We're now very close to the peak shopping season for 2014, and Nintendo will be throwing out major releases in a bid to secure major sales success for both Wii U and 3DS. For the Wii U much rides on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and the amiibo range, while on 3DS the main focus will be Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.
While Nintendo has already highlighted that pre-order trends for the new Pokémon games are out-performing last year's X & Y, some further positivity has come from Nintendo of America's statement that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U pre-orders in its region are at record levels for the home console — the franchise has always been a huge hit Stateside. Speaking to Bloomberg, NoA's President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime highlighted how this was continuing the positive momentum generated by Mario Kart 8 earlier in the year.
The launch of Mario Kart 8 has essentially doubled our Wii U sales year-on-year. Our expectation is that the sell-through for Smash is going to be very strong, certainly on par with what we saw with Mario Kart 8. We think the impact on hardware will be similarly dramatic.
...Consumers buy the hardware so they can play the software. When you have a robust library of games, that’s when consumers jump in.
In the video interview below, meanwhile, Fils-Aime discusses amiibo, Nintendo's aim to appeal to a wide demographic of gamers and the inevitable question about smart devices.

Let us know what you think of these Smash Bros. pre-order comments, and Fils-Aime's broader interview, in the comments below.
Thanks to all that sent this in.

I think releasing amiibo at the same time is a smart move
Hopefully, these strong future sales equal to strong hardware sales...
Lets see how it goes... I still believe this holiday season should be focus in bundles, with top hits and of course somes amiibo related. Example: Push the MK8 Bundle including a Mario and/or Luigi amiibo wisely price. That for sure will bring interest on the system, and the amiibo, which of course can address the attention to SSB Wii U.
Should have made a Smash themed Wii U like they did with Zelda!
What Reggie says: SSBU at record levels!
What Reggie's thinking: Oh crap no, Wii u is SO gonna fail!
I love this interview. Not only did Bloomberg (since I can't see her actual name) bring up positive notes that Nintendo gad bit also the struggles that were brought to light. She was very professional in her questions asking politely and not ribbing when discussing some failures that everybody knows Nintendo has going on. And Reggie amazing as usual.
I know this reporter was just asking general questions, but I hate it where they have valuable time with the COO of NA, and they ask such a generic question like, "What are your thoughts on smartphone gaming?"
We all know this answer cause it's been asked since 2011, when 3DS sales tanked at launch. I think a better question would have been, "Is amiibo your answer to shareholders who want to move to mobile? And how much of a positive impact do you think amiibo will have on Nintendo once it hits the market?"
I dunno, I just wouldn't waste valuable time on such generic questions we already know the answer to.
I just heard GameMania stores in the Netherlands and Belgium get 1 NGC adapter each....
They didn't make enough of those things....did they think Smash would crash and burn?
Well, I pre-ordered my copy. WITH the Gamecube adapter and controller. Party at my house!
@WaveWarlock Same xD
well I could see this being the best Christmas for the wiiu and a strong one for the 3ds with the games that are coming out for both systems should make a tempting buy in hardware and software.
Record sales like GTA5 sales or about the norm and a million or so. Records for Nintendo pre-orders are no where near other high profile games. Still it's nice to see and hear.
I hope Nintendo releases a last second WiiU bundle to help boost sales!
So much for it "bombing" or being a "flop" as some people predicted.
Nice. Wish he had talked up difference between gaming on a 3DS vs. mobile gaming as a starker contrast: deeper more satisfying experiences due to dedicated controls and games that aren't driven by ads or thinly veiled gambling with micro payments. Otherwise it sounded pretty good.
Really hoping Smash Bros. does some great business for Nintendo. It is amazing how much Mario Kart 8 turned around the general opinion on Wii U on the web at least. Derision has been replaced by some respect. Smash Bros has an opportunity to reach further. Zelda could be the clincher that makes the Wii U impossible to ignore and a console that won't be forgotten.
@aaronsullivan
I would say not only MK8 but also E3 helped Nintendo's image. I hope Smash and Amiibo help them too.
