Just recently four Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS HOME Themes were released in Japan, each adopting a different style reflecting the game, limited edition hardware and general artwork. We hoped they'd come to the West and, for Europeans at least, that day has come.
Although they weren't listed in the official download update, European 3DS owners should have a Notification alerting them to the themes being available. They cost £1.79 / €1.99 each and, to compensate for the limited previews in the Theme Shop, below are the videos released by Nintendo of Japan that show them in action.
There are more surprise choices, too, with four Nintendogs + Cats themes available; these are Golden Retriever, Shiba, French Bulldog and Toy Poodle variations.
At the time of writing the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS HOME themes haven't appeared in North America, but we'll keep our eyes peeled. Are any of you in Europe planning to pick these up?

Surprisingly, I like the second one the most, if it comes to NA I'll have to consider it.

DAYUM! Well, I'm going to wast about £8 of money on these themes.
I've got my son a 2DS for Christmas with Super Smash Bros. I intended to download a theme too for fun so I'll get one of these on Christmas Eve, got my daughter Yoshis New Island for her 2DS using the free game promotion and I'll be downloading a theme for her too on Christmas Eve for a bit of extra fun! Think they're a great idea and easy extra revenue for Nintendo

Too bad there is still not a blue one. I like the first one and the last one. I have $5 eShop credit so if/when they come to NA I might pick them up.
I want the second one, but don't like the song (as theme song). I would like the first one, coloured, if Link wasn't that big.
Considering the new 3DS LL has been outselling the new 3DS by a large margin in Japan - apparently the Japanese weren't as fond of faceplates as Nintendo had hoped - I wonder how much money people are really spending on these things? They're nice, but stuff like this always strikes me as something that should be covered in a companies advertising budget, like the free Sonic Boom theme last week. Buy 1 or 2 that you really like maybe, but how mnay themes does a person really need?
On the bright side - kudos to Nitnedo for letting you buy them. I don't own a PS4 or Vita but on PS3 you have to spend $5 on a credit card. There have been $1 games during PSN sales I haven't purchased b/c I didn't feel like spending $5 on them. And even a couple of $1.99 ones even though I have $2.07 in my account but a few cents tax means I have to add $5, so no buy. So Nintnedo got this right, buy whatever you want at any price and pay that price, no minimum. I keep my Sony Visa right next to my Gamepad, always at the ready. Still not buying these though.

I got the first one last night
I picked up the second one. Would've picked either the 1st or 3rd, but the second just has the better theme for a menu I think.
I got the 2nd and 3rd one, using the 3rd right now. Love how the sound effects change to the Smash one.
I would've gotten the 1st theme too but seeing Mario so short compared to Link and Pit is a deal-breaking nitpick for me.
Aaaaand once again, we get something last because NOA apparently has a hard time keeping up with the rest of the world these days...
No mention of NA. Typical Nintendo Life.

I am hoping that someday they make themes available for purchase on Wii U! Not too bothered about themes for ny 3DS unless it is a Monster Hunter 4 one, then I might bite!
@SanderEvers If they do that. Everyone would be able to recreate the existing themes for free.

i like the back grounds and all but i dont want to have to hear the smash bros theme the entire time when im on the menu. can we get the ability to change the music please.

They should really give at least one free to those that own the game.

I opted for the 4th one, I love the tiled graphic design with vibrant colours, and that use of the N64 character selection music.
@UnseatingKDawg you realize us in NA are getting SSB4 for Wii U first right? So, I home screen wait isn't a prob.

Anyway out if that, I would get one of these, but the Isabelle with town bulletin board for ACNL matched with my ACNL 3ds is very nicely fitting, do more themes may be a stretch for me.
It would either be between the third or fourth for me mainly due to the music.
I pre-ordered the Wii U version today, along with the Gamecube controller and adapter, and I've got some money for some amiibos. Going to the midnight launch next thursday night. Can't wait.
@BSFsontails1012: I realize that. But how many other things have we gotten first lately? We still haven't gotten any DS games on Virtual Console, no Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, and still no DKC trilogy on Wii U. Not to mention we ain't getting steelbook cases for the new Pokemon games, and we aren't getting the Majora's Mask 3D Special Edition. I just feel that all regions should be treated equally in time of release and incentives to buy, that's all.
I love that second one. If that comes to NA, I will definitely get it. I like the music with it.
I already bought the Link Between Worlds background but I don't like it as much as I thought I would. Something about the music with it is off-putting...Not sure what it is. Maybe I'm just used to mellower music when I turn on a game system. I regret buying that one.
I love the 2nd and 4th one better music (Smash's menu music is starting to grate)
looks nice but I don't buy themes, after all they are kind of pointless
They should make it so that when you buy a first party game, you get a free background of the game with it.
