It's time to brighten our Mondays with the European Nintendo Download Update, once again, and this week serves up a lot of options across the Wii U, 3DS and even DSi. There's a major retail arrival on 3DS, new titles on both eShop platforms along with Virtual Console entries, plenty of discounts and even a DSiWare release. There's a lot to get through, so let's get to it.
Wii U eShop
Art of Balance (Shin'en Multimedia, €8.99 / £7.15) — This expanded and improved version of the previous entries in the series includes a variety of new features, in particular new modes that support online play, along with more accurate physics, improved visuals and a host of control options. We'll try not to fall over as we tackle this for a review.
Angry Bunnies: Colossal Carrot Crusade (Cypronia, €6.99 / £5.99) — The transition of 3DS games to Wii U continues with this one, a physics-based game that's basically Angry Birds with bunnies. This promises 150 levels, and although we were thoroughly unimpressed with the portable entry we'll give this one a fresh look on Wii U.
Wii U Virtual Console
Nobunaga's Ambition (Koei, €7.99 / £5.49) — This is an ambitious strategy Super NES title, with a name that may be familiar to those that enjoyed cross-over title Pokémon Conquest on DS. The depth of this title could be daunting or provide countless hours of entertainment, and we gave it a reasonable recommendation in our Wii Virtual Console Nobunaga's Ambition review.
Wii U eShop Promotion
Art of Balance (Shin'en Multimedia, €6.70 / £5.35) — A lower price if you own Art of Balance TOUCH! on the same Nintendo Network ID on 3DS.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Armillo (Fuzzy Wuzzy Games, €3.69 / £2.99 until 5th October, normally €6.00 / £5.50)
Swords & Soldiers (Two Tribes, €1.99 / £1.77 until 9th October, normally €2.99 / £2.69)
Spin The Bottle: Bumpie's Party (KnapNok Games, €5.99 / £5.60 until 12th October, normally €8.99 / £8.00)
Wii U eShop Demo
Spin The Bottle: Bumpie's Party (KnapNok Games, free)
3DS eShop
Demon King Box (CIRCLE Entertainment, €3.99 / £2.99) — Pitched as an intriguing title, with RPG elements as you gather and level-up demons; the minor twist being that it incorporates real-time strategy in its battles. Despite its efforts at depth and story-driven play, we were left disappointed with this game, describing it as "a mediocre, modified tower defense game dressed up in a gorgeous art style" — check out our full Demon King Box review for the lowdown.
KORG DSN-12 (Detune, €29.99 / £24.99) — A follow-up to its incredibly detailed predecessor, once again this app will recreate the sounds of the iconic source instrument to allow you to create, record and perform tracks. One for music enthusiasts to consider.
3DS Virtual Console
Game & Watch Gallery 3 (Nintendo, €4.99 / £4.49) — Retro fans will no doubt be pleased to see another one of these enhanced collections of the LCD games make it to the Virtual Console; this gallery includes Egg, Turtle Bridge, Greenhouse, Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario Bros., with unlockable surprises also thrown in. We'll jump into a review soon.
3DS Retail Download
Fantasy Life (Nintendo, €39.99 / £34.99) — One of a few key 3DS releases in the next few months, this Level-5 and Brownie Brown collaboration blends an RPG adventure with life-sim elements. Seamless switching between 12 'Lives' and heavy doses of charm do much for this title, which we gave a strong recommendation in our Fantasy Life review. Be sure to also check our working 9 to 5 diary series to learn about some of the available class-types.
Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle (Bandai Namco, €34.99 / £24.99) — This is one to surely tempt devotes fans of the toys and animated show, with a 2D action approach in which you control a customisable robot to fight evil shape-shifting robots. It sounds fun, but it's a licensed game, so we'll see how it shapes up.
FIFA 15 (EA, €34.99 / £24.99) — It's an EA game on Nintendo hardware, which is only slightly rarer than hen's teeth or a total solar eclipse. We're being facetious, as the company often churns out kit updates for FIFA on an annual basis for 3DS and Wii, so we expect this will do much the same thing. Available from 26th September.
Violetta: Rhythm and Music (Little Orbit, €29.99 / £24.99) — Based on a Disney Channel show, this is a mix of mini-games where you show off your rhythm and performing skills.
