We already know that The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D has been an early success since its launch last week, and we now have strong début sales in Japan to add to the picture; it gave the New Nintendo 3DS hardware a boost, too.
The Zelda remake was the comfortable winner in the Media Create software top 20 this week, though Bandai Namco contributed another 3DS newcomer with The Seven Deadly Sins: Unjust Sin arriving in third spot. Three iterations of Samurai Warriors 4-II can be found near the top on Sony systems, though some evergreen 3DS releases are still weighing in; the top 20, with lifetime sales in brackets, is below.
- [3DS] The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D – 230,065 (New)
- [PS3] Samurai Warriors 4-II – 44,574 (New)
- [3DS] The Seven Deadly Sins: Unjust Sin – 33,270 (New)
- [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Shinuchi – 23,844 (2,479,724)
- [PSV] Samurai Warriors 4-II – 23,519 (New)
- [PS4] Samurai Warriors 4-II – 22,468 (New)
- [PS3] Dragon Ball Xenoverse – 16,406 (60,627)
- [3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire – 12,922 (2,513,921)
- [PS4] Dragon Ball Xenoverse – 12,513 (47,203)
- [3DS] Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS – 9,532 (2,149,794)
- [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate – 9,234 (2,470,154)
- [PSV] A Good Librarian Like a Good Shepherd: Library Party – 8,950 (New)
- [PS3] Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin – 6,883 (14,652)
- [PSV] Ukiyo no Roushi – 6,699 (New)
- [PS4] Far Cry 4 – 6,551 (52,580)
- [Wii U] Kirby and the Rainbow Curse – 6,258 (58,267)
- [PSV] Hyakka Yakou – 6,235 (New)
- [Wii U] Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – 6,118 (587,913)
- [PS3] Far Cry 4 – 5,280 (32,159)
- [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke – 5,226 (3,103,815)
In terms of hardware sales, numbers crept up for all systems except the Xbox One. The Wii U's increase was minimal and the system is still struggling, but the big winner was the New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL), which maintained its position on top and enjoyed a significant bump; no doubt the limited edition Majora's Mask 3D bundle contributed to this. Results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- New 3DS LL – 41,821 (21,650)
- PlayStation 4 – 21,381 (18,758)
- PlayStation Vita – 10,901 (10,013)
- New 3DS – 9,584 (7,916)
- Wii U – 7,007 (6,517)
- PlayStation 3 – 6,683 (6,426)
- 3DS LL – 4,126 (3,084)
- 3DS – 3,214 (2,642)
- PlayStation Vita TV – 588 (560)
- Xbox One – 191 (238)
A successful week for Nintendo and its latest blockbuster release on 3DS, and it'll be interesting to see how the momentum for Majora's Mask and the New Nintendo 3DS hold up in the next few weeks.

Nice first week for Zelda. I'm anxious to see the worldwide first week numbers for the game.
So what's the next cause for a Wii U sales bounce? Mario Party 10? Splatoon in May?
Edit: Nevermind, XCX is April 29 and Nintendo even made a bundle, surley that bundle will sell.
Really seems like a good time for a big price cut on the system. Who wants to buy a Wii U when they can be buying a Majoras Mask new 3DS?
The announcement of Zelda HD coming this year in 2015 is probably the reason for the bump in Wii U sales. MM3D probably reminded people of the coming Zelda HD...
Also, I didn't buy the MM New 3DS XL... I got the New 3DS Ambassador Edition instead xD
Also the New 3DS XL has 171ppi on the top screen, whereas the New 3DS has 215ppi on the top screen...

You know whats funny ?
The New 3DS (both) have almost half of Vita life time sales in Japan
For the record, OoT sold around 160k on first week, this is super good
@rjejr
If I remember correctly Japan really loves party games. I'm sure there will be a significant boost with Mario Party. That said, every time there's a boost, it dissipates very quickly.
I really can't see Japan going nuts for Splatoon, honestly.
I guess a lot of new New 3DS owners went with ORAS and Smash, in addition to MM. It almost feels wrong seeing this without either Mario Kart game making it to the top 20.
@MoonKnight7 - "Japan really loves party games"
That seems like a contradiction to me. Nobody in Japan wants a home console b/c everybody plays on their handhelds, but a game that requires a group of people to play on a home console at the same time would do well there.
OK that sentence is a mess, not quite awake yet, and not saying your wrong, just that it seems odd sales would spike for a home console to play a game w/ other people. I don't doubt the game selling well to those who already own a Wii U.
Oh wait, nevermind, XCX is April 29. Told you I wasn't awake yet.
So tempted to get Ukiyo no Roushi and Samurai Warriors 4-II (which I can't decide if I want it for the Vita or if I want to buy it for PS4 so i have an incentive to buy the machine....)
@sinalefa - MK7 is several years old, MK8 is nearly a year old. Can't stay in the top 20 for that long.
This is why Nitnedo needs a Greatest Hits line. Wii U may be limited to LCU, NSMBU and Pikmin 3, but on 3DS they could have Starfox 64 3D, LoZ OoT, SM3DL, MK7, Kid Icarus will be 3 years next month and several others.When a game is over 3 years old it could use a price cut, and "new 3DS" owners could benefit from seeing a GH line of games to play.
I know that Japan don't do Xbox, and that 191 sales is nothing new, I wonder how many of the 191 people asked for a Sony or Nintendo carrier bag to avoid getting ridiculed? It must be like ordering gravy in a Pie & Mash shop
Glad to see a Zelda game doing well in Japan. Let's home Zelda U also does well.
@MoonKnight7 They do love them some party games that I can say.
Anyway I hope Nintendo gives us a couple of bundles as well. Really thought Bayonetta 2 and others like Devils Third and Splatoon can benefit from them.
The fact that the New XL outsells the New 3DS further proves the point that NA made a good decision. Granted it all depends on the style and fashion you choose to play but in the end, if something works, they put more of that instead of the other.
@rjejr
I had to really dig for this.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/11/wii_party_u_and_wii_fit_u_deliver_major_increase_to_wii_u_hardware_sales_in_japan
Now that article does reference that there was a bundle with Wii Party U, however, it continued to sell very well beyond that. That hardware jump was quite significant considering what it was the week before. If I recall correctly, we never saw a hardware jump like that again until Mario Kart 8.
@MoonKnight7 - Oh yeah, I remember those bundles and the huge bump in sales. Guess the precedent has been set then. Maybe Nintendo should be bundling MP 10 in Japan? Or maybe they are just waiting for the XCX bundles to sell?
On a down note, Wii U consoles and games will apparently have some competition from PS4 over the next few weeks and months. Can't read Japanese so don't know what all of these are, but Dragon Quest Heroes will sell, of that I'm sure.
Wii U has a similar pic, slightly smaller selection, so might as well:
@Bushido_Fai
PPI is even lower than that.
@rjejr
Well, the PS4 is starting to hit it's stride so I'm not overly surprised. It's too bad Nintendo couldn't get in on Dragon Quest, that one alone is stiff competition like you said.
Sidenote:
Are these real ads? The PS4 seems legit, but the Nintendo one looks fan made (not that it diminishes your point, I'm just saying). If Nintendo actually made that they should be embarrassed. Haha.
@AVahne Source?

