As Nintendo steps up its efforts to hype Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, it's no surprise that the Wii U version remains undated, with formal details no doubt coming after the portable brawler is on store shelves.
Sensible predictions typically peg the HD version of the fighting game, along with the amiibo toy range, for a November release. North American retailer Fred Meyer seems to have either made an educated guess or leaked information provided to the sales sector by giving out reservation cards with a date of 21st November.
This date would make sense, coming in just ahead of the Black Friday madness in stores, which is typically one of the busiest shopping weeks of the year. As the card notes the date could change, and we'd wager that a week earlier would also make sense. Whenever it arrives it'll go up against a host of big-budget triple-A rivals.
Is Super Smash Bros. going to be a day one buy for you this November, assuming the predictions are correct? Let us know.
Thanks to Benson Uii for the tip.

That seems like a viable release date, as Nintendo releases their big games on Fridays. I'm holding out for an official date before I mark it on my calendar, though.
Should have been 18. Sonic Boom and Watch Dogs release on that date
If it's true, then it's the same release date as Watch Dogs U in Europe? (18th in US)
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/09/watch_dogs_wii_u_release_dates_confirmed
That is way earlier than what I expected! Much better than delaying the game to Q1 2015!
Well there goes the 3DS version...
Cool. It'd be a really bad move to release it after the holiday rush.
Won't be getting Smash Bros right away. I'm getting Watch_Dogs!
@Mega719 Why?Do you actually believe watch dogs is going to sell? Come on man crappy ports never sell,Wiiu owners aren't stupid to buy it for full retail price oh wait some are.But sonic boom that's a different story.
I'll get it when I go Black Friday shopping!
So how will this affect Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's sales
@midnafanboy you can't predict it won't sell what if it is better? Yes because the Wii U still doesn't have a lot of units and based on what we hear there won't be any major features but it doesn't mean the game would do poorly
I saw a picture that had another part attached to that which said something like release date subject to change so I wouldn't call it confirmed yet.
@Mega719 It lost all the features the other version had. It's not going to have DLC,the online mode i don't they even think they cared enough to even put it in this version. Is going to run poorly than the PC and the Xbox 360 version. And worse of all it's releasing the same week as Smash bros that's how much they give a damn about this game. They took 5 months to make this pathetic port and the only thing it has you can play on the gamepad, and it has the map on the controller.Wow you can see all the hard work they did with this version.
This is on my Black Friday and Cyber Monday list.
@yokokazuo I saw it on IGN. It's not officially confirmed/announced so it could still change.
@Mega719 After the recent frenzy across the internet due to the download codes for Smash Bros, do you really think either Sonic Boom or Watch Dogs are going to worry Nintendo?
And remember, Nintendo games traditionally far outsell third party games on the same platform.
@Mega719 That'd still be on the NA release of both of those games if they moved to the 18th. Would that really help any better?
@PokeMarioR That's kinda interesting but I don't think it would really bother ORAS sales much since those are for the 3ds group and Smash 3ds is releasing before then anyways.
I could have sworn I read the treehouse was going to give us WII U release date. Oh well!
I'm still holding out hope for a 2014 release, but I am personally expecting it to be post-Black Friday. I don't care when Watch Dogs launches, it will not do well on the Wii U.
@midnafanboy source
Well I know I'll be playing Pokemon ORAS before this.
@Lalivero @FragRed i'm referring to to them all being possibly great releases that releasing them all at the same time would be great for Wii U second anniversary (at least in NA) Although i can only predict Smash Bros would be a high mark
"Is Smash Bros. gonna be a day one buy?"
LOL
@faint I hope you don't honestly think they even tried on the port. But a source for what the framerate will be terribly, has no DLC and might miss the online mode.No i don't but i do have facts about almost every port Ubisoft made for the Wiiu.Let's start shall we?Splinter cell blacklist for the Wiiu has all the features but they didn't add local mode,Assassins creed 4 for the Wiiu has No DLC , the frame rate was terrible. And what's worse that the same team that made the black flag port for the Wiiu is making this one.And i might be wrong it maybe has DLC has a solid framerate, but no ones knows cause Ubisoft hasn't said anything about it.And if the port was actually good why hasn't Ubisoft showed anything? But once more i ask this question do you actually think they even tried to make this port if you do you must be mad.
