Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate has finally been knocked from first place in the Japanese charts in the wake of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Sony must be fairly pleased with their success this week, but we wouldn't be at all surprised to see Monster Hunter right back up at the top next week once the hype has died down.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker makes a respectable first week of sales, pushing 30,000 physical copies which has had an effect on the Wii U console sales as well. Other titles such as Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Yokai Watch 2, and Mario Kart 8 still manage to hold their own despite their age.

Hardware sales this week saw continued domination by the New 3DS LL (XL in the West) as well as a spike in Wii U sales that can most likely be linked to the release of Captain Toad's first fully-fledged outing. We can hope that Wii U sales will continue to rise in the coming weeks with the ever-impending Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Japanese gaming seems to have more of a focus on portability these days, but we can always hope for an exception to the rule.
See the number for yourself, last week's sales are in brackets.
1. New 3DS LL – 38,457 (50,619)
2. PlayStation Vita – 19,301 (9,874)
3. PlayStation 4 – 15,537 (10,078)
4. Wii U – 14,002 (4,787)
5. New 3DS – 13,373 (15,020)

I think the real news is the fact there are TWO Xbox One games in the top twenty.
Wow, nice spike for Wii U.
PSVita spiked too! how?
I like that the PSVita managed to make second on the chart this week, since Japan's actually been getting a lot of Vita support, even if a lot of it is still multiplats.
@cfgk24
It's acknowledged, it has marketing, it has games and Japan is portable centric. That's why. Direct opposite in the west.
Why the heck is a shooter like COD number one in the Japanese market?! LOL
Those darn Japanese. All they care about is FPS and football games. Shame about Captain Toad. It was never going to be a huge hit but I thought it would do decent numbers being a Nintendo developed game.
Nice to see everything get a bit of a bump, but it's still a dead market. 15k a week will not be a sustainable console and neither Wii U or PS4 will keep that number up either. It's a real shame we won't really be able to tell what impact Smash has, as it's going to be released right at the start of the period where all hardware sales explode regardless of new releases.
It's not Captain Toad that caused the spike, it's probably new bundles. PS4, Wii U and Vita all got new bundles.
The only things on this list that bother me are Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax (worst 2D fighter in a long time) and Tales of the World (spin-offs for Nintendo... are we supposed to thank BamCo for that?).
@Blast I don't get the popularity in japan, either, but I still have to admit that the online multiplayer in Advance Warfare is actually very good. But even then, compared to the rest of the world, these sales figures for AW are really low.
Japan already has Captain Toad?
Take that Yokai Watch I'm the new kid on the block in japan. Well minus youko....burning....bleh. I'm surprised that Call of Duty if reining this week in japan on the PS systems. I wonder why Xbox COD isn... oh....right.
Nice Wii U bump. And the XBone sold over 2,000 units? That's a huge achievement.
Get'em Toad!
Wii U only outsold Xbox One by 7 times. Means Xbone had a huge boost in sales last week.
Xbox 360 outsold PSP by over 300%. Thats alot considering both usually almost sell 100 units each week.
After playing several Call of Duty games (that my brother bought), I don't really understand the appeal... It's the same game, over and over again. .__.
@Blast
because it is a first week release, those numbers will be down to 10-15k next week and then gone off that chart probably the week after next.
Call of Duty... Seriously?!? I don't think I would ever believe that an FPS remade millions of times would actually beat a game that's actually new and different... AND NOT AN FPS.
Sales tripled? Well, that's nice.
Hopefully it'll stay a little higher following, as even more people now get to have a friend with this totally radical system, that they tehemselves in the long run really need.
Am glad by the approx 10,000 unit jumps over last week of both the Wii U & Vita.
I should be, but really am not surprised by the PS3 version of AW taking the crown rather then the PS4. Like Japan I feel I still have a fair few years of life in my PS3 so why bother upgrading? Now of they had put backwards compatibility in that would have been a different story (although I acknowledge tech / business issues).
@danielflugt The real news is that Xbox One actually sold a four figured amount of consoles...
I had no idea call of duty was popular in Japan
@LazyGamer Yeah, but 80,000 first week for Call of Duty, compared to millions first week for Yokai Watch 2, Smash Bros for 3DS, Pokemon, Monster Hunter, that's quite a difference...
Also, Mario Kart 8 is still going strong, it doesn't seem like Mario Kart 8 will stop selling for ages. Remember, last year, 1 Million Mario Kart Wii copies were sold, after the next generation console wws released...
Wait what, why they still buy Vita in Japan?
I find it surprising that the wiiu spiked almost 10,000 units for captain toad. A good surprise of course!
why do microsoft even bother in Japan if no one is going to buy it at all.
@StitchScout - as @Peach64 correctly pointed out, Captain Toad was only part of the reason for the Wii U spike as Japan finally got the Wii U MK8 bundle that the west got back when the game released.
NOJ announced this mid-Oct which probably also accounts for the Wii U sales drop the past few weeks. So in essence, the Wii U didn't really have a sales bump, the Wii U averages out over the past 4 months the same as it's been, about 8k, but people have put off buying a Wii U since late Oct when the bundle was announced. Not a sales spike as much as a sales delay. Same thing happened to 3DS and LL weeks before the new systems launched.

Captain Toad was never going to do stellar numbers anywhere. As much as some people love it many see it as a $15 DL game due to it's origins as a minigame in SM3DW. And w/ the Wii U low install base just how well can any game be expected to sell?
Who the hell is buying a PSP!!
@danielflugt Don't worry, they will be gone next week since every Xbox One owner in Japan purchased them this week.
What the hell call of duty is number one in japan. How the Japanese games industry has changed
I guess Japan wants a piece of that Rambo feeling. Can't believe they think its somewhat "creative".
cannot wait for the next installment of call of duty c.o.d up your nostril edition where they have really highly detailed HD nose hair and some of the quick timed events ever imagined all running at 60 fps and in lovely 1080p. i heard james cammron going to help with the new direction the plot involves a evil conservative David camron who wants to collapse britain within so they shrink a special ops team to up david camrons nose and shoot his brain until he sees sense
@Takerkaneanite6 Huh, I wasn't actually thinking from the perspective... But I'm still disgusted by the fact that it some how surpassed Leauge of Legends on the Twitch popular games list.
Well, a nice week overall, now let's see how Smash performs
2000 units sold, XONE is coming alive!!!
Spike... UPWARD?! Dude, spikes can only go downward... cough... Smash Bros... cough
When are people going to realize that Wii U is a much better value?
@Guys - Call of Duty has been growing very popular in Japan for a while now. I'm surprised no one's noticed the trend...
Good to see Advanced Warfare doing well, as well as Captain Toad.
@CanisWolfred I also read several times that the grand theft auto series is gaining serious momentum in japan as well.
@Blast ikr >.>
@joey302 Yup. I believe The Last of Us had a good first two weeks as well, as did Skyrim. Western games have an audience there, apparently, and a dedicated one at that...
Japan buys CoD?!?! I woulda never known.