3DS Retail DLC
Fantasy Life — Origin Island Expansion Pack (Nintendo, €7.99 / £7.19) — An additional island with plenty of resources and challenges to undertake either on your own or with others.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return (Avanquest, £9.99 until 9th October, normally £19.99)
3D MahJongg (Joindots, €3.99 / £3.29 until 16th October, normally €4.99 / £4.49)
Murder on the Titanic (Joindots, €5.99 / £4.99 until 16th October, normally €14.99 / £14.99)
Secret Agent Files: Miami (Joindots, €6.99 / £5.79 until 16th October, normally €7.99 / £6.99)
Atlantic Quest (Joindots, €5.99 / £4.99 until 16th October, normally €6.99 / £5.99)
3DS eShop Permanent Discounts
Ben 10 Omniverse 2 (Bandai Namco, €19.99 / £19.99, was €34.99 / £28.49)
Turbo: Super Stunt Squad (Bandai Namco, €19.99 / £19.99, was €34.99 / £28.49)
Farming Simulator 2014 (Focus Home Interactive, €29.99 / £19.99, was €34.99 / £29.99)
DSiWare
Sokomania 2: Cool Job (Cinemax, 200 Nintendo Points) — This provides plenty of Sokoban-style challenges, which basically involves pushing and moving blocks to solve puzzles. Though this is a competent puzzler it's entirely one-note and underwhelming, as we explained in our Sokomania 2: Cool Job review.

I hope NOBODY buys fifa 15 for 3ds
Tired of their line of they have nothing to gain by developing for nintendo but then still slide piles of underdeveloped rubbish out like this expecting to make a quick buck convinced we will as we're starved of sports games.
Their fulls games such as madden and nhl thisbyear are their worst so far too.
You have to love to loathe EA
Just Demon King Box for me.
Fifa would have been a day one purchase for me had it been coming to Wii U (looks like another year of playing 13) Im quite thankful of a quite week on the eshop my wallet is still recovering from all the discounts lately!!
Definitely Demon King Box for me! Should be a sufficient time killer until something really awesome comes up.
Also, Fantasy Life gets DLC on Day 1... considering the implied amount of content, it seems like stuff they couldn't get done without delaying the game. Still, demanding 8 bucks right away is a bit hefty for starters.
EA can kiss my pack mule
Nothing for me, my wallet will be pleased!
Fantasy Life & its DLC as well as Art of Balance. Maybe 'Ambition' as well.
Armillo looks interesting so I might get that.
Easily DSN-12 for me, loved DS-10 and this literally looks like 12 DS-10's bolted on to each other, amazing stuff for sure and well worth £25.
I'll be getting Fantasy Life (physically), not a great week overall.
Wow was going to groan and say 'nothing for me this week' but then Game & Watch Gallery 3!!! Woohoo!
Armillo sounds like a good one for me this time
KORG DSN-12 for me.
I'm getting Art of Balance and Game & Watch Gallery 3.
@Shiryu <-- knows where its at!
I'm interested in Armillo but I like to get stuff my kids can play too, they love the Wii U, my daughter is six and my son 3, anyone know if they could play it? Thank you
There are 4 download titles I've been waiting for and none of those arrived before the released of Smash Bros 3ds (I'm not buying that one digital). Oh, but there's still next weeks Thursday before that.
Game & Watch Gallery 3 could be good, but I'm saving my money for the other titles that'll get released eventually.
Buy Armillo if you don't already have it. The game is worth retail price.
Also Day 1 DLC. Hooray. Good going, Nintendo and Level 5
Armillo is a must buy. I bought it on day 1 of release myself.
It also just got a new big patch with improvements.
Oooh, Art of Balance, finally!
Nobunaga's Ambition never made it to Wii Virtual Console in Europe. 5 years on and we can play it on Wii U...ah how times have changed. Hopefully Uncharted Waters and other Koei games follow suit.
Wait, a Wii U demo. Like when was the last time one of those was made? I don't care that it is spin the bottle...
I am sure this was discussed elsewhere but the "best" thing about the fantasy life DLC is it may disable you from playing online with non-DLC owners. Excluding the £7 DLC only made the game £5 cheaper so that argument falls flat too. It is all post-game content (and since 3DS DLC must be bought in-game, getting to that shop requires the game beaten)
@C-Olimar Not sure if Fantasy Life had the DLC day one in Japan when it was released a while back. If not then that fact might excuse it a bit (also it sounds like quite a hefty package for what you pay)
Might pick up Armillo this week - I've heard good things about it.
It goes without saying that I can't wait for Smash Bros next week! Definitely going digital for the 3DS version!
Game & Watch Gallery 3.. Want!!
That's an extremely low price for Armillo! With the new update, it's a great game with excellent sound design, worth much more. Make sure to get it, if you haven't already.
@MJKOP: A six-year old should be able to play Armillo, although it's a bit fast-paced at times.
I'll get Art of Balance.
Might check out Armillo.
That KORG DSN-12 was out of the blue.
I was speaking to someone about it earlier this year (a followup to the first KORG app on the 3DS), and the thing that is supposed to set this one apart from the other (or anything else currently available on the eShop) is that it has a full blown synthesiser - not just samples. I might have a look into it.
