It's time once again for the Media Create Japanese chart results, and this week tells a tale of modest sales across the board. Though the numbers are low Nintendo still has plenty to cheer.
Pokémon Art Academy makes its début this week and sneaks into top spot, narrowly out-selling more established releases; that does suggest that it won't be a significant seller. Yo-kai Watch maintains its impressive run in second place while Mario Kart 8 secures third place. The results are below, with lifetime sales in brackets.

Moving onto hardware, the 3DS LL (XL) retains top spot and is the only system (aside from Vita TV) with increased sales, with all others dropping away. Despite the fall the Wii U is still in five figures and the top selling home console; the results include last week's sales in brackets.

Not surprising. Wii U's upcoming big games need to come soon but its gonna be a while....
Not as long of a wait for Japan. I think they have an earlier release date for both Bayonetta and Hyrule Warriors
I'm serious man, what's with the 2xx Xbox 360 sales? That is way too consistent.
3DS is the only system in Japan with consistently good hardware and software sales, Mario Kart 8 sales are dropping rapidly and Wii U hardware sales are still quite bad considering it only recently had one of its biggest game releases this year.
@Jazzer94 Yeah Nintendo win this week again but man, this is not good news at all. Look at the current gen sales....they are just abysmal. I really hope this will turn around some how or we will never be getting quality Japanese 8th gen titles.
Lord this year has been awful in Japan. Console sales are still very poor no surprises there. Glad to see the 3DS still on top Vita holding, but pretty bad numbers on its end as it was doing better earlier...something needs to be done in Japan and soon. If we lose the video game industry in Japan then it will be game over!
This probably wouldn't happen if most people in Japan haven't moved to mobile gaming. Alas there's nothing we can do to change their minds as we constantly see poor sales occurring in Japan.

Actually, I think Mario Kart 8 sales have leveled off around 30k per week, for several weeks now (unless I'm remembering wrong). I think that's the long term trend right there. As we can see, MK7 is still the 15th highest selling game, and it's been out for years. So I would suspect MK8 will hold steady.

Sega became the latest to reveal insanely good revenue for mobile today. It's pretty sad, but I think console and even handheld games development is mostly done in Japan. At least the ones that are left are mostly pretty good.

We'll see how it continues to perform. Several other big name evergreen Nintendo titles have hovered around the 30k mark for many weeks, so I'm not expecting to see much of a drop, if any, next week. One would at least hope not anyways...

Wow, Pokemon at 4 million sales in Japan only!! And animal crossing has done better than MH4!! Ah, but Monster Hunter is going to kick butt once Ultimate is released!
Also, if you compare MK8's total sales to the next bestselling console game currently, PES, MK8 is flying high! Especially since NOTHING else for console comes anywhere near MK8 and PES.
You could say that Monster Hunter 4 lifetime sales are...Beastly. YEEEAAAAHH!
I don't remember who said it, but the writing's on the wall. Japan's gaming public was content to ride the 3DS / PS3 train out and now that Sony's pushing the still lacking PS4 (Infamous and Killzone don't seem like games the Japanese would buy en masse).
I'm all for Nintendo picking up another's losses, but I still want to see their market succeed. If Wii U picks up enough, that's great. If it takes both Sony and Nintendo, then there's that option too.
How comes spot 8 and 9 sold exactly the same amount of units this week and for the total units sold!?

I don't understand how the japanese have time for all those 3DS games if they are so busy on phones and tablets. Pokemon, MH, AC:NL. Does everybody in Japan have an hour mass transit commute to school and work or do they just buy those games out of habit and never play them? I know my backlog is about 2 years long.
I don't see anything in the next few months changing home console hardware numbers so I'm just looking towards the holiday period to see how Wii U and PS4 fare. Even f X1 is over there I cant imagine any situation where it' sany more relevant than 360. 3DS could get a bump w/ SSB if all the current 3DS owners spring for an XL bundle. Thats what I would do if I were Nitnedo, don't bundle it w/ the regular. Good to see the japanese still have enough sense not to have the 2DS over there.
Anyone noticed in the total sales of many Nintendo 3ds games are in the millions whereas most of Sony games in all of their platforms are in the thousands? Very impressive, Nintendo!
Would be great if one day we could get numbers for smart device games too. And maybe PC games, dunno if they're included. As well as attach rates and revenue.
Like it or not, but they play a huge part in gaming now. So the picture's not complete as long as these are not included.

Anyway, sad to see such poor sales in Japan all around. I'm wondering if it's even going to be worth Microsoft's dime to launch the XBO there. Nobody in Japan cares about the 20 minute Halo presentation at E3.

I bought 3D colors! on the 3DS because I love drawing (I do it to make a living, you see) and you never know when inspiration comes along. So I suppose I'm, as you said, an idiot.

There are many types of game genres and Nintendo has done well with its Art Academy IP and there are many artists that also play games. One look at miiverse should easily let you know why this game is so popular. People get to combine a game series they love with a hobby or profession they also love. Also, if its like the traditional art academy games you get lessons on drawing these pokemon which is an additional plus.
Just because someone else may not like your genre or may not use a system in the same way that you would doesn't make their choices wrong or bad. The gaming community is way too focused on some artificial definition of what a "gamer" is.

@JaxonH Next week is the clincher if it keeps decreasing the way it has then we only have Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 left to pick up Wii U sales in Japan and both have risks attached to them.

Right. Every Wii U owner should own DKC Tropical Freeze. And Pikmin 3. And Wonderful 101. And Rayman Legends. And Zelda Windwaker. And 3D World. Even Wii Sports Club. And Sonic Racing Transformed. Mario Kart 8 is just the tip of the iceberg.
And I would strongly advise every Wii U owner to own Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and actually play for a while and give it a chance. It's only the best video game I've ever played. No biggie.
Then you get into the AAA ports, and there's a dozen more games all Wii U owners should have in their library. Anyone who hasn't played Darksiders 2, or Batman Arkham City, or Deus EX Human Evolution, or Splinter Cell Blacklist, need to get on it.
Then there's digital games, like Pushmo World (SUCH a great game), Shovel Knight (in less than 24 hours, yeah!), and to many others to list, especially when you get into GBA and SNES VC.
No excuse for skipping these games!
Aside from 3DS... horrible. And if Mario Kart 8 can't get Wii U selling into the 25K-30K range consistently what will? And Sony can forget about it in regards to PS4, it's a Western-focused console with minimal games over the next year, maybe longer for that audience. Sony would be better off, if it has the money, to consider going toe-to-toe with MS in China than focusing on Japan because clearly it isn't going to sell there. And in regards to MS, the Xbox One pre-orders have actually been really good in Japan, and I expect a nice debut, but like PS4, with a Western-heavy lineup what happens after that? I'd like to think things turn around there but man, the console market seems pretty much dead in Japan.

For what it's worth, pre-order numbers for Xbox One have been great in Japan. What that means in the long term, who knows, but all we have to go on right now is pre-orders and the news has been very positive.
