Topic: Motion Plus use?

Nintendo has already said that the Wii U will be compatible with all Wii accessories, but do you think that includes the original Wii remote? It would make sense to cut it out and exclusively use the Wii Remote Plus and the new Wii U remote. Personally, I think they should do just that. After all, how many games have used the Wii Remote Plus on the Wii? If they allow both to work on the Wii U that same thing could happen again, and probably would. What do you think?

They already said the U will use ALL Wii accessories...Wiimotes/M+, Balance Board, Classic Controller/Pro, Nunchuck, yadda yadda.

aww, I thought this topic would be on ideas for using the gyro in the Wii U controller. Yeah, all this stuff has been confirmed as Eureka said..... BORING

I already knew it had been confirmed that the Wii U would be compatible with Wii accessories, as stated in my first post. The topic had two questions, however.
1. Will they continue to use the Wii remote original with the Wii U? (different than compatibility; will games use motion plus exclusively, use both the original and motion plus, or use only the original?)
and
2. Should they continue to support the original remote?

Personally, I'd like to see it dropped so all games would use the motion plus. Any thoughts?

Sorry if my topic was unclear.

Off topic (and I kinda have an exam on this today) but the fact that the Wii U controller has a camera and gyro/accelerometers/compass means it's a GPS short of creating a fairly accurate photo map. If you then put a few connected Wii Remotes around the room, guessed their co-ordinates using the sensor bar and then used the Wii Remotes to guess the location of the Wii U sensor bar...... you'd have somewhat of a Room Positioning System.

Then use points of interest across multiple images to create a fairly decent, low cost "photo map" of your room. Pretty awesome ey? The Kinect does it better.... it's effectively a static lazer scanner thing.... but still, there IS some cool tech here.

It's entirely up to the developers...some games may use just the Wiimote, while other games may have the MotionPlus as a requirement such as Skyward Sword.

The Wii remote is obviously compatible with the Wii, but not with all games on the Wii. Some games require it to use the motion plus attachment. Just because they say it will work with the Wii U doesn't mean it will work with all or even many games.

As for why not use the original remote, the Wii remote plus is better. It offers far superior accuracy and the real question would be why not use it? Especially if it came bundled with the Wii U, which it probably will since some games require the Wii remote and the Wii U remote.

If you're asking whether more games will use it then sure, yes, more games will probably use it. It's there and they can assume that people who own a Wii U have Motion Plus. But that's not what you asked, you asked whether the Wii U would support the original Wii controller.

Silly question, we know it will and there is no reason for it not to. Some games might not support it but MOST games should and probably still will because they simply don't need motion plus. There is no reason for Smash Bros to have motion plus support, the same is true of 2D performers and there is not much need for it in Virtual Console games either. It's like the 3DS, it has a gyro and because it has it a lot of games use it.... but not all games need it and not all games use it.

The current Wii console bundles already come with a Wii Remote Plus controller since the Motion Plus enabled controllers
are still compatible with the older games that only take advantage of original Wii controller capabilities.
Nintendo may end up just phasing out the original Wii controllers for the new system. At this point the Wii Plus controllers
are at the same price point as the original Wii controllers used to be.

...If the U supports the Wiimote Plus, then why would they phase them out? :/
They can continue making games for the WiiU that would use the Wiimote Plus.

EDIT: Never mind, thought you meant for the motion plus, lol

I restated my question asking whether the original remote WILL be used or not and whether or not it SHOULD be used. (not a silly question if you ask me) That's what I meant to begin with. As I said, it's already guaranteed to be compatible with the system, just not all or many games. I was hoping people would actually discuss the merit, or lack there of, of making developers all use Motion Plus rather than giving them the option to use the relatively outdated original remote. Though it's true many games wouldn't need it, especially side-scrollers, many games would benefit from the better accuracy. For example, any sports game using motion control, and most shooters could be improved with 1:1.

And yes, there is a reason to abandon the original remote. Several actually.
1. The Wii remote plus is absolutely, without question better. It has better accuracy but can still be used as a regular Wii remote.
2. The original remote isn't even in production anymore (as far as I know they don't stock it anywhere anymore because there's no reason to).
3. When available side by side, both are the same price.
4. For whatever reason most developers skipped over the remote plus in the Wii's life, and allowing them that option again could mean more games with broken controls.

What reasons are there not to abandon it?

Also, at the moment there is no guarantee that there will be more games on the Wii U that use Motion Plus than on the Wii. One might've thought there would be more titles for it on the Wii after it came out, but there were very few. Who's to say that, given the option, the same couldn't happen on the Wii U?

1. The millions of units floating around
2. It would involve extra effort to demand that everyone only supports the new controller
3. For many games there is NO reason to use the gyro which is the ONLY advantage of motion plus

You wanted a discussion on the merits of Nintendo dropping support for or forcing developers to not use the old Wii Remote. I think that's a bad idea and I've said repeatedly why I think it's a bad idea. Me disagreeing with you doesn't mean that I don't understand your question. I just don't think that restricting developers and saying "you HAVE to support motion plus" is a good idea. If you want to get more motion plus games all you need to do is bundle it with the system. Banning legacy hardware is not good for games, it's not helping developers and it's not something I'd be ecstatic about as an end user. It's good for nobody....

......... except maybe Nintendo who would probably end up selling more remotes

Actually, all you really said before that post is that most games don't need motion plus...

