With Super Smash Bros. for Wii U just around the corner, we reckon now's your chance to get in some practice with the terrific Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS before taking your brawling skills to the big screen. Today, Nintendo has announced the latest patch for the 3DS version, aiming to solve various balancing issues and improve your overall experience. Perfect timing!
While the specifics of Ver. 1.04 have not yet been fully detailed, expect the usual tweaks and improvements to be made, specifically in relation to game balance. It's also said that the patch will “fix various problems to make the game more enjoyable to play".
It's all good stuff, but keep in mind that those who download Ver.1.04 won't be able to play locally with anyone running lower versions. Additionally, there's an unfortunate side-effect in that replays saved prior to downloading the update will no longer be available for playback, so are effectively lost once you install the patch.
Avoiding the patch will naturally lock you out of online play, so we suggest biting the bullet and saving all new replays to impress once the update rolls out!
Let us know what changes you notice once this hits.

Hope it fixes the 136 ban
Just hope they release detailed patch notes this time
Solid.
I guess that means goodbye to the giant Yoshi glitch and more than likely a Little Mac nerf.
Noo, my replays... :c
@Grumblevolcano Pretty sure Little Mac's side b nurfs him enough
Are replays seriously gone because that is literally BS.
Wait... this will delete my replays?! Nuts. I guess I'll do a shaky cam recording with my phone to save them. I have a couple golden moments saved there that I want to keep.
At least I know beforehand that this update will kill my replays so I have a way to preserve them ahead of time.
Inb4 Little Mac spammers.
Seriously though, anybody who thinks that Mac is not OP just did not know how to use him.
I wish they were doing this to MK8.
I just got Smash 3DS literally like three hours ago, already having a blast, can't wait to learn a ton of fighters and grind and upgrade them all. I tried brawling online but ultimately only ended up playing two matches before moving back to Smash Run and Classic Mode because it kind of wasn't worth it with the lag. Is this something that varies from match to match or is it more or less something I'll have to live with? And could it be improved by this and coming patches?
My hopes are not high as Nintendo has never released a balance patch ever, but other than top tier nerfs I hope they buff Lucina.
Lucina (and Marth) basically have no way to safely approach (after forward air was nerfed into the ground) or apply pressure, have average to below average damage and are intentionally gimped to not be allowed to combo in most situations, and her sword is so short many melee characters are able to out range her.
Despite all these heavy nerfs (to Marth that were passed onto Lucina) Lucina's start up on attacks is still below average and lag at the end of attacks very large and has massive landing lag on almost everything. And Dancing Blade is just bad now, especially for Lucina who has no sour spot. Characters just get knocked out of it, like before 50% damage (depending on rage effect).
Nintendo why didn't you give us the ability to backup the replays before doing the update!?
I think the only nerf little mac needs is his neutral a combo. You can gI've at least 20 damage on that. Needs to be easier to esacape. I want the suicide attacks to get fixed so that bowser or Ganondorf die first and not the victim. Also I want the item lag cancel to get fixed as well.
I hope poor Olimar/Alph get a buff.
@NintendoMan94 It varies from match to match, depending on the player's Wi-Fi speed.
Guys, it's IMPOSSIBLE to backup those replays. The saved replay data is pretty much the button inputs and without the random element (as in, every items and such spawns at the exact same time it did). The game pretty much plays itself. Those old replays won't work with the patched game because the mechanics will change. In one case you could've KO'd someone, but after a nerf it's possible that the punch won't KO them anymore. Hell, even just making them launch a shorter distance would already break the flow of the replay.
An unfortunate side effect?! Go to hell, Nintendo. I'm not downloading the patch unless you actually explain to us why we have to lose our replays.
@CharleSketch Save 'em to an SD card and watch them elsewhere if that works.
@RainbowGazelle
I'm guessing because this update is going to change characters and issues with moves being different could cause errors in playback or something IDEK.
Deleting the replays is so the game doesn't get confused. You see, replays are not so much videos as they are actual recreations of the matches you played. What I mean by this is it's the computer going through the match in exactly the same way as you did at one point; like if you go to Solo and have two CPUs fight each other, but without the CPU element; the replays are prerecorded MOVES, not a prerecorded PICTURE.
So, with changes to how characters work, your 3DS would try to execute these prerecorded moves which, obviously, do certain % damage, have a certain launching ability, etc; but with the update these things would change, thus changing your replays.
The replays would not have to be deleted if this game was completed in the first place. Then there would be no need for updates and deleted replays. This is why Brawl and Melee are superior to this piece of trash game.
