Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate — known as Monster Hunter 4G in Japan — has utterly decimated the competition in its launch week, selling nearly 1,500,000 physical copies, but Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS still stands up as a strong contender in second place. Yokai Watch 2 also makes its way back up the charts as the wave of new releases on Sony consoles has died down this week, in turn allowing a fifty-fifty split in the charts between Nintendo and Sony.
Elsewhere Mario Kart 8 is still to be shaken from the top twenty, but sadly Hyrule Warriors is nowhere to be seen.

The New 3DS and New 3DS LL (XL outside of Japan) bring themselves into the fray and make a phenomenal first week of sales. The standard version sold a staggering 70,000 units, whilst the LL version had over double that figure. It's an incredibly encouraging sight to see, and it's clear that Nintendo is still cock of the walk in its homeland. If you'd like to see how we got on with the New 3DS console, click here.
The Wii U's sales have dipped again, though that's not necessarily surprising considering the absence of new releases for the system, in addition to the high profile arrival of the New 3DS and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.
Check out the rest of the hardware sales below with last week's sales in brackets.
1. New 3DS LL – 164,756 (N/A)

Damn the king has been dethroned.
Oh boy.... those MH4 sales.... almost what Smash is in just a matter of days.
and look at that. the Xbox One has now hit below 1k a week.... I doubt it is even going to make it to 500k (Japan) in it's life time.
Good sales for the New 3DS models despite the name blundering.
Dat New 3ds sold like hotcakes.
Wow, and the New 3DS was only out for 2 days that week. Next weeks numbers should be intresting.
Those are impressive numbers. It was smart to spring-board off of Smash and Monster Hunter for the new 3DS.
Domination domination everywhere...
Was there any doubt! Can't wait for MH4U!!
I'm definitely getting a New 3DS, it's the only way to play Xenoblade Chronicles on a handheld...
Wow, the other 3ds systems must of went on heavy discounts to sell over 25k combined!
Where is 2DS?

@BornInNorway81 2DS was never released in Japan
All hail the hunt! drumroll
@BornInNorway81 2DS doesn't exist in japan.
Another wow is look at the combined top 3 in total sales and you have just under 6 million units. Should be well over that by next week and that doesn't include shop dl's.
It's surprising to see sales of the old 3DS and LL UP from last week despite the newer consoles. Aren't the new consoles currently priced about the same as the old ones? I haven't heard anything about a price drop yet.
Nintendo did a smart move by making the monster Hunter deal with Capcom.
@AVahne Maybe the new 3DS was sold out in some stores and people couldn't wait to play MH4U and bought one of the older models? At least, that's the only decent explanation I can think of at the moment.
@Ernest_The_Crab
Makes sense. I forgot that MonHan came out on the same day. Though, how many MH fans in Japan don't have an old 3DS by now?
@Tsurii897
Oh wait disregard my old comment. There was a limited edition for the New LL, but none for the old one.
Monster Hunter is bigger than Smash in Japan? Shocker. #Sarcasm
Good week for Nintendo. I think those new 3DS numbers are solid, but given they came with the release of MH4U, I wouldn't call them great.
Apparently the Japanese also love dual analog controls, see? We're not that different.
I love watching the Xbone sales crash and burn in Japan, I think 804 is my new lucky number, that is at least until next week.
@PieEater163 809, but close enough. Just in case you intend to play the lottery.
Anyways, to put this in Perspective:
This chart only refers to Oct. 6-Oct. 12. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate came out on the 11th in Japan. It made almost as much as Smash Bros. 3DS' total sales for the past 2 months...in 2 days.
Disappointed to see bayonetta disappear from the top 20, hopefully the west can pull in some big numbers
@Spoony_Tech - New 3DS only went on sale last 2 days of last week, old model sales were probably from the first 5 days of people who didn't get the memo. Wonder if a lot of those were exchanged?
I think what's really impressive that nobody else mentioned is these MH4G sales are for the G version, when everybody in Japan has already played MH4 (1.8m 1st 2 days, over 4m total so far). That's crazy.
Nintendo sold a quarter of a million consoles last week that is Amazing I can't wait to get the new 3DS , the 3DS is my current fave system to play .. Congratulations Nintendo ..
Isn't 4G slightly behing MH4's sales? lol I think 4 made it past 2 million in 2 days. xD
its a shame they didnt do a wiiu version, the 3rd one seemed to do well on it
The sales are tremendous but I wasn't expecting as far of a split between the regular N3DS and the N3DS LL. I thought the face plates would have a huge impact, especially in Japan, but I guess people want larger screens for MH4G. I thought the numbers would be more like N3DS 85,000 and N3DS LL 100,000. Id be interested to know the amount of face plates sold in Japan.
I really want the N3DS for the face plates but I will need to test one out in-store before I buy. I bought my 3DS online back in 2012 and it hurt my hands. I had no choice but to upgrade to the XL for comfort reasons. However, I really want the face plates so I'm hoping the N3DS is comfortable to hold for people with larger hands.
A quarter million devices sold in a week - that's not bad
@midnafanboy Has Smash ever been all that popular in Japan? I played the 3DS demo and wasn't impressed. I can tell instantly as soon as the Wii U version comes out I wouldn't touch the 3DS version again, so it seems like a waste of money.
Also Monster Hunter is a far bigger franchise in Japan.
I don't understand why Hyrule Warriors isn't selling better in Japan.
@Tsurii897 - I know, and the save data transfer is way cool, but I still think it's crazy just how many people picked it up in the first 2 days, apparently a lot of them while buying a "new" 3DS as well. Kind of makes me wonder just how things would have turned out if Vita had the franchise rather than 3DS, its not like MH is a Nitnedo brand.
MH and YW - who says 3rd party games don't sell on Nitnedo consoles?
The thirst was real
What ? Why are some people buying the normal 3DS/XL ? A VERY high price drop HAS to be the reason
@shigulicious - Probably b/c
1. it's on Wii U - see Wii U sales #s
2. It's not SSB or MH4G or Destiny
3. they are all probably waiting for DQ Heroes next year (DQ is big is Japan)

