Guys, 7 and 8 are pretty much the defacto numbers for games that are really good, but have some things a good number of people would find hard to get into. They can be flaws, or just game mechanics that take some patience to get used to that not everybody has. Meanwhile, 5 and 6 are the numbers specificially for a "good game that does very little if anything new". Just because a game isn't rated a 9 or 10 doesn't mean you won't enjoy it, it just means that you need to read the review and decide for yourself if it's worth the plunge (heck, even if it is a 9 or 10, you should still do that, since you may not enjoy it as much as the reviewer did). It's only 4 and below where things get really serious.
I understand there are people who don't want to read every review and just look at the score (like Metalk9 over here...), but you shouldn't get yourself flustered over the fact that the games you like aren't being super successful. Just do your part and give your impressions, calmly and thoughtfully. Who knows, maybe you'll convince people to give them a try, and they'll tell others? Better than complaining about the review scores on a review site...
I view the numbers in critic reviews and put them in my own grading system. Reminds me of my school grading system.
1-5 Garbage = F
6=Meh = D
7=Good = C
8=great = B
9=Amazing = A
10= flawless = S

The site has its own grading system, I'd recommend to check it out to better understand the reviews.
Your very own system makes half of the scale useless, so it is not very useful itself.
I was joking, for one. But yeah, no, you can't just say "these numbers mean what I want them to mean" when you aren't the one setting the numbers...it's one thing if you read the review and decide your own score. I do that all the time. But just changing the meaning of the end score the reviewers themselves gave? That's not gonna work out...
@munchakoopas If you apply your own values to someone else's scoring system, then you are going to miss out on the intended message. It's silly to redefine numbers how YOU want when they are already clearly defined by this site.

I suppose so. Sometimes we disagree with that person's scoring system and feel the number should be higher/lower. I don't arbitrarily impose my system nor do I feel I need to. I was just stating how I feel the scoring system would be for me. That's if I was a game critic.

What I don't understand is why do people treat 7 or 8 out of 10 like a 1 or a 2? I mean its very rare that a game will get ten but so often not just on this site but other sites as well if a game gets a 7 or 8 people bash the reviewer like it got a 1 or a 2.

But in your book 1-5 is basically the same score. You're rendering half of the numbers useless. May as well go on a 1-5 scale in that case. If we're going to use 10 numbers, it's nice to have all of them mean something.
I like Nintendolife's scoring scale quite a bit. It's not arbitrary. It helps explain the difference between a 1 and a 5, which in your book would just be called "failed games".

That makes sense. It sounded like you're just...looking at the numbers and applying your own score based on those. But if you're just saying "this is how I would score the game", that's perfectly fine.
