And so today sees the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive turn twenty years young. Well may I say a very Happy Birthday to you.
It’s hard to believe that not so many moons ago, the Genesis was cutting edge technology. Maybe it’s just scary as to how far the home consoles have moved on in this time. Still to this day though my Mega Drive(being from the UK I’ll call it by this from here on) still maintains a front seat in front of my television, and may I add, still work perfectly unlike some systems I’ve owned.
The console has been the birth of many great gaming characters. Obviously I’m looking at Sonic the Hedgehog here. If none of you have ever played one of the four original Sonic games, you owe it to yourself to get at least one of them now! If I could recommend just one of his titles though it would be Sonic 3 & Knuckles (OK that’s two but when combined thanks to the lock on technology, make the longest, most enjoyable and memorable Sonic game)
If I were to look at one genre that has taken the console forward it would have to be the platformer. Before the likes of Sonic came along this genre was on the rise thanks to such releases as Disney’s Castle of Illusion and Sega’s own Alex Kidd. Looking back on those two specific games now though and you can see just how far things advanced in terms of graphics and sound, and I mean just on the Mega Drive. Some later platform games really pushed limits on the system.
The console had a very interesting range of adverts over it’s lifetime. Sega Pirate TV was controversial yet compelling and one to look forward to back in the early 1990’s. Marketing came up with the original ‘to be this good takes ages’ slogan. A nice play on words. In the US, advertising slogans took a swipe at the competition by claiming ‘Genesis does what Nintendon’t’ Quite controversial in this day and age.
The Mega Drive was home though to some absolute classic games that will never be forgotten and over the course of the next few weeks, will personally try to contribute to a somewhat ‘reader special’ In terms of looking at a range of games on the system, it’s add-ons and what is in store for the future of the console.
Please let me know if you would be interested in reading more on this subject as I would like to fit as much in as I can time permitting. Also if you have any requests for reviews or anything Mega Drive related, shout out and I shall listen!

Happy Birthday

Nice tribute slatters. Hard to believe it's a 20 years old now. It's definitely made classic status.

Keep it coming. I'd like to read more.

Actually, the Sega Mega Drive was released in 1988 in Japan & so only the Genesis name is 20 years old.

Cool, now it's time to port It's My Birthday to the Genesis as a tribute.

Yes you make a good point, it is only the name and US release thats 20 years old. And the Uk had to wait till 1990!
