Pokémon Bank, the annual subscription service that allows you to store up to 3,000 'mon 'in the cloud' online, continues to roll on and provide a valuable back-up option. For $4.99 / £4.49 / €4.99 a year you can store Pokémon from Pokémon X & Y and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, while the Poké Transporter allows you to bring in squad members from Pokémon Black & White and Pokémon Black & White 2.
It's a handy tool, then, and the Pokémon Company has now announced a special promotion to entice more players to subscribe. Final evolutions of the first partner Pokémon in Pokémon HeartGold & Pokémon SoulSilver will be distributed at level 50 with hidden abilities - namely Meganium, Typhlosion, and Feraligatr. Details from the press release are below.
Meganium will come with the Hidden Ability Leaf Guard. Leaf Guard protects the Pokémon from status conditions when the sunlight is harsh or extremely harsh, and this Meganium knows Sunny Day—so it can change the weather to take advantage of its own Hidden Ability.
Typhlosion will have the Hidden Ability Flash Fire, which boosts the power of Fire-type moves by 50% and prevents this Pokémon from taking damage if hit with a Fire-type move. This Typhlosion knows Overheat, Flamethrower, and Flame Charge, maximising the advantage Flash Fire provides.
Feraligatr possesses the Hidden Ability Sheer Force, which eliminates the additional effects of moves used by the Pokémon, while increasing the move's power by 30%. This Feraligatr already knows three moves that have additional effects. Thanks to Sheer Force, it can deal major damage with these moves.
It's a pretty exciting giveaway, with the 'mon being given to subscribers that access Pokémon Bank between 27th February and 30th November this year. When the time comes gamers will need to use Pokémon Link in either X & Y or Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire after accessing the Bank with the relevant game; the 'mon will only be given out once per account, naturally.
Are any of you planning to pick up Pokémon Bank and subscribe for these freebies, or are you an existing subscriber and keen to pick these up? Let us know.

Sheer Force Feraligatr is extremely useful, but I'm pretty sure there's no shortage of him online if you ask around for breeding pokémon!
Awesome! Been wanting that feraligatr. Typhosions ability sucks but it can still work. Meganium has a decent one for its bulk.
Cool, I'm an existing subscriber. Feraligatr makes this gift for me.
Very good news, my subscription is still active, but I didn't use it as much as I planned originally; these gifts will help cover the costs XP
I like Pokemon Bank because they only allow one save file on Pokemon games
My kids also play Pokemon, but I am not buying 3 copies of every game. So I play the game first and when I am done I transfer all my Pokemon to the bank and then my kids take turn playing.
When they are done - I transfer my Pokemon back to the game.
So the Pokemon Bank comes in really handy for me.
So, do we have to subscribe by February 27th for get these?
@super08mario Flash Fire does not suck at all. Imagine a Choice Specs Flash Fire boosted full HP Eruption. GG.
so pay $5 for 3 pokemon which are a bit different :/ not worth it for me.
@seb5049 Heatran, chandelure and 4x fire resist wouldn't mind though.
@Gridatttack You have 6 pokemon in a team, not one...Perhaps a Lando-T could fit in well.
@Knuckles I just re-read the details from the official site - http://www.pokemon.com/uk/pokemon-news/bank-on-three-awesome-pokemon/ - and I think as long as you subscribe in the window (27th Feb to 30th November) you should be fine.
Yay! I've been waiting for another pkmn bank promotion! This is gonna be sweet.
First Celebi and now this, is the Pokemon Bank supposed to be set in Johto or something?
@RupeeClock
There was no (legal) way to get a Sheer Force Feraligatr until now, so you will start seeing a ton of them online after February.
@seb5049 that is true but you'd have to switch into a fire move or have a team mate with a fire move. Don't get me wrong it can sweep but it's circunstancial.....add sun boost to your post. Typhlosion should probably be scarfed so it won't get killed by garchomp but specs can break walls.
I was going to buy it when i got every single pokemon i could get, on the game but then i tried to use GTS and it worked between versions lol so i don´t need the bank anymore i can trade myself the pokemons. There is no risk becouse i trade regular pokes for rare pokes, who would do that???? well i already got some traded lol!!!!! so yea its a long method but is great.
Nice little incentive. I have Pokemon Bank already, so adds more value to me. $5 a year is chump change in comparison for the convenience, especially if have both X/Y and ORAS.
existing subscriber here. I want those three Pokemon. Johto is my favorite region.
@burninmylight
Not true, a sheer force male Totodile was distributed via the Dream World in Japan a few years ago.