@sinalefa Yeah, you're right. Especially since I was targeting the effect it has had on web coverage. E3 was pretty fantastic and the treehouse presentations not only showed a surprising embrace of twitch-style broadcasting by Nintendo but what a great matchup it is: Nintendo games shine when you see them played better than screenshots and snippets. Their genius has always been in the gameplay itself and the graphics-tech gap makes it more important than ever to highlight.
The Wii U certainly turned around starting at e3. The Digital Event and Treehouse event were brilliant. Now they are reaping the benefits!
I'm super excited for Smash (pre-ordered for Wii U; already have 3ds version) and the games coming in 2015. I've also pre-ordered a couple of Amiibo.
I am nervous, however, about the way Nintendo is introducing Amiibo. Although Amiibo are going to have some functionality with existing (and near future) games, there currently isn't anything along the lines of Disney Infinity or Skylanders that allows people to use them in a "play set" manner. Being able to train them in smash, for example, is not as cool as adventuring with them in a Subspace Emissary-like adventure involving all of Nintendo's characters.
First impressions are everything, and I'm worried that the introduction of Amiibo without many interesting applications for it are going to turn people off, and that those people will stay turned off when Nintendo introduces something a little more interesting for them.
The "launch now and support more fully later" plan didn't work so well with the Wii U (although the transition to HD set things back a bit too then), and I'm worried that Nintendo's launch of Amiibo may share the same problems.
That said, I'm still getting them
I so wanted a Smash Wii U bundle this month!
Guess I gotta buy a Mario Kart 8 bundle. But I am still hoping for some Smash-ing news!
Although all these pre-orders is definitely good.
I do love Reggie's 'play it cool' attitude lol. Not that he has reason to be otherwise but, good interview.
Keep making great games Nintendo. I'm so glad they ditched the practice of shoehorning motion control into gameplay like they did with the Wii and stuck to creating great games with perfect controls.
Good for them.
The interview was good, but those charts showed some bad times for Nintendo.
Rather than dissing "boys" 18-34 (2:51 - FYI Reggie, 18-34 are men, not boys) how about telling the world that Wii U has the best pair of EXCLUSIVE games in Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 this holiday season, rather than talking abut Wii Fit? Maybe Nintnedo doesn't have the money to advertise, but here's Reggie on TV for free and he highlights Wii Fit over the games "boys want? This is why Nintneod sucks at marketing and Wii U doesn't sell.
And Reggie saying "boys" with such contempt can't help. Boys are the ones who buy the consoles Reggie, not 6 year olds, not girls, not moms w/ their cell phones or dads w/ their tablets, "boys" 18-34 will buy the majority of consoles this gen and then the rest of the family buys the games to play on them. But if you don't sell the console you can't sell the games. Or get 3rd parties to even put the games on your console. Missed opportunity. Maybe it really is all Reggie's fault Nintendo sucks at marketing.
@rjejr Hyrule Warriors GOTY 2014.
@Kogorn733 - "That said, I'm still getting them"
Liked everything you said - been saying the same thing for months - but that last line is all that really matters at launch - $.
They'll need a real amiibo-centric game for next holiday though, probably announced at E3 or a Jan ND. I've been hopeing since amiibo were announced and they told us no Subspace in SSBU that they would make it a separate game. It would basically be a 2D Skylanders, and we all know how much Ntinedo loves 2D. That or Nitnendo Land 2 where you can play as your amiibo, w/ less lousy single player motion controlled stuff and more Zelda, Metroid and Pikmin type games. It has to happen next year b/c amiibo may work well in SSBU but not Zelda, Starfox, Mario Maker, Splatoon, Yoshi or XCX. Pokepark Adventure games on Wii would also be a nice basis, the 2nd was similar to Skylanders. But after SSBU they will NEED an amiibo based game or sales WILL dry up.
@aaronsullivan - Thanks for the Clay Jam tip, my kid has been having a blast. Don't feel bad about him spending time on his tablet, he's just killing time until Pokemon, and he still plays SSB. He'll never go completely over to the dark side.
@rjejr
I disagree. Reggie was actually mentioning that they have experiences the other two don't have, that appeal to a different age/gender group and used Wii Fit U as an example. In that context I feel he chose the right game. However....
