....so usually i just unplug the main power strip to get it to go completely off. so should i worry as i have own'd a wii prior to this one i have and this never was an issue? any help/comments would be greatly appreciated as i am concern'd that my wii is already head'd to its grave. should i return it, do something different when shutting down that i am not versed in, etc. ?

you can turn off WiiConnect24 in the Wii settings and that wont happen, or you can just hold in the power button until the light turns red, but the Wii is designed to be able to stay on 24/7.

You need to hold the power button on the Wii until the light turns red

Yeah and I don't like letting it run all the time as I've heard any disc in there will just keep spinning.

THERE... ARE... 4 LIGHTS!

But the WiiConnect24 is able to run on what lights up a lightbulb.

I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

If you disable WiiConnect24 standby mode then you don't need to hold the button, you can just press it once. Downside is that the Weather and News Channels won't launch (pretty lame if you ask me, I don't see what one thing has to do with another).

I remember reading at launch that in standby mode the Wii uses 11 watts of electricity. That means if you turn off a standard 60 watt bulb you could have five Wiis running in standby and still have some energy left over.

But as for your Wii heading to its grave, I would personally be afraid to power it all the way down as it may never power back up. So I'd leave the standby settings alone.

Sounds like people above have answered the question.

One additional comment though: If your system is in standby mode (yellow light), don't just unplug the Wii. Always press the power button until the console shuts down completely (red light) before unplugging, or you could cause memory issues if the Wii was in the middle of updating some information.
