Speaking in an interview with 1UP at PAX 2012, Deus Ex creator Warren Spector has spoken a little about his love for Disney's DuckTales, and his desire to create a new title in the same universe.
He wouldn't be the first person to attempt such a feat - Capcom released a DuckTales game for the NES many years ago, along with a sequel shortly afterwards.
1UP: I want to know what your ideal DuckTales or Uncle Scrooge game would be; what history would it follow? Would it be the newer Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck? Would it be the older Carl Barks stuff? Would it be the adaptations that were seen in the cartoon? What would your ideal version of that game be?
WS: I don't want to get too specific here because I really do want to do it. But I'm a huge fan of Carl Barks and I particularly like his longer-form adventures. He was a master at one and two-page little vignettes, but he was also pretty masterful at the 24-page — or even longer — epic adventure. And I think that's the quality of Barks that I would want to maintain; that sense of epic adventure, that sense that anything is possible in this world, that magic exists, that dinosaurs still exist somewhere... That a duck can be Indiana Jones, basically. That's what I'd want to keep.
I think the DuckTales TV show did a pretty good job of that; I think they lost some of the adult sensibility — there were things going on in Carl Barks' stories that clearly appeal to kids, but went right over their heads. And that sort of Looney Tunes/Carl Barks — there's stuff for adults and kids — I'd want to go back to that. But a lot of what Barks did I don't think would play with kids today because I think the pacing would be a little too slow. I don't think you need to update the characters; the Disney characters are timeless and classic. I think what you have to do is put them in relevant settings, things that people care about today. And so I would probably be looking for some slightly different contexts, some slightly different types of stories; faster pacing, but still going for that sense of epic adventure.
In terms what kind of game I would make — let's just say it probably wouldn't be Like Disney Epic Mickey. I have other ideas for what you could do in a DuckTales universe. Maybe I'll get to do something.

That's great - but while you're at it how about talking to Nintendo about bringing those old Duck Tales games to the VC, huh? That'd be nice! (C'mon - you know we want you to...i mean you want to. >:3)
@Geonjaha I gave up long ago on any hopes of that... Disney's demands for licensing would likely make it impossible (i.e. they'd want something so outrageous it would make for a $50 Virtual Console game)
Man that sounds awesome, I really hope that he does get to do it, because he really seems to have a passion for these characters! Can't wait for both Mickey games. I also really hope that we get the Ducktales games for the Wii & Gameboy VCs.
Duck Tales on Nes was awesome, but for a game like that to appear on VC wouldn't Capcom and Disney have to reach out on some sort of agreement?
That game was a great little gem of a title on the NES. I remember it wasn't difficult, especially compared to other 80s platform standards, but had great gameplay and graphics for 1989.
Disney must be planning a revival for the series. They don't normally let a 3rd party talk so freely about a property when there isn't something in the works.
Duck Tales 2 was one of my personal favorites on the NES...
A fantastic game! Oh, gosh, I feel nostalgic now. :/
And why not the Starring Mickey Mouse series as Magical Quest or --of Illusion ?
Yeah we need Ducktales, Castle and World of Illusion and Quackshot on the VC. I'm sure Disney can come to some sort of arrangement with Capcom and Sega. They're classic games and I don't even think they've seen a re-release on anything since their original run.
Don't like how it sounds.
But i just find retoric every aspect of his later works.
I'm 24 years old, i don't like remakes, reboots or reimaginations of things that don't need one.
Plus now i like the 30's era of Disney character, certainly not for kids, and he ruined that in Epic Mickey so really i'm not into this.
He should let the team making Epic Mickey for the 3DS make a DuckTales game. They seem to be doing the right thing. Where as Epic Mickey for the Wii was just a mess. And I agree, please Capcom bring the old DuckTales games to VC and while you're at it bring all of your old Disney games to VC.
I'ld settle on the old NES game finally coming to VC If he wants to make a DuckTales, go right ahead, I'ld buy it!
If the VC does come out that is an instant buy for me... Unfortunately,I'm waiting to buy epic mickey.... rather get rayman origins instead and then kirby epic yarn...etc..
I'd buy a new DuckTales game
It all depends on what console it's going to be made for
I want a new Ducktales game, but I'd rather that someone like Renegade Kid made it.
