One of the first retail releases on Wii U in 2015 will be Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, at least in North America and Japan, which will bring its brand of stylus-controlled rolling gameplay to the system; its clay-based look and animation has certainly caught the eye.
Nintendo took the opportunity, on Christmas Day, to spruce up its official website for the game and release an extensive new trailer for the Japanese market. It's highlighted that there'll be 28 main story levels, along with plenty of collectibles and chests in the form of trophies and audio tracks.
The footage in the trailer is particularly interesting to watch, as we see more features and environments than ever before. Four player multiplayer looks invaluable, as extra players indulge in traditional platforming as Kirby rolls around. There's footage of amiibo right at the end too, in addition to clips on the official website, which show that the current and upcoming Kirby, King Dedede and Meta Knight figures give the pink ball a fresh look and expanded abilities.
This is set to hit North America on 13th February and 22nd January in Japan; the launch price in Nintendo's homeland is 3700 Yen - around $30 - which pegs this (unsurprisingly) as a budget retail release.
Check out the footage below and let us know what you think.

Game looks fine but being forced to always look at the gamepad is what kills this for me. I want to enjoy the clay graphics in HD!
And Europe?!? This is set to be my first Kirby game unless the Kirby VCs goes 50% off.
"SUUPAAA RENBOOOOOOOO"
Heh.
So everything the amiibo does is give Kirby a mask or a hat or a powerup, or did i maybe miss something?
If that is the case i think they did it right, amiibos should be more like bonuses in other games, while Smash Bros is the main amiibo game. That's what i think anyways.
@BensonUii Europe don't get this until after June (2nd half 2015) so price info will probably come much later.
@Tsurii897 That Yoshi game is great! Super underrated, imo.
I missed Canvas Curse, so this'll be a lovely way to bring in the new year. Ooh that claymation. (I feel kind of like a clay ball after that big Christmas feast.)
@sketchturner Exactly mythoughts. I love Kirby, I love the graphics, but for me the gamepad is at its best when its complementing the big-screen gameplay, not being the focus of it.
@DiscoGentleman That's good to hear. If that's the case, I might get this one. That incredibly beautiful box art is alluring enough as it is.
Nintendo of Europe hating Kirby as usual. Making us wait longer for no reason.
@sketchturner No one is forcing you to look at the GamePad. When you get used to touch-only games and "master" them on DS (Metroid Hunters, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks) you don't need to stare at the touch screen at all.
@Grumblevolcano
Whaaaa? That long? But why? I guess no Kirby then. I could live without it. And just when I think of getting one, it's being delayed in Europe. Great.
Looking better each time I see it! Not sure if it's a must-buy yet.
Looks nice! This may be my first Kirby game!
In terms of amiibo unlocking things like costumes, do you just need to touch the amiibo to the gamepad once for the content to be available every time you play or do you have to initialise it every time on start-up? And does it matter if an amiibo is already being used for a different game when unlocking content - eg. if I take the Mario amiibo I'm using in Smash, can I also unlock the content on MK8 without losing the data?
I'm firmly 'on the fence' about this one! I've never really got into the Kirby franchise in the past but love the art style of this one . It all comes down to gameplay mechanics now and this could go either way!?!
Captain Toad was also 3,700 yen in Japan, so the game will be $39.99 here.
Looks fantastic. I don't care about looking at the gamepad. Games look really good on the gamepad screen. I don't have to have "official HD status" to enjoy a game, especially when it's just one game that's unique and different.
@Sakura The unlocking of elements in game don't use the amiibo memory, so you can use them for unlock stuffs in multiple games without worring about their level in Smash. Hard to say if this new Kirby game will just unlock the costumes or power up Kirby everytime you tap the amiibo, but regarding the games already out, like Mario kart and Hyrule Warriors, once you tapped an amiibo the contenent is unlocked permanently and you don't need the amiibo anymore for access it.
If it's $40 or less I will definetly buy it. Just because of it's original gameplay and clay graphics. This will be my first official Kirby game.
I like how Nintendo is releasing games at different starting retail. I love capt toad, but it's not a $60 game. I'm not s huge Kirby fan, but it's tough to say no when I know it's going to be a good game, totally worth $30.
@BakaKnight According to a NeoGAF user, one of the Japanese videos says an amiibo power-up can only be used once per level and day.
@sketchturner i never thought about that. maybe you'll be able to have a indicator on the tv
If this is $40, it will be a day 1 purchase for me. It looks great.
look at 3:33 those look like amiibos for this game.
Kirby games have always been too corny and boring for me but kids will enjoy it.
hmm... still doesn't look that appealing to me. Maybe when I see it in a $10 bin. Not really a fan of the auto play drawing style.
@creeprtrainer52
they talk about Amiibo in the video later so I doubt those are Amiibo.
Kirby Canvas Curse was a solid game and this looks to be even better. At a $30-$40 then its a day 1 purchase for me.
@creeprtrainer52
those aren't amiibo, just in game medal/achievement stuff. Only King, Meta, and Kirby will have functionality.
