah. They look more like Wii graphics. The 3D can make it look better sometimes though.
@Superstick @Alucard83
I kinda agree on you both on some points. As a first time N3DS owner, I have yet to be blown away by the n3DS. The Wii U did so on the first month (Nov 2013).
@rjejr price cut on older models
I'm not sure if I want Etrian Mystery Dungeon, but it looks really fun...what to do...what to do...well, I'm sure my wallet will decide for me when the time comes! XD
@outburst Probably because of the Wii limitations. Wii couldn't do much in terms of graphics but now with the Wii U, Nintendo games look better than ever. Like for example, we've never had an HD Metroid before so when we get one, you'll be amazed by how it looks.
EDIT: Like when they first revealed Zelda U...
@Hy8ogen I don't know why Microsoft bothers with releasing in Japan...
@CAM290 They even got Scalebound to be xbone exclusive. What a waste
@Hy8ogen - "Scalebound to be xbone exclusive. What a waste"
Platinum Games made W101 a Wii U exclusive, so "waste" is what they seem to like to do. And Bayonetta 2, but I think that at least sold more than W101 ever did.
@faint - I'm an admitted cheapskate, but I find it hard to buy an outdated model on the shelf next to a newer model unless it's a serious price cut.
I got a PS3 for Christmas over a PS4 b/c $200 vs $400, and the PS3 included $70 Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel starter kit for my kids under the tree. I'm still waiting for Uncharted 4 (until next spring apparently) before buying a PS4.
My point is, must've been some serious price cuts like the old 3DS XL did NOT get in the US. I'd buy 1 for $80, but not $180 or even $100.
@rjejr
Just in Target(US) today and as others have stated the retail situation just feels very off:
2DS $130
no 3DS
3DS XL (old) $200
New 3DS XL $200
I guess... the adapter?
I blame it on fear of coming in below profits this next quarter.
The good(?) news is that Project STEAM was totally sold out.
@rjejr I still haven't finished W101. Great game tho. Just too consumed with monster hunter.
18. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo, 11/08/12) – 4,671 (3,933,006)
I love you Japan.
@aaronsullivan - "Project STEAM"
Codename STEAM? It doesn't come out until Friday BTW. Target always has those empty slots set up on Tuesday when the rest of the industry releases new games. Usually in my Target the Nintendo games are out early as well, and when I try to buy them they won't let me, but I doubt they would be sold out 3 days early.
As for the 2/3DS prices, I think we're in agreement on that list being a bit "off".
@rjejr Lol. Yeah, my comment accuracy score is completely shot now.
There were so many old 3DS XL units left, too. Ouch. That probably helps explain why there are no small-sized 3DS units of either kind. They need people to buy up those old XLs. They need a bundle deal or price drop though. Not good for margins I guess.
Was shocked to see Toon Link at the store at first but I guess he's not too rare.
@aaronsullivan - Glad you lol'd, my comment came off nasty but I couldnt figure out how to tone it down, just hopeing youd give me benefit of the doubt.
Toon Link amiibo? I saw him a few times as well and I like the look but we already have the original Link so whats the point?
Almost related, Amazon let me order Skylanders Kaos trap today, they said it would be in stock in a month or two. I'm guessing when the other 2 Trap Masters my kids want come out, Enigma and Short Cut. Nintendo has their issues, Activision has theirs.
@aaronsullivan Toon Link is super duper common in Wave 3, so no surprises.
@PolarKoalaBear I gave up looking for Amiibo I want. I wanted Pit once. I wanted King Dedede once. Too much work, too much $$$ to avoid the work, so I haven't been keeping up. It was novel to see any wave 3.
I have this tiny little hope that Nintendo will give us all another chance with restocking everything(?) along with the card releases.
I will say that the unnaturally coveted nature of the amiibo has gotten my students talking about them even though I know they are generally not into current Nintendo hardware and games. So, maybe the shortages have a beneficial side to scalpers and Nintendo to some degree.
Animal Crossing still being in the top 20 and selling close to 4 million is crazy.
I wonder how good PS3's River City Super Sports Challenge: All-Star Special is.
I've seen it's got online so even if it's just the DS game with some high-res backgrounds i'd definitely like to see it for a good price in the PS Store here.
@rjejr It is likely cheaper.. If you just want to play games and don't care about the rest of the revised features as regular 3ds works just as well.
