This is without a doubt the best game on the WII. Game of the year already.
The graphics are above the level of Shenmue and everything is at a constant 60 frames per second. Wouldnt look out of place on the 360 or PS3. Great atmosphere and a vast world to explore. Who needs fatal frame when youve got this. I cant believe this level of graphics is running on the WII. Voice acting is very professional too.
I can only imagine its delayed so long in europe because there is a lot of speech in it that needs to be translated for other european territories.
Cant wait to hear other peoples feedback about it on here.
I agree I picked it up this week and I'm about 2 hours in so far. The first thing I noticed was how detailed the graphics were and how amazing the soundtrack, audio, voiceacting and use of the phone were. I was a bit skeptical when I saw that Climax traded the foggy rust colored Silent Hill for a Snowy Silent Hill, but like past Silent Hill games this one sets an eiree atmosphere that is unsettling at times. Most people know by now you won't be hacking monsters in this game its moves at a slower pace with the focus on exploration unitl the Nightmare world sets in. The its time to run! Overall I agree with the review score this is a terrific and scary game.
I can't express enough how much i enjoyed this game. Waiting a bit and playing some other games before going back for another playthrough. I'm a big horror fan in general, but i always prefer the more "real", psychological horror stuff. And this game was very much like playing a David Lynch film. I went into it expecting to enjoy the game and nothing more, but i ended up really loving it. I may have actually enjoyed this game more than Silent Hill 2, which is saying A LOT (played that one 3 times in a row, back-to-back-to-back, and probably played through it a couple more times since).
And agreed, anyone who doesn't think the Wii can do beautiful rich graphics needs to watch this game in motion (yes, there are some graphical problems like rigid shadow-edges, but not such that they negatively impact the graphics overall IMO). The sound is also excellent, and just helps to immerse you even more. There were so many times where i'd get a call, lift the Wiimote to my ear, then as the call ended hold the phone in front of me, looking at it with that "WTF?" expression, only to look back to the TV screen and see Harry doing the exact same thing. Immersion, baby!
Excellent game, HIGHLY reccomended for fans of true horror games.
(BTW, i think there was an earlier Shattered Memories thread, so don't be surprised if this gets locked and we get redirected there)
The fact that you can call any phone number in the game is awesome, but also adds to creepiness factor. I don't why but when I called the National weather service and listened to the forecast it just heightened the suspense for me. The level of detail that Climax Studios included in this game is amazing. I heard people say you can breeze though this game in about 5-6 hours, but I am taking my time and trying to explore every area of the town I can. The phone call in pump station really freaked me out too.
I think you can blaze through the game pretty quickly if you wanted. And that actually affects the gameplay -- some of the things the game "pays attention to" is the amount of time you spend exploring, looking at signs, calling phone numbers vs. just rushing through to find/save your daughter, and will affect the ending you get.
Hmm... that's interesting. Still I feel I want to explore every nook and cranny. The Psychologist asked me about my experience in High School and had me rank my favorite classes. I wonder what this game is up too. I noticed the monsters are changing shapes as well. One looked like it was made of rings.
About 5 or 6 hours in and the game gets creepier the more I play. It was cool to see a Contra arcade machine in the movie theatre. Unfortunately you can't play it because the screen is smashed.
Is it faithful to the PSX classic? I need to buy this game too.

It’s much different. The characters names are the same and the overall plot of Harry searching for his daughter is the same, but not much else from what I understand. In fact the game's story will unfold differently for players depending how they answer the psychological evaluation. And of course the biggest change is no weapons! You can only run from monsters.
This one left me with a resounding "Meh." The graphics are good (for the Wii), and it has its moments but I just couldn't get into it. Those chase sequences were annoying as hell, and the lack of any combat felt odd.

I love the way you say the graphics are better than Shenmue - a game from 11 years ago! I'm not pointing that out because I want to say Silent Hill actually has poor graphics, but that Shenmue's were so great that, all these years later, it's still used as a reference for an amazing looking game.
Also, I'm getting really sick of the phrase "the graphics are/were good (for the Wii)"...
"Don't make enemies, they'll stab your heart; don't make friends, they'll stab your back. Including me, including you, all men are trash. Don't love; don't be loved. Have nothing to do with other; live in isolation."
I am very near the end of it (stuck in what I'm assuming is one of, or perhaps THE final nightmare section) and I've loved everything so far and I'm stoked to go back through it and try the things I missed before, since it seems when you open one door, the other option is locked. I have to say, it's like walking through a David Lynch movie. I've been really affected by the over all story of this game, but i think thats probably due to the fact that I'm weeks away from being a first time Daddy.
This game did for snow and ice what earlier titles did for rust and fog. If possible try to play this during a real snowstorm. I bought a copy and oddly enough got to play it while going through a real snowstorm.

Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
@Tony: Yeah, when i was playing through it was during the snowstorm we had in NY in December. So totally enhanced the game experience, playing while the snow and wind were whipping around outside.
@edofthe209: Congrats on the soon-to-be-here baby!
