The 3DS isn't an especially new piece of tehcnology, and in order to stay ahead of the curve Nintendo have taken a bold move in order to maintain pinnacle performance from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
When the game is running, players will not be able to access Miiverse or use the Internet Browser if Smash Bros. is the active software. That is of course unless you're using a New 3DS.
The New 3DS with its advanced hardware will have full Miiverse functionality, just as you'd expect. It's not a large part of the game, and it's preferable to losing gameplay features, but it's a shame not to have it. It seems consistent 60 FPS 3D gameplay has its price.
All other online features such as online multiplayer are not affected by this announcement, only the aspects mentioned.
What's your view on this announcement? Let us know in the usual place.

Not a game changer. But another reason to think about a "New" 3DS.
I'm sorta disappointed by this. Oh well.
My only question is 'Will US/EU ever get the new 3ds?'
I've never bothered with the 3DS Miiverse or Internet when I'm playing a game, so this doesn't mean much to me.
Feared the worst when seeing that headline, but I don't think I've ever accessed Miiverse or the web browser while playing any kind of game.
Not a major problem but it is upsetting... I wonder if they'll be doing this for future game like this?
That is annoying.
I hate Miiverse and I browse the web on my PC, so no loss.
Not a problem really, but it would be nice to get a release day for the New 3DS in the US.
Sucks if you want to access GameFaq's to look up strategies mid-game.
For a second I thought it was gonna be something important... What a relief
Alright, not a big deal for me. I never use Miiverse on my 2DS anyway, and I only go into the web browser when I need help with a boss or a puzzle, Since Smash is a fighting game, the only time I see myself going online to look up info is to learn how to unlock characters.
And my PC is better suited and faster for that kind of task.
So is this a confirmation that US, Europe and others will get the new 3DS?
Doesn't bother me at all. Never use the web browser or Miiverse.
Pretty disappointing. I hope this teaches Nintendo a lesson to stop holding back on the tech inside their consoles. I'd rather pay more for something cutting edge than old tech. The 3DS is a mess lol a successful one
I'm actually kinda glad it won't have a Miiverse community. People are so popped on the Smash Bros. Series community.
I actually find this pretty cool. They're pushing the old 3DS hardware to the absolute limit with this game (good models, textures, and animation quality considering it's a 3DS game) and them trying to regain some extra RAM from the OS by turning off multi-tasking shows how dedicated they are to squeezing out every last bit of juice. It's amazing what they can do with such decrepit hardware specs (even by 2011 standards; 3DS was outclassed by mobile hardware before it even released).
Now if only Capcom could do the same for their 3DS Monster Hunters games, so we can have slightly better textures.
EDIT: This also makes me a bit more disappointed in the Wii U version. Here we have the 3DS version looking quite impressive despite its insanely weak hardware, yet the Wii U version looks pretty hideous considering what it SHOULD be capable of. Regardless of art style, I expected AT LEAST PS3-grade models, not barely-above Wii-level. Also, what's going on with those environment textures? At least the game should be fun to play.
I personally think this is evidence that the next generation of handhelds is quite far away... otherwise I can't understand they'd not just add in "enhanced" backwards compatibility into the 4DS (or whatever it's called) instead.
Now beef up monster hunter and release that bundle with the n3dsxl over here.
Then I'm sooo gonna be please understanding!
I guess all the respect for us "ambassadors" got thrown out of the window. Just kidding - that already happened with the GBA Virtual Console being WiiU-only.
Oh, well, they want us to step it up, but the New 3DS is, in fact, a redesign, as far as I know. Nonetheless, I'll change my 3DS only when I feel the need to do so (and the battery might help in that regard).
Actually, I'm glad this series is finally making it to portable systems, so I'm not mad about this, if only a bit disappointed.
@McGruber Yup, it is, im glad that the Vita showed it whos boss...
As if hardware is of any real importance -.-
If hardware alone is king, tell me why the original Xbox or even the GameCube "lost" to the PS2. Both consoles are superior to the PS2 in many ways.
