As with the 3DS, Nintendo's keeping busy with system updates for the Wii U, releasing version 4.0.3 for your gaming pleasure. We suspect that, due to the close proximity of the update with the news, that this has little to do with the reported Wii U exploit; either way, it's a minor update.
There aren't any shiny new menus or features, as this is a small download — completed within a couple of minutes on our system — that has the usual goals for stability.
System stability improvements and other adjustments
- Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user's experience.
There may be the odd change in screen, but functionality remains as before — we've been checking out that system stability, though, and it's marvellous. This update is currently available in both North America and Europe.
So get updating and join the 4.0.3 crowd, you know you want to.

Dammit, there was no exploit! How many times do I have to tell you guys that we didn't create anything new, and dumping the bootrom wasn't a big deal. It did absolutely nothing. It was a "just because" sort of thing.
Id like to see some folders added to the wiiu desktop like on 3ds. I'm fast running out of space and can't be the only one...
When is the quick boot update due?
In regards to the update, it's an updated version of IOS59, which is the firmware for Dragon Quest X. I don't know the details yet, but it's probably just fixing a bug they found.
@JoostinOnline I've removed the word 'Homebrew' from my link, but aside from that I don't see anything false in the source article or this. The original headline reflected a group claiming a homebrew exploit, but didn't state that was the factual case in the body of the article, merely making clear that a group is making these statements. If other groups, modders dispute that then fine, we don't say the claims are accurate as it's not clear.
Whether it's "nothing" or not is up to interpretation too, as there are differing opinions on whether closed platforms should be hacked or modded, whether for a purpose or fun.
I'm that group you're talking about, and we didn't claim anything of the sort. One of the authors at WiiUHax.com (which is just a news site, not a team as your article claimed) saw the discussion, and because he didn't understand what was being discussed, he (incorrectly) stated that there was a breakthrough. I've been trying to clean up his mess since then. He's modified his claim as well.
@Buduski
Sometime in early summer, perhaps close to or around Mario Kart 8's release.
I remember when nintendo said there would be two updates for the wii u to increasing loading times. We only ever got one but load times are still quite slow.
@cookiex, yeah probably, thanks.
Will we ever see party chat functionality for the Wii U?
It's hardly high on the list of priorities but how Wii U doesn't have Folder support and a Community Search Bar for Miiverse yet is just beyond me.

When you fill your pages another page keeps getting added everytime... The 3DS folders look poop anyway
I definitely know I'll appreciate that added stability. I've lost count of the number of times my Wii U has fallen over.
@Prof_Clayton I'm pretty sure they mean ... Wait a minute... I see what you did there.
@placidcasual you aren't the only one.
@MAB thanks mate I didnt realise it did that.
@AhabSpampurse ahh mr Spampurse fancy seeing you here
@JoostinOnline Hahahaha, oh boy! It really sucks when a minor misunderstanding leads to such a bloated rumor.
Unfortunately, the best you can probably do for now is to correct these claims on your homepage and ask all sites with the wrong article to include a link to it.
This misunderstanding simply hit a sore spot. The 3DS is in high demand for hacks, and the WiiU suffers from the same region-restriction, so it's news that generates a lot of interest.
I just got my Wii U yesterday and set everything up, included the backwards manual internet setup process and the hour-long update.
So I was a little surprised this morning to see that it could be updated again.
Either way, they still have a LOT of work to do in the "enhancing the user experience" department. On the whole the interface is still a slow, buggy, and confusing mess.
Good thing the games more than make up for it.
@placidcasual You shouldn't be running out of space, because it's supposed to create new pages as you do. Correct me if I am wrong though.
I am on my 5th page, and I still buy almost all physical if that is an option.
Folders would be awesome though! (As long as we can have the name display more than one letter haha)
@Kaze_Memaryu I never made the claim, nor did anyone else who is actually part of the project. Some idiot at Wii U Hax misunderstood what the whole thing was about and said it was a game changer. We don't have any control over what they post on the site.
it be nice if we could have background themes on your wii u menu
It adds pages the more things you add to the home screen, but that isnt intuitive at all. No one wants a bunch of pages (that would have to be sorted one by one, mind you) when there could be three pages with clearly marked folders (VC, Digital, etc.).
