When the Game Boy Advance library started to arrive on the Wii U Virtual Console, some franchises and titles will have immediately leapt to the top of quite a few wishlists; with the relatively recent success on 3DS of Fire Emblem: Awakening, we suspect that the first entry from the GBA era — simply titled Fire Emblem — would have been one of those games.
Though it arrived in Europe back in August, it's taken a little longer to arrive in North America. If Nintendo of America's website is correct this'll finally arrive in this week's update on 4th December, however, priced at the standard $7.99; for fans of turn-based strategy and master developers Intelligent Systems, that's very good news indeed. We gave it a glowing recommendation, too, awarding 9/10 in our review.
As an extra bit of information NES title Lode Runner is also due this week. We do recommend a little caution with both of these release dates, however, as they sometimes prove to be wrong (ironic considering they're on Nintendo's official website) — when it comes to Fire Emblem, however, perhaps a bit of anticipation is worth that slight risk.
Are you keen to jump into this predecessor in the Fire Emblem series? Let us know.

Finally! I bought it on the Japanese eShop since I was tired of waiting and it was on sale, but I'll gladly pay for it again.
I also have the GBA cart, but unfortunately it broke so it won't save anymore...
I won't be buying because I'm actually in the middle of a playthrough of the GBA cart now, but I'm glad it's now available for those who want it.
Warning to those who have only played Awakening: Not only is this a bit archaic compared to Awakening, but you'll probably also find a much harder as well. Fun, but unforgivable and frustrating. The way Fire Emblem should be.
Cool. I love this game.
It's only a couple years late and on the wrong console, but I guess that's ok. I still have my cartridge so I won't be downloading until it's released on a portable system. Still a must play game if you haven't had the chance though.
I struggled to get into the Fire Emblem but considering this will have save states I might give it a shot
YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just found my old GBA copy of this the other day. Cool to see this is available digitally as well
I'll be buying this tomorrow. I still haven't started FE awakening but this will be a good prepper for me..of course I said the same thing about advanced wars..haha
That's awesome! I'll have to get it.
@burninmylight It will be too easy because of save states
I plan to abuse the heck out of them
Sweet, now I can finally complete my collection of localized Fire Emblem games! I just wish I could download it on my 3DS instead, it was a handheld game after all. Maybe one day...
Thanks NOA.
there was a fire emblem(nes) games released on the 3ds virtual console can we get that one over here in the US
Got Fire Emblem Sacred Stones on 3DS (Ambassador Program), Shadow Dragon on DS, and Fire Emblem Awakening on 3DS.
So glad this is one I don't own yet. And yes, save states will make this game playable to the MAX! I don't feel the need to impress- there is no shame in the virtual save.
Here's hoping this makes it easier to track down a real GBA copy once the digital release comes out. This is a fantastic little game, and well worth playing on any system.
Think we'll get a release of Binding Blade?
I will buy it right away, but it'll have to wait for me to finish advance wars.
I've been kind of obsessed with Awakening recently so this is pretty good news! I'd been wanting it too!
@JaxonH Hey you have all the same ones as I do! (including having Sacred Stones as an ambassador game. Did that make it your first Fire Emblem like it did mine?) Although I really wish I could find the Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn for a reasonable price...
Yes! Cries
I still have yet to play Awakening despite a copy of it is sitting on my shelf right now! I am really not sure what I am waiting for...
Indeed, finally. Hopefully Golden Sun 2 and Donkey Kong Country will be soon to follow.
Fantastic. I still have my cartridge, but I think I'll probably pick this up anyway. Hopefully we get sacred stones eventually.
I have it on my 3ds already no biggy. Great game though get it if you don't already have it
Hey wit this is different then the one on that ambassador program?
I've never played it before,I'll get it
@rferrari24 We got Roy in the new Smash .
@River3636 Yes, this is a different game, better than Sacred Stones IMO.
@WaLzgi
I completely forgot about save states! I abused the heck out of them for Super Metroid. Now I'm thinking about getting it for Wii U just for hard mode!
@River3636
Yeah, I was always jealous of people who already had it on 3DS. I'm glad they're fianlly releasing it in NA so I can just buy it .
If you have awakening i suggest you play it first since fire emblem is more difficult.
Nice, I'll be sure to get this. I really loved this game and I liked the Lyn character. I still wish Lyn was playable on the new Smash, maybe next time.
Not big on RPGs. Still waiting on you-know-what.
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Stop it, Nintendo! Stop releasing all the good VC games DURING THE HOLIDAYS WHEN I ALREADY HAVE TOO MANY GAMES COMING OUT!!! DX guess I'm holding off on this one, as tempting as it is.
I mean, I have the cartridge but I sorta want to abuse save states...
I love this game so much, but not quite enough to buy it again when I already have a perfectly functional GBA cartridge that I've beaten twice.
Sigh...still waiting for my friend to return my cartridge to me.
@yokokazuo Do you own a japanese Wii U or is there a work-around that? I own a PAL Wii U and would love to buy from both the NA and JAP eshop. Googled around abit to no avail.
Thanks in advance :>
Is this the same Fire Emblem that came with the 3DS Ambassador Program?
This is timely. I just finished like half a dozen CN essays for VC and wrote "1st party releases are slow and often poor/unpopular games" for all of them.
@invictus4000 Nope, that was FE8, this is FE7.
@R_Champ
It's a different game. This is the first Fire Emblem on the GBA while the Sacred Stones is the last one. Now I want the Sacred Stones too on the Wii U!
@Sonicman The Roy jokes will never end it seems, still Mewtwo is a start for Roy maybe coming back
One of the games I've been waiting for to come to the VC. I played my first FE game, Sacred Stones, when it was released as a 3DS Ambassador game. After playing through it, I've been craving some more FE, and the very first FE game (released in the US), has been near the very top of the list to play.
Still need to pick up Fire Emblem: Awakening as well.
Huzzah! I still have this on a physical cart, but digital will be nice. Now to just await and see if it shows...
This is much more punishing than Awakening ever was though, so watch out if you expect it to be a walk in the park.
@Arakune616 I have a Japanese Wii U. Unfortunately the region lock prevents you from playing and downloading games from another region.
45 minutes after Nintendo announced GBA games on the Wii U, I sold my unfinished copy of Fire Emblem for $35. Once a game comes out on virtual console, the sell price tends to drop- right now its around $18. I'll be picking up the VC version and its precious, precious save states as soon as it goes on sale...
YAY! finally!
Finally! I love this series.
Cleared this again recently. Very well made and brilliant as most of the fire emblem games proved to be. Amazing that this is getting to NA in U's VC soon
I guess spending years of frustration maxing out unit levels in arenas will be unnecessary now due to the lack of multiplayer. Also sad that we'll likely never see Sword of Seals in English...
