We saw a whole lot of the black Wii U console during yesterday's E3 conference, but according to a Nintendo representative the dark shade might not be available at launch.
Destructoid reports a booth representative as saying the system will launch in white, with the black option available "someday".
It took years for the black Wii to follow its white counterpart, but hopefully we won't be waiting quite so long for a dark Wii U. Let us know which colour console you prefer in our Facebook poll.

White. It will match my Wii.
Seeing as they were heavily showing the Black console this seems a bit silly.
I know it bothers some people, but so long as I don't get stuck with the option of a Hot Pink system, I don't care what color I get. As with my 3DS, they ran out of Black when I went to buy mine, but they said they were going to order some in and I could wait. Instead, I got Aqua Blue.
Black please. White is so boring and my Wii is already white so I want a change.....white also shows dirt more.
Another reason to wait. Yep, Nintendo really did learn from the problems with the 3DS' launch.
Dafuq Nintendo? I hope this isn't true. Way to screw over the early adopters >.<
Looks like another reason for me not to pick up a Wii U at launch.
Black matches my TV.
The white one for me. The glossy black gets dirty and greasy just by me looking at it.
If these devices had a matte finish, I would have gone with black.
Wow Nintendo, first deliver a bad launch lineup, then tell me the color Wii I want won't be available at launch. Sure, I'll keep my money for now.
what!!!!!!! im buying it day one no matter what and i want the black one.Why is it so hard to launch with two colors?
If the black one isn't going to be available at launch, why is it being pictured on their website more than the white one?
Seriously, SERIOUSLY??? this is actually impacting my buying decision, it's not hard to slap a black casing onto a console instead of white, ESPECIALLY after getting me all excited for a black one yesterday at the press conference, I have a white Wii because at the time I had no other choice, but would much prefer a black one.
Oh how this harkens back to E3 2006 when they showed off almost a dozen Wii colours, and they're released all of what, four???
Seems strange that they're not going to launch it with both colours.
Oh well, I was leaning towards white anyway considering it'll match my current Wii accessories.
While i don't mind going for the white one, i can see this excluding a lot of early adopters of the console. Bad move Nintendo...
But I want black, it looks nice.
I guess I'll have to get a white one because I am not waiting, can't be bothered.
Looks like I'll be buying a WiiU "later".
Darn it. It's gonna be just like the Wii. I bought it day 1, but there was only white available. I want to buy Wii U day 1 too, so I'm stuck with white again. I find that dust and dirt tend to stand out on white consoles and accessories.
Even if black is available by the time I decide to get a Wii U, I'd still rather get white so that it matches the Wii accessories that I'll be using on it.
I would prefer the black console but it isn't going to prevent me from getting a Wii U day 1! However why even show the black console and gamepad so extensively if it won't be around at launch?
Not a problem for the casuals. Imo they prefer white anyway.
Well I thought all the bad news from yesterdays press conference were behind us, guess Nintendo can't help but shoot themselves in the foot. Well I was planning on waiting anyway but this does give me an extra excuse.
@XCWarrior Ya, after that abysmal launch line-up I doubt I'll be buying it at launch... well then again it could end up like the 3DS ambassador program... or like the virtual boy...
White will get dirty.
Black will get Dusty.
Decisions decisions.
Really Nintendo?! Hoped to buy the black one on release..
Better buying it later..
I'd rather have the black model. Why does Nintendo always have to tease us with colour options like this. I feel it really punishes you for being an early adopter.
And that's not to mention their practice of updating their hardware - the WiiU Controller's batterylife for example is fairly short, but will they end up improving on the technology?
On the other hand, I wouldn't mind a deep blue or purple console - I may have to mod it when I get it.
I wish they could just release a bunch of colours at launch instead of them trickling out over the years. There's no way I can stop myself from getting one at launch so whatever colour is available is always what I get stuck with. And white is like my least favourite colour they've used for the Wii. At least I've got my awesome set of gold and red Wii accessories which I can continue to use.
