Mewtwo is one of the Pokémon series' most popular legendaries. A powerful psychic type with an interesting and rather tragic background, fans have come to revere the Genetic Pokemon. While Mewtwo was popular enough back in the early 2000's to earn itself a coveted slot on the roster of Super Smash Bros. Melee, it was “replaced" by Lucario when Super Smash Bros. Brawl came around, much to the chagrin of some fans. With Mewtwo's impending return to the series as DLC in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, one must ask the all important question: will there be an amiibo? The answer is yes, sort of.
Emerging from the depths of a “smoke-free, pet-free college dorm" comes this one of a kind Mewtwo amiibo. Crafted from an old Mewtwo toy, a gutted amiibo base and using the Mewtwo NFC chip from the limited Pokémon Rumble U range of NFC toys, this DIY amiibo looks surprisingly official. The seller even went to the lengths of creating a faithful representation of what a Mewtwo amiibo box would most likely look like. Up for auction right now on eBay, the toy has a little less than two days left and the bidding is already at over $250, at the time of writing.
It's important to note, for anyone that hasn't realised, that this won't function as an amiibo - it's simply a glorified Pokémon Rumble U toy, nothing more.
Though there's a good possibility that there will be an official amiibo when Mewtwo gets patched in this Spring, this is still a certainly unique alternative for those who just don't want to wait that long to get an interactive Mewtwo toy.
Will you be keen to pick up a real Mewtwo amiibo if Nintendo releases one?

Awesome, I do hope they release a Mewtwo Amiibo. He is coming to Super Smash Bros soon through Club Nintendo DLC
If an official one comes out it'd be cool to see if it worked.
I'll stick with the real one
Ain't this an infringement? Using the brand "amiibo" and making money out of it? Plus it's not official Mewtwo amiibo.
Why don't they add a patch to Pokemon Rumble U and Pokemon OR AS, X&Y to have Pokemon Amiibos unlock interesting versions of that Pokémon?
Should have added a number, like all Amiibos have. Number 150 would be perfect.
And Nintendo will make a worse looking version of this Mewtwo figure for the actual thing.
I'm looking forward to seeing the actual one, just to see which one looks better.
@MetalK9
What makes you say that? The Amiibo they have created all look really good and detailed to me....
So I assume this "amiibo" gives you a playable Mewtwo in Pokemon Rumble U? Regardless of its actual functionality, it looks pretty nice. I hope Nintendo does make a Mewtwo amiibo once he's in Smash.
FYI, this is not an old Mewtwo toy. It's the Tomy one and is widely available. Mewtwo is confirmed for Sm4sh already so his amiibo is pretty much definite. Why anyone would want to pay in excess of $250 for a $5 toy in an amiibo box astounds me, especially when the amiibo will probably be out for Summer.
Edit: It would be just as easy to make any Legendary Pokémon into an amiibo. All you need is a spare amiibo stand and the toy. For instance, I could go to Toys 'R' Us and pay £3.50 for a Deoxys in the same series and simply stick that on an old base. Hey presto, Deoxys amiibo.
Cool creation. I'm still thinking about getting the actual one when it hopefully arrives...
While it's not worth $250 I like the creativity. The PRU Mewtwo is going for $30 on eBay and that Mewtwo figure is probably worth about $7. And if you're 1 of those people who likes collecting and displaying things I could see wanting this.
Looks cool. I wonder how the back looks, just to see if there's any artwork there.
If it was an official amiibo, I would buy it (at msrp). Than again I'm planning to get all the Pokémon amiibo, so that was a given.
@Kat - Don't forget the $15 for the Deoxys PRU toy which is kind of what makes this cool, it will unlock something in a Wii U game. And considering some of the amiibo still only work in SSBU it puts this on par w/ them. If you can do it, might as well. We already own a PRU NFC figure and it's toy counter part, maybe I should make a go of it
"Super Smas Bros" on the box? That's a tad misleading, innit?
@MadAdam81 That's what I initially thought, until I bought a couple of amiibo from the US. Their boxes don't contain the characters' series number, nor the 'Super Smash Bros. Collection' line. All they contain are the character's name and '6+'. Definitely prefer the UK boxes. This creator must've copied the US box's template.
@GH05T I think they will, maybe as an alternative way to unlock him/her (There's a female one in the 16th anime film) in the games too for those who don't have both versions or whatever...
Please STOP with the amiibo madness!
Soon the Gold & Silver amiibo's will be coming out & selling out then on eBay for thousands
I'm sure the REAL Mewtwo Amiibo will be the hardest to collect. He's my favorite Pokemon so, of course.
Please spend the money to charity. It's garbage.... it's garbage
When official Pokemon amiibo arrive, Nintendo should make a bunch of shiny ones...
Is this legal?
I wonder if the mewtwo amiibo will come with the dlc cuz it would be kinda useless otherwise.
I put a $500 bid on it, and I'm still losing. Hot diggity damn
@darthllama You were THAT guy? Why would you spend that much on this?!
@nintendouken I'm glad we get the UK ones in Australia.
@BensonUii There is a big difference from selling a one of a kind custom item from pre-existing toys (He had to pay for the Mewtwo figure, and Amiibo figure and the Mewtwo NFC figure for Pokemon Rumble) and trying to profit off of multiple sales of a completely new item (ex. 3D printed Mewtwo glued onto 3d printed bases with NFC chips containing copied information from the Rumble base). This is no different from reselling a used system with custom artwork on it.
@TechJunkie69
But he used the brand "amiibo" though. Which isn't official Mewtwo amiibo. Especially if this is mass produced secretly.
Can First 4 Figures create their own Nintendo figures and put it on an amibo's NFC base without permission from Nintendo and call it F4F amiibo? Or Good Smile company making their Nendoroid figures and slapping an amiibo's NFC in it without liscensing/contract from Nintendo and selling it as an "amiibo"?
I checked the sellers page, and ebay and it looks like the listing is gone.
@BensonUii I suppose I should clarify what I meant. A single custom design using existing items will typically not be an issue even if it technically falls under infringement. The 3d printing I mentioned was meant to imply actual production of multiple copies for sale, in which case Nintendo should stomp their foot down hard.
Looks nice for a fan-made version. But the bid war on this is just ridiculous.
And I still wonder how Mewtwo's Classic/Alt/All-Star trophies are supposed to work? Mewtwo is already available, so will they simply block the old trophies and add the new ones, or will they make additional trophies?
@TechJunkie69 I was about to ask about it, thanks for the clarification!
This is cool, but I have issue with the false advertising since the packaging says the figure is for Smash Bros. not Pokemon Rumble U.
You can create a fake box, slap Nintendo and amiibo official logos on it, and sell it without it getting taken down? Well I'll be...
EDIT: Oh, so it was taken down then? Good.
cool.
Regarding infringement: TechJunkie69 is correct, in my experience. A company has to defend its trademark to retain ownership, but it's doubtful a large company would notice if a college student made a custom amiibo and sold it for a couple hundred bucks. It looks like this listing attracted enough attention that Nintendo or some nebulous legal entity requested it taken down, or maybe the seller didn't like how high the number was getting. Anyway, I've sold custom toys where the creator made a unique package similar to this (featuring a clearly trademarked logo) and it's usually such a labor of love that a creator probably wouldn't get back enough profit to justify the work and effort and time, resources, etc. So I really like this amiibo, and I would totally bid on it, and probably spend a stupid amount to buy it, specifically because it is one of a kind.
