Though it lacks the Tourneys that are coming to the home console iteration, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has one of the most substantial online setups available on the portable, with multiple modes and the ability to watch and bet on other matches. Due to the relative complexity of the game, its online moderation and the scope for players to find ways to take advantage of gaps in character design, it also represents one of Nintendo's biggest challenges in keeping the online section running well and fair for all players.
It's had another minor update — to version 1.03 — with those goals in mind, it seems. While it changes the Conquest feature so that it doesn't show the standings when the contest is running, it's also made suitably vague balancing changes to the gameplay; details below are from the official changelog.
The Conquest chart will no longer be displayed when Conquest Mode is active.
Adjustments have also been made to balance the game and make for a more pleasant gaming experience.
As this update also includes all changes from update 1.02, it comes in at a fairly meaty 762 blocks — that's on our UK unit, in any case. It's mandatory for online play, too, so you won't be able to hop onto online matches until you're all up to date — when you try and run the game it'll prompt you to jump onto the eShop.
Let us know whether you notice any changes to gameplay — particularly online — with this update.

Maybe it fixes the "OP" Little Mac problem or something? I heard many people say that Little Mac is overpowered. Anyway, I'm glad they're making adjustments and such!
EDIT: No Little Mac problem huh? Thanks for letting me know then guys. I don't have the game so I don't know much
It'd be cool to get details on what was changed about each character.
OHHHH Bowser is about to be nerfed!
About the conquest table...
Why?
Yeah..it was kind of pointless to have the percentages shown while the conquest was active
@Inkling That's an easy one. If you can see that say, the gunners are at 2% while the other two are at 49% each, you'll feel less likely to support you team since they'll probs lose anyway. Also I think there's a reward for being on the winning team, so if one team is much more ahead...
Conquest cannot be cheesed anymore, I guess. The main other change I'm hearing is that the shield recharge time has been extended. Don't expect specific change-logs to balance, I don't think Samurai works like that. I believe his form of balancing is more organic.
I wonder if part of it is for amiibos? Sounds too big just for some balancing IMO.
Kind of glad conquest doesn't let you see that anymore. I'll admit, it did cause me to pick Kirby over Pacman, which I normally would not have done. Even though Team Zelda is behind right now last I saw, I'm sticking with them over Fire Emblem, and definitely over Pokémon.
Characters that need to be nerfed the most:
1. Little Mac
2. Link
3. Bowser
4. Olimar
But seriously, if you have trouble beating a certain character, Be a man and adjust yourself!
US or UK?
@MrMario02 Both
I just want some Palutena buffs...
Please understand.
Who cares if you can't play online because you can't play online when you can play online anyway due to the disconnects and lagging.
Oh, that's great! I was hoping they would be updating to try to balance people ala Tekken/SF/MVC (although Capcom is not so great at it...).
Fantastic. Hopefully we'll get a little info on the balance changes. There should never be a gigantic gap between the lowest-tier character and the highest-tier character, and hopefully they'll make sure that difference is a minimal as possible.
Balancing? Well, that'll be interesting to say the least. I wonder what changes have been done and will be done in the future?
@Sir_Anthony Why Link and Olimar?
If they nerfed Kirby's hammer I am in serious trouble.
It will probably fix some of these:
http://smashboards.com/threads/in-need-for-a-patch-collection-of-glitches-balance-issues-missing-features-other-problems.370405/
I'm surprised it didn't bring extra stability while it was at it. Can always use a bit more stability.
@Omarpixel9 Little Mac is not even close to being OP, he is fine in my opinion and can be taken out with 30% damage if played correctly against him.
Greninja though, I have not being able to beat him once, and I have not lost once with him either, he needs to be lighter, he can recover easily and can stick around with over 100%
I laugh at the "nerf ____" statements. Get good and learn how to beat them instead of having a knee-jerk reaction because you lost. Not every character is good against Little Mac, Bowser, etc. Each character has favorable match ups. I'll never take Shulk to fight Little Mac because I know he will struggle. That doesn't make Little Mac OP. There is a difference.
@shinokami I agree with you about little mac. He's not really good in the air which is how he balances out. I think Greninja's fine too.
They'd better not touch Ike. He's perfect how he is.
I honestly bet they didn't even touch the Characters guys...
@Undead Well, Link is a beast. He's fast, powerful, can grab others from a distance and even has ranged attack. I don't have much trouble beating him. But a lot of people complain about him.
Olimar was just a joke, He's far from OP >.>
i really hope they don't take away Wario's weird air momentum
I heard several characters got changed. Such as:
>Yoshi no longer has armor on his aerials
> Wario's weird vectoring is still present
> Mega Buster (FSmash) now travels farther (Almost half the stage)
> "The Conquest Chart will no longer be displayed when Conquest Mode is active."