In would also love to see a new Quackshot - which doesn't get nearly enough love!
Honestly, with Capcom and Disney both owning parts of the NES Ducktales games, a remake of both games is far more likely.
I would definitely be interested in what Spector comes up with here
If it has good music like the NES one, I may consider getting a new one.
So... should we petition for it, like we always do?
I just want the original on the VC so I can see what the fuss is about. Come on disney, you can release a stupid fireworks game on DSIware but not your older games?
Capcom were always the best developer when it comes to handling both the Marvel and Disney license at the time. Now that Marvel and Disney are under one roof, it would be exciting if Capcom would get the rights to release some awesome classic Disney and Marvel games like X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, Chip 'N' Dale: Rescue Rangers 1 & 2, Darkwing Duck, Aladdin, Duck Tales 1 & 2, etc.
As one of the lucky old people who grew up playing Duck Tales on NES, I'm worried a young person today (or just someone who hadn't played it before) would fail to see why everyone is so enamored with it... one of those "rose-coloured glasses" scenarios.
OR maybe it's still awesome. Love that music.
So if this is the sequel to Duck Tales 2,how about... Duck Tales 3-D? Yes please.
@Everyone_who_want_this_on_VC: Its not just Disney buy also Capcom who has to give the ok for the Ducktales games to be released on the VC.
Photofool is right. I am far more excited about the upcoming 2D Epic Mickey than Epic Mickey 2, and a 2D ducktales is what I would really want.
It's because of licensing issues that you won't see a lot of classic NES titles based on licensed properties (both NES Ducktales games are great examples.) We were LUCKY to get the first NES TMNT game for the VC but don't hold your breath for parts 2, 3, and 4.
It is great to hear the respect that he has for Carl Barks' stories, which are definitely great in their simplicity and creativity.
And I also played the original NES game. This one, along with Turtles in Time for SNES, are one of those great licensed games whose absence in the VC is really a sore spot.
The fact that Scrooge will appear in the 3DS Epic Mickey is a nice start. I would love to see something new with the richest duck in the world. It could be interesting to see what he comes up with.
@Tasuki
I assume Disney is the problem, since there are many Capcom games on VC already. And tons of good games like Aladdin (any of its two versions), The Lion King, etc. have never seen the light of day on VC.
Yes, yes, yesss. I also want a new Duck Tales. Please bring the retro games to the VC first (nes and gameboy)
It's about time.
This was such an awesome game! I really enjoyed it! I did hear that Disney is looking to revive the Duck Tales franchise. The tv show was excellent! My favorite episode was the Druids episode in Scotland - so cool!! Hopefully Disney will take Duck Tales in the right direction. I still wish Epic Mickey would have followed thru with the steampunk imagery.
Sounds great! You know what would be great too? Duck tales for the NES on the VC! (c'mon Nintendo)
As long as he gets Scrooge McDuck right, he is NOT santa and he is NOT everyones loving gradpa. Read Don Rosa stories for inspitation before making a Ducktales game (Carl Barks can be misleading for people who don't understand Uncle Scrooge personality). The cartoon always makes Uncle Scrooge wrong because they don't understand that he isn't and never will be santa. And by the way, his beard is WHITE not GRAY. As a huge fan of Donald comics (with my favorite character being Scrooge McDuck) I get really annoyed when I see money making cartoons that doesn't make Uncle Scrooge like he is supposed to be. If they want to have a character that resembles everyones loving grandpa and santa, maybe they should go with making a new character only for that purpose. Disney sold their soul to the devil long ago, Walt Disney would have cried if he knew what they have become. Last time they made a masterpiece must have been when they made Fantasia 2000.
@sinalefa Except Capcom solely owns most of those games. This is a matter of how much each company would earn from sales...which may not be enough for either to care tbh
@Mr_LztheBleh: I thought Disney and Capcom shared rights to the Disney games.
Yeah, let's get the NES games on the VC and then we'll talk about a new game.
Awww Yeeeahhh!!!
Yeah, the NES game was amazing. I wished the sequel was on the VC.
A new game that exceptional? Oh yes, please!
Do Rescue Rangers too while at it
