The Nintendo Network and Miiverse have a fairly solid track record in minimising downtime, but some upcoming maintenance will take the service down for a fairly extended period; there's some loose speculation on the web that this could be related to a potential Wii U update, though nothing has been announced by Nintendo.
In terms of the downtime for Nintendo Network and Miiverse services, it's a total of nine hours simultaneously across different regions. Below are the details.
From Monday 30th September 2013 8am Pacific Time / 11:00am Eastern / 4pm UK time to Monday 30th September 5pm Pacific Time / 8pm Eastern / 1am 1st October UK.
Affected Services:
Wii U
- Online Play, Rankings, etc.
Nintendo 3DS
- Online Play, Rankings, etc.
Those details are from Nintendo's official websites, while there's also a Miiverse notification to advise that private messages, friend requests and blocked user lists will be unavailable on the platform in that time.
There is always a standard four hours of downtime on a Monday with Miiverse (it's 8pm to 12am in the UK) on a weekly basis, but this time around the impact is longer and across more services. As mentioned above, there is speculation that this extended maintenance is laying the groundwork for the next Wii U system update, but not 3DS, but those are simply rumours at this point.
With a Wii U system update due at any time after it was pushed from 'Summer 2013', what would you like to see if this maintenance does pave the way for its arrival? Let us know in the comments below.

That would be interesting. I'm curious to know what might be in that update.
A unified account system with the possibility of cross-platform games?
New Virtual Consoles in both eShops?
The ability for both Wii U and 3DS to make your breakfast, fold your laundry, and walk your dog/cat/electric rodent?
Anything is possible!
This is very interesting. I wonder if Nintendo is trying to improve the overall strength and stability of its systems' online. I guess we'll find out soon.
fix you tube would be a start!
Noooo, my rayman challenges!!!
I'm actually really excited to see what they update
I WANT FOLDERS FOR MY WII U DESKTOP!!!!
I don't know what I'd want really, other than folders. I'm pretty happy with the way everything works. I know a lot of people complain about load times, but they haven't really been a big issue for me.
A more streamlined online system. Let me have my account info, friends list, etc. on the gamepad.
^ Yeah
It will unlock the gamepad's hidden cooking plate function and give you cooking mama u for free, and obviously a radar for better communication with the system through walls.
Other minor things could be folders and the fixing of youtube and Blacklist online.
For 3dees it may enable Miiverse on a later day maybe? Or the money printing function available for all ambassadors. The biggest localisation cost ever for software, but it pays off already.
3DS Miiverse prep'?
If anything folders, and the ability to yeah comments on miiverse posts. Also the ability to share virtual console games between 3ds and Wii U.
Also, I'd like to save back up data to the 3DS system.
I want a streamlined way to merge to 3ds sd cards together.
And Miiverse on 3ds, and less Wii U crashes.
I'll be happy with improved speed and better stability but the whole Wii VC, Wiiware on gamepad, GC games, better Miiverse UI and free ice cream would be nice.
Guys, 3DS miiverse must happen. I still think nintendo prefers smartphones made by rivals to the 3DS though.
Account based eShop? Nintendo already has the infrastructure to get the ball rolling...
Why should we expect something special? This kind of maintenance is very common in these kind of services.
However I would like a Wii U system update. The console is still very slow.
Just please fix the online. It's unplayable sometimes. I just want a good stable connection. This is definitely a must come next year. MK8 and Smash Bros will see the most online play in any Nintendo game's history.
You'd think a ND would be set if it was gonna be something epic... I'm looking forward to the major disappointment article with 500 comments after the update
Downtime > Web speculation of update.
You don't say!?
This might as well just be a footnote every time there is some downtime.
Folders, the ability to play a Wii game straight off the Wii U menu, and a shared account is what I want.
Folders are the most likely, the later is the least likely.
Unified id login across multiple wiiu and multiple 3ds is what i want. I love nintendo but their online account system is laughable at best, we are 3 months from 2014 and u still have purchases tied to a single system, we shouldnt have to have different mii characters and streetpass progress if we own more than one 3ds and we shouldnt have to make multiple purchases of the same game.
I'm not going to even bother with speculation, so if it isn't something big, I won't be disappointed.
If nothing else folders would be nice though.
There isn't a 31st of September...
"From Monday 30th September 2013 8am Pacific Time / 11:00am Eastern / 4pm UK time to Monday 30th September 5pm Pacific Time / 8pm Eastern / 1am 31st September UK."
Seems legit.
@SuperSNESLiam
I was just about to post that... damn you beat me!
I've long since given up all hope of an update when there's some downtime. BTW I thought that the Wii U update was scheduled for September or did it become early October? That would be the only reason this speculation has some truth.
Hmm, seems interesting. Either this will make way for the much anticipated update for both systems or will just be there to fix loopholes, possible gaps where hackers could exploit etc. Personally i'd like to see account based and not console locked, along with a miiverse for the 3ds, flipnote 3ds and introduction of gba games, but i'm not expecting too much though. I do think we're due a Nintendo direct though so it may all link in.
I'll take anything :3
Paper Mario strikes again!!
@ThomasBW84 Do you mean 1am 1st of October UK for end of maintenance.