...What he should have said is something like "we have Mario for the kids, Smash for the boys, Bayonetta for grown ups, Wii Fit for older people" or something like that, highlighting their "6 to 66 demographic" with clear examples.
@sinalefa - Funny, you don't sound like you disagree. Everything after "However.." is what I said.
Also - "Reggie was actually mentioning that they have experiences the other two don't have"
HW and B2 ARE experiences the other 2 don't have, that's why I focused on them. And I haven't even asked you how B2 was b/c I can't imagine it's not good. And I know you haven't played HW yet but look around, it's fairly well liked. Both have to be better than Sony's PS4 1 and only exclusive DriveClub. And X1 only has Sunset Overdrive as an exclusive b/c Halo MCC is repackaged ports. So why is Ninteod keeping their pair of good Wii U exclusives such a secret?
I honestly feel at this point Reggie hates "boys" so much for always dissing his hardware that he doesn't even want them to buy his system or play his games, he thinks Nintedo's stuff is too good for them, they don't deserve to play with it. All their advertising is based on kids and families. He's cutting off his own nose to spite his face.
@rjejr
I disagree about the Wii Fit U example being wrong. I wanted to say "I somewhat disagree" or "I disagree slightly" but I felt it would look odd and did not write it.
Correct me if I am wrong, but your point was "Don't advertise Wii Fit, advertise HW and B2 instead" while my point is "Advertise everything you have, not just A or B"
Halo may be ports, but consensus is that it is a top notch remastering with tons of content and the bar to measure other remasterings. And they also have Forza Horizon 2 that was released not long ago.
@sinalefa - OK, your right, I would have preferred he left out Wii Fit U. Not b/c it's a bad game per se, but b/c Nintendo has spent the last 2 years trying to convince consumers that the Wii U is in fact a new console, not a Wii (I swear I sitll see things that say simply Wii w/o the U) and Wii Fit is probably the 2nd biggest game on Wii after Wii Sports. I'd say Just Dance is 3rd. (Nintnedo sold Mario's soul to sell 80m Wii consoles to the masses.) So I don't think using his free on air time to mention well known Wii game sequel is the way to go.
And what is a minor nit-picky thing, but Forza Horizon 2 is not an X1 exclusive, its also on 360. Just like LBP3 is not a PS4 exclsuive b/c is also on PS3. And Halo is still upgraded ports, just like WW HD was. So for me Wii U still has the best "exclusives" this holiday, unless HW and B2 come out on the Wii. And of course SSBU. (Sorry, I like, want and will get CaptainToad but I sitll don't see that game as a system seller, more a great bonus for those of us who own the console.) People NEED to buy a Wii U to play these exclusives, people who own a 360 or PS3 can play those other games w/o buying a new console. And 1 year into X1 and PS4, 2 years into Wii U I think selling the consoles is still what matters most. Despite what the media may have you think Wii U and X1 are still neck and neck. And how do you sell consoles? Exclusive games, not Fit U.
Would you be in such a rush to buy X1 if Wii or Wii U were getting Scalebound?
@rjejr
I'm not one to say mobile is the dark side. I even released a game on the App Store (iOS only at the moment) but the popular games on those platforms are often shallow time suckers that leave you with little satisfaction. The popular games on 3DS are much more interesting and rewarding.
There are some very cool mobile/tablet games that fit that platform better than 3DS like HearthStone, some board and card game conversions and some very unique and interesting games that are usually niche tastes and experiments: 10000000 stands out in my mind at the moment, Space Miner... but there's a big list but most of them don't blow up into super success.
@rjejr
I forgot that FH2 also appeared in X360. I would haven't used it as an example if I knew it. Same way I don't see LBP3 or TLOU as PS4 exclusives either. They are like the best version of an exclusive. Like Wii Fit U compared to Wii Fit
And of course Scalebound is selling me the One because no other console has it. If not for that, I would probably go with a PS4 (because it has Uncharted 4, another exclusive). I got my PS3 mostly for third party games not appearing on Wii, but I went with PS3 over 360 because of the former's exclusives. This time is the opposite, courtesy of Kamiya.
@rjejr I'm not at all sure that falling into that age range makes a boy a man.
@MoonKnight7 That's a good point. They really love to reiterate questions we already know the answers to. Your question, however, was much more interesting and something I'd actually like to know the answer to.