1. The Wii remote plus will almost definitely be bundled with the Wii U because they already showed a Wii remote being a requirement for many games, and they will not bundle the old remote. Everyone who buys a Wii U will have access to a Wii remote plus. I assume you're referring to people who have multiple original remotes and would have to re-buy them for multiplayer. Such a requirement is very common in the video game industry; the Wii and 360 both required new controllers, and the PS3 requires at least an adapter for PS2 controllers. It may not be nice to have to buy more controllers, but it's nothing new.
2. What effort? The extra sentence that says games must use Wii remote plus? Or the already finished software for using it?
3. Like I said, I agree that many, though I wouldn't say most, games would gain little to nothing from motion plus. However, there are many games that would benefit but might never see use if the developers have to choose between supporting the Wii Remote Plus and the original remote. As you said, there are plenty of people who have multiple Wii remotes. When it comes to putting out a multiplayer game they might support these people rather than improve the game with motion plus. As for those games that gain nothing from the stronger remote, they also lose nothing. Requiring the Wii remote plus would improve many games and have no effect on others, but keeping the original remote could hurt many games and have no effect on others.

Besides that, many people already have at least 1 or 2 motion plus attachments and/or Wii Remote Plus units, and that number will only increase with Skyward Sword's release. These people would start out with 2 or 3 usable remotes (including the pack-in) plus the Wii U remote. From day one they would be ready for 3-4 person local multiplayer.

I also said that we will probably see more games supporting motion plus purely because it's bundled. What you're saying is that it should be a requirement that no games should use the regular controller.

I agree that most people already have motion plus and more will after Skyward Sword. This doesn't give much weight to your argument however. My point is that most games probably won't have a use for Motion Plus and there's no gain from demanding that those games don't let you use older hardware. Also that developers won't be worried about abandoning people by making Motion Plus games for the Wii U because it's bundled with the consoles.

Imagine for a second that New SMB Mii is a launch title and you want to get 4 player multiplayer. The console is just out and you have it's bundled Motion Plus, a shiny Motion Plus from Skyward Sword, the Wii U controller and an old Wii Remote with Motion Plus attachment. Most likely such a game would be just D-Pad and two buttons with at most some shake and tilt so there is no need for Motion Plus BUT say that Nintendo demanded the use of Motion Plus. Would that make the game better? No, not really, it'd use the same controller features. Infact it would make the game fairly annoying for P4 who now has to reach over the Motion Plus to get to the buttons.

So really, your argument, silly. Because we don't get better games or more Motion Plus games and nobody wins.

Actually, my argument isn't silly. As I've said several times now, not all games would gain something from motion plus, though no game would lose anything, but the ones that did gain would gain a LOT. By making it necessary developers would have no choice but to use it and hopefully make games with better controls. If it wasn't mandatory it is almost guaranteed some lazy developers would put out games using the original Wii remote despite the upgrade being better suited. They would probably slap a sticker on the front that said you could use your old remotes, and fail to mention the broken controls. Even so, some people would buy that game rather than buy any new controllers, and to compete other developers might do the same thing. This is all conjecture, but definitely possible nonetheless; I could think of a few lazy, money-hungry companies who would stoop so low.

Anyway, making motion plus the standard would absolutely bring better games by putting all developers at the same level control-wise. No cheapskates there at least.

As far as people without 4 motion plus units having to buy new controllers being a negative, I'll say again, it's normal. This would be the first Nintendo console with which all previous gen. controllers carried over completely. Sure, the Gamecube controllers work on the Wii, but not on most games. The 360 cannot use Xbox remotes, and the PS3 can't use PS2 remotes without an adapter. In fact, the only case I can think of in which you could use the previous gen's controllers without significant limits is the PS1's remotes on the PS2. It's nothing new to have to buy new remotes. It's called progress.

PS- Sorry it took so long to respond. I didn't have access to a computer for a while.

No. Developers will just make the game for the PS3 and Xbox 360 instead, because those consoles don't have silly rules forcing developers to do stuff.

Also, developers don't tend to like to be told that that lovely install base they had been counting on dosen't actually exist. Why do you think Nintendo isn't making that ugly second control slider 3DS accessory mandatory? Because if they did, even if it did make the game experience 10000000000 times better for the end user, every developer would just do make their games for the Vita, where they can count on the install base. Why? Because developers and publishers need to make money.

Please, Nintendo is struggling enough right now. If you're going to make suggestions about what it should do, make suggestions that don't amount to digging its grave a bit deeper, all because you personally would benefit.

Now if you want to go and make games that require the use of MotionPlus, I'm sure Nintendo will let you (once you've set up a business legally, got staff and all that fun stuff).

You'll go out of business after one or two games, but hey, at least you'll have made good games, right?

Motion Plus is a gimmick, like YellowChocobo points out and Nintendo's failure to make it standard from day one has confirmed it to obscurity. I have the attachable dongles that I got with Wii Sports Resort, but they stay off in a corner forgotten. Admittedly Skyward Sword will bring the technology back to the forefront, but I believe the revival will be limited to that title alone.
You must understand that seeing the existing Wii Remotes abandoned is an inflammatory proposition to loyal customers, such as myself, that have and use the original Remotes. As the Gamecube controllers expanded gameplay options for the Wii, I believe original Wii Remotes will help the Wii U obtain legitimacy as a multiplayer console.

You don't think PS3/360 developers have similar restrictions?

From what I've read, it's a bad time to be a 360 developer due to their various restrictions.