They dont have to make the folders look boring either, but apparently wallpapers and themes go against Nintendo's very being....despite their Hanafuda cards and thousands of products doing the exact same thing.
Seriously, they need someone with a pulse updating these things. They work more on the eShop and its songs than they do on any of the home screen UI.
Why isnt there a DKCTF theme that you can drape over the home screen?
Why arent there mascot characters running around on Warawara Plaza? How is it that there are more real humans in Mario suits at the Nintendo Store in NYC than there are fake Miiverse Mario characters parading around your home screen??
Did dentists make the WiiU home screen? Everything is white and sterile, yet the games are friggin' amazing and colorful.
@JoostinOnline There we have it. I misunderstood the situation, too (although in different context).
That makes it all the more annoying, though.
@BertoFlyingFox Agrred across the board! Nintendo really ought to show more passion and identity for their dashboards. A great start would be that a character of a major title shows up among the Mii crowd if the game was played on it. They could even sell wallpapers, or encourage developers to design custom dashboards like with the PSP.
But I don't even know why they never think about customization options for consoles - not only with the Home Menu, but with console cases as well (granted, none of the big three do this, but it would help).
best subtitle ever
Stabil indeed!
its pretty fast now remember how this thig was at launch lol it was atrocious.. but i stuck with it since day one... now just need some games...
@SphericalCrusher yeah I thought I was because I noticed I only had a page and a bit left but another poster let me know. Agreed though - more than one letter would be nice but hey we can't have everything
Cool now just update the system with more software and call it a day.
Nice little Update....
Folders, Nintendo... I have one empty screen left.
I'm going to guess it's a adobe flash upgrade for their browser.
Loving the stability jokes, but seriously now, is there any noticeable difference after this update?
@placidcasual not the only one indeed. I've said this a number of times too.
So I assume this is why I couldn't get onto the eShop last night?
@BertoFlyingFox That's probably the best ideas I've heard on this site since I've been a member. Nintendo definitely needs to think about doing something like that. I hope you sent that in to the Nintendo team.
They always say stability, yet I still get freezing. Nintendo seriously needs to learn how to build a competent OS.
@KingofSaiyans The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (DS)
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U)
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
Three games across three different Nintendo platforms that make use of the microphone. In the case of MH3U, it's voice chat and it's freaking awesomesauce!
@KingofSaiyans and I don't blame them. Unless they make it friend-only, voice chat serves no purpose other than to cause problems.
@Boxmonkey they said that when we were still on version 2. We're on system version 4 now. Do the math. And if you think 2-5 seconds to go from a game to another application is "slow" I suggest you reduce your caffeine intake.
It probably added a dozen other songs to the Wii U's eShop.
Seriously, it seems like, every time I go there, there's a new song!
@BertoFlyingFox My god that last paragraph made me laughed so hard because it is so true!!!
@BertoFlyingFox all your suggestions make sense. I think it is a cultural thing. Some some of ancient Japanese ritual thing that prevents these gimmicks things.
Really can't stand voice chat, maybe I need to try it more. But I think it's a love it or hate it sorta thing. Tried it with AC4, what I heard was a bunch of teenagers making noises and people speaking languages I couldn't comprehend.
Just so people know, somewhere in a recent patch Nintendo added the ability to both start and navigate Miiverse with Wiimote and/or Pro Controller. Before, you had to use the gamepad to start the application. I don't know when they patched in universal controller support, but they did, and you can now launch and post to Miiverse with any controller your heart desires. Just thought it was worth mentioning...
I'll know the Browser will be complete when I can go to the Dragon's Dogma Wiki and it does not freeze. On some other website they said the Browser was cleaned up a little.
I wonder if I can play that web based command and conquer game now, definitely going to try and see.
I was they had an update for a streaming service on Wii U! Even partnering up with someone like Hitbox i wouldn't mind.
