That's the problem with console online play. With PC's you can host, with consoles you cannot. I still play the original Unreal Tournament now and again and host fights using my computer as the server.

You can't? I think the PS3 can be run as a server. I seem to remember Team Fortress 2 having the option, too, but I didn't have that game long as my online was not working well at the time, which made owning it pointless. I could be misunderstanding something though, as network play is still an alien concept for me.

Adam, I think it's the exception rather than the rule. Perhaps it's just that EA has a racket going with the yearly releases and this is how they force people to buy the newest installations. It's part of the reason I don't buy EA sports titles. I'm not sure if the CoD series, The Conduit, even Tatsunoko vs. Capcom can have games hosted by people with consoles ... which means sooner or later, those games will see the loss of online play. Granted it will take a few years (hopefully) but eventually those games won't be playable online any longer. I used to love playing Tribes for the PS2, but the servers got shut down and the game is boring to play as a single player. Maybe I'm unduly worrying and that five years from now I won't even care to play The Conduit any longer ... but it's still the principle of the thing if you ask me.
Most of these are annual-updated sports games with minimal changes beyond new base rosters, so EA wanting to make more people feel like they have to buy the next installment shouldn't come as a surprise. People who updated won't have the problem anyway, and people who didn't are now essentially complaining that EA should continue to support their decision to not give them more money, which doesn't make much sense. Nothing surprising about this - save your complaints for games where there's actually a reason to keep playing them beyond "I don't want to spend more money on the next.".