Of course it is, Ubisoft knew it was releasing this day and they knew that Watch dogs would sell poorly releasing it this day. They want watch dogs to fail so they can justify their statements from earlier
@Lalivero Yeah, My thought was that some people might not have enough money for both. But I am getting both, Hoenn is my favorite Pokemon region. And Smash is…well…Smash
My prediction. Japan gets it November 21st, and North America gets it December 5th
@midnafanboy Ubisoft said before that this version would "outperform last gen versions " and they said nothing about online. In fact they haven't told us anything about the game not even let us see it. Don't jump to conclusions
Of course I'm getting it Day One.
@Mega719 Ah, you mean like some big bonanaza or something? o,o Wouldn't that still be kinda crazy?(although look at the time of the year right after...)
@PokeMarioR I guess it depends on who we're focusing on then. The 3ds audience will probably already have gotten Smash by then and can move onto ORAS/throw it into their mix. Now the people who own both consoles? I guess so...although, due to what games we are talking about here, you'd think they would save up for both, ha.
@Mega719 If that's true then why in gods holy name haven't they showed anything.Cause if this port was great, anyone with a brain would have shown.it To show Wiiu owners the reason they should buy it, have then shown anything?Nope, and what are the new features the Wiiu version has a stupid map on the controller and off tv play.Wow that's new it's not like almost every games has those features and it sounds like they used the 5 months they had to show off some unique features huh?
@Dipper723 Japan gets it November 21st and NA gets it 2015, more like.
On the topic at hand, I really hope this is the release date. It is only 8 days before my birthday!
I would go ahead and assume this is the release date. It makes too much sense not to be the release date.
Can Smash Bros truly have any rivals?
It would be a stupid move by Nintendo to make it a December release. No one would actually buy it because already people have bought there gifts. It would be perfect for November & just in time for Black-Friday.
Been calling a Nov close to black friday release since they announced the window. That is normally when they do their Holiday game anyway. I'm just glad it is before black friday because I know I have to work that day and I'd like to get some smash time in prior to that.
I just made ÂŁ40 today by buying/reselling 3DS demo codes on eBay Thanks Nintendo, you're the greatest
Seems believable.
...Crap, Omega and Alpha come out on that month don't they? xD
@midnafanboy I'm not a ubi fan and myself have attacked their wiiu ports on this site. What I don't do is pass off educated guesses as fact.
I can't wait and if it is true then I plan to get on black Friday but I highly doubt I will use my wii u gamepad since the sticks on the 3ds versions are supposedly breaking with the rubber part or the plastic part so I gunna stick to the old gamecube or wii with numchuck controls.
Prepping the cash catapult for the day it comes out. If that day is true, then Smash 3D and WiiU should be able to get about equal playtime from me.
why do they do this to my wallet sonic boom twice and smash bros twice
i guess having a wii u and 3ds does have some consequnses
@faint Educated guess? i don't think so, is just i don't believe anything Ubisoft says anymore.Like they said the Wiiu version of this game might the best version of Watch Dogs and they haven't showed anything of it.I don't understand their logic,if it was great like they said it is, they would have shown a trailer or something to get people interested.I'm just going what i feel they didn't even try with this port, they just put the map on the gamepad and called it a day.
It already is a must buy for me!
I pre-ordered it!
@VIIIAxel Yes, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire!
@Xiao_Pai Same day and if HMV is correct, Smash Wii U will be delayed a week in Europe just like the Pokémon games.
Wouldn't doubt it. Blowing all my money in November anyway.......
yikes ... this is gona cause me a bit of a problem =w= pokemon and smash ... i might just be waiting till christmas for smash like i planned originally

Already discussed this ad nauseum last night w/ @JaxonH but here are a few tidbits to rain on everyone's parade:
The 11/21 date was given by a distributing company before summer as seen in this youtube video so it's probably just a very early placeholder date:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlI9AM2eno0
Target still has pre-order GC like this for SSB for 3DS that say Summer 2014 at the bottom. I don't care what continent or hemisphere you live on Oct 3 is NOT summer.
Probably sometime after Nintnedo gave out a distribution date it gave the date for Pokmeon AS/OR for Nov 21 b/c it knew SSB U wouldn't be ready by that date. Are they really going to release both of those games on the same day?
