In Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate felyne characters, the quirky walking cats, were NPCs that added some comic relief and minor assistance away from the complex web of crafting, combining and hunting. In the upcoming Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, however, they take the place of miniature warriors - the Shakalaka - as your colleagues on the hunt, helping you gather resources and take down big beasts.
Branded as Palicoes this time around, you can equip them with special armour and weapons, and they can be customised to assist in various ways when in a tough battle; a range of wacky Nintendo and Capcom-themed outfits for them have been revealed in recent months. You can also have multiple Palicoes helping you out at once, which seems to replicate the strategy of the Shakalaka duo and their masks from this title's predecessor.
Capcom's released a handy video explaining how these will work, which you can check out below. Are you looking forward to this release in Q1 / Spring 2015?

Ugh, I just now realized that Palico is a pun.
@Squid Calico pal. It's better than most puns I've heard.
For someone who loves both Monster Hunter and cats this looks awesome! Can't wait for this game! will MH4U still have those annoying cats that steal stuff from you?
Anyone who still hasn't checked out MH3U, it's currently 16$ on the eshop in N.A.
I cannot wait for this game. Seriously, I haven't been this excited for a game in a long time.
Ahhh snap... It's getting close to release time!
It's been about a year since I was binging out on MH3U, but that's going to make it even better because I'll have to re-develop all those skills again, re-learn the crafting tables and monster weaknesses. That's the funnest part! Well, short of that moment you finally kill/capture your monster. That's the funnest part.
I JUST WANT A RELEASE DATE!!!
Kitten Mega Man is adorable.
Hell yeah didnt think id be but im excited!
The video made it sound like felynes joining you on your quests is a new concept.
But it's great to see they expanded on them. I much prefurred felynes to those...shakalaka....things whatever they were
Still only a "Early 2015" TwT
That's actually a heafty amount of gameplay! And the graphics have certainly improved since the early days!
I'm excited the AI of npc companions looks improved! I'd like a bit more depth in my companions as the shakalaka's felt a bit plug and play.
That moment when the felyne catapults the player into the air is particularly interesting! Here's hoping it's manually asked for on touchscreen than random!
WOw this just brought the hype factor up 90% for me!
Didn't PEGI stop using that rating sign (the black and white one) in 2009?
The latest mews on a release date is February 21st alongside New 3ds. (that's my guess anyway lol)
"Felyne characters, the quirky walking cats..."
It's actually quite normal for cats to walk, it's a lot more rare to see them swim or fly.
Will the addition of fighting kitty partners make the game a little bit easier? Had a PSP game back in the day and I was so terrible at it. I lost my 3DS though, so I guess it wouldn't matter anyway.
@Donjwolf
I don't plan on playing with others, so I think this is a great feature for soloists like me and makes the game more appealing (so long as its reasonably balanced of course).