You have a game, thats pushing the system to the breaking point of its abilitys, so much so, that unimportant features like that had to be disabled. Thats not a sign for messy hardware, is a sign of a game actually being more than it technically could be.
Ah, I thought it actually affected the game. I can get behind a compromise like this.
Meh
Kind of odd, but it's ok.
i remember nintendo talking about this years ago. smash is now the first game that will diss browser and miivsere. only on standart 3ds though. not bad but that means you can not post screens on miiverse from smash
So, screenshots for Miiverse only available for the "New 3DS".... that's a shame.
Screenshots in Smash are my favorite things. And I was looking forward to sharing funny photos on Miiverse.
Oh, well...
There's always FB I guess?
Please Understand you must get a new 3DS
...and I should be disappointed because? jk
Anyways, no loss for me. I'm probably gonna be too busy Smashing to be making side trips to Miiverse and I only use my Smartphone or a PC for Internet Browsing than a game system. So, yeah. Again, no loss. No shame.
@Nirosmir Well you were getting N3DS anyway, Nintendo confirmed a ways back that it is skipping the Holiday in favour of 2015.
ugh. My only issue is having to wait for the new3ds to come out! TAKE MY MONEY NOW!
Not losing any sleep over this one
That's not just a shame, it's hard to understand.
I know it takes processing power to interrupt a game and open the home menu, but that's not disabled, right? Why not offer a photo gallery feature like Brawl had, from which you can upload screenshots you took the old way?
If this is supposed to be an argument for the N3DS, it's a damn lousy one, that's certain.
I have a hunch the release day patch is related to this. Assuming the 3ds os has to temporarily suspend certain features, it's clearly debatable whether the game fully uses/monopolizes the system ram, &/or cpu, at least enough that is equal to Miiverse, & the browser. Whether it does, or not, I bet this high a usage of system memory, & other system resources like the cpu causes severe instability(, even if we can't visually see it), & a situation where the game much more easily crashes on original 3ds hardware. It probably also has something to do with the increase of cpu in the new 3ds. I'll bet Smash was originally, or somewhere possibly early enough along the development of the game, optimized for the newer 3ds hardware, & os.
This patch probably makes it more stable behind-the-scenes on original 3ds models. That said, the patch may also fix any leftover programming errors, &/or player-noticeable changes to gameplay, &/or in-games menus.
Jeez, Nintendo. I already decided to get a New 3DS, stop adding more reasons! I love posting to Miiverse! Don't take that away — oh right. I'm banned from Miiverse right now...
Oh Nintendo...
Well, 60 fps in 3D > Miiverse
Don't care - I have never used either of those things on my 3DS's.
That sucks, but I don't use Miiverse and the Internet browser is not something I use on the 3DS. Not really worried about it.
Umm, I'm sorry - why exactly would you even have these things open when playing a game?? Maybe that's a stupid question, but I've never used the internet browser or Miiverse. Call me crazy, but I only use my 3DS to play games. There's literally like 10 other devices in the house that I could use to browse the internet with...
Ouch! It is in no way a deal breaker but I will be pushing myself to snag some overtime to get a new 3ds now.
Would be nice if you can use those while you are on the menus but really it isn't a huge loss. Great way to keep consistent 60FPS gameplay. However, Nintendo sure is trying to "push" people into the New 3DS. In my opinion they should make a really good deal for previous 3DS owners who bought a 3DS this year (or at least people who bought it during the last 6 months). So for example.. "Upgrade to the New 3DS and get two select games for free!"
Wow. Makes me question if Nintendo released a slightly under-powered console. I mean, I know it's typical for them, since that's been their game since the very first GameBoy, but now in 2010s technology is exponentially changing and improving, so you gotta pump your product up with some more juice to keep it dated and longer lasting. I thought the New 3DS will bring minor improvements that you won't feel for the most part, but having a game as grande as Smash sacrificing some feautures in order to run on the regularly intended system is a bummer. Personally, I couldn't care less about this, as this is a pretty banale feature to begin with. If I'm playing a fast-paced action game, then I most likely won't interrupt myself, especially with Miiverse and Internet browser. But hey, you might, so all power
Plus I'm not very crazy about Smash Bros. anymore anyway, so I don't see myself picking the new pair up anytime soon.