@Rafie I guess that makes me the only one that has no connection problems online (aside from when my internet connection drops at the most convenient times) *heavy sarcasm. There is almost no lag or none at all with the games I play online.
You are probably right though because every time I look at other players connection quality (Injustice for example) compared to mine, I'm the only one with all four bars. Everyone else is at one or zero bars.
But about the down time, I'm sure something good will come out of it. Whether it will be visible to us, the users, or not is a different question...
Wii affect online for 3DS? Miiverse is Comming? ^_^
Unified eShop account, speed update and Miiverse for 3DS and I'll cry happy tears.
I reckon it's n64 vc and maybe GameCube vc. Would be nice if they could extend the distance from the gamepad to the console but can't see it happening. Maybe it's something to do with Panasonic?
I wish they'd fix the Wii-U store. The 3DS store is so much better. It beats the Wii-U's billboard style of limited options. Oh... and add SNES's Zelda - A Link to the Past to Wii-U and/or 3DS.
update to enable the use of 2 or more gamepads. like your gamepad can connect or use in your friends wii u for multi player games. cool!
People I would advise not getting your hopes up.
1: user owned accounts (as opposed to my wii u owning everything) with utility to backup my wii u to an external drive in the event I need to restore rather than re-download.
2: Unified account system across Wii U and 3DS with having access to virtual console titles available on both platforms on one purchase.
3: folder utility to organise and tidy up my cluttered Wii U channel interface.
4: adding N64, GameCube an Wii to the Virtual console. (+ Master System, MegaDrive, MegaCD, 32X, Saturn & Dreamcast hopefully)
@Jazzer94 I did Thanks for the heads up.
@everyone pointing it out with sarcastic comments, leave me alone, I've spent four days running around and working at an expo
Miiverse for 3DS and N64 for Wii U Virtual Console. I want a promotion with Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings at 0,64 € each, like what they did to NES/SNES.
SEGA consoles on VC would be nice too. I couldn't honestly care less about Master System (I have Fantasy Zone on Wii, only to find out later there's a much superior Turbografx-16 version of it; You could say the same about Master System's Sonic games; it was meant to be played on Mega Drive) and 32X really had no good games as far as I'm concerned, but Mega Drive, Saturn and hopefully Dreamcast would win me over.
Guys, this maintenance isn't going to do anything but fix the servers and stuff. If it's related to the upcoming system update then it's only to lay the groundwork.
@ThomasBW84 And you guys did a fantastic job thoroughly enjoyed my time at Eurogamer Expo especially the NintendoLife area.
hopefully it is something good. if not a major update, at least give us folders...... my slots are being eaten up
Chill-out guys... they're just stacking up more servers... because they will release an online-multiplayer demo for Smash 3DS on Tuesday!!!! YESS (lol)
It's probably nothing , maybe it's related to miiverse, if they're trying to make one linked community (WiiU-3DS), as we all hope for.
I hope I don't get an urge to play online exactly during the maintenance this kind of thing happens to me all the time
and I hope they release an update right after it would be cool to see something new(even if just colored folders in the 3DS, I'd like to have green folders instead of blue)
Guess I'll have to survive not playing Sonic Racing Transformed at those times I do have quite the number of other games to play so its all good
I really shouldn't set my expectations too high, but I'm going to anyway. xD
How about fixing the crashing issues? I literally get at LEAST one crash a day. Or the unified accounts? Or the fact that I can't link my account to other consoles? Or fixing the browser so my Wii U doesn't die every timeI attempt to watch a video? Or 3DS Miiverse? None of these things are going to happen, this is probably going to do absolutely nothing, and the next system update will probably just make everything worse. In case you were wondering, YES. I'M VERY IRRITATED.
@cookiex and you know this how? Nintendo said the major update wold be between September and October, and this is literally right when the servers are going down. I may being getting my hopes up, but signs to point towards the major update.
I want the Big update ,a fast OS , achivements like trophy coins, stars flowers, triforce platinum ,gold, silver ,bronce
The complete virtual console encapsulating every non-hand held console game since the NES. Too much?
@SanderEvers
DING! DING! DING!
But I expect all sorts of nice little features to be in a later update.... perhaps not the big one, but another big one....
@DanMan82
Yeah, I wonder why the Internet drops like that....
Glad to know I'm not the only one!
I want(but don't expect nor hope to happen) a feature to change the looks of the 3DS OS. like putting a black background changing folder colors and such things.
Never play online and never use Miiverse, so I won't be affected.
If they do change something, that might affect me, but I agree with @SanderEvers and I will wait until it happens and Nintendo Life reports about it, instead of dreaming and wait for something that won't happen and blaming Nintendo for not doing what I want.
@madness YES. The app is pretty bad and on the web browser it keeps crashing and makes a creepy vuvuzuela noise...
@SanderEvers
I do and so do other probally.
When Nintendo delayed the summer update they did say it would arrive sometime between the end of September and the start of October, so the speculation about the update is justified.
Well yesterday some friends came over and we played on my Wii U. They really loved the Wii U gamepad, they never stopped fighting for it. Therefore, they asked me if there could be 2 gamepads, so I really hope it finally supports 2 gamepads in the update.