Nintendo just had an eight hour Treehouse special on Friday, if SSB U had a date we probably would have gotten it then.
SSB for 3DS comes out Oct. 3, Nov 21 seems a bit too soon, no?
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker still doesn't have a US release date, probably b/c they are waiting until they can finish SSB U and get that dated. Even if they knew behind closed doors the SSB U date but were holding it back why not announce the CT:TT release date, we already know it's Jan 2015 in the EU?
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/08/captain_toad_treasure_tracker_delay_in_europe_explained
CT:TT must be close to done to get an EU release date of Jan, why doesn't NA have a date besides waiting on SSB U to get dated first?
11/21 makes a whole lot of sense, and it may yet come out that day, but I'm not believing it until Nintendo says so.
Shouldn't this be a rumor since its not confirmed?
I actually hope it doesn't release this close to Pokemon.
Day 1 buy for me! If this is the real release date, I'll be spending a lot of money on Nintendo games that day.
Did anyone else have it in their head that it would be some time in December and are really excited about this? I mean, I know this is the obvious optimal time, but I just wasn't quite sure.
AND I'M STILL NOT QUITE SURE, because let's keep in mind that this super isn't confirmed.
@rjejr Nobody is saying it's confirmed, just highly probable. 3 separate leaks for Smash and Amiibo say Nov 21, I wouldn't dismiss it lightly. Again, obviously it's not confirmed but it is more likely than not. Nintendo doesn't give placeholder dates. They only give dates when they actually intend to release. Release windows are another story. But when it comes to actual dates, especially just 2 months from release, odds are they're accurate.
It's one thing to give a date back at E3 when it's half a yr away. It's a whole other story when you're 2 months from launch. Don't take it as fact, obviously, but don't be surprised either when they announce Nov 21.
And keep in mind, Smash did release in summer, it was only in the west that it's releasing 12 days after summer ends. And is anyone really gonna split hairs over 12 days? We're trying to figure out the approximate time of release, not take bets in whether it was technically the exact date they were shooting for.
If Smash U comes out within 12 days of Nov 21, who cares. We just want an approximation, to know when to expect it.
@kensredemption You're going to blindly buy Watch Dogs? LOL have fun with those amazing features the port has,and the solid 30 fps
watch dogs was completed for wiiu before the other consoles but was held back because of poor sales on zombie u, of course it won't sell as well as smash bros l will get smash day 1 and may pick up watch dogs when it hits 19$ or less!
Regardless, I'm certain it's going to be somewhere around that date. I've been saying this until I get blue in the face. They need to get this out before Black Friday, they just have to.
@rjejr
In reference to the Pokemon comment:
Sure you can say the games compete for shelf space, but it's a 3DS and a Wii U game, so I don't see a problem with it. It's not a bad thing to blitz the market, especially around Black Friday, Americans are crazy around that time of the year. They are so crazy, that I just stay indoors and hermit until the chaos is over.
@BEASTMODE You're going to buy Watch dogs when the price is 19 dollars or less and pick up smash bros day 1? I like the way you think.
I hope it's true. The fact that it still doesn't have a specific date scares me,I'll just be happy if it is, in fact, released this year.
Going to get Mario Kart 8, Shovel Knight, and The Wonderful 101 with Smash Bros.
Hmm... That date seems viable. I would have expected a date by now if this was any other game. Nintendo must be worried how the 3DS version might perform I suppose. Still, they are running out of time to keep the official date hidden much longer.
@Midnafanboy you are probably right about Watch_Dogs. Still, there is a slight possibility you could be wrong, so best to just wait till we see something conclusive. Don't plan on buying either way, however.
PS Love that avatar.
I'm already looking forward to the weekly sales of late november.
@rjejr i agree with u completely…i dont mean to sound negative but if nintendo wanted to reveal the WiiU version release date they wouldve done so on the treehouse stream on friday. But Im hopeful that it is true especially with the Amiibo supposedly releasing this holiday season too but at the same time im a bit skeptical but then again last year nintendo released 3D world, link between world an mario party at the same time....i dunno anymore…im overloading so im just going to play sum Xenoblade Chronicles and get away from all this madness
Well, its a bit early if you ask me for how little info was spilled on the WiiU version and its unique features / dev progress, but i would welcome it any day.