It doesn't make sense. First of all they were showing the black Wii U GamePad constantly and the first time they revealed the pro controller, it was black. The last few days of Wii U coverage that I've seen, I've seen more black than white. Can it really be that hard to launch a system in two colors?
Damn you Nintendo. This is a day one purchase for me and I'd much rather have black. Gah!
This is indeed a disappointmen. White reeks of casual, but Black screams hardcore...
My favorite launch color consoles were the Purple Game Cube. and translucent purple Game Boy Color.
black is a lame color they should have a red color at launch. because red is superior to black.
Why would you advertise the black model if you refuse to launch with it.... If they hadn't shown the black model so much, I really wouldn't have expected much. Guess I'll have to wait....
I'd go for White. It's my favorite color.
I WANT BLACK!!!!!!
This sucks... I think I'll wait for the black. -_- Although I want it at launch! Ugh!!
oh my god everyone should calm down......wait for an official word from nintendo, not some second hand rumor.
Black. Seriously, I hope this isn't official news, because I do NOT want to get stuck with a white WiiU like I did with the Wii.
We just want black because we're so used to Nintendo and white consoles. Just look at Sony. The Vita has only been available in black, and now that it's in white, everyone wants that one instead. But with that being said, I still want the black version =P
Ah man I was hoping for the black one at launch. Oh well looks like I will have to pick up a can of black spray paint as well on launch day.
give me midnight purple
if not black
if not white
im buying opening day. i have been saving up since last e3
Looks like I will not be buying a Wii U at launch then.
Sorry Nintendo, it's your own doing.
Don't advertise things people can't have.
ugh i had my mind set on black even though i didnt want a white and wanted a red instead but i had to have it but then they go and do this to me sigh............. its going to be hard to hold out till i get the colour i want
why nintendo WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY cue the rain and thunderstorms
WHITE- Dirty
BLACK- Dusty.
It's harder to get off dirt than dust. Plus, I'm not getting it on launch.
Black one it is.
Sigh
I really think both should be available at launch. I have a black Wii so I was thinking of getting Wii U in black, but I'm not going to sit around forever to get the black one. I think both look good, but most people like the option to choose the color when they buy something that will be visible in their living room.
But the Black one looks cooler!!!!
Neither. Dark Forest Green FTW.
Hmm, I have too many black consoles in my collection. Its only my Wii that is white. I don't care that much about the colour but I think I'd go for black given the choice. Very strange decision if not available at launch. Other rumours had only one Gamepad supported so I wouldn't belive the gaming sites/mags 100 percent yet.
I really hope this is wrong, as it sucks to stiff early adopters with the same colour yet again. The whole reason I wanted black is because my Wii is white. Ugh, maybe they should just go back to NES grey if they're only going to have one colour.
White. I have a black wii and I don't like the look of it compared to my old, dead white wii. It still plays the games though, but I want white Looks friendlier, cleaner.
Great, first the conference, then this. I would still probably get it in white though.
@LEGEND_MARIOID
whew you kind of restored hope in me a little bit
sigh.... I NEED black, and NOT at the end of the Wii U's life. Bad Nintendo, BAD!! >
I'd like a traditionally coloured "NES dual grey' WiiU and gamepad.
I want a Wii-U styled in the same color scheme as the original Purple Game Cube.
I want the white one. I have a red Wii and a Pink DS, Pink DSi , and Pink 3DS.
Red + White = Pink ! XD
I DO hope black is available and I find it really odd that they would place it so conspicuously in all their promotional materials. The video showing the features of the Wii U GamePad is on a BLACK controller. The crazy non-specific action figure video had a black Wii U, a black GamePad and a black Wii Remote next to the TV (making me wonder if my hope for a Wii Motion Plus Remote in the box might not be in vain... but still probably is).
On the other hand, launching with more than one color is a bit of a logistical nightmare. Especially if it's not selling out instantly like the Wii did. And I don't think it will this time. Stuff sitting on the shelves because it's the "wrong" color is VERY bad for business.
Weird double post. Never happened on this site before.