This Totodile being male, in Generation 5's breeding mechanics meant it was not possible to get addition sheer force Totodiles.
But since generation 6 revised how hidden abilities are passed down, enabling male and genderless pokémon to do so, sheer force Feraligatr has been legal since X/Y and Pokébank launched.
@RupeeClock
Well let me be more clear and say that there was no way to get them in Gen 6 before this announcement. I didn't say SF Feraligatr is illegal; I said there was no legal way to get them, because there was no way to breed SF onto them. If there was, then we'd already be seeing a lot more Feraligatr's online, and it wouldn't be NU in Smogon's usage.
Better?
@burninmylight You say that as though people can't require a sheer force Totodile for breeding in X/Y message boards, such as ones legally obtained from Black/White's dream world and imported via Pokébank.
@RupeeClock
Just checked; it was illegal to use online (outside of PSS battles). That's why you don't see more of them.
@burninmylight
That's funny, it doesn't seem that it should have been illegal to use.
@RupeeClock
Contrary Serperior was illegal until the event that took place not too long ago. I guess Game Freak has decided to shorten the leash and show the starters some love. With Protean Greninja and Speed Boost Blaziken, those other starters really can't do any worse damage on the competitive scene.
@burninmylight It's great that normally not viable starters become viable with the introduction of hidden abilities.
Because who cares about Overgrow, Blaze and Torrent, seriously.
Not really. Kind of lost interest in Pokémon as a whole after my entire Bank was wiped without notice. May or may not have been partly my fault, but the least they could have done was given a heads up. Yeah, I'm still pretty annoyed.
@TulipWaltz
You said all your pokemon got deleted or your pokemon bank account got deleted?
I read that as Mega Evolutions. I'm sad now.
Just a nitpick but I think the title meant to say, "Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile"
OH MY F***ING GOD SHEER FORCE FERALIGATOR!! OH MY GOOOOD I COULD CRY!
I EFFING LOVE GEN 6!
@Tsurii897 The problem with Bank is that it bundles everything together under that $5 subscription even though the storage space is the only part of it that needs to be paid. I don't need to store 3000 Pokemon, I need to transfer and download events, and locking those things behind a paywall turns them into DLC (even worse, it's a recurring payment, which means the costs adds up). Chump change or not, they're taking features that were previously free or listed in the game's code and forcing you to pay for them.
Can't wait to breed one for online use !
Pokebank has been completely worth it for me, I finally caught them all and stored all of them in there which was pretty useful when I stared playing AS to get my shiny and oval charms quickly.
I can store pokemon that I bred and trained and I can also save my event and shiny pokemon in there too. Worth the yearly $5 to me.
Even more if they hand out free gifts like these from time to time.
Oooooh, Sheer Force Feraligator...
Is this really "Free" or is it more like "pay a $5 micro transaction to get these Pokemon and a service you didn't pay for because you didn't use it".
More free Pokémon! More hidden abilities!
Good thing I've already subscribed, because I wouldn't do it just for Pokémon DLC. But this way it's free for me, and it goes well with the other free starters. Yay!
@DarkKirby
To those already subscribed, yeah, obviously its just a free bonus. Will people actually subscribe just to get them though? Perhaps, at least the hardcore collectors and competitive battlers will, or so they're probably hoping.
Its both, and due to Pokebank's premiss as a lasting solution for generations to come, it becomes a more permanent bonus.
I might bite, only because I haven't transferred my Pokemon from Y to AS yet. Thats why people are "blowing this out of proportion" (they're not) @Tsurii897, its also an obvious extra incentive to subscribe. Game Freak isn't stupid, they know that.
@Tsurii897 "This is really just a little extra for people, who're using the service...it's not like you can't get these 3 at all outside of this promo."
Unless you count trading, you can't.
"It's really ridiculous how people are always blowing stuff like this out of proportion. It's just as stupid as the people who complain when they can't get the (free!!) stuff on Club Nintendo...it's not like Gamefreak (or Nintendo) owe you anything like this."
There's nothing being blown out of proportion. It's on disc DLC, there's nothing reasonable about that. Having to pay for transferring is completely nonsensical because you're just transferring data from one game you own to another game you own. And the Hidden Abilities exist in the code, but are arbitrarily locked away so that they could be used for events. It's nickel and diming, they're forcing you to pay for things that would've been available for free in past games.