@CanisWolfred
Smash has only been out for a month, but yes still impressive.
@element187 yes, its the top three games on the past Nintendo systems.
@Spoony_Tech hey spoon, we will have to trade FC's when MH4U comes out. It appears that you are as excited for it as I am!
@shigulicious Sounds good to me. Always looking for more players to play with! You can add me any time you want.
@Tsurii897 Nah, the real king returns on November 21st.
In Japan, four attractive girls will sit around at a Starbucks in a trendy part of Tokyo. And play Monster Hunter with each other on their 3DSs. That game's no joke there.
@Xiao_Pai That is true, but considering it's more of an improved re-release/expansion, that's extremely impressive. Goes to show that people definitely liked what they saw.
@Faruko I wouldn't be surprised if a few retailers dropped the price considerably to move out the rest of their stock, but looking at Amazon.jp,the normal 3DS already costs over 13,000 yen less than Monster Hunter bundle at their base prices (unless Amazon.jp is out of stock and those are the scalpers' prices).
@RoomB31 You're right, I thought it came out in Japan on Aug. 14th, but I guess that was Hyrule Warriors.
Yokai Watch 1 and 2 are both on the chart btw. Not sure if that's a good sign for Level 5, or a sign that everyone fell victim to the Monster.
Still amazing how 3ds is doing so well and wii u still selling iffy.
@ModestFan93 There's no "name blundering" in Japan.
Lets recap why Nintendo are DOOMED !!!.
1. 3D is a gimmick and doesn't work
2. Mobile phones are taking over gaming
3, Theres no second circle pad for 3DS
Whatever .....
Nice to see New 3dS XL outsell New 3DS by 2 to 1 - despite being the blander option.. .
Dat Monster Hunter sales tho. Still freaking sad it's not coming to the Wii U.
Dat Monster Hunter sales tho. Still freaking sad it's not coming to the Wii U.
Smash doesn't look too impressive in comparison.
Fatal Frame V has a different title in this rundown.
And both Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors fail to move 2700 copies.
If they sold 4000 combined, I'd be surprised.
Wii U is going to die in Japan and the New 3DS is going to kill it.
4500 system increase tells me that, to a certain extent, Driveclub is another system seller for the PS4.
Crazy that the Vita could drop 5000 units this week though.
I guess predictions of Danganronpa being a one week wonder are pretty apt.
@SahashraLA Home consoles are dead in Japan. The New 3DS has no effect on that.
@DiscoGentleman Actually, crow is "Karasu", not "Garasu" (romanized word for glass). Also, "karasu" is spelled in hiragana or kanji, while "garasu" is spelled in katakana and sometimes kanji. It's essential to watch for which set of characters are used in a translation! Grammar isn't a big deal in English, but it is in Japanese!
It seems like nobody is mad about Nintendo releasing an update to the 3DS with this name anymore, atleast in Japan. If I could get one here in Europe, I would get one ^^
@CanisWolfred Whoops, that was embarrassing, must of got the number mixed up in my head!
Xbox is doomed! lol The 3DS is kicking booty! Can't wait for Fantasy Life next week I hope it sells good in North America .
Wow I didn't know Dragon Quest X already came out for 3ds! I must have missed something. I really hope it gets a North American and European release.
@DiscoGentleman I didn't realize that at all! I've only seen the written word for it, I'm not familiar with the spoken phonetics. Thanks for the correction!
