Earlier in the summer we told you about a Canadian development studio that was planning to launch a crowdfunding campaign for a licensed sequel to the much loved NES brawler River City Ransom / Street Gangs. Known then as Combit Studios, the rebranded Conatus Creative has now launched its Kickstarter campaign for River City Ransom: Underground.
Described as a "2.5D open world beat'em up with RPG elements, just like the classic game", this once again features Alex and Ryan alongside a new cast of characters; it'll also include four player local and online co-op. So far the only confirmed platform is PC, with the developer yet to set stretch goals, though its stated it wants to try and release on as many platforms as possible. Conatus Creative is primarily concerned with hitting its original target at this stage, with funding on $27,246 Canadian Dollars at the time of writing — the target sits at $180,000 with 28 days to go.
Check out the pitch video below and let us know what you think.

great game, in europe it's called street gangs, I have the cart for nes
Ugh. I've already backed quite a few still in progress. Ach, if I give 'er anymore she'll blow, cap'n! holds the wallet back
Kunio-Kun games hell yes bring this game to me and take my money all of it please thanks.
Always PC
Why make a kickstarter of a console game that would actually be better for any console.
@Undead_terror Well, it IS the easiest and mostly cheapest to develop for PC. No need to buy devkits and all that.
Great game, River City Ransom.
I have a bad feeling they won't make the goal though I'd live to see this game. That video is really awful due to all the attempts at humor. Plus they need to commit to console versions even if it means asking for more money, and not as stretch goals. Plus their timing is not good. Kickstarters for Mighty 9, Shantae and others have made for a really crowded place and time.
@manpretty this.
Well the timing and console part. I haven't seen the video. Though I have been hearing that the video has horrendous humor. That must mean it's good for me!
Is River City Ransom on the eShop?
@Zach777: Only in UK and Japan.
unless fans support this it won't be coming to any Nintendo platform. Nintendo already has a couple of Kunio Kun games on the 3DS but in Japan only.
Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun SP: Rantou Kyousoukyoku for the 3DS is like a River CIty Ransom 2

and they also remade Renegade which is the 1st in the Kunio Kun series for the 3DS

to the best of my knowledge they aren't being localized. i'd buy these two and the RC underground but I won't be getting my hopes up
I am liking what I see.
Lovely pixel art that holds very true to the original game while taking it up to good 16bit level.
Nice.
The Pitch video was horrendous! But the game looks good. Not sure if I'll fund it, but I'll definitely hope for the best and pick it up once it's out.
I loved river city randsom
River City Ransom is one of my favorite games, but this aesthetically doesn't look very pleasing to me at all. Also, the pitch video was horrendous just... Ugh.
I don't think it will make its goal regardless.
Too bad, I still would like a proper sequel someday.
the devs of this one are really cool - talk back and forth w/ them a bit on the indie devs FB group. Good guys, very dedicated to preserving the spirit of the original!
That video is pretty rank though
I'd definitely get this on Wii U. Wii U, people!
Id prefer a sequel made within the limitations of the NES (at least graphically)
This... THIS MUST HAPPEN!
I think they shot themselves in the foot when they decided to make it for the PS4 and Xbox One over the PS3 and Xbox 360. No one even has a PS4 or Xbox One. We have 3 PCs but we don't use them for gaming. Consoles should have been the focus in the begining and expecially Nintendo consoles. I would have loved to have this for the 3DS but again that should have been an original goal not a stretch goal. Look at "Mysterious Cities of Gold" (which I did back). Only for Nintendo systems and they made their mark. I can't see myself funding the project if it will only be on the PC. It is a shame because I really like the art style and I love the orginal