I just hope this isn't a sign of things to come though. I hope we won't have any other high profile games sacrificing actual important and relevant features [looking at you LoZ and Super Mario].
Ugh, the title of this article scared me. lol
@AVahne MH4 also disables Miiverse posting, so, they already do!
@billychaos Even though it's not confirmed yet, I see no reason why they wouldn't. When was the last time Nintendo didn't release a hardware upgrade outside of Japan? Actually, I don't know...which means it can't be recent. We'll get it, especially since certain games will exclusive to the console. I'm not talking about Xenoblade because I know it's not confirmed outside Japan either. There will be NEW games which use the C-stick and extra shoulder buttons released in first party series, so Nintendo will be keen to make sure we can all play them.
Seems like artificial way to promote the Super 3DS and try push people to move to the new hardware.
Oh well...
While I do use these features a lot on both my 3DS and Wii U, I don't think it'll be a problem if/when I'm playing online. I am disappointed there won't be any Miiverse posting from the 3DS version, but the better screenshots would come from multiplayer, so you wouldn't be able to go to the home menu anyway. As for no access to the internet browser, I don't know why I'd be on the browser when I'm playing Smash Bros to begin with. I'll likely have my laptop or phone close enough to browse for leisure...and I'd be looking up strategies for battle well before I get into a match with anyone.
These features missing aren't a big loss, but now I'm not sure if I'll be able to ride out the rest of this handheld generation without upgrading. If the 3DS is just the midway point to the Next Nintendo Handheld, I sure hope a new Zelda title, Metroid, Mario, or excellent 3DSWare game don't 100% require the New 3DS.
If I am able to ride out this generation with my original model 3DS, I don't know what I'll do for the next one. It'll definitely get upgrades, so it'd make sense to wait. If it doesn't get upgraded soon, I can save money when a price drop hits. If I don't get it close to launch, I could miss a few great deals/promotions like the Ambassador Program. If I wait a year to get it, I'll be behind the curve on games...maybe even the Next Pokemon game... I don't know how to feel about this. It was different with the GBA SP. It was different with the DSi.
...
...
I was expecting some big deal-- not even something I would have thought of even doing... until I was told I couldn't.
I don't mind no browser. No Miiverse is kinda lame, but not a dealbreaker in ANY stretch of the imagination. I don't want to interrupt a great play session to share a screenshot online and I don't need cheat codes.
Doesn't matter to me, 3DS makes no sense for Smash anyway.
@Nirosmir It's not like they could really miss out on it over here though.
Wait...I won't be able to play online unless I get a New 3DS? ...When does the new model come out again?
@NintendoFan64
Did you read more than just the headline?
A temporary setback. Getting a New 3DS anyway. I can't wait to have portable Smash Bros!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Daisaku36 How so?
Well, that effing blows. Using Miiverse with this game would have been perfect.
It really looks like consumers like us who bought a 3DS or 3DS XL are severely getting punished already. Not a great sign...
@scamander...Sorry. This was one of those moments were I typed something stupid without reading the full story. Sorry...
While I would have liked to post screenshots, it isn't a huge loss. Miiverse on 3DS is rubbish compared to the Wii U version and I've never used the Browser much at all.
Wait, so only NEW 3DS users can post smash screens on Miiverse?!
Not bad for mii but more reasons to get a new 3DS, will get one down the road.
I'll be getting the New 3DS, no doubt, but I didn't know it would have full Miiverse functions.... Does that mean they're ditching friend codes?
Simple way around it would be to update miiverse to allow you to add a screenshot from your sd card afterwards. Bit sad but no game changer.
Not sure if others pointed this out but my initial reaction was that this is likely a move to stave off cheating/hacking.
I've already started eyeing New 3DS Xl for reduced Miiverse load times. This contributes to my "need" to upgrade.
I can live with this if it means smash on the go.
The Smash Miiverse folks are... just... a odd group, and so many. So... I'm somewhat fine with it. Can't even find a word for them...
