Topic: Would Animal Crossing be a system seller?

I just posted this topic because animal crossing has such a huge following... I honestly don't play the series... not my cup of tea.. but my wife is really into it.. she still plays city folk amazingly enough... she just prefers the console experience(TV) vs the 3ds/ds... tried to get her into wild world but no go... trying to get her into new leaf but no go ....

With all the possibilities with the wii u and its mii verse SOCIAL community wouldn't an animal crossing game motivate the casual market into buying a Wii U?

Thoughts?

Well....I don't know.

Animal Crossing, especially the New Leaf iteration, just fits on a handheld. I just leave it running on my 3DS throughout the day and when I have a spare moment , I open up my 3DS and play. On a console, I have to dedicate time to sit down and play the game. Most likely, I would buy Animal Crossing U, if the features warrant it, but I just don't know if it'll be a system seller.

EDIT: An extension of my thoughts....

To be honest, I wasn't expecting Animal Crossing: New Leaf as much of a success as it was. If, perhaps, the same or even a greater investment was made into Animal Crossing U, then we may all be surprised again.

Don't you dedicate time to handheld games by sitting down as well? Or do you stand/walk/run when you're playing your 3DS?

You should clear that up for me.

I'm not sure, TC. There are a lot of Animal Crossing fans out there and I'm one of many who bought the 3DS solely to play New Leaf on it.

I see... makes sense...... the age demographic of the city folk series really impress me... there were kids all the way to grand parents playing.. of course the Wii was able to grab that market of course...

Yeah that's the reason I feel certain people might just buy a Wii U just to play that game especially since it's so engaging to those that love it...

Well, of course, I dedicate time to play New Leaf. But I can play New Leaf in 5, 10, 20 minute sessions as I go about my day. On a console, first, I have to be home, and then I have to sit down and play it for about an hour. And I can't leave my console running while I'm at home, it just isn't practical.

I drive and play... is that bad?

On a more serious note, I think Animal Crossing works best on a handheld environment. Sure there have been Animal Crossing games on console but I didn't enjoy them as much as the portable ones

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

That makes sense. Though, from my perspective, I like to play Animal Crossing for at least an hour at a time.

So a Wii U release is ideal.

Yeah that's pretty bad. haha

Still, it would boost sales a lot. Having it on WiiU would definitely help push many consumers in the right direction.

I think Animal Crossing would be excellent candidate for an open world sandbox style MMORPG that utilizes both home console and handheld devices for interacting within the virtual world either at home or on the go, and I believe such a game if done right and properly marketed could most definitely be a system seller.

I think the fact that the GamePad exists makes this much, much more appealing. The console versions have always been more of a "community" animal crossing experience. Multiple people generally play the one game and work together (mostly) to build the town. The portable versions are more of a solo experience where most of the interaction is done by visiting other people's towns and getting streetpass stuffs.

I think it'd work pretty damn well. Would it sell systems? Probably. Not as much as the portable versions do though.

Are you talking about Two Player on 1system AT THE SAME TIME!!! Ok, I could get behind that. My Wife loves Animal Crossing and if we could live in the same town and play at the same time, it could be lots of fun

I think they'd be able to make a good Animal Crossing for Wii U, but it'd have to be alot different than the 3DS version. City Folk was basically just a rehash of Wild World. I don't think they should do that.

I'm not sure. It's pretty evident now that Animal Crossing sells a hell of a lot more on handhelds than it does on home consoles. While City Folk's sales were OK, Nintendo must've been disappointed given the Wii's install base and the push they gave it. To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see an AC on Wii U and it becomes a handheld-centric franchise, but who knows.

Animal Crossing works best on Handhelds. Unless they want to make a HUGE leap forward with the series in terms of multiplayer, then I think it should just stay away from home consoles. I loved wild world much more than city folk.

Check out my YouTube channel if you love gaming, and Nintendo (especially Metroid) I think you'll enjoy my videos. :)

Umm, I don't think we're talking about the same thing. I was talking about having multiple people share a town which you can do on the portable versions but is more natural on the home console versions. Because New Leaf, particularly if you've downloaded it, is very much a personal town. That said multiplayer could work I suppose.

Also I should have put a pause between the GamePad comment and the rest of my post. I was trying to say that the GamePad lends itself Animal Crossing more than playing on the TV itself does. A Wii U version of Animal Crossing could be a nice balance between the convenience of the portable versions and the community of the console versions.

As a semi-MMO where you had constant interaction with others, such as trading items, playing tournaments (fishing, bug catching) and posting all kinds of stuff (taking pictures, writing messages on notice boards etc.), it could be a real hit. The game would have to be a lot bigger in terms of content, but it shouldn't be a real problem. If marketed properly, it could really move consoles. Pair it up with some toys and exclusive miniature sets that give you in-game stuff via NFC and kids will go crazy (along with their parents).