I wish I had a choice but am pretty sure I was gonna get white anyways. I don't know I may actually want a black one this time around.
I don't know I may actually want a black one this time around.
U gotta be kidding me, why are they doing this, they should release both the colors at the same fricking time not one after another, this is exactly what happened to the 3DS... Nintendo WHY!
I wanted to get a Wii U at launch...but no black? I want a black Wii U! It's supposed to match my black 3DS! Of course I want a white Vita, which would not match my black PS3...except I care for my Nintendo stuff more than my Sony stuff anyway.
I'll buy the console on day one even if it's only available in the colour of faeces with a pink swastika on the top, but yes, ideally I would like a black one >:[ especially after they got my hopes up by showcasing it at E3. The source here doesn't seem too solid so hopefully this is a rumour that will soon be quashed.
Sigh, in the, maybe I'll just get a white one and paint something on it.
FALSE INFORMATION??????????????????
Why does Nintendo usa website give you very specific details on choosing white or black????? It says HARDWARE COLORS... AND BLACK IS OVER WHITE!!! Black is the home page WiiU color. Nintendolife I beg you. If you have any connections to nintendo of america please suggest that black be available even if limited quantities. PLEASE, i'm begging. I really want black. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.
White is nice, but i'd prefer black like my 3DS.
When will they release a real color instead of this boring neutral stuff?
Black,of course.Now how about some real colors(Not to say that black and white aren't real colors).Emerald Green,Hot Rod Red,Ocean Blue,Sun Orange,Misty Pink,Royal Purple,Sunset Yellow,Thunderstorm Grey,and many more.

Look at my profile to see how my username is pronounced.
By...........Joshu-Oh wait,I already said that.
"white reeks casual" "black is hardcore" .... seriously? They are colors (shades? lol) , and they shouldn't label what level of gamer someone is. Anyway - I was hoping for black... so hopefully this turns out to be false and they launch with black - if not - I might consider just getting a white console... Don't even know if I want WiiU on launch day yet.
That's a shame. I wanted the black but I don't want t wait for it... Darn.
Black would go much better with everything else I have thats black.
Black. Damnit. Nintendo you are actually giving people reasons not to buy your console, this is crazy, wtf.
Please understand this comment means no disrespect to anyone. But if you really think about it, the color of your console does not matter. For once its literally whats on the inside that counts. What the Wii U can do, is why you should want it. Not because of what colour it is. If you care so much about colour, go buy a cute pillowcase. They come in any color you want. Blue, green, barbie, anything. Like really. Its a game system. Try to make the best of it. And another note. I have had many booth representatives at such events claim that the system has certain features, or does not have certain ones, or release date estimates, and more. And they have been wrong at least 7 out of 10 times for me. I wouldn't say that their words are fact. They are guessing, the same way me and you are as well. Really looking forward to this system. Black looks a bit classier, but if i have to get white first, ill buy black later. No biggie. Or get mine redone.
@Lyssified Everyone has good reason to wonder if they should buy it on launch. But the way I see it. Even if it doesnt end up being a hugely popular system, like xbox or ps3. It will still be great. I for one think it will change gaming forever. In my opinion, xbox and ps3 will soon follow the dual screen path, and enable touch features. Guarenteed. I recommend buying one, but in the end it is your choice, Afterall it is probably around $300 CAD. Thats quite a bit for a system. But keep in mind the touch screen controller. That would explain a hefty price.
@super-nintendo I was just pondering on your comment. And you amde me realize something. I'm starting to think Nintendo took a different stand with the Wii U. And if you think about it, that is their goal, to be entirely different than ever before. Now by how many Black units they have showcased recently, and the mass advertising of black and white equally. Maybe both will be available on launch. I guarantee Nintendo knows that what they did with the Wii Black failed. It made way less money than they hoped. Apparently they lost money on the black unit because of its late, outdated release. Don't be surprised if when you pre-order your wii u (if you do) they say "What color?". I think nintendo has been hinting at that for awhile now by showing both.