The only other thing on the download list that catches my eye is Nobunaga's Ambition - but I worry that it would be too complicated to understand. You really need one of KOEI's thick instruction manuals on hand to play one of their games, and the digital ones on offer are just inadequate. Having already bought Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV on the eShop, I can only imagine it's going to be just as welcoming.
I'll also be picking up Fantasy Life, albeit as a physical copy.
I'll probably pick up Demon King Box.
I suppose the FIFA on 3DS will again be that lazy crap "legacy edition" where they just update rosters, but it's otherwise exactly the same game as the past 3-4 games.
Kind of weird to see EA price it at 35€ since the Wii U version of FIFA 13 is still prices at 60€ in the European eShop.
Really a lot of stuff have strangely high prices still in the eShop, too many publishers that just don't care to permanently drop the prices to increase sales.
Just (I say 'just', as if the game is no big deal) Fantasy Life and its DLC for me. It got 94% (gold award) in official Nintendo mag this month.
@MJKOP - My 5 year old plays it and has fun with it. He is probably better at video games then a 5 year old should be though.....it is also a game my 2 year old likes to watch.
For anyone who has an intrest in Armillo pick it up. It is a great game and well worth the full price.
@Thecoolmana777 Fantasy life in Japan had two versions. Fantasy life and then the Link expansion released some months later. Owners of the non-link version could buy an expansion pack upgrade. The Link version added online play as well as all the postgame stuff.
Now when the non-Japan release happened, rather than give us Link and all the content they give us the base game with online play from Link then are forced to pay up for the Link content (if you want to play that).
Maybe including the Link content would have made the game £40 and a lot of players won't get to the content but for those that do spend £7 to save £5? That just seems like a cash cow or some sort of online pass style make money off pre-owned players.
Yes it has generated publicity for the game but at the same time day 1 DLC is something that really puts players off (as this is uaully associated as witholding content). Especially the rumor that buying the DLC means you can't play at all with non-DLC owners.
Another way to look at it is last year Bravely Default came out here. We got the for the sequel version and didn't have to pay £7 for the improvements there (Bravely Defalut in Japan got the for the sequel verison as a boxed release and download upgrade about a year after the original release so similar to fantasy life; its improvements including be able to change encounter rates any time you like, this is useful as parts of the second half of the game drag out). Then again it was £40...
@DESS-M-8 - Thanks for posting that, now I dont have to start off my week so negatively.
Seems like a whole lot going on this week - sales, a demo, DLC, VC, price drops, heck even EA - so I'm impressed w/ Nintendo. May get armillo and S&S if these sales make it stateside. I already bought Spin the Bottle when it had the DLC sale so no need for the demo.
Weird to see Two Tribes name up there after they folded development and its Rominos game but at leadt were getting the sequel.
This is so weird. I woke up at 4am Friday night/Saturday morning with the words Nobunaga's Ambition in my head. I knew I'd heard it at some point in my life but whether it was a film, book, game, or something completely else I had no idea. I ended up Googling it because I couldn't sleep, found out it was a game. Now it's on the download update. I think I'm psychic. lol
I hope that Art of Balance will have some new levels added and not just the same as in the original. But the online play will be awesome!
fantasy life! but a boxed copie
Tenkai Knights 3ds is listed twice in the poll.
Again, I'm left to wonder what NA's VC game might be.
I'm pulling for Gargoyle's Quest 2, Capcom's pretty good on the VC so far.
Or maybe BoF 1..?!
One can hope.
Before anyone accuses Nintendo of Day 1 DLC or whatever, remember this game has been out in Japan for almost two years now, they've already has things up and running by the time we get the game.
@Thecoolmana777 I would have accepted that as a gesture of fairness towards Japanese players, as with the Fire Emblem DLC.
But I've looked into it and the truth is far worse than I imagined. This is DLC Nintendo or Level 5 (either way Nintendo is publishing so they at least supported this) have cut out of the Japanese release.
We are being charged extra for content that has been cut from the game and that Japanese gamers got for free.
Thanks a lot, Nintendo.
Game & Watch Gallery 3?!
@edhe Korg DSN-12 emulates MS10 and 20 analog synths with the added bells and whistles of a sequencer and some effects. The M01 which I think you are referring to is emulation of the M1 which is a digital synth (hence the sample sounds and workstation interface)... I found the M01 to be a little stale but that's the nature of workstations I guess.
DSN-12 is almost like a powered up version of DS-10 which released on the DS back in 2008. I have loved my original DS-10 since it was released and so would highly recommend DSN-12... It appears to be 12x as powerful which boggles the mind.