Has this woman ever conducted an interview? She can't talk...
Record preorders for a Wii U game isn't exactly an amazing achievement since the preorder totals really suck for most games. Still nice that there is a lot of buzz for the game, but the system needs a lot more juice going forward. PS4/One are selling more than double the consoles as the Wii U each week in NA/Europe. PS4 is outselling the U in Japan. Smash will help in the short term, but way too much catching up to do and not enough releases to keep any momentum up.
In other news, Bayonetta has sold just over 150,000 copies in North America and 63,000 in Europe. Hyrule Warriors sales have slowed to a crawl, but its total sales world wide has gone over 510,000 which is a healthy number. Smash U will obviously eclipse the lifetimes sales of both in its first week.
Was very happy with how Reggie talked there, especially how he defended Twitch. Nintendo really seem to be getting good at communicating with fans now, and as long as they keep it up they should see improved sales.
@noctowl - Why? What has Reggie done the past 2 years to instill confidence in you?
When I see Reggie I see a guy who has spent the last 7 or 8 years defending the underpowered Wii and Wii U consoles, defending the lack of third party games, defending the game delays, defending the total disregard for the "app" space. Defending, defending, defending. Defending his own job as Iwata was given power over him early last year.
https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii-u/iwata_named_nintendo_of_america_ceo
I just think Reggie has been on the defensive for so long he can't be on the offensive anymore. Whether he doesn't care or is burned or just doen't know how to I don't know, but I do know Wii had a huge lead over PS3 and Xbox360 last gen, and Wii U came out a year earlier and at a lower price than the other 2 next gen consoles and Reggie didn't capitalize on that very favorable scenario.
Are you familiar w/ the Peter Principle? Just b/c Reggie has a good job, don't confuse that with him being good at his job.
@rjejr
Reggie has always struck me as more of a goofball/ceremonial figurehead rather than an actual company leader. He always looks like a deer in the headlights and doesn't seem to be able to give clear and concise answers to most questions. I wouldn't be surprised at all to learn that he really doesn't have much power within the Nintendo heriarchy.
@Dr_Corndog - "I'm not at all sure that falling into that age range makes a boy a man."
No, probably not, but as somebody who is supposed to be trying to sell his system to men in that age range referring to them as "boys" w/ a tinge of disdain in his voice isn't helping.
@rjejr - Reggie, Nintneos real life VP of Everything.
@darthllama
Are these just counting physical sales or physical and eShop sales?
@rjejr "I honestly feel at this point Reggie hates "boys" so much for always dissing his hardware that he doesn't even want them to buy his system or play his games"
I wouldn't say that's how he feels, but if it is then oh well. The ones who are dissing the Wii U are probably the ones who will never buy it no matter what Nintendo does. For example, the Bayonetta 2 situation. Some people are actually angry at Nintendo for SAVING Bayonetta 2 from being cancelled and it being exclusive.
"All their advertising is based on kids and families"
Well, that's the market they aim for most. They make games that everyone in the family can enjoy, but here's a new advertisement that didn't have kids in it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFLFskTGFFA&list=UUGIY_O-8vW4rfX98KlMkvRg
"Reggie fls... Reggie fils ame? Reggie Fils-Amie."
@HypocrisyNews
I looked briefly and couldn't find it, but I'm pretty sure Nintendo put out a sales report for MK8 last month or in September, and in it they released the total sales number for the game, both retail and eShop, and I believe the download number was only in the low 100K's. eShop sales only make up a minuscule portion of purchases, so if Bayonetta 2 has only sold 150K at retail, I believe its a safe bet to say the game has only sold ten thousand or so copies in the eShop, if that.
@MikeLove
If those are accurate numbers then that's a shame. Bayonetta 1 & 2 are great games. Hopefully it will do more this holiday and Black Friday.
Reggie brilliant as always.
I defy my friends on Nintendo Life to speak more assertively and compose as deliberate a message as he is capable of sounding.