Welp, gotta start recording my replays on my phone. I wonder how drastic is the balancing, or if it's just something very little to notice.
Also this wouldn't be a problem if the replays were actually saved as a video and not some kind of file that tells the game to recreate. Brawl did this too. For example, if you were to play a Brawl replay from Project M, it would desync.
@TheNESLink Damn, I think you are right.
@Joruus_Cbaoth You can't really call Smash 3DS a 'piece of trash'. Melee and Brawl weren't exactly perfect in terms of balancing... Meta Knight, anyone?
Buff Kirby and Luigi, please. Nerf Greninja and Rosalina.
Little Mac is nowhere near the most OP character.
@Iggly The last one was too little to notice, since we could still use all our replays. However I'm banking on major changes this time around, enough to complete change the outcome of an identical situation, thus messing up replays to have different results since they just record button inputs.
Let me finally play online. Arrg, the connection errors are worse than at launch
I've read that, in the Wii U version of Smash Bros., after Rosalina loses a Luma, she has to wait about 13 seconds before another one appears. That's five more seconds than what's currently on the 3DS version(8 seconds). I'm going to guess that this could be one of the issues that needed balancing.
@Dinosaurs You must have terrible connection then, because other than some lag occasionally, my online experience has been fine.
@Yellowtails These are balancing patches though. Only the first patch was for a bug (For Glory Peach ban). Balancing patches are a good thing.
@DarkKirby The last patch was a balancing patch. It was a minor one, but it did change some things.
@SparkOfSpirit Yeah I can figure out Little Mac players usually. Rosalina not so much!
The only balancing issue I've seen is with the counter attacks and the character Ike. Ike was awful cheap in brawl and its the same here, fix it. Don't go screwing up Olimar or anyone else who was fine before, it at least took skill to use olimar in brawl, it doesn't take skill to spam the down B and basic B attack for Ike.
I hope they make the control pad usable for movement..my circle pad is not holding up well at all :S
@IceClimbers
Despite Nintendo claiming there were balance changes there has been no evidence of actual balance changes in the last patch.
The reason some people believe it'll be different this time is because the replays are breaking, since it's likely the replays are not videos and is the game reenacting the actions of the players.
Once you know how to deal with Little Mac, he's very weak in many ways, only good in certain match-ups. I probably haven't played against good Little Macs lately, but he's just easier to 'master' than other characters, there are some better like Lucario, Bowser, Yoshi... He's not an specific issue for the patch to fix. Anyway, it's good to see that they are still "balancing" some things, I wonder until when they will keep doing it.
@Dashtag Thanks for your wisdom, Good sir. I knew how the replays worked but I couldn't very much explain it properly myself.
@Yellowtails
I'm saying the game was rushed.
This makes it even more annoying that you can't send replays to a friend. This is already a baffling omission, and now my friends wont see how awesome I am before my replays and self esteem are lost forever.
As for Little Mac being OP, perhaps I've just been fortunate, but I've never been defeated by Little Mac online.
This is why they shoulda made the replays able to be taken off the SD card...
....You people overreact way too much.
i'll stick with 1.03 thank you, espcially of snapshots, replays and stuff are unavailible after update, and i cant play with people with lower versions
@xj0462 you'll be locked out of online then. Plus if higher versions can't play with you, neither can you play with them.
Somebody got it right here. At least, I know that's how replays worked in Brawl, it takes wayyyy less space to save the sequence of button pressed than to save an actual video. When if the update changes even the most minor balancing issue, it could make a lot of the videos screwed up. People complaining, there is no way Nintendo can save your replays unless they didn't ever fix balancing issues like this. It would've worked if they saved the replays as actual videos, but that probably wouldn't have been wise for the 3DS anyways, given it isn't the most spacious of systems. Perhaps they could've let them be saved online but either way it's not and that would take a lot of work at this point, and likely would still mean you lose your current replays.
The patch affecting the game should be a different launcher but never the less I never updated my game and probably wont for a good while
It would have been nice if you could export replays as videos, but its not the end of the world. If your phone has a decent camera it should look surprisingly good. (Place the phone on some books or something to help keep it steady.) That's all folks!
@Joruus_Cbaoth wow, welcome to the wrong place to spout such things.. It's not like the game was "incomplete", they just let the players have at it and see what needs to be adjusted. If Brawl or Melee had the ability to be updated I'm sure they'd do the same to them..
Rosalina nerf please. She's the only OP character.
@LUIGITORNADO yes I agree!
I've noticed that Villager's tree hangs around for a shorter amount of time since the previous update, anyone else noticed this?