I've always loved Kirby games ever since I was a little kid and this one looks great, very beautiful. I love the art style! It's nice that it's a budget price too and that I already have a Kirby amiibo.
$30 would be the perfect price to lure me in. In terms of gameplay and fun I'm sure it'll be worth the money even at $40, but being limited to the stylus would make it a tough decision at that price.
i prefer this over all boring platformers. seems like an original title
Thirty dollars?!
That's cheaper than most 3DS games! Wow...
$30? I may pick this up sooner than I'd expected.
Definitely not my type of game, but I never really cared for Kirby.
I really enjoy Canvas Curse so I will definitely enjoy this one too.
This game needs to have a wiimote option to play without the gamepad. Just saying.
Good game experience for cheap price. This game is now on my most buy list.
Well now I've got that excuse to get all the Kirby Amiibos
Wasn't that keen at first, but this looks actually not that bad now, amiibo functionality has made me want it now.
SUPER RAINBOW!
While I love the art style, even if this game is only $40, that's still a bit much for me considering all the other games I'm way more interested in coming out next year. I won't be able to afford them all, so it's likely this one will get cut from my list. 28 levels of that type of gameplay is just too short for me to justify spending $40-60. There are $15 games on the eshop that have more levels than that.
Gonintendo had a retail listing for $40. I don't know which retailer it was though.
I don't have much interest in this game but watching the video does make me wish for a Kirby/ R-Type hybrid. Unfortunately, I can't get into stylus controls. Even Phantom Hourglass felt like a chore to me.
Such a gorgeous game, although I still can't figure out why they went with the most generic boring and slightly weird looking flat-on shot of Kirby on the box art:
https://sickr.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/kirby_and_the_rainbow_curse_na_box_art_small.jpg
Showing Kirby at a wee bit of an angle or something would have just been a bit nicer. Gorgeous game though, so hopefully that image of Kirby on the box doesn't kinda undersell how gorgeous and appealing the actual game is. That was be a major booboo.
I LOVE WHAT I SEE!! ME WANT!!! NOW!!!
They haven't localized the trailer yet have they? :c
"..which pegs this (unsurprisingly) as a budget retail release."
I haven't been following this game much so can someone clarify this for me? Why is Rainbow Curse unsurprisingly a budget release?
Really sucks that the European release for this one happens like half year later. Nintendo of Europe is insane.
Nothing says Day 1 better than 4 player for $40. My kid bought Return to Dreamland used for $50 to play by himself - I tradrd it in after he and jhis brother had finished the main storyline.
We just finished playing Rainman Legends and the multiplayer levels w/ Murphy really eete a team efgort that look a lot like this game. This should keep us busy for winter break.
Looking forward to this and loving the artstyle. Also multiplayer! that's always great news.
@sketchturner If you happen to find other people to play with you, you can see the tv.
@kokirii Because it's a follow-up to a DS game? Because Captain Toad was at $40?
Looks incredible.
This game is due January 22nd!!???
looks like I'm buying king dedede Amiibo and will attempt to track down meta knight...
All I want to know is why it's coming to Europe so much later? Wouldn't be a problem without region locking.
Looks fantastic, Not absolutely sold on the gamepad stylus integration though. But if it is on sale prettttttty cheap in general, I might jump on it.
This game looks amazing! Though I'm disappointed that unlike Canvas Curse, this one doesn't have copy abilities. Speaking of which Mass Attack was too frustrating to even call it a Kirby game due to its replay value so I hope that this game isn't even that close to mass attack.
@Artwark
What? Mass Attack was great!
So does amiibo just stick a wee hat or mask on kirby?...
@YoshiTails No.
Looks good. Reminds me a little of Epic Yarn, which for me was one of the best Kirby games.
@Captain_Gonru - I think they finished Epic Yarn Christmas Day They do still go back to it, though not so much since we repurchased RtD, and it is responsible for 1 of the most used weird lines in our home "camel sofa" from those 2 guys that used t play videogames on the Nintendo channel on the Wii.
I'm looking forward to this and Yoshi. Probably moreso Yoshi as I'm a big LBP fan, but both should bring us hours of quality family game time.
@RainbowGazelle hey! What's the reason for that? Is it because Europe has so many languages? Ratings? WTH?
@rjejr I like your comments (even though I disagree on occasion)! I too am a LBP fan, Not great at it... But it is fun with friends.
Want to pre-order but Amazon and Best Buy still have it listed at $60. I know Amazon at least has the pre-order price guarantee thing, but just in case I'm waiting it out, anyway.
Looks fun but don't know how long it will be fun I'll still probably get this
@Platypus101 - "even though I disagree on occasion"
Mostly everyone on here disagrees w/ me most of the time. Agreement doesn't lead to lively debate though.
@Justaguest
And yet it's really not an original title, as it's a sequel to a game previously made for the DS.
I love Kirby and all, but I have no interest in this. Also, The Order 1886 comes out a week after this, and I'll have to save for that instead.
for 30 bucks ill deferentially pick this up