Well, my demo lags when I go to the HOME Menu, so I'm not surprised
@Daisaku36
I've always felt the same way. The circle pad just doesn't seem up for such a fast paced game. I'd rather not break my 3DS XL just to play this one game. It's going to be real interesting to see how sales of the 3DS game compare to that of the Wii U version. Smash on Wii U is a system seller. I don't think the same can be said for the 3DS version.
Plus, don't we all just want to play Smash Bros. in HD, finally... It's only been like 8 years since the HD-era started. I don't really see why everybody is so excited to play a version that looks considerably worse than Melee...
Well for one, that internet browser is balls.
And two, I don't use miiverse so neither of this is a loss for me...
Small price to pay. I hardly use miiverse.
Good decision but people will female dog and moan like always.
Miiverse is the greatest source of unintentional humor this side of the Grand Coulee Dam, I'm gonna miss it...
...for about a couple of months until I get my N3WDS.
That's fine. The title is scary, though. I thought it was like 'No online play!'
Again with the click-bait headlines?
@sinalefa LOL. Damn!!!
a shame but not big deal
ANDDDD I TOLD YOU SO.....This is just the beginning, its frustration but ohh well I guess we have to deal with it & buy the new one.
I have a feeling that Nintendo did this on purpose so we can all buy a New 3ds (Nintendo sucks with these names!!!)
I'm planning on buying the new one anyway. But I'm perma-banned from miiverse because of stupid cyber bullies, so I could care less.
If you're buying 3DS Smash for the "full" Smash experience. You're doing it wrong.
Wii U Smash > 3DS Smash
So it wasn't a coincidence that I couldn't access Miiverse while playing the demo...
another terrible decision by sakruai and nintendo!!
Anyone who claims they're doing this on purpose is just being silly.
Miiverse and Nintendo Photo uploader to them is free advertisement for Smash, and no one would ever consider sharing Smash Bros. photos as a selling point to the 3DS.
Makes no difference to me. I'm glad the designers made intelligent decisions to ensure optimal performance of the game on the old 3DS systems.
@Nirosmir That's already been confirmed by Nintendo themselves. We're just waiting on a more specific release date than the vague spring 2015 window they gave us
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is slated for March- I imagine they'll coincide the release of the New 3DS with that game, considering it's releasing around the same time and takes advantage of the second analog. Either that or the New 3DS will release a month before Monster Hunter, in order to put some space between it and Xenoblade.
Oh ppl asking why didn't Nintendo built a better HW on the 1st place. Facepalm!
YO KNOW WHY?.....CAUSE BETTER HW COSTS MORE MONEY!
Nintendo know that what has kept them afloat has been cheap HW that works and sells games, specially Nintendo games.
They don't have Sony and MSs resources so when it's about nickles and dimes they will go the cheap route. You already have the high-tech version, called the PS Vita...how's that going for ya?...tons of AAA exclusives games coming?....sigh
I'm more dubious about another issue. I think they could have still kept Miiverse. I'm thinking in a conspiracy to just keep people thinking that the New3DS is the real deal. They just take away important but not essential stuff, so they keep some costumers thinking.
Whew. I thought it was something I use often. I can live with this.
I can live with that limitation. I rarely use those feature on the 3DS anyways.
A game like this is pretty much what makes Miiverse awesome. To not be able to post screnshots (if that's the case) is a big disappointment. I want the New 3DS, but it feels like a bunch of Nintendo peripherals thrown into one console. Every one of them will hardly be utilized due to this splitting the market. I'm tired of people making excuses for Nintendo's weak hardware. The only reason they do that is to keep the system considerably cheaper, but they pay the price in the end.
Too bad we couldn't get the new 3DS early as well...that's my gripe with the thing. :-l
@Diddy_kong The idea of a portable Smash, if you ask me, is more appealing than an HD one. Although I haven't seen the game in person yet, it also looks pretty great for what it is(and 3ds games tend to look better in person than screenshots/vids).
Big N really likes alienating their early adopters. I'm getting really sick of this.