> ZSS Apparently nerfed, DSpecial and UpSpecial don't KO at 90%
> Ness' DAir Meteors are easier to hit
> Falcon DThrow easier to connect, knee also easier to connect
> Possible upgrade in internet servers
> Yoshi Ledge glitch unfixed
> Ganon DTilt has a different trajectory. (From straight up to up and away)
> They fixed ALL of Meta Knights hitbox problems
> Sheik has little to no landing lag on her FAir
> Shulk's FAir got a range increase, shorter landing lag
> Robin's Arcfire lasts longer (probably a frame or two, never used her much)
> DK's smashes come out faster (small amount)
> Marth's ranges are slightly longer
That's what I've heard though. Not sure if this is all true or not.
@Omarpixel9
I hope not, link is my main and he's is horrible against little mac, so I love the practice
Version 1.3 or 1.0.3?
Maybe it's the placebo effect, but I can't help but notice that Shulk is a little faster and jumps slightly higher.
They should improve Peach's Up A move that does the rainbow... It's so hard to even make contact and when it does it so weak imo
Lucina now has a beard.
Ah, yes... Balance Board compatibility is on the way!!
Surely there's already enough balancing in the game already from the Wii fit trainer.
@squid No, they're saving that for the Wii U version. Only the noobs will stick with standard controls, the real hardcore players will be using the balance board.
@Jayvir
For the most part I favor Shulk and Pac-Man in For Glory 1v1.
It was a hell of a learning curve for Shulk on when and where to use each Monado buff. But it was for the best. I was losing match after match at first. Then things started to turn around. Little Macs, Bowsers, Zero Suits, Foxes, and Game and Watches seem to get into this particular pattern every fight. Shulk and his Monado arts throw them all off. I am in a good winning streak....except when it comes to Jiggly puff...they get me every time! It is very funny!
I have not tried conquest mode yet, I have mainly just been for fun mode online.
@crzysortagamer
Not if you keep your distance with all your projectiles And then mix it with well timed dodges/sword play. Grab and launch into the air as much as possible too! Don't keep the fight on the ground!
@orravan85
Haha you are totally right. He take priority over the sword though so its easy to goof up, thanks though, you just got me all pumped to play haha!
@ThomasBW84 Is it 1.3, or 1.0.3?
@Jetset
That's Brawl.
He was never in any of the top tiers to begin with, but for some reason, they took a good big away from him in the new game. He was my best character in Brawl, but now he has fewer Pikmin and, while his tilts are quicker and much stronger, his smashes are slower, which were one of his best features, prior. And his up special no longer has any offensive capacity (though it is better for recovery, that wasn't a desperate need for the character to begin with).
In short, 3DS/Wii U Olimar is bad. Still one of my top characters, just because I like his style, but he's been given a hard shove down the forthcoming tier list.
I think it's sad that Olimar has taken the biggest hit in this game
It also adds compatibility for the Dancing Stage Mario Mix pad.
If my main is downgraded I will hate it!
@ThomasBW84 The update size is 561 blocks for North American systems
@Sir_Anthony
I'd like to know your reasons as to why those characters (minus Olimar) need to be nerfed.
That's good I guess.
@orravan85
Exactly. Link has lots of potential, but most users don't even bother to throw his projectiles. I've faced many different players using Link and they usually only use his sword.
@crzysortagamer
Keep Little Mac away with ALL of your projectiles. Seriously, I never have a problem with Little Mac unless they manage to land that uppercut that ignores shields.
Hey Thomas, or anyone from Nintendolife really, please ask Nintendo for more details. "Balance adjustments" is ridiculous for a game like Smash Bros. Ask them to be more specific about what was changed in regards of characters.
Little Mac isn't that OP. He just seems like it on For Glory because it only uses Omega versions of stages. Knock him off the stage and he's most likely dead due to his godawful recovery.... minus this:
@IceClimbers Holy cow, that's pretty sweet.
@UnseatingKDawg I really hope ZSS didn't get nerfed like that. Not only because she's my main, but because those two moves are the only ones with real launching power that she has, with the Down B being hard as hell to connect. She's much more of a combo fiend and meant to do heavy damage rather than launching, but still.
As for the rest, if they're true of course, then Mega Man got a HUGE buff, unless the increased range is contrasted by lower damage or launching power.
As for the talk about certain characters needing to be nerfed, I can only agree with Rosalina and Luma being nerfed. People who are skilled with her are unbeatable - I lost ten matches in a row to the same guy.