Check out my channel for some random DS-10 videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/davidevoid/videos
Also worth watching video tutorials for MS20 hardware to give you an idea of how synthesis works before delving in.
I was interested in buying Fantasy Life, but meh, Smash 4 is coming out a week later, so I don't really feel like spending money on another 3DS-game right away. Badly timed release if you ask me, probably would've bought it a month ago. Might get it at some point down the road, if I'm not overwhelmed by the amount of other games I have to play.
Nothing for me this week, i'm not buying much until ssb4 is realised.
@Kolzig Actually FIFA 13 is the most expensive game on Wii U and it is not € 60 , it is still priced € 70 !!!!!!!!!
Does anyone know if there is a Fantasy Life demo due for the e-shop?
I would love to try this before I buy.
@Cosats haha oh wow, I forgot that it was THAT insanely priced.
YES! Game and Watch Gallery 3! Been waiting ages for that, so insta-download
Getting a physical copy of Fantasy Life. I might possibly get Art Of Balance for Wii U as I've got the 3DS version, depends how much it's discounted for though.
I guess now is the time to pick up the farming simulator.
I'm a sucker for the G&W series. Wish Nintendo would release Donkey Kong G&W for 3DS, as it's dual screen setup is the perfect platform. Strange it hasn't yet been done.
I hope GW Gallery 3 makes its way to the U.S. on Thursday. I've been waiting for it to get released for a while now.
...though, admittedly, with SSB4 about to be released, this does seem like the perfect time to put the spotlight on Mr. Game & Watch.
Armillo. By the time I decided to get it, the launch offer was over. Thankfully it is on sale again - now I have another chance!
Ummm Megaman 7/X3 please???? North America has it, why not us?
Man they get FL in just 3 DAYS good to know the DLC is only 8$
Going to get Art of Balance....once it's available in North America... c:
@C-Olimar it was never free they had to pay for both online and the extra content, while we get the online and just pay for the extra content.
Nothing for me this week. Busy with Hyrule Warriors
I'll pick up Art of Balance on Wii U for sure & Fantasy Life when I can.
Seriously, still no Kirby Fighters Deluxe?!
You know what, whatever. Next week is Smash Bros' time to shine. As I said before, the Kirby-only brawler has missed its boat.
@Cosats Then don't buy it digital, in UK is sold (physical) for around £10!
@Tigus Not true. The game being released in the West is Fantasy Life Link, under the title Fantasy Life.
In a Japanese game store you can buy Fantasy Life Link, including all DLC content, at regular retail price. In a western game store you can buy Fantasy Life Link at regular retail price, but it does not come with the DLC.
Nintendo defines bad DLC as content that has been held back from release, cut away from the game in an attempt to mislead the consumer into paying more. I think this falls under that definition.
Would not it be super cool if PES15 came out for WiiU and sell millions of copies? EA face ( -_-)
@C-Olimar Yes, but when the game originally came out, it didn't have any features that it includes now. They released a new edition in Japan to grab more sales, but it wouldn't make sense to do it here since it hasn't even been released yet. It's a sales tactic. Could be viewed as despicable to some people, but I'm happy as long as I get $40 of content. At least it comes with online, where first owners in Japan didn't have that luxury.
Wii u VC is awful! Two years in and no N64.
Nothing for me though I really wonder why Fantasy Life isn't at EGX this year as surely being able to try out the game and if you like it, you can buy it from the GAME or Nintendo UK Online Store stands would be a good way to rack up sales.
Boxmonkey - probably because the button layout on the game pad is inappropriate for the n64 controller.
@brewsky I don't see it as despicable, just a little sly. It may be a grey area but I feel it does violate Nintendo's own guidlines on "good" DLC.
It isn't going to stop me buying the game. It comes at a budget price in Europe, so the DLC isn't horrible, really.
Also Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for 15 euros instead of 25!! At least in Europe
I'm still on the fence with Fantasy Life, may pick that up at some point.
FIFA 15.... Please not again! Why EA? What's the point?
Seriously Farming simulator is a cool game but should be around the 9.99 price range to sell
Yeah...still no Shovel Knight...
Fantasy Life! Let us know how you guys like it.
I am American. But I read this because I am bored. Just thought you might wanna know.
@WinterWarm
Just like I read the weekly downloads for the U.S. when I'm bored
@emeyece
Slowly but surely. My guess is for an October release.
http://yachtclubgames.com/2014/07/shovel-knight-international-status/
Now if Game & Watch Gallery 3 came to NA this week.
Ahhh man, I want to get Fantasy Life so bad! Tell us how the game is when you guys get it =)
Will Fantasy Life release when the actual store updates or on the 27th as is the slated release date?
"We'll try not to fall over as we tackle this for a review" I found this funny
