Many of us may consider ourselves to be pretty strong players in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but there are always decent odds of jumping into a For Glory online match and being well-and-truly humbled. This writer recalls playing the 3DS entry online in its early days, seeing Japanese characters in opposition names and immediately fearing the worst.
Of course, there are top-notch players all around the world, while some players in Japan will be just as mediocre as any other - nevertheless, a fresh video posted by Nintendo's Japanese channel does no harm to the idea that many Smash players in Nintendo's homeland really know what they're doing.
The video below shows matches from Jump Festa 15, a huge convention held in Japan towards the close of 2014. There's some fantastic action and technique in these two face-offs, with some clever use of items also thrown in.
Check out the footage and let us know if you could hold your own in these matches.

Wait why are items on?
The one playing Sheik is awesome.
Even if the items were on, this was actually enjoyable to watch.
I've always hated how good Sheik is... so fast, impossible to hit.
The Sheik player's pretty good! I like the chain-grabs at the beginning. I wish the Ike player didn't roll so much, though.
I don't know about the whole tournament, but those in the video are just above average,
What is this, Ike VS Sheik, who does that xD
My fave and main is Ike and he can't even hit Sheik on his first life. lol
I was hoping for Ike to make a comeback and win!
Noob Ike. Doesn't Aether often, should counter a couple times at least, doesn't Quick-Draw enough and can't Jab.
@PvtOttobot
Yeah, complete opposites.
All right! A tournament with items on! I wish there were more open minded tournaments for smash sushi as stamina, fast, etc.
The second match was terrible. That Ike guy was so bad and Sheik was good. I might be able to take them all out with my Link... or not! They're really good (except Ike)
Um, I've seen better. And that's without even taking the items into account.
I still enjoyed that
The only good player there is the Sheik and you can tell right away by the way she attacks. Everyone else is average.
@shinokami - Well first, she doesn't move by herself. The player is probably a guy. Second, It seems pretty average to me. I see a lot of that game style. But you gotta remember that Ike player was making Sheik look pretty good.
@MetalK9 well first I specified the characters way of moving meaning I didn't target the player's sex but the character's.
Second yeah i bet she is pretty average according to you, no question the Ike was terrible but either you think you are incredibly good or you are, who knows?
@BLPs When did playing well and having fun become mutually exclusive? Or when did an observation become a mandate?
All I saw was a sever ammount of character unbalance.
It seems that everyone hates matches with items, wonder why? what the hell...
I finally haven gotten a consistent win rate around 80% on online for glory 1v1 matches!
The game can be pretty exhausting as is though. I can't even imagine how intense playing professional matches are!
I thought this was professional. Then I realized items were on....
They're okay
@BLPs Well, if you want to play well, then there ARE things you should do. If all you care about is having fun, and winning doesn't matter so much, then it doesn't matter how you play.
I rather like items on. If you know what you're doing you can play around them. Not to mentioning its more fun
Remember, you're not really playing smash until it's Fox only, no items, final destination
@BLPs This is a Japanese tournament, so we should be expecting people to win and hopefully be good at the game. That Ike barely grabbed, used tons of dash attack approaches, ledge attacked too much, didnt tech, failed to fast fall, etc. I'm not saying I'm much better at smash than him, but this was definitely no pro.
No one in the video was a ''pro''. That Sheik in particular gets praise, but you can find a buttload of Sheik players in For Glory that play like him or better, and it's still not impressive.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'd like to see a fight between actual top Japanese players. I mean, this can't be it.
Get outta here ya butt!
That one kid made Ike look bad haha. Other than that these guys were pretty okay. The Sheik player was a little above average though
A tournament at Jump Fiesta? Chances are it'll be like a tournament at Anime North for Smash; open to the public and no professional players (then again my little brother did mention a professional Canadian Starcraft II player showed up for an Anime North tournament the last time he went).
Ike vs. Sheik was a pretty good match, that person using Sheik was way too good.
Ike was pretty bad, Sheik was pretty good, the other ones where decent.