@McGruber
Do they? Your aware of the history of Nintendo's handhelds, right? The "older, affordable technology" thing was Gunpei Yokoi's philosophy, and its because of that Nintendo has been the reigning king of the handheld market since.
You call it an "excuse", but its never been a selling point of their handhelds, and its never been an issue. The only issue here is your basically cramming an Xbox 360 game onto a Wii, so of course there are going to be concessions somewhere.
not surprised by this @ all.
Need that New 3DS XL ASAP!!
Yet still no announcement for the new 3DS WTF Nintendo!?
Don't really care, never use Miiverse (apart from on Wii U) and I have never used the Internet Browser on either console ever.
This means we're not going to get Miiverse spoilers right now if we watch the SSB thread...
@Baker1000 @billychaos @mamp It's been confirmed for a while now that the New 3DS is coming to the West in 2015, Nintendo is just not hyping it because it'd kill holiday sales for the regular 3DS.
The only game I've ever felt the need to use the internet browser for whilst playing is Pokémon X, just to quickly check things like when a move is learned or when an evolution happens. I can't imagine there'll be much desire to check things like that during 'Smash, and even if I do there are more than enough internet enabled screens around to facilitate it.
@xj0462 You know, it probably wasn't a decision. They were most likely forced to do it because the 3DS didn't have enough RAM.
Not like I'm ever going to think about browsing on my 3DS while Smashing. "Close software" isn't a difficult command, really.
Phew, from the headline I though this would be important, but its not: Who plans on stopping an online match so that they can use a very slow browser/miiverse?
Meh, dont really care but I really hope this doesnt start a trend of original 3DS users have inferior version of a game compared to new 3DS users.
@billychaos yes but next year. They aren't fully announcing because they don't want to kill holiday sales.
Guess I won't be able to post screenshots. Hope they have a feature to take them like in Brawl.
I've been playing the demo since yesterday afternoon, and considering that the demo basically makes my 2DS restart after I close out of it, this doesn't surprise me. It seems that the game will utilize nearly every last bit of the handheld's hardware to make it perform the best that it can, so I can deal with that. But like @FJOJR said, I hope there's a feature to take screenshots in the very least.
Anyone think this "new" 3DS which actually has boosted specs and a few games that only work on it, is also a test to see if they could do the same with the WiiU?
Imagine if next year they release a higher spec'ed WiiU ?
What about the beefy CPU?
Smash Bros could easily run at 30fps on old hardware, 60fps on new.
@Jmaster well i have a solution to that! download more RAM!!!
@xj0462: Ram is impossible to d/l! It's hardware, not software! It has to be in the system when it's built. The 3ds is not upgradable in this sense, like a pc is. Edit: Ever since I got a WU, I've used Miiverse surprisingly frequent. Before, when I only had it available to me on the 3ds, it was a lot slower to navigate, & I used it less, b/c it seems clunky/slow to me. I still take care considering the ppl I interact w/ may very well be mostly children, than adults, but common sense, & wisdom allow me to use Miiverse consistently, & safely regarding myself, as well as others. I like posting screens, but I can live with this. Before last December's update, Miiverse wasn't on 3ds anyway.
@Capt_N ram cant be downloaded?
@xj0462: No, however software, & system firmware updates can be downloaded to better use(optimize) the use of the ram already available. Also, sorry if the use of !s in my above post to you sounds a bit snappy, when I said, "Ram is impossible to d/l! It's hardware, not software!". Sounding snappy was not my intent. I apologize. Edit: In a technological sense, the 3ds ram could be upgraded by physically putting newer chips into an original 3ds, however this is not recommended, as well as the fact the system was not designed to be physically upgraded. Most video game consoles, & handhelds are not made to be physically upgraded by the owner of the device, like a pc is designed to be. It can be done, but it is not intended.
@BassLostie
So if you look up Peach's dress on old 3DS, I guess you can't post it to MiiVerse
@Capt_N thats alright, it didnt sound very snappy to me
Um, I don't care, I use my game consoles to play games. Also I won't buy New 3DS, I'm waiting for 4DS, please understand.
