Topic: Instead of DLC how about free content when you download certain VC games?

This works for retail games too.

Instead of paying 200 points to download Bass in Mega Man 10, how about being able to play as him for free as long as you've downloaded one of the other Mega Man games on the NES (whichever has the least downloads). That way, Capcom gets another download and the player gets free DLC or a discount on the VC game (depending on how you want to look at it).

Or if Donkey Kong 64 comes to the Virtual Console, you could only play the original arcade Donkey Kong if you've already downloaded the NES version.

Maybe if they end up releasing a new proper Donkey Kong Country game on the Wii, one of the characters is unlocked once you download... Donkey Kong Jr. Maths!

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

But then those greedy publishers won't get more money out of its gamers

thats a good idea or if you Beat donkey king 64 there should be unlockbles if you beat it once unlock donkey kong country 1 then beat that unlock the 2nd DK, then beat that unlock the 3rd DK.

This so gets my vote.

It depends on how important number of downloads are compared to sales of DLC to a company. I mentioned DK Jr. Maths because nobody in their right mind would download it. But if there was an incentive to downloading it such as a free character in a retail game then it would get downloaded.

That depends on if they want to give away free VC games. It could raise awareness of the Virtual Console though.

Finally signed up for the forums because this made me LOL. DK64 contains the original arcade Donkey Kong inside it already, you play it on an arcade machine in the factory level.

I know I was only saying,, the developers would probably loose money for free content but adding characters for free of charge would be nice. or bonus content if someone beats a game once, more unlockables for twice and so on. but it will never happen. Again I was only saying.

Yes. But in my example, it would be removed for the VC release until you download the original NES game. You would be prevented from playing it until you also own the NES game. That way its not like you're getting the NES game for free.

Oh, I see what you mean. I don't like that idea a bit, I would prefer them to leave the full games the way they are! DLC is an annoying enough concept to me already. I want to have the whole game when I buy a game. This will leave me feeling older and older as time goes on.

... and it bodes badly for the used market of current games. When kids of today go to retro game shops in 2025, they are going to have a lot of trouble knowing that they can get those games to work and have all the content. If retro game shops even exist by then... I suppose the online shops are the new version of them.

Well one of the reasons people are stating that its not yet arrived is because of the retro games. Jetpac because it belongs to Rare. That would have to be removed and giving the Donkey Kong arcade game away for free (even if it is a part of the Donkey Kong 64 game) would infringe upon the downloads of another game already on the VC (same as how people are saying Super Mario All Stars isn't on the VC because of the four NES games already on the VC).

Why would anyone download NES Donkey Kong (or even VCA Donkey Kong if it ever gets released) if Donkey Kong 64 is available for only 500 points more? DK64 came out at a time when retro games weren't readily available but now they are.

I'm not sure that I like this idea.

To unlock stuff in Mega Man 10 I'd need to download the older games? What about people who already own them all on a Mega Man Anniversary Collection disc -- why would they want to re-purchase games that they can already play, paying extra for small DLC items?

I'm also worried that we'll see publishers gimping their games by removing interesting features unless you own entire series of games in digital format... and that's not something I'm keen on supporting. If I'm only interested in "game X" then I don't want to be coerced into buying "game Y" just to unlock additional content.

I'm not so good with these business decisions, I just want my games! You make a lot of good points.

DK64 + DK NES = DK Arcade

I'd definitely sell my cartridge to get that!

How about:

S&K + Sonic 3 = Sonic 3 & K

Also, if you buy SMB, SMB LL, SMB2, and SMB3, you get SMAS!

But if you were prevented from playing it, you wouldn't be able to beat DK64. The arcade Donkey Kong is not an optional bonus level, it's a required portion of the game.

So you get the coins for free without having to do anything. You check the arcade machine, and you get the coin. At least until you can access the arcade game. Anyway, it was just an example of what they could do.

They already did that. That's a special case, as the same thing was required with the original releases.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.

That would be quite annoying, but other than that quoted idea it could be a profitable idea.