These guys are basing their numbers on a 400x240 screen though.
But I've seen these conflicting numbers for a while now and I think the lower numbers just make more sense. Picture quality looks far too low for the screen to be above 200 ppi.
Wow! I'm actually shocked to see this. I figured it would sell well like maybe 150k at the most but not that much.
XboxOne is doomed!
@Bushido_Fai (@AVahne)
I literally just read this yesterday in Game Informer. They stated that the PPI of the new 3DS XL was actually under 100. Well, well below your average smart phone.
I've been trying to find the source on their website, but I cannot find it. I read this in the form of ancient technology called a magazine, haha.
@Spoony_Tech wanna play some MH4? I'm online now.
Thats not a real Dragon Quest game, its a Warriors game, doubt it would be as big as people think about it
Still whatever theres no competition when theres Xenoblade X
@Windy I'm still doing these meaningless quests. Haven't fought a main monster yet. How far are you?
@rjejr What's the game with the White background and Gold Japanese text on it called???
@Faruko I cannot wait to try out this online play for Xenoblade X. The first Xenoblade is my favorite game of all time on any system.
@Spoony_Tech just beat Jaggi. I'm still HR 1. Wanna do some collecting and small quests online? I'm up for it. If you host we can beat the first 10 quests or so. Err maybe a few lol I'm only about 10 quests finished online
@Windy @Spoony_Tech both can add me 4640-0256-4473 so we can hunt online (cant now, im at work) (FarukoSH is my NNiD)
@MoonKnight7 Dragon Quest 10 says hi
@Faruko Folks said that about Hyrule Warriors and while your statement is totally true that skin is going to attract users. Heck I'm considering a PS4 just because of DQW and the new Yakuza games.
@TingLz
Well sure, but Heroes is a different game. That's what is being referenced. Who cares about what happened 2 years ago?
@MoonKnight7 - The PS4 pic did seem legit but the Nintendo one looked fan made like you said.
@rjejr
PS4 pic is real.

@Spoony_tech thanks for the games. Sorry I missed you guys on that last quest. I was signing up as you guys left. I needed a shower anyway then I'm off to the doctor. Holy Cow your a great MH player. I'm not that good. But this is my favorite version of MH so far. I had a real frustrating time with MHTri on Wii. Have a good one see you later
@Windy I had too much practice lol. Was good for sure. Thanks for helping me get my G Jaggi armor. I wasn't too worried I had only my first set against him. Its when he spams that one whole body throw 3 times in a row that can some times get ya.
Good to see MM3D get off to a good start. It will be interesting to see how it fares. Ocarina 3D didn't get off to a good start, with 160k ish week 1, but ended up with over 600k sales. On the other hand, Link Between Worlds did great week 1, 240k or so, but hasn't even doubled that number in the 16 months since.
Also, kind of a good point, but this is the first week (excluding New 3DS launch week) where the 3DS sales were higher this year than the equivalent sales last year. It's been about 18 months of downward trend until this week. 58k this week, and only 40k this week last year. Although it's still slightly down on last year's numbers overall.
That Xenoblade Wii U box art is gorgeous. Hope they keep that for the Western release.
@Takerkaneanite6 - Sorry, I have no idea.
@Saizo - Thanks. Nice cat avatar. And I don't even like cats.
Smash Bros: the honeymoon is over.
Now that the software is coming the PS4 has finally found its feet.
Kirby is disappointing. I really don't see it doing very well in the west either.
Wii U sales normal, which is a good thing.
Is it actually worth MS being in Japan? XB1 will be in the double digits soon.
That massive ad campaign I read about was definitely a waste of money.
My girlfriend of ten years, now my fiancee (getting married next year), has a gift coming from Amazon to me for our anniversary...It was delayed...I hope its the 3DS Majora bundle!!! I love Zelda, but have never played this game, so I would be a great way to experience it!!
Just got my LL in today....It looks WAY better than I expected. I liked the design from the pic but just holding it in hand...money well spent. Now I just have to get another memory card for setup.
I was able to get the New 3DS Majora's mask edition. I was too late for a pre-order but my gameshop (game mania in Belgium) had a cancelled order and they reserved it for me