Little Mac is quick and strong, but if you focus on evasion and timing your attacks, you can KO him pretty easily. Someone who's skilled with him is still beatable but requires serious strategy and being careful about letting the timer run out [my fights with him tend to last 3-4 minutes, anyways]. His recovery is god-awful, too.
And whoever says Olimar is OP is nuts. Two special moves are only useful in gathering more Pikmin, a third doesn't do any sort of damage, and the fourth is only damaging depending on which color Pikmin are by his side. However, his attacks are disgustingly strong, but he's slow and easily launched, too. He's such a weird character, but I have yet to lose a match against one, and my win rate's only sitting at about 41%
@Retro_on_theGo
That's a nice thought, but I'm pretty sure that if people found officially that their favorite characters were nerfed or other characters were buffed and not theirs, there'd be riots. I think it's best left to speculation and for the skilled eye to figure out.
There is a lot of bugs and glitches to be fixed.
I join the club of LITTLE MAC ISN'T OP. Yeah, I gotta admit, he hits HARD, REAL HARD, but with the correct moves he can die quite easily due to his godawful laughable recovery move; also, he is pretty light, every time he is around 60-70% he's as good as dead. I use Ness all the time and he hardly has any chance to deliver powerful blows
@IceClimbers If only that Sonic player used his recovery and wall jump to make it back..
Funny, I've tried playing with Little Mac in the single player modes, and while he is super strong, I can never seem to get through All Star Mode with him because stage hazards always kill me. Strong attacks, terrible recovery.
I will not get my hopes up for balance changes until they are confirmed. After all, Nintendo has never actually released a balance patch in history.
That said Lucina needs a sword length increase and reduced lag and landing lag on her attacks, and for Dancing Blade to not have knock back on the 1st 3 hits because she has no sourspot like Marth so opponents just fall out at very early percents.
@NTELLIGENTMAN I don't experience much of either of those problems online
This is just for the online right? Wont effect the balance of single playing it?
King Dedede's side-b attack is extremely OP. Also, Greninja is in need of some balancing.
@UnseatingKDawg
They fixed Meta Knight's hit box problems? Thank God, I was really worried he'd be stuck like that. I know he was crazy OP in Brawl but, he's practically unplayable in the new game due to the hitbox issue. Happy for that fix.
If the buffoons had any brains at all they'd allow Mii Fighters and custom move sets online.
Shulk definitely feels faster, in the area of his smash attacks, the Monado energy beam has a really short pause now, you can barely tell it actually has to come out.
Online is WAY better. It's almost like playing offline now.
Pauletena feels faster, but I don't play enough with her to completely confirm that.
That's all I got so far.
@SylveonLover You can hit the side-B thrown item and it'll go back towards Dedede, who'll take damage from it.
@DarkKirby I can confirm that Ganondorf's down tilt does indeed have a different trajectory - it now sends the enemy straight up instead of at an angle, the opposite of what @UnseatingKDawg said above.
Anyways, they better not nerf Jiggs' Rest.
Edit: Rest isn't nerfed thank god.
They changed Bowser's grab side compleately!, so that the grab glitch won't work.
@SuperiorTech
Yeah, im not good, but i use projectiles like crazy. Also his weak jump, air kick, hard tilt down is a awesome fast attack with reach when most people expect the downward sword move. Also found that after the down sword attack, a chard tap down really helps his speed, much like toon link.
@crzysortagamer
Wanna practice? Maybe I can teach you a few things.
@SuperiorTech
sure that would be awesome, my friend code is on my NL profile. i already got yours of yours
@Omarpixel9
Personally I think Lil Mac is fine the way he is. He's one of my newest mains and he does come with a few weakness which prove it takes skill to make the most of him.
Yeah, he's strong, fast and his smash attacks have super armor but he's light, has absymal air fighting game, and probably the worst recovery ability in the game. I've fought many Lil Mac's online and he's by far not invincible. Gotta hand it to Nintendo for the balancing job done to this game. This is easily the most balanced Smash game to date.
@gloom
Olimar's another one of my mains and I don't think he's nerfed. Having less pikmin gives him more visibility. His recovery move is better and he's still a good character. I do miss his dropkick (forward attack). Now they replaced it with a big fist which isn't so bad.
@Jayvir I agree with everything you said especially the Little Mac part he isn't unstoppable.It all depends on how much skill you have and how you take on the little tank in a one on one match.
@Turbo857 And i'm guessing your last main is Ike? Cause he's pretty badass in this game.
@Sir_Anthony Olimar?! xD nope.