@Bolt_Strike Pokemon Bank was the only method to get Pokemon transferred from Gen 5 to Gen 6. It was either that or no backwards compatibility. They gave a free trial so that people could transfer their Pokemon up. If you didn't do that during that time, then that's your fault.
Pokemon Bank is meant to be a long lasting solution for generations to come. A massive cloud storage system like that needs maintaining. $5 A YEAR isn't much at all. Skip a lunch or a download game and you've payed the subscription for the year. Does that add up over time? Sure, but that will take a long time to do so.
Also, it's not hiding any Pokemon events behind a paywall when you can obtain them via trading, one of the main points of Pokemon in the first place. Don't want to pay the measly $5? Go ask someone to trade you one of the starters. There's plenty of people out there who would be more than happy to trade one considering they are breedable. Celebi? You had the free trial to get that and if you didn't you can still trade for one. Cloning exists for a reason.
Sheer force feraligatr is the one I want most. I don't have the bank, so maybe i can trade for one.
@seb5049 You need a plan to get him hit by a fire attack though. no one would purposely do that.
@Bolt_Strike "Unless you count trading, you can't."?
if trading isn't an option, why play Pokemon at all? the whole reason for two versions is to encourage players to trade.
"It's on disc DLC...It's nickel and diming, they're forcing you to pay for things that would've been available for free in past games."
False. No one is forcing you do pay for anything. in fact,you can easily get these Pokemon by TRADING for them.
Pull your head out and stop making this look like a huge issue when it's not.
Freebies and extra stuff is always nice. I still have to grab the current free ones. I about 1/2 through AS and stopped, I'll have to finish the main story.
@Dexter_D
Past games had the Pal Park that allowed you to transfer Pokemon from older games to the newer ones. Gen 5 to 6 had an excuse, X/Y and OR/AS doesn't.
Making people who just want a one-time transfer to pay for a full year is ridiculous. They basically get a free $5 since most people would only need it for about an hour. He wasn't just talking about hidden abilities.
@Zombie_Barioth see, how capitalism works, is peopel charge money for goods and services. it's be nice if it was free, but $5 per YEAR is pretty good for what's offered.
"most people would only need it for about an hour"
they give you 30 days free.
I've had it since it came out, and i've only paid $5 once. Neat thing is, my pass is still active until the 5th of march, so I could stop using it altogether.
the fact that this is the "palPark" for future gens is great too.
You guys seem like the type of people that get up in arms about all DLC regardless of what the content may be
I wasn't expecting anything more after the Celebi for opening an account so three more rare ability/moves Pokemon is brilliant. Plus, Johto!
I hope the bank gets an update at some point with better search options. I tried searching for every Pokemon I'd got from Hayley in Pokemon Ranch, what a nightmare.
@Dexter_D
Cute, but I never said anything about it being free.
That 30-day trial started last year when it launched, most people have likely used it up by now. What I'm talking about is the one year subscription being the only option. That $5 is to pay for a whole year of server-space for storage, which not everybody wants. Alot of people only want the transfer tool.
Why not give people the option of paying for a shorter period, say 2-3 months? Or make an app version that uses the SD card for storage? Considering this actually would have been in the game due to having been a standard feature as of gen 4, and people have to pay $5 for not even 5 cents worth of service according to the montly cost, they should do something. That whats ridiculous.
@Tsurii897
Couldn't agree more. The entitlement never ceases to amaze me.
But anyway, this is great news. Sheer Force Gatr will be great. Nice to hear it's hidden ability will be finally released.
@Dexter_D The thing about DLC is that it's only beneficial when it adds something to the game. Most DLC, this one included, subtracts things that were in past games. You're getting less bang for your buck out of this system.
@RupeeClock I don't think that ever happened, you cannot use sheer force feraligatr online, therefore it was never officially released :/
Please provide proof if it has been distributed because all of my research points towards the Japanese distribution being false.
I don't see why people are complaining about pokebank, I guess it wasn't made for some people. I use it a lot to store Pokemon and also to transfer them between my Y and AS. It's only $5 and perhaps this is a reward for those like myself that have been making use of their subscription.
@DontPlayDumb The Pokémon did. About 100 of them...
5$/5euro for one year is not much.
I complain about "only" 3000 pokemon which you can store. I have got 25 boxes full and i have never started to fully breeding or trainig them for online battles.
What will happen if i start? 3000 is so few.
@Bolt_Strike What is being subtracted here? Bank gives you the ability to transfer mons from g5 to g6, and it's future-proof, so we don't get an issue like with with g2 to g3. Hell, to transfer from 4 to 5 needed a separate game system.