@Joruus_Cbaoth Didn't you say in another comment that this game had superior single player compared to Smash Wii U which I assume you haven't played?
Hope it fixes how ridiculously over powered little mac is
@AlexOlney OOOOOOOOOOHHHHH I await his reply.
Goodbye Wario Momentum glitch. You will not be missed. For those of you unaware:
https://vine.co/v/OAMg71Qga1m
So replay. Thing with smash is even if were to keep the V1.0.3 update data separate that may not help you with replays as the game goes into lockdown if you're playing on an older version (saves won't load until you are on the latest version).
Now Starcraft 2 for example has gone through loads of balancing patches and guess what, all replays work so it is disapointing the same couldn't be done here.
Shame, there are already issues with the game.
@ShadJV i dont play online
@Goginho It has no more issues than your average game. The only difference here is that they are actively fixing them with regular updates instead of just waiting until the next installment, which I would think people would be grateful for.
When does this patch actually happen?
@WreckItRyan The game will never support D-Pad movement. There would be no way for the D-Pad to register the difference between a tilt and a full press. At best, you'd have to double-tap for a smash, which would only hurt your D-Pad faster. My advice is to take it easier on your C-Pad - smashing lightly is easy if you practice it. Being stupid and forgetting to buy a warranty for my 3DS XL, and seeing all the busted C-Pads, I've learned to be careful.
Anyways, as for my hopes:
I hope Rosalina gets nerfed a bit. Not in her attacks, or her damage-dealing or anything like that, but I think Luma should at least take non-projectile damage. Link's Hylian shield blocks projectiles altogether, so I don't see why Luma can't act that way, but when you simply can't get close enough to Rosalina without only hitting Luma, but Lma can counter-attack, it makes Rosalina extremely hard to damage at all, let alone launch, unless Luma gets KO'd. I've learned to deal with them [rolling and suckerpunching], but I can see anyone playing Rosalina completely sweeping tournaments.
Little Mac is fine. His side-b, horrendous recovery, and extremely light weight [I'd argue his weight and launchability in Smash being somewhere between Pikachu and Game & Watch, I've easily launched and KO'd some at less than 40% in For Glory] all make up for his ridiculous strength. Plus, so many people play as him because it's easy to do so, that he's become easier to deal with.
I saw someone say Greninja is OP, but he's fine. Easily launched and lacking good, non-smash launching moves. He's just speedy is all.
I hope ZSS doesn't get nerfed at all, with her being my personal main online, but I can see how she would be, with how easily her down-b can launch, even though it's extremely difficult to hit with - I've yet to master spiking someone with it. Her up-b is probably what would take a hit, if anything. It's not hard to hit with properly and launches most characters by about 80%.
I'd say everyone else is fine, really. I can't see why any characters should be buffed or nerfed aside from the aforementioned, but maybe others have different opinions?
@Starwolf_UK
The reason they can't save the replays is that they're not actually recorded video. It's recorded button inputs that are hashed out in a simulation. If they make changes to the amount of power a smash attack has, then the new version of the game will change the replay as well. A smash in the replay may not KO like it once did, and it would throw the entire replay out of whack.
If it was actual, recorded video, it would take up a TON of SD card space. Video files in most formats are expensive in terms of data. You wouldn't be able to save many matches without overloading your card.
I think that the replay issue is a sign that some major changes to at least some characters are imminent.
@GoshDangTravino You did read the "Now Starcraft 2 for example has gone through loads of balancing patches and guess what, all replays work so it is disapointing the same couldn't be done here." part, right? I am perfectly aware of the replays being macros for both Smash and Starcraft 2. My point was Blizzard figured out how to keep obsolete data for old replays to still work so I am disappointed the same care wasn't given for Smash.
What does OP mean?
@Starwolf_UK
Having never played Starcraft or any of the games in that series, I simply didn't know that. But Starcraft and Smash are two completely different titles and they both probably work very differently with the style of gameplay they both are. I don't know much about how it works on a technical level but I imagine that to be the case. I dunno, the replays don't mean much to me. The only good one I have is getting 4000+ yards with Olimar on the Home Run Contest. But, I do feel for those who have some they love showing off or reliving themselves. I don't think Nintendo didn't care, as it is a feature they made sure everyone knew about, but maybe it just couldn't be done? Maybe it'll be explained?
@ajr12388 little mac isn't that hard to beat. My strategy is to use a move that will get him in to the air, wait for his counter to time out and immediatly attack in that window. Never fails for me at the least.
I hope this is one of the last updates (excluding updates that add content), because it fills up my SD-card! But who am I fooling, there will be many more (I fear).
