Metroid has aged horribly, IMO. Better off watching a Let's Play or reading the plot synopsis on Wikipedia. Or play Zero Mission, the GBA remake, if you can. Much better game.
It's not essential though, no. Super Metroid briefly recaps the first two games in the opening scene to bring you up to speed on the story.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
If you absolutely have to play the series chronologically and have access to a device that plays the GBA game Metroid: Zero Mission (which is a much enhanced remake of Metroid on the NES) i'd recommend doing that.
I hope it will be released on the Western Wii U VC's soon since it's already available in Japan.
But you really won't miss out on anything if Super Metroid is the first Metroid game you play.
I say go for it. Zero mission is the best one story-wise because it also added to the original with a story on how she got her fully upgraded suit. Plus it also has some sweet cut-scenes(for a gba game)

I started with Super Metroid and so glad I did. The game is obviously more polished, more beautiful and has aged better. And I cannot even fathom how to play a Metroid game without a map, as the first game does.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.
There's no need. It was innovative at its time, but it's hard to still say Metroid is a great game. And it has virtually no story. In fact, the story it has was mostly given to it later through the Super Metroid intro and Zero Mission.
Just start with Super Metroid. I think it's by far the best series entry point.

I for one think you should start with Zero Mission if you can. Other than being an infinitely superior remake to the original, it's easy enough and concise to make a great entry point.
Of course, Fusion isn't bad either because that one is incredibly linear so it's good for starters.
This is a signature.
Link goes here now.
Screw you.
I agree. Zero mission is vastly superior and as a bonus uses the same engine as Metroid Fusion. All the benefits on the last GBA game put into the firsts' remake.

And as far as i remember it doesn't really depend, build upon or spoil the "story" of the previous games either. Except for Fusion i don't really see any focus on story in the 2D games. It's a lot more about the glorious atmosphere and the occasional cinematic sequence to me.
As for Gameplay wise, Super Metroid had a lot more buttons at the time when GBA's ZeroM only had limited button control. Super Metroid is pretty good graphic wise and has most of the mechanics you'd have is in most of the other newer 2-D Metroid games like Fusion and ZeroM. So the gameplay experience is similar.

I agree. I tried to play it on 3DS (Ambassador release) and I gave up almost immediately. Besides, my first Metroid was Metroid Prime and I loved it. Now I have Super Metroid and Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii U, all for €10.19.
If Zero Mission was released on Wii U, how much would you recommend it, guys? Is it easy enough?
ZeroM actually put me in a spot where I thought I had to start again because I felt stuck but I actually had to go there. It's like any other Metroidwhere it can feel hard but right down to it, it's not. I would recommend it since the very first Metroid just doesn't do it like how this game does.

You should play Super Metroid and not bother with Metroid - it has aged terribly and simply isn't worth playing today unless you have a nostalgic connection to it. If you're worried about the plot, look it up somewhere for a quick rundown - it's an extremely simplistic story.
As others have pointed out you could also play the remake 'Zero Mission' on the GBA, as that one is actually worth playing.

I know people drew a map for the first Zelda game, so I think they did the same for Metroid. But of course if someone's schedule is busy, you don't have time to do that stuff.
You should play Metroid and stick with it because then you can say that you are one of the few people who actually beat it unlike the kid's these days. Use a save state here and there to avoid the restart at the beginning of a world with only "99" and the game is pretty easy.
To blessed to be stressed.