@SwaveSays
Haha thanks. I think it's important for a reporter to look into what others have said in the past, and to build questions on top of what is already common knowledge. It's ok if they want to briefly touch on it, but to ask such a softball question is a missed opportunity. This makes me believe they want to go the "safe" route, rather than asking them something that might make them slightly uncomfortable. It's a news reporter flaw that seems to be happening more and more, and I feel like I'm watching a show more than a news channel. Even if we wouldn't get a straight answer to my questions, and I doubt we would, I'd be happier if the reporter at least tried to ask.
Reggie might wanna 'leverage' a new word to use lol just kidding my body be so ready
@HypocrisyNews
Includes both physical and digital numbers together
@HypocrisyNews - "Well, that's the market they aim for most."
Then why save B2 and have HW made? I know they didn't make it but they basically licensed out Link and Zelda to a game they aren't exactly pushing. Why get on tv and talk about Wii Fit?
"Settle it in Smash" is one of the few things I think Nintendo has done right, everybody likes a sound bite. And that is a good commercial. 8 player couch should be easier to market than asynchronous gameplay. That other commercial w/ the amiibo was too much "Dawson's Creek" for me.
Maybe Reggie doesn't hate "boys", maybe he's just throwing in the towel and resigned to have lost that market. But I think they could try a little harder, or at all. MS is still trying w/ X1, PS4 is hammering them but they havne't given up yet. How about a Wii U bundle w/ HW and B2 instead of NL and SM3DW? Let the "boys" know you want them to buy your system. Maybe a B1/B2 and W101 bundle, call it the "Platinum" bundle. (good yes? @sinalefa) Everybody likes shiny metal. Having only a bundle containing SM3DW - a year old game, and NL - a 2 year old game - tells me they aren't trying to get anybody to buy a Wii U. Seriously, no SSBU bundle? How did that not happen? Wii U w/ SSBU, adapter, SSBU and a Gamecube controller, call it "Gamer" bundle. Make an effort.
I am literally eating chips/crisps (not quite popcorn) as I'm reading these comments. Riveting.
@rjejr "Then why save B2 and have HW made?"
I would say its because they're trying to appeal to that market a little more, who felt abandoned during the original Wii's generation. What I meant by "that's the market they aim for most", is they try to make consoles and games that everyone enjoy and enjoy together, like Nintendo Land or MK 8.
I think I know what you're saying. If Reggie has given up, he should still try and get that market back. I just used the Bayo 2 example because that just confirmed with me that some have this misplaced hate for Nintendo. For those angry about Bayo 2 are pretty much saying they would rather Bayonetta be dead than appear exclusive to a Nintendo system, and so I find it very unlikely they'll change their opinion about Wii U and will never buy one. Hopefully I'm wrong and games like Bayo 2, HW, Smash U, Xenoblade X, Devil's Third, and more will change their minds about Wii U.
@HypocrisyNews - I have no idea what Devils Third is, and I'm pretty sure it's not for me, but from the title it seems like 1 of those M adult games that Nintendo shouldn't bother doing if they aren't going to at least make an effort to win gamers back. Bundle bundle bundle.
@rjejr
Also, I think the NL and SM3DW are just their standard bundle for Wii U(and because I think NL still shows the potential of the Gamepad the most). I can't explain why we haven't gotten any special bundles for Bayonetta 2 or Smash Bros. though. I don't know what is going on at NoA.
Edit: Same way Europe got a special collector's edition for Bayonetta 2, but North America didn't. SMH
@rjejr Almost like B2, Devil's Third is being funded by Nintendo after THQ went bankrupt. Apparently it was revealed years ago for PS360, but I never heard about it until E3 2014.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yTldFe2m-A
@MoonKnight7 A lot of what Nintendo is doing lately is fairly uncharacteristic of typical Nintendo. So, I'm really curious if they're being influenced by investors to make differing changes or if this is them finally adapting.
Am I the only one bothered by the fact that Bloomberg were flashing Nintendo's financial and sales charts having a descending flow in the past five years? This sorta urks me as general audiences may get the wrong idea about Nintendo's situation in the market.
@HypocrisyNews - Thanks for that link, not at all what expected, I thought it was one of those weird Japan only ghost anime things, I have no idea what I confused this with. I'm interested in this looks fun. Though I do like the old fast moving parkour trailer better. Guess I need to study up.