@midnafanboy Ike is the best!! I main Ike so much it's unbelievable!!! My dream is to become the best Ike in the world!!!! I IKE FOR MY FRIENDS!!!!!
@PvtOttobot Yeah he is that's why he turned into my main.Cause they buffed him up.
@Sir_Anthony How Link needs to be nerded?
Please, nerf Ike. You promised you'd nerf him from Brawl and hes still cheap as hell. Anyone with half a brain cell can be good with him. You castrated MetaKnight and Olimar, Ike deserves the same treatment.
K this is really weird.. Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon Music is playing on the E-Shop. Reallyyyyyyy weeeeeeiiiird.
@GoshDangTravino: Again, that's what I've heard. Not sure if it's true. I did take notice that Donkey Kong swings his arm faster when charging Giant Punch though.
I still say it's the person behind the fighter, and not the fighter themselves. If you can figure out how they move their fighter, you can take them out. I managed to defeat my friend who's good with Little Mac as Donkey Kong - a character who's lightning quick against a big target. I'm not trying to berate you, this is just how I see the game in general.
@SylveonLover King Dedede's side be can be reflected by anything so that's ok.
From what I've tried so far (pre-update), I'd say Little Mac needs to be nerfed. And Megaman's leaf shield grab. And Sonic in general from the little I've seen of him.
Little Mac has way too much knockback on side A attack even at low percents (making it too easy to push light-med characters around), and having super armor for what looks like side and down smashes is a bit much.
@AugustusOxy They nerfed him enough, he's a slow character.Every slow character is strong like Bowser, King Dedede and Ganondorf.So you want him to get nerfed cause you can't beat one of them?Yeah i wonder how we would play as a slow and a weak fighter.He's like a Little Mac anyone with half a brain cell can use him,he's strong but he's not unstoppable.Get some skill Friendo or better yet know his weakness.I'll just tell you don't worry he's slow boom.
So they made my Shulukuh more playable.. Yay
Only person who was OP was ness. I have multiple videos of me just dominating little mac with kirby.
@Action4jackson He´s my main, and I wouldn´t say he is THAT OP, he´s a pretty good fighter wih his ups and downs, I personally think he´s at his best in this iteration of smash. He´s balanced to deal with almost any battle, and him, like Kirby, is a Little Mac killer with his improved aerial game.
I really don't play online much cause im trying to clear the game first,collecting trophies is fascinating to me,Its cool their balancing stuff that means they are taking care of their game,not like other companies"capcom..cough..."'It would be cool if they updated the game so we can use the d pad for movement cause the analog kills my wrist and thumb,after a while I have to rest,really painful,also it would be awesome if mega man's charge was change like samus charge cause sometimes megaman keeps walking and falls with this attack.
I don't think little mac is OP,his air and recovery is atrocious,he's pretty balanced for me,yes he's strong but he can be beat if you take him out the stage,also browser is awesome,now his much faster than in the past,and he is strong,besides no you can sort of PSA the game with customization,It would be cool if they let at least the miis to fight online.
@DeltaPeng Megaman's Leaf shield needs no nerf at all.
Still no improvement on control schemes (d-pad and stuff).
@espi probably because it's almost Halloween
I think if anything needs nerfing its grabs. The hitbox (if you can still call it that) for grabs are large and I don't see the point of letting you grab people out of the air. It's annoying that grabs are the fastest attacks in the game.
@midnafanboy
Yup. I got a few mains actually but Ike's definitely one of'em. I tried to main him in Brawl but he was too slow for me. Had a tough time against small speedsters and Pit's arrow spamming. But in the 3DS Smash, with the extra balancing, I feel Ike can legitimately give any character a run for their money.
@Turbo857
Let's play sometime. I've yet to fight against a good Ike user.
@Porky Lol, well, that may be true, as aside from grabbing it is pretty worthless. I played this one guy online, 1v1, Megaman vs Megaman, and once leaf shield was up you pretty much had to run or be grabbed. It may be different when playing against characters with non-projectile attacks with reach
@DeltaPeng I've actually taken to use the leaf shield to KO now. Yes, it has KO potential, not useless as many believe. But grabbing while Leaf shield is up is actually suggested as a combo iincluded n the Tips section so I doubt it will get nerfed in that regard.
@Jetset I'm aware there's a reason, I just think it's stupid.
@SuperiorTech
Yup, sounds like a plan. Is the name SuperiorTech on Miiverse?
@Turbo857
No. I can't remember what my name is. xD
@SuperiorTech
Ha, then you'll have to find me. I use the same name for my Nintendo ID.
@Turbo857
Search SwordTactics. That should be my name.