@Lunapplebloom Ha thanks and until i read some people praising the Watch Dogs port. Then i will stop talking so much trash, until then i would keep saying Ubisoft didn't do anything with the gamepad and they just lied about needing more time with the Wiiu. And they know some people will blindly buy it.
@rjejr
I don't see why they cannot release both games on the same day, as they are each system's Holiday game and system seller.
But still I won't believe this until we have official confirmation from Nintendo. Only thing I know is that Smash U should not miss Black Friday.
And if their big holiday game does not have a date, it is no wonder Captain Toad does not have one either.
Release 5 games on one day for all I care.
@sinalefa - Consnses seems to be Pokemon and SSB U on the same day is ok since they are on different systems.
If it does turn out that's the case - I'm not saying it isnt' coming out the 21, just that I'm not putting it on my calendar yet - then I hope they make a big advertising push and call it "Offical Nintneod HoliDay" or something. These 2 (actually 3) games plus the amiibo, all releasing on the same day. How could they not advertise that?
Did people already forget what Ubisoft said at E3????? they said they had a game done and ready to release on the Wii U but still decided to hold it back... ever thought that maybe that game is Watch Dogs? well let them be dissapointed, I tried it on the PC and just couldn't keep going.
At this point I don't think Nintendo will announce the date until after the launch of SSB 3DS. Promotes more purchases of the 3DS version for those who can't wait for a ??? date.
My predictions: Whenever they do the Smash Bros. U date Reveal, they probably will have a complete "Direct", which will contain more information on early 2015 games, like Mario Maker, as well as Amiibos and the PACK 1 MK8 DLC. The Direct's date will probably be within a week (give or take) of October 31, just before that MK8 DLC. Then, About November 10th, they'll have a big Treehouse presentation full of Amiibo stuff, and a 5 hour Super Smash Bros. for Wii U demonstration. The Public demo should be launched shortly after, and about two weeks later the game launches...
To answer the topic (as if anyone cares): If it doesn't come out just before the astounding Black Friday, it's launch will probably be mid December. I'm getting it at launch, and at retail, because it would be days before I'd be able to finish downloading the downloadable version.
Nintendo has done something brilliant with the "Only a few can play the early demo" campaign. It seems reasonable that they would do the same thing with the Wii U's version. I hope they expand it, though... More like "If you got the 3DS version, you can play the demo"
UPDATE: I guess I was pretty close to the mark!
@Lalivero I'm saving for both Sm4sh Wii U and 3DS, And Omega Ruby. I've only managed to get enough for 2
@Inazuma_Pikpik I work for Fred Meyer. I was told by my manager that this is just a "place hold" date. We have no idea what the actual release date is. It could be the 21 or it couldn't who knows.
@aaronsullivan
I never thought about that and that is indeed a great point. Since you are not sure how long you will be waiting, then you buy the available version.
@Psyclone That game wasn't Watch_Dogs, they said it was family friendly.
Seriously are Ubisoft STUPID! To release it the same day as super smash bros. ...SUPER SMASH BROS.! They should just wait and see what Nintendo officially announces then announce the Watch Dogs Wii U release date.
@123akis They are trying to make a point: "UBISOFT GAMES DON'T SELL WELL ON NINTENDO."
Makes sense to be in November, just look at the official Nintendo store page... the Amiibo's were originally being shown as being released in November when you clicked on the "more details" tab on a character, which was then changed a few days later to just say "winter"
@rjejr Yeah this date was debunked on another site pretty a while ago. The retailer guesstimates dates, the most recent one to be wrong was GTA which they had pegged for October.
In anycase in the UK atleast both Watchdogs and Sonic are launching on the 21st November. Nintendo can't afford to sabotage sales from two of their largest third party supporters if they hope to have any kind third party support in the future.
Personally I don't think were seeing Smash Wii U until 5th December at the earliest.
I couldn't careless about the Watch Dogs. Just not my cup of tea. A lot of realeases from UBIsoft lately doesn't apeal me
Guess I might have to put off Little Big Planet 3.
@BlackSpy
inb4 @2sang and any of his "Iwata impression" comments.
Sounds plausible. I will find some way to get it day one. I probably won't get it at midnight.