The ever-reliable Emily Rogers has suggested on Twitter that a Wii U system update (not sure if it's THE update) is likely coming very soon, so this downtime may well be related.
I'd be happy for a universal account system. And more Virtual Console titles.
Pokemon.
Really wished Nintendo would just tell us when the next big update is happening for the systems already...>_>
Nintendo has stated on the Wii U update section of their website that the Wii U system with new features and improvements is out between the end of September and early October so I do not think there is much speculation on the idea that there will be a Wii U system update this week.
I am hoping that this update brings the following:
1. Folders
2. Account system for eShop (later turned into a universal account system when the 3DS is updated later this year)
3. System wide chatting that can be accessed as a multiprocessed application
4. A video and audio player that plays AAC, MP3, and MP4 (or any file encoded with H.264) off of external HD and/or SD Card. Would be nice if it was multitaskable.
5. A photo viewer that can read photos from an external HD and/or SD. Again it would be nice if it was multitaskable.
6. Improved stability (specifically I hope they fix the problem where viewing videos on Youtube through the browser causes the entire system to freeze).
I'd like to see an achievements/ trophy type system put in place (on Wii U and 3DS, similar to the trophy system between PS3/ Vita), but i seriously doubt that will happen. Realisticly, I hope this is laying the groundwork for Miiverse on 3DS, which we know is coming at some point, and some sort of unified account system, which is probably wishful thinking, but something Nintendo really needs to do.
I wouldn't mind an achievement system... Just sayin'...
@uneek technically it can but it causes huge frame drops. This is why you can't buy a second game pad. I assume we will be able to in time but they will have to develop a special game pad specifically to play alongside the main one.
Well according to that Emily Rogers girl the 3DS update has been delayed but the Wii U update should be coming this week. I wonder what's going to happen with this new update?
@ZesuBen
as long as it is not spam spam spam and not silly achievements that you get on Xbox such as, "You started the game!" or one that made me laugh of FF7 on steam was " Won 1st Battle". Honestly, I hate those types, they are dumb and stupid. If it is really an achievement to do that then this world has really gone to hell.
Please fix my Netflix.
@ikki5
The reason for that is simple. Games need to be accessible these days, which means they need to be easier than they've been in the past, hence tutorials and such. The achievement system is the gaming industry's compromise. The achievements are often where the difficult parts lie.
With that said, adding achievements to older games is difficult because, more often than not, just beating the game is an accomplishment in and of itself. You'll often find older games with added achievements being the reverse of what we're used to. That is to say, hard game, easy achievements.
Why is everyone so against achievements, as if universal achievements lessen the platform or something? No one is saying you HAVE to do them.
Like many here, not expecting anything major as to not get my hopes up.
Folders, Unified account system, and online fixes are the top of my list of wants, though.
@Guitardude7 - because a major system update for Wii U has been announced, and is already late. We know features like Miiverse on 3DS have been announced and are coming, this could be it. fingers crossed
I'm not expecting anything, but I do hope we get the big system updates for Wii U and 3DS that unify everything soon. Nintendo would probably announce what features are added in the updates via Nintendo Direct. We may get one in the next few days. Nintendo does like to do Directs without notifying people in advance.
It's just server maintenance most likely. If there was going to be anything truly amazing, Nintendo would announce some kind of ND. If this maintenance has anything to do with MiiVerse functionality and eShop unity then there could be a possible ND announced tomorrow?
I would like to do a video Conference call to any sip destination
3DS Miiverse!
Say it with me!
3DS Miiverse!
Lets all hope that Nintendo, releases Miiverse for 3DS, because Pokemon X,Y, comes out in a couple of weeks and the game does have alot of online features, and Miiverse will be great for the game. All I hope is that it does come out. Lets all pray
@mamp I wouldnt take the word of emily rogers to be fact. She makes educated guesses/ predictions at best that anyone could pull out of their behind
I predict nothing, because unless there's a Nintendo Direct coming, I will presume that this is maintenance for maintenance's sake.
Better be that speeding update that would make the Wii U faster and ultimately more attractive.
@faint that would be unique. imagine playing multiplayer without the split screen.
I'm 100% certain this is just maintenance. Hopefully my Miiverse profile comment will be viewable once more. It's been hidden since August 16th!
Any updates or special features should be announced in the Direct tomorrow. I don't think we're going to be hearing any kind of news like that, just game news.
@DimetriWarrior - "I predict nothing, because unless there's a Nintendo Direct coming, I will presume that this is maintenance for maintenance's sake."
Guess Nintendo read your post
Well dang! I was going to set my WiiU up this afternoon! Dang!
The only thing that would make things right in my mind for an update would be 3DS menu speed put to the WiiU as it still is a snore going between things.
@Guitardude7 Normally I'd agree, but you have a trifecta going of possibility. known large update is coming, they frag the server today to do mystery work, tomorrow is a big Nintendo Direct for their future of 2013 for WiiU and 3DS. It's a lot of coincidence or a lead up to something.
Whys it not over yet? I cant access the eshop even though its 5:25pm.
Update is live, downloading now!
