Why? So you can collect points and brag about how many points you have? No thanks. I've seen too many Xbox fanboys go crazy over this stuff

Oh, and this article reeks of Xbox fanboyism, as does the rest of IGN

i like them beacuse they do add to the game and i like a challange. i wouldn't call if being a fanbot but it should be a norm as the sony, and microsoft does it and thier are lots of wii game with tier own achieveable stytem that it should be there. Also as Jay staed if the wii was the only system that had it then you'd be singing it's praises kinda like the Mii's were praised until microsoft and sony showed thier Avatars.

I recently got rid of my 360 in favor of the WIi and not having achievments was a big plus for me.
I always found they took away from the enjoyment in a lot of games and made you play in a way that just wasn't fun.
There are ways of doing it right but I can't imagine most developers for the Wii doing it right. Getting the full 1000 in all the Wii party games would be too tempting.

I've very glad they're not there!

Most achievements are optional like the mutiplayer ones or collect this so you don't have to do them.

Yep, absolutely agree. Achievements/trophies/whatever are possibly my most hated "feature" in gaming in recent years. It nearly ruined Batman: Arkham Asylum for me, because they were so pointless, yet so intrusive.

Posts like this confuse me. How is it possible the achievments almost ruined a game for you? And how were they intrusive? You more or less got them for progressing through the story and completing the Riddler challenges, which were not needed to beat the game.

They are intrusive because the Riddler, with his weirdly omniscient voice, always has to comment on how you're doing on his little collectathon/achievement-whoring quest, not to mention that several parts of the levels are designed around this, i.e. small concealed areas that contain nothing but a question mark. Achievement-whoring should always be an afterthought to developers, but here it just seemed like parts of the levels were designed around the collectibles themselves when it really should be the other way around. It distracted me to the point of ruining the flow of the game somewhat, but still, I enjoyed it apart from this. I just feel it would've been a better game had the whole thing been less intrusive (i.e. no constant reminders, level design more focused on your objectives).

There are much worse examples, however. Team Fortress 2 did the horrible thing of making you hunt for achievements for each class whose alternative weapons you wanted. Valve eventually did the sensible thing and just went with letting players find weapons randomly, but it was bad enough to put me off playing some classes while it lasted.

The main beef I had with acheivments back when I still had a 360 (now red ringed to DEATH)was that they tended to ruin the immersion for me. If they could have had an on and off feature for popping up I would have been fine, but when I'm getting into a good horror survival game like Dead Space and I've got the lights down and the situation is tense as hell and suddenly this stupid little green pop up comes up that sticks out like a glowing green sore thumb, I get pissed. Maybe if they took more time to make their system reliable and less time making popups I would still support their system.

Collecting trinkets in video games have been around forever. Sounds like you have a problem with that. I mean, I doubt they devised them for the sole purpose of achievement hunting (and if they never existed the Riddler challenges would likely remain).

No Wii don't. Achievements are fine and dandy, but not really necessary in games.

The only achievement system I like is in Smash Bros Melee/Brawl trophies, mainly because you get cool/obscure Nintendo info with them, and some are quite challenging, like the Diskun trophy.

Bullcrap. The reason I even have a Wii in the first place is because it's NOT the PS360. I like that it's different. I LOVE that it is nothing like the other two systems. If the Wii had achievements and the others did not, it just wouldn't be the Wii anymore. What dangermouse said is absolutely right; achievements, far too often, are just a cop-out for lazy developers who don't put enough actual content into a game.

you can turn off notifications which also turns off the achievement sound. Also with the batman thing its the Riddler thing that was the point it was made to be apart of the game as to have him as a main villain but since he was physical abilities thats why the quest was there.

also achievement whoring doesn't mean putting achievements in the game to make it seem longer (what game has done that?) but when someone takes a game with easy achievements to boost gamerscore like the avatar 1000 gamerscore in 1 minute.

nope

The only reason I have a Wii (or DS for that matter) was because, excluding the very occasional PC game, I had been a non-gamer since I had the SNES before I was compelled to get these consoles. In my opinion games had become too expensive and too fancy without anywhere near as much emphasis on gameplay. The Wii has delivered that and so has the DS.

IMO achievements are a distraction from what I like about gaming. I probably wouldn't complain if the Wii got it but I am not annoyed at its omission. Its like the hordes of people complaining about the two toads or the lack of an online mode in New SMB Wii. Would these things have been nice? maybe. Was the game less without it? maybe. Does it matter at all when I have four friends and the disk is spinning? hell no!

Let's get one thing straight, achievements are optional. You don't have to finish them all, you can just ignore them.

Take Wario Land: Shake It! for example. It's a great game all by itself. But to finish the game at 100%, there are a lot of missions to complete which are very challenging. Or Wii Sports Resort. Great fun to play alone and with friends, but some stamps are very challenging. It took me a long time to get the 200 points at Skydiving and find all the white balloons, but I got a very rewarding feeling out of it after I finished it. The feeling that I achieved something.

I want more Wii Games with some sort of achievements system. If you don't like achievements, you can just ignore them, but it doesn't make a game less Wii.