@Emblem - Didn't know about the UK dates outside of Captain Toad. Ubi can go... but since Sega went to all the trouble to make a Wii U exclusive, yeah releasing SSB U on the same date would not be very nice. Not very nice at all.
@rjejr Yeah, I don't much care for Ubi's treatment of the Wii U either. Sega however have given a bunch of support via exclusives & eshop games, they are also responsible for the Wii U getting both Bayonetta 2 & W101 by initiating talks between Platinum and Nintendo when they couldn't get funding anywhere else.
Sonic Boom launches on November 18th in North America, but the 21st in Europe. I personally think that Smash will likely have the same release schedule as Pokemon ORAS: November 21st in NA, a week later on November 28th in Europe.
I could be wrong about the European release date, but I'm almost 100% sure November 21st will be the NA release date.
I don't see Sonic Boom selling that well given that Nintendo cannot afford to release Smash Wii U after Black Friday in the US. Black Friday sales are absolutely crucial.
@JaxonH - "If Smash U comes out within 12 days of Nov 21, who cares."
Everybody on here who says it has to come out before BF, b/c 12 days after the 21st is after BF. And if the date was Dec 21 I would say the same about coming out after Christmas.
12 days may not matter during most of winter, spring, summer and fall, but between mid-Nov and late Dec 12 days could mean a lot.
Personally I think it could come out Dec 25, Dec 26, Jan 1 or Mothers Day and still be a big hit, this is a must buy game for Wii U owners, not W101. That said sales would be better pre BF or pre Christmas than they would be after.
@rjejr and it probably will come out before Black Friday, but if it doesn't I don't really personally care. I leave sales to Nintendo. All I care about is when I get to play the game. The question was whether it was going to be this year or next year, so this leak was important inasmuch as it clarified that it will in fact be this year. I don't care if it's before Black Friday, after or any other significant date on the calendar. I'm just interested in the approximate timeframe I'll be playing it.
The only thing that makes me think that it's still going to be released in 2014 is the fact that amiibo rides on Smash coming out. Nintendo can't afford for amiibo to miss the holiday shopping season.
@DBPirate 9 days before mine
In any case, I'm so glad I have mine pre-ordered and coming in the mail through GameStop.
Duck Hunt dog or Watch_Dogs? Hmmm...
I'll probably end up getting both, anyway!
Watch_Dogs is screwed if this is true. Which I kind of hope happens, not that it would be smart, but more so just as revenge... Ubisoft really boned Wii U owners with this late of a release.
I actually work at a Fred Meyer. They're mostly located in Oregon.
Dear @ThomasBW84,
Are they really gonna be named "for 3DS" and "for Wii U" respectively? :I
That's SO unimaginative!
Sonic boom will be my purchase. Sorry, Nintendo!
@gage_wolf
"Ubisoft really boned Wii U owners with this late of a release."
For me personally, Ubisoft killed any excitement I had. Since the game hasn't really had great word of mouth by Xbox and PS players, I'm just not interested anymore. We were all hoping for the gamepad to be utilized to the fullest, but it sounds like there's nothing more than an interactive map and off tv play. Great thanks for spending those 6 months so well.
In reference to the release date of Smash. Ubisoft had to know that it was coming around this date, so really the fault is on them.
Pre-ordered the wii u version at best buy to get the coin. Will be picking it up on day one! Going to take the day off from work so I can get some quality time with my new love.
I know there's all the strategy, fiscal mumbo jumbo, release of SSB3DS first, etc., but I don't see what's so hard about stating the obvious. We KNOW the game will be out this year, and it's NOT going to come out on 12/31/14 which would be ridiculous. I find this date plausible and set it in my brain log before it finally becomes official.
@kensredemption A brony that spend all his time trolling NL articles? Ha that's a new one,i never troll i tell the truth especially with Watch dogs.Oh and i'm not giving you advice i'm just telling you have fun with the 30 fps and those normal features, every Ubisoft game made for the Wiiu. Cause wow that map on the gamepad sounds exciting huh?And especially with no online or DLC. But still a brony who trolls? Hehehe people on the internet never ceases to amaze me.
I hope it's a worldwide release, especially when Japan got the 3DS version one month earlier it makes waiting for it that much harder.
