I recently downloaded the Nes original and it's okay. Kinda unfair with the limited continues and no way to earn more. The rest of the game is pretty good though. Anyone download the Wiiware remake yet? Is it any more forgiving than the original? What is your opinion of it?

I'd give you impressions if I weren't at work right now.
I've read that it's more forgiving, since there's now a map, a save system, and reworked mechanics (losing your gun power from getting hit once, for example, has been changed)
Very anxious to hear from anyone who has played the remake.
First off, there are save points! Woohoo! Also the music is faithful to the original, just a remix of sorts. The story is a bit different not that this game is story driven. Your tank can shoot at an angle this time (when you are on a ramp).... at least I didn't think you could do that in the old one. Also there is a map. These are my very early impressions, back to the game
I've been a Blaster master fan all my life. When I think of the NES I think of Blaster Master and later this week, when I get the points, I'm definitely downloading this! I can't wait to see the reviews!

I've had some time to play the game today and I have to say that I am very impressed. If you played the original game then you will feel right at home here. The story centers around Alex as an adult venturing out in his tank SOPHIA to save his family and the human race from a virus that has turned all the animal on Earth into mutated creatures. This game is not a remake. The stages are all new but the gameplay is very familiar. You play with the Wiimote held like the NES controller. It works pretty well but I wish that there was some classic controller support. The map feature is a blessing because this game is pretty huge. There is lots to explore and just like in the original game you can only go so far until you reach an obstacle that can only be overcome once you obtain a new upgrade for your tank. The save feature is also a really helpful addition to this game. You can save at certain points in the game which are conveniently displayed on your map. The tank controls pretty well but seem a little stiff. You do get used to it though. The graphics are nice and the characters and monsters are well animated. The music seems to be made up of remixed tracks from the original game. Not nearly as good as the original soundtrack but still nice nonetheless. So far I have beaten the first boss which was a giant crab and upgraded my tank with a grappling hook. I am now in the second area. You can upgrade your gun in the overhead dungeons but you now have three different weapons to choose from. Your standard straight shooting blaster, a homing laser and a rocket launcher. You can cycle through these by pressing A and you can level them up to 5 times(this being the max power). Unfortunately, your weapon does get downgraded when you get hit just like in the first game. There are no more grenades but instead you get a screen clearing bomb. The game is difficult but not as much as the original thanks to the save system and the map. I still prefer the original game to this one but this is still an excellent game. It took them over twenty years but Sunsoft finally made a proper sequel. Highly recommended.
Ah what the heck. I'll go ahead and get it. Sounds like most people are enjoying it. I still need to improve my skills on the original too while I'm at it. The added map and save feature definitely sounds like an improvement over the Nes game. This should make overdrive more tolerable. Well I'm off to download. Thanks for convincing me.

Also there are grenades, you just have to hit A to switch between your choice of weapons in overhead mode.
Anyway if you are a fan of the original I don't think you will be disappointed. I actually think this one is better so far, but I have only beat one boss.
2 bosses down. doing the back and forth metroid shuffle now. So far its been a very pleasant experience, way better than that infernal PSone sequel what ever its called. I highly suggest this for anyone with an old school itch!
Only put in a half hour so far (beat the first boss), but very nice. Plays almost exactly like the original with some mild tweaks (SOPHIA feels just a tiny bit less "floaty", which is good). I love that they kept/remixed the original music (though of course now it's stuck in my head). Looking forward to playing some more after work (but before LOST, of course!).
Oh, and check out the Operations Guide, especially the "Story" section. Little funnies throughout. My favorite is the section on Saving that says something like "Special players like you get to save the game, but don't tell anyone else about it or they may get jealous!"
Game says 1:44, I'd say I've played 2:15. The game is definitely a throwback to the series, but it improves just about every gameplay grievance the original had. It has save points, it has an overworld map, it has more Metroid-y exploration, it has upgrades (purposes for going into the caves besides bosses, yay!).
But the game has a couple issues, as is the norm. 4 Areas in, and I see that the backgrounds are fairly similar. Colors are different, and some little details change, but not at the level I would hope between areas. Already got a boss that was a recolored version of another (albeit had a lot more firepower). The overhead sections don't change enough background-wise for my taste, but there is still the fun gameplay there.
Oh, and in Area 3, you'll see there is a save cave underwater. I highly advise that you do not save down there. There is nothing in the cave to help you much, and getting back to SOPHIA will more than likely be impossible. Almost was, for me.
The Original Blaster Master had 2 recolored Bosses. The giant Lobster, and Fred the Frog. Their 2nd forms were some of the more frusturating and hardest bosses i've ever went up against in a videogame. those were the only 2 bosses in BM that i had to use that bomb glitch cheat, because for me they were next to impossible to beat. people say the crab is hard, pfff...that Blue Lobster that shoots Ice at you will make you rip your hair out....there's zero pattern to learn either.
Anyways, that's one of the things i hated about the original, the background always kept repeating itself....Or sometimes there would be nothing to repeat, it would be one giant colorscheme, like level 2 ect. I wasn't huge on the Bland indoor overhead areas either...they were ugly for the most part, and became boring after a while. OD seems to improve on everything compared to the original....Sooooo, did Fred the Frog make an apperance? it just isn't BM withought fred!
@Donatello I've not seen Fred yet, but there is certainly time. I must warn you, though, the backgrounds do somewhat repeat. There is some differences, but they are not as much as they should be.
I have really been enjoying this game. I just defeated the giant bat, which is the boss of the fourth area. I now have the dive kit which allows my tank to maneuver underwater. I made it to the fifth area which is the lava stage. The difficulty is also starting to ramp up but not too bad. I've been collecting all the upgrades and covering all areas of the map. I've put in almost five hours into the game and there is now a little less than half of the map to complete. I believe my tank still needs three more upgrade kits which means that there should be at least three more bosses to go. I guess I'll give it a try again tomorrow and see how far I get.

May I ask where because I can't find the 4th (skytower) boss anywhere?
@Tony: The best advice is to take a look at the top left area of your map. If you zoom in on your map you should see an area that you have not accessed yet. It is in the fourth area(skytower). There is a room that has three enemies hanging from platforms shooting at you. You need to get to the upper left part of this room. In order to do that you must make your way onto those platforms by exiting the room on your right and re-entering the room through the upper entrance. Go left until you are on the third platform and when you jump off shoot your grappling hook at a diagonal angle to grab onto the ceiling so you can get some lift. Then hover your way left until you reach the platform that was previously unreachable. From there you should be able to find the way to the boss. Oh, and make sure to save before you go there because there is no save point in the dungeon with the boss. I hope this helps.
@WolframHeart Thanks I was trying to hook the platform in front of me. Its kinda of a hard jump to make but I did and cleared area 4. Thanks for your help.
Just beat area 2 boss this morning and I'm loving it. It's great just like the original back on the NES! I especially like having different types of weapons instead of just one, and all 3 can be upgraded.
